How Many Collectibles Are in Onimusha Way of the Sword?

The game has 273 collectible locations across all areas. That sounds like a lot, and honestly it is. But nothing is permanently missable. You can free-roam and find everything right up until you hit the Point of No Return before the final mission called “The Clash at Rendaino.” If you keep a manual save at that point, you can still go back and clean up anything you missed.

Here is the full breakdown of every collectible type and the trophy each one unlocks:

    • 36 Lion Dogs – Trophy: For the Love of Dog
    • 23 Genma Notes – Trophy: Genma-ologist
    • 18 Chance Encounters – Trophy: No Job Too Small
    • 15 Charms – Trophy: Charmed Life
    • 9 Hozuki Pouches – Trophy: Medical Marvel
    • 8 Mysteries of Kyoto – Trophy: Demystified
    • 7 Oni Armaments – Trophy: Oni Armory
    • 53 Power Stones (Skill Upgrade Material) – Trophy: Well-Rounded
    • 54 Oni Stones (Skill Upgrade Material) – Trophy: Well-Rounded
    • 25 Fine Silk Cloths (Equipment Upgrade Material) – Trophy: Dressed to Kill
    • 25 Tamahagane (Equipment Upgrade Material) – Trophy: Dressed to Kill

The Well-Rounded trophy also needs you to buy all Basic and Special Skill Upgrades. The Dressed to Kill trophy needs all equipment fully enhanced.

The Most Important Skill to Unlock First

Before you do anything else, unlock Oni Vision: Treasures from the Special Skills menu. It costs Oni Stones and becomes available just a few hours into the game. Once active, every time you use your Oni Vision (hold L2/LT and press R2/RT), it highlights nearby items and chests in the environment. This one skill alone will save you a huge amount of time hunting for materials and hidden chests throughout the game.

There is also Oni Vision: Treasures 2 and Oni Vision: Search Range to unlock later. Together, the three make collecting far easier. Hold off spending your Oni Stones on other things until you have these three first.

Onimusha Way of the Sword All Lion Dogs (36 Total)

Lion Dogs are small stone guardian statues scattered all over Kyoto and a couple of other maps in the game. Collecting them unlocks the ability to change the visual appearance of your sword, which is purely cosmetic. You will see them marked on your map with a pawprint icon, which makes tracking them down a lot more straightforward than other collectibles.

A few important things to know:

    • Lion Dogs only become active after you complete the mission “What Lurks in the Shadows.”
    • Lion Dogs on maps outside of Kyoto will not appear until you have liberated that entire map and beaten its final boss.
    • They span multiple areas including Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Nijo-jo Castle, and further zones unlocked later in the game.

For the full location breakdown area by area, visit our dedicated Lion Dog locations guide.

Onimusha Way of the Sword All Genma Notes (23 Total)

Genma Notes are lore entries that fill out the enemy bestiary. They detail the enemies you fight throughout the game, including bosses. These are the trickiest collectibles in the game for one reason: they are not marked on the map at all. Every other collectible type gets a map marker eventually – Genma Notes do not.

They are found inside hidden chests that you have to reveal first. When you are near a hidden chest, your Oni Gauntlet will glow. Use your Oni Power in that spot to reveal the chest, then open it to collect the note inside. There are 23 total, and several are tied to specific boss arenas – so you go back to the place where you first fought a boss to find their corresponding note.

The final Genma Note (#23) is found during the actual final mission after the Point of No Return, so do not panic if you are at 22 and cannot find the last one. Check our full Genma Notes locations guide for every spot.

Onimusha Way of the Sword All Charms (15 Total)

Charms are equippable items that boost Miyamoto Musashi’s abilities in combat. They go in the Equipment screen and can be switched out freely. Collecting and fully upgrading all 15 Charms is what gets you the Charmed Life trophy.

You cannot enhance Charms right away. The upgrade system unlocks after you complete the mission “The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu.” After that, speak to the shrine in the southeast corner of Emma’s Hall to upgrade them. Upgrading costs Red Souls and Favor. Red Souls come from killing enemies, and Favor comes from trading in items.

Several Charms are rewards for completing Mysteries of Kyoto or specific Chance Encounters rather than found as physical items in the world. For example:

    • Fencer’s Strength Charm – Complete “The Faceless” Mystery
    • Blazing Charm – Complete “Worm-ly Ways” Mystery
    • Oni Strength Charm – Complete “Some Unfinished Monkey Business” Mystery
    • Charm of Protection – Complete “The Night Parade” Mystery
    • Charm of Awakening – Complete “A Fishy Story” Chance Encounter
    • Charm of Oni Power – Complete “Restless Spirits” Chance Encounter

This means you have to do the side content to get them all. See our Charms locations guide and our full Charms guide with best builds for the complete picture.

Onimusha Way of the Sword All Hozuki Pouches (9 Total)

Hozuki Pouches are health items – collecting and fully upgrading all 9 of them earns you the Medical Marvel trophy. The first upgrade opportunity comes when you speak with Okuni during the mission “Patching up the Pouch.” She sends you out to find the materials needed to upgrade it.

These pouches are found throughout the game in chests and as mission rewards. Some are in easy-to-miss spots, so be thorough as you explore each area. Check our Hozuki Pouches guide for every location.

Onimusha Way of the Sword All Oni Armaments (7 Total)

Oni Armaments are special weapons you find throughout the game that slot into your Oni Gauntlet. Each one gives you a unique Oni Power ability to use in combat – they are not just cosmetic. Collecting all 7 earns you the Oni Armory trophy.

They are found in chests hidden in specific locations, some of which require exploration off the main path. For example, one is in a cave you have to slide to enter, and another is in the northeast corner of the Swamp of Arashiyama. For the full list and where each one is, see our Oni Armaments locations guide. If you want to know what each one does in combat, our Oni Armaments and Oni Power abilities guide breaks them all down.

Onimusha Way of the Sword All Mysteries of Kyoto (8 Total)

Mysteries of Kyoto are optional multi-step quests you find and track in the Curious Cases menu under Observations. Think of them as bigger side quests with their own story beats and enemy encounters. Completing all 8 unlocks the Demystified trophy.

They are marked on the map with a butterfly icon. A few things to know:

    • They do not unlock until you complete “What Lurks in the Shadows.”
    • Some only become available after specific main story missions. The easiest way to unlock everything is to progress until after you complete “The Demon on the Mount,” at which point nearly all of them are accessible.
    • They do not carry over into New Game+, so do all 8 in your first playthrough.
    • Several reward you with Charms when you finish them.

The 8 Mysteries are: The Light of Vengeance, A Wife’s Prayer, Something in the Water, The Blessed Man, The Night Parade, The Faceless, The Three Worms (Worm-ly Ways), and Hanging Monkeys (Some Unfinished Monkey Business).

Onimusha Way of the Sword All Chance Encounters (18 Total)

Chance Encounters are the game’s side missions. They show up on the map as notebook icons and start by talking to an NPC at that location. Completing all 18 earns you the No Job Too Small trophy. Some of these are timed – a Genma attack on a citizen, for example, will not wait for you to wander over. If you fail one, do not worry, it will eventually become available again.

Some Chance Encounters give you Charms, Tamahagane, or Power Stones as rewards, so they are worth doing beyond just the trophy. Like the Mysteries, Chance Encounters do not carry over into New Game+.

    Examples of Chance Encounters include:

    • Pale Lights in a Night Sky
    • Clear Space, Clear Mind
    • Ace Archer (multiple locations)
    • Hidden Treasure (5 total hidden within the Chance Encounter list)
    • The Growling Ghost
    • An Ugly Business
    • A Fishy Story
    • Restless Spirits

The Hidden Treasure Chance Encounters deserve a mention on their own. For each one, an NPC gives you an old drawing that hints at a specific location on the map. The map gives you only a general area, so you have to use your Oni Eyes to spot and uncover the actual treasure. There are 5 Hidden Treasure quests in total.

Upgrade Materials – Power Stones, Oni Stones, Fine Silk Cloth, and Tamahagane

These are not traditional collectibles but you need to find every single one to get the Well-Rounded and Dressed to Kill trophies. Here is what each one does:

    Power Stones (53 Total)

Power Stones are used to unlock Skill Upgrades on the skill tree. You can find enough in a single playthrough to buy all the skills. They are found in chests throughout all areas of the game, and several come as rewards for completing missions and Chance Encounters. Our Power Stones locations guide has the full list.

    Oni Stones (54 Total)

Oni Stones are also used for Skill Upgrades, particularly for Gauntlet upgrades. Here is the catch: you cannot find enough Oni Stones in a single playthrough to fully upgrade everything. Your skills carry over into New Game+, and Oni Stones respawn, so you collect the last few on your second run. Do not waste them early – save them for the Oni Vision upgrades mentioned above first.

    Fine Silk Cloth (25 Total)

Fine Silk Cloths are equipment enhancement materials used to upgrade your clothing to higher proficiency levels. They are found in chests across all game areas, with some tucked in spots like the Southwest of the Swamp of Arashiyama and inside Shanaoh Castle. One is found in a Hidden Oni Treasure chest.

    Tamahagane (25 Total)

Tamahagane is the rarer equipment upgrade material used alongside Fine Silk Cloth to fully enhance your gear. Like Fine Silk Cloth, they are in chests throughout the world. One comes as a reward for completing the “Ace Archer: Arashiyama” Chance Encounter, and another is found in a chest right after the Byakue fight inside Shanaoh Castle. Check our guide on how to beat Byakue if you are struggling with that fight.

What Does Not Carry Over Into New Game+

If you are planning a second playthrough for Carnage difficulty, know that some things reset. The following do not carry over into New Game+:

    • Mysteries of Kyoto
    • Chance Encounters
    • Clothing and Sword/Gauntlet Enhancements
    • Red Souls
    • Spirit Mirror unlock progress

Skills, Oni Stones, and Power Stones you have collected do carry over. Do all your Mysteries and Chance Encounters in the first playthrough because you will have to start them fresh in NG+.

    Tips for Finding All Collectibles

    Unlock Oni Vision: Treasures Early

We said it above but it is worth repeating. This skill is the single biggest time-saver in the entire collectibles hunt. Unlock it as soon as the Special Skills menu opens up.

Do Side Content as You Progress

Do not save all the side content for the end. Chances are you will miss some of the time-sensitive Chance Encounters that trigger spontaneously. Play through the story and knock out Mysteries and Chance Encounters as they appear in each area.

Save a Manual File Before the Final Mission

The Point of No Return is right before “The Clash at Rendaino.” If you miss a collectible or want to go back, having a manual save here means you can still access everything. The game does let you Continue and return after the credits too, but a manual save is a safety net.

Check Boss Arenas for Genma Notes

Most Genma Notes tied to bosses are in chests hidden near where the boss fights happened. After you beat a boss, revisit the arena with your Oni Vision active to find the note. Our full boss list guide can remind you where each fight took place.

Revisit Cleared Areas After Story Progress

Some Lion Dogs and Mysteries only unlock after specific story missions. If an area feels bare, check back after your next big story beat. New collectibles often appear in already-visited zones as the story moves forward.

Buy Materials from Yorimasa When You Can

A few hours into the game, you unlock Yorimasa’s shrine after purifying the Yasui Konpiragu shrine. Yorimasa sells useful upgrade materials for Red Souls. Check back after every major mission because his stock expands. It is an easy way to supplement materials you are short on without grinding enemies.

    Collectibles and Trophy Connection

Almost every collectible type links directly to a trophy. Here is a clean overview:

    • For the Love of Dog – All 36 Lion Dogs
    • Genma-ologist – All 23 Genma Notes
    • No Job Too Small – All 18 Chance Encounters
    • Charmed Life – All 15 Charms (found and fully upgraded)
    • Medical Marvel – All 9 Hozuki Pouches (found and fully upgraded)
    • Demystified – All 8 Mysteries of Kyoto
    • Oni Armory – All 7 Oni Armaments
    • Well-Rounded – All Skill Upgrades (needs 53 Power Stones + 54 Oni Stones)
    • Dressed to Kill – All Equipment Enhanced (needs 25 Fine Silk Cloths + 25 Tamahagane)

If you are going for the Platinum, getting all collectibles is a big part of the journey. The game has an estimated 60–70 hours for full completion, including a second playthrough on Carnage difficulty. For the full trophy roadmap visit our trophy and achievements platinum roadmap.
