TL;DR
- There are 54 Power Stones in Onimusha Way of the Sword.
- 23 are found in world chests you must locate yourself.
- 17 are rewards for completing main missions and Oni Portals — you get these automatically.
- 14 come from Chance Encounters and Mysteries of Kyoto.
- You can collect enough Power Stones in one playthrough to buy all skills — unlike Oni Stones.
- Finding and spending all Power Stones on skills unlocks the Well-Rounded trophy/achievement.
- Power Stones #51 and #52 only arrive after completing the final mission — so buy everything else first.
- None are permanently missable — free roam stays open until “The Clash At Rendaino.”
Onimusha Way of the Sword All Power Stones are the upgrade currency for Musashi’s entire combat skill tree. Skills like Reflex Combo, Chain Issen, Deflect, Blazing State, Petrify, Flat-Out Sprint, and most Oni Bow upgrades all cost Power Stones when you unlock them at a Spirit Mirror. You need every single one of those skills purchased to earn the Well-Rounded trophy and achievement. This guide covers all 54 Power Stone locations — every world chest, every mission reward, and every side activity that pays them out — so you can get the full set without missing anything.
Power Stones are a different resource from Oni Stones. Power Stones pay for basic and special skills. Oni Stones pay for Oni Gauntlet upgrades. The two grind separately, and only Power Stones can be fully collected in one playthrough. If you want to understand how both fit into the broader upgrade system, see our Oni Armaments guide and our full combat and controls guide.
What Power Stones Are Used For
Power Stones are spent at any Spirit Mirror under the Enhance Equipment/Abilities menu. Each skill in your basic and special skill list has a fixed Power Stone cost. Once purchased, the skill is yours permanently and carries over into New Game+.
The skills that matter most for the Well-Rounded trophy are the ones you might skip if you are focused on combat power early — utility moves like Deflect, Petrify, and the Oni Bow skill upgrades. Do not ignore those. Every skill in the menu needs to be purchased, not just the combat ones. For tips on which skills to prioritise first, see our tips and tricks for beginners.
One important timing note: Power Stones #51 and #52 only drop after you complete the final mission “The Clash At Rendaino.” By the time they land, everything else will already be bought. So do not hold off on purchases waiting for “enough stones” — spend as you go and the last two will top you off after the credits.
How to Find Power Stone Chests Faster
Most Power Stone chests are visible without Oni Vision, but a few are tucked in alcoves, behind Malice Barriers, or at the end of side paths that are easy to miss. Three Oni Gauntlet skills make the sweep much faster:
- Oni Vision: Treasures — reveals nearby hidden chests when you activate Oni Vision.
- Oni Vision: Treasures 2 — extends the detection range further.
- Oni Vision: Search Range — widens the scan area even more.
Buy all three as early as possible. Then hold L2 + R2 (or LT + RT on Xbox) as you walk through each area. Treasure markers will appear on screen and get pinned to your map automatically. You can mark them and return later without worrying about forgetting them. For more on how Spirit Mirrors and the upgrade system work together, see our Spirit Mirrors guide.
All 54 Power Stones – World Chest Locations (23 Total)
These are the stones you have to actively find. They sit in chests across every major area of the game. None are permanently missable — free roam stays open until the Point of No Return before the final mission.
Oni Refuge
Power Stone #1 — In a chest on a small island inside the Oni Refuge. Look between the main land and the island for a collapsed bridge. Shoot it with an arrow from the Oni Bow to raise it, then cross over and open the chest.
Eastern Kyoto
Power Stone #7 — Found in a chest in a small courtyard southeast of the Kamo River – East Spirit Mirror in Kyoto. The courtyard is a short walk from the mirror.
Power Stone #10 — Found in a chest north of the Kiyomizu-zaka Slope Spirit Mirror in Eastern Kyoto.
Power Stone #13 — Found in a chest on the west island of Kyoto. You need to reach the island by crossing the water in that area.
Power Stone #22 — Found in a chest southwest of the Gojo Street – West Spirit Mirror. Head southwest from the mirror and scan the area with Oni Vision.
Power Stone #28 + #29 — Found in a chest in the arena where you fought Sasaki Ganryu, next to the Yasaka Pagoda Spirit Mirror. Return to that arena after the fight and loot the chest. For the Sasaki Ganryu fight itself, see our Sasaki Ganryu boss guide.
Power Stone #34 + #35 — Found in the Hidden Oni Treasure #3 chest. This requires solving the Old Drawing No. 3 treasure hunt by matching the drawing’s depicted location to a spot on the Kyoto map, then using Oni Power to dig up the chest there.
Power Stone #42 + #43 — Found in the Hidden Oni Treasure #4 chest. Same process — match Old Drawing No. 4 to the correct location on the map and dig up the chest with Oni Power.
Power Stone #44 — Found in a chest north of the Higashioji Street Spirit Mirror. Head north from the mirror and check the area with Oni Vision.
Power Stone #45 — Found in a chest just outside Yasaka Shrine, to the south of the shrine entrance.
Underground Laboratory
Power Stone #8 — Found in a chest on Underground Level 3 of the Underground Laboratory. Navigate through Level 3 and check the area shown by your Treasure markers.
Kiyomizu-dera Temple
Power Stone #9 — Found in a chest inside Kiyomizu-dera Temple behind a Malice Barrier. Use Oni Power to break through the Malice Barrier and follow the path to the chest at the end. For a full guide to dealing with Malice, see our Malice fog guide.
Power Stone #18 — Found in a chest inside Kiyomizu-dera Temple, down the path behind the Oni Wall. Find the Oni Wall in the temple and take the side path behind it to reach the chest.
Mount Oe
Power Stone #36 — Found in a chest in the Valley area of Mount Oe. In the platform section, move the platforms around to reach a higher area, then go back to the platform you wall-ran on, drop down and follow the path. The chest is at the end of that lower route.
Power Stone #37 — Found in a chest in the same room as the Storehouse Spirit Mirror in Mount Oe. Easy to spot once you reach that Spirit Mirror.
Arashiyama
Power Stone #48 — Found in a chest in the bamboo grove in Arashiyama. Scan the grove with Oni Vision as you move through it.
Power Stone #49 — Found in a chest at the north end of the swamp in Arashiyama.
Power Stone #50 — Found in a second chest elsewhere in the Arashiyama swamp. Use Oni Vision to locate the exact spot as the swamp is large.
Power Stone #53 — Found in a chest at the dead end of the village west of the Hozu River Spirit Mirror in Arashiyama. Follow the village path to the very end.
Power Stone #54 — Found in a chest northwest of the Sandbar – Near Stage Spirit Mirror in Arashiyama. Head northwest from that mirror and check the area.

All Power Stones from Chance Encounters and Mysteries of Kyoto (14 Total)
These 14 stones are the ones most players finish the game without — because Chance Encounters and Mysteries of Kyoto are optional and easy to skip while chasing the main story. Make sure you are clearing all side content as it unlocks.
- Chance Encounters unlock after completing “The Curse of Kiyomizu-zaka Slope.”
- Mysteries of Kyoto unlock after completing “What Lurks in the Shadows.”
| Power Stone(s) | Reward For | Type |
|---|---|---|
| #16 + #17 | “A Wife’s Prayer” | Mystery of Kyoto |
| #19 + #20 | “Ace Archer: Nijo-jo Castle” | Chance Encounter |
| #21 | “An Ugly Business” | Chance Encounter |
| #24 + #25 | “The Growling Ghost” | Chance Encounter |
| #26 + #27 | “Ace Archer: Kyoto Imperial Palace” | Chance Encounter |
| #40 + #41 | “The Night Parade” | Mystery of Kyoto |
Several of these Chance Encounters also reward Charms, so clearing them does double duty for your trophy progress. See our all 15 Charms locations guide to track those at the same time.
Tips to Collect All 54 Power Stones Without Missing Any
- Buy Oni Vision skills first. Oni Vision: Treasures, Treasures 2, and Search Range are the best early Oni Stone investments for collectors. They turn a blind sweep of each area into a reliable checklist.
- Do not skip Chance Encounters or Mysteries of Kyoto. Fourteen Power Stones — more than a quarter of the side-content total — only come from optional activities. Treat every one that appears in your log as mandatory.
- Complete the Hidden Oni Treasure hunts. Old Drawings #3 and #4 each lead to a chest with two Power Stones inside. These are some of the most commonly missed stones in the game.
- Keep a manual save at the Point of No Return. Before starting “The Clash At Rendaino,” save manually. All world chests and side activities stay accessible from that point. If you reload after the credits via Continue, you spawn back here.
- Spend Power Stones as you earn them. Do not stockpile them. The Well-Rounded trophy requires purchased skills, not just collected stones — and you will naturally have enough by the end of one playthrough if you do all side content.
- Power Stones reset for New Game+. Mysteries of Kyoto and Chance Encounters become available again in NG+, meaning you can re-earn those Power Stones. But since one playthrough is enough for the skill side, you only need NG+ for the Oni Stones to finish the Gauntlet.
Power Stones vs Oni Stones – Quick Difference
Players often confuse the two upgrade materials. Here is the short version:
- Power Stones — used to buy and upgrade basic skills and special skills at Spirit Mirrors. You can get all 54 in one playthrough.
- Oni Stones — used to upgrade the Oni Gauntlet and its abilities. You cannot get enough in one playthrough. The shortfall carries into New Game+, where you can collect them again.
The Well-Rounded trophy requires all skills fully purchased with Power Stones. A separate trophy covers full Gauntlet upgrades with Oni Stones. Both are required for the platinum. See our full trophy and achievement guide and platinum roadmap for the complete picture.
