Onimusha Way of the Sword – How to Rescue Townspeople (Citizen Savior & Selfish Selflessness Trophy Guide)

Onimusha Way of the Sword How to Rescue Townspeople

Onimusha Way of the Sword rescue townspeople events are random encounters that happen as you explore Kyoto. They are separate from both Chance Encounters and Mysteries of Kyoto – they pop up spontaneously while you are just wandering around the map. Two trophies are tied to them: Citizen Savior (rescue 30 townspeople) and Selfish Selflessness (rescue a merchant being attacked). Neither is complicated, but both are easy to miss if you do not know what to look for. This guide covers exactly how the system works, both trophies, what rewards you get, and the fastest way to reach 30 rescues. For all other side content, check our complete Chance Encounters guide covering all 18 side missions.

    TL;DR – Quick Summary

    • Citizen rescues are random events – they are not on the map until they trigger live.
    • When a rescue event starts, an exclamation mark (!) icon appears on your map.
    • Run to the icon, kill the attacking Genma, then talk to the survivor to confirm the rescue.
    • Talking to them after killing the enemies is required – skipping the conversation means it does not count.
    • You need 30 total rescues for the Citizen Savior Bronze trophy.
    • Selfish Selflessness is a separate Bronze trophy for saving a merchant specifically being attacked.
    • These events can fail if you do not reach the citizen in time – the Genma will kill them.
    • Rescues carry over into New Game+ – your first playthrough count adds to your NG+ total.
    • Rewards include consumables, items, and occasionally useful materials.
    • The best way to rack up rescues fast is to explore Kyoto thoroughly and stay alert for the ! icon.

    What Are Townspeople Rescues?

As you explore the open-town area of Kyoto, Genma enemies will sometimes spawn near civilians and begin attacking them. When this happens, an exclamation mark icon appears on your minimap and main map to show you where the attack is taking place. This is the game’s signal that a citizen is in danger and needs help right now.

These are not pre-placed side quests. They are dynamic, live events that trigger while you are out exploring. You could be heading toward a Spirit Mirror or a Chance Encounter and suddenly see the ! pop up nearby. The Genma will not wait – if you do not get there fast enough, the citizen dies and the rescue fails.

Once you arrive and kill all the attacking Genma, you need to walk up to the surviving citizen and press the interact button to speak with them. This final step is critical. The rescue does not count toward your trophy progress until you have the brief conversation with the person. Just killing the enemies and walking away does not register as a completed rescue.

Onimusha Way of the Sword How to Rescue Townspeople

Citizen Savior Trophy – Rescue 30 Townspeople

    Trophy Type: Bronze
Requirement: Rescue 30 townspeople from marauding Genma

This is the main trophy tied to the rescue system. You need to successfully save 30 different citizens across the whole game. There is no time limit on when you need to hit 30 – rescues carry over between sessions and into New Game+ if needed.

You will not hit 30 in one sitting by just rushing the story. These events are spread across the entire game and happen at their own pace as you explore. The more time you spend wandering Kyoto and its surrounding areas, the more rescue events you will naturally trigger. If you play at a normal pace, explore areas before pushing story missions, and always respond to the ! icon when you see it, you should approach 30 or surpass it before the final mission.

If you finish the story without reaching 30, keep in mind that rescues carry over into New Game+. Whatever count you had from your first run adds to your total on the second run, so you can clean up the remaining saves on a NG+ Carnage playthrough without starting from zero. This makes the trophy much less stressful than it might sound.

Selfish Selflessness Trophy – Save a Merchant

    Trophy Type: Bronze
Requirement: Rescue a merchant that is being attacked by Genma

This trophy has the same mechanic as regular citizen rescues but requires you to save a merchant specifically rather than any citizen. Merchants appear throughout Kyoto selling items and materials, and occasionally a Genma attack will target one of them.

When the ! icon appears and the target turns out to be a merchant under attack, rush over and deal with the Genma the same way you would for any rescue. Kill them all, then talk to the merchant to complete it. The Selfish Selflessness trophy pops as soon as that conversation ends.

You cannot force merchant rescues to happen – they appear randomly like all other rescue events. Just keep your eyes on the minimap while exploring merchant-heavy areas of Kyoto. If you are exploring regularly and responding to every ! icon you see, this one will come up naturally at some point during your playthrough.

How the Rescue System Works – Step by Step

Here is the exact process every time a rescue event fires:

    1. You see an exclamation mark (!) icon pop up on your map or minimap while exploring Kyoto.
    2. Sprint toward it immediately. The Genma will not pause – the citizen’s health is ticking down from the moment the event starts.
    3. When you reach the icon location, kill all attacking Genma in the area. Use your fastest moves to end the fight quickly.
    4. After all enemies are down, walk to the survivor and press interact to talk to them. This is what registers the rescue.
    5. The citizen thanks you, gives a reward, and the rescue is counted.

If the citizen dies before you get there or before you finish the enemies, the event fails. There is no penalty for failing – no resource loss, no punishment. The event just ends and you move on. Another rescue opportunity will come up later.

    What Rewards Do You Get?

Citizens you rescue will give you items as thanks. The rewards are not rare or game-changing, but they are genuinely useful during regular play. You can expect to receive:

    • Consumables – Hozuki berries (healing items) and similar supplies
    • Basic upgrade materials – items like Hempen Cloth and Cotton Cloth used for early equipment upgrades
    • Miscellaneous items – small items that can be traded for Favor to upgrade Charms

Merchant rescues may occasionally give slightly better loot than standard citizen rescues, given that the rescued NPC is a trader. The rewards add up over 30 rescues and provide a solid stream of consumables and crafting materials that help keep you topped up through the mid-game.

Tips for Getting 30 Rescues Without Grinding

Explore Instead of Fast Travelling Everywhere

Rescue events only trigger when you are actually moving through Kyoto on foot. If you fast travel via Spirit Mirrors between every objective you will miss a huge number of rescue spawns. Walk the streets between story missions and Chance Encounters whenever it is reasonable. The ! icons appear naturally as you pass through each area, and you will rack up rescues without even thinking about them.

    Watch Your Minimap Constantly

The exclamation mark is easy to miss if you are focused on exploring or fighting other enemies. Keep a regular eye on the minimap while moving through any zone. As soon as you see the !, stop what you are doing and redirect toward it. Distance matters – the Genma are not going to hold off forever.

    Do Not Rush Story Missions

The more time you spend in Kyoto’s open-town zone before pushing the main story forward, the more rescue events you will encounter. After each main mission unlocks a new area or a new batch of Chance Encounters, take time to explore the newly opened zones before heading to the next story objective. This is also when new rescue events tend to appear most frequently in those areas.

Rescue Events Respawn in Cleared Areas

You do not need to find brand new areas to keep seeing rescue events. Already-visited parts of Kyoto will continue to generate random attacks on citizens as long as there are still civilians living in those zones. Revisiting areas you have already cleared for collectibles or materials will still produce rescue opportunities.

Do Not Worry If You Are Falling Short

If you get to the end of the story with 20 or 25 rescues instead of 30, do not stress. Your count carries directly into New Game+. You only need to save the remaining few on your Carnage run, not redo all 30 from scratch. This makes it one of the least painful trophy requirements in the whole game.

    Trophies at a Glance

    • Citizen Savior (Bronze) – Rescue 30 townspeople from marauding Genma. Carries over into NG+.
    • Selfish Selflessness (Bronze) – Rescue one merchant being attacked by Genma. Pops on first merchant rescue.

Both are Bronze trophies and neither requires a specific area or time window. Just play naturally, respond to every ! icon you see, talk to survivors after each rescue, and both trophies come in the normal course of the game. If you are going for the Platinum, check out our full Platinum trophy roadmap for the most efficient order to knock everything out across both runs.

How Rescues Fit Into the Bigger Picture

Townspeople rescues are one of several ways the game rewards you for exploring Kyoto rather than beelining through missions. The open-town design means that wandering pays off in multiple ways at once – you stumble on rescue events, spot Lion Dog statues, find hidden chests with Oni Vision, and trigger Chance Encounters all in the same stroll through a neighborhood.

If you treat Kyoto as a place worth walking around in rather than just a menu of fast travel points, you will hit 30 rescues as a natural side effect of playing the game fully. The citizens you save also provide the small consumable and material top-ups that keep your Hozuki Pouches stocked and Favor flowing for Charm upgrades. It is a system that rewards the habit of being present in the world rather than skipping past it.
