TL;DR
- The Wild Oriole Sword is a one-handed weapon earned from Mu Xiaokui’s three-phase boss encounter in the Village of Lu during Chapter 3.
- It is missable — you must interact with all five of Mu Xiaokui’s ribbons before the fight to trigger the third phase that rewards it.
- After the fight, pick it up from the dock immediately — it does not follow you out of the area.
- Its core mechanic, Oriole Song, adds rending blade waves to heavy attacks for 10 seconds when activated.
- It has the fastest attack speed among one-handed weapons and is ranked among the best one-handers in the game.
- Power Surge is Wild Oriole Sword Art — a sustained flurry of rapid sword strikes.
- Soul Tempering with the Supreme Order Token adds Mu Tianmiao’s sword during Sha-Chi combos, turning it into a pseudo dual-wield with stronger blade waves during Oriole Song.
- It shines most in the late game when you have enough Sha-Chi stats to maintain Oriole Song consistently.
What Is the Phantom Blade Zero Wild Oriole Sword?
The Wild Oriole Sword is one of the sharpest, fastest one-handed weapons in Phantom Blade Zero. The game itself describes it as the Young Mistress’s keen, lightning-quick blade — and that description tells you everything you need to know about how it plays.
Where most one-handed weapons trade some speed for other benefits, the Wild Oriole Sword commits fully to aggression. Fast attacks, a unique powered-up state that adds mid-range blade waves to heavy hits, and a Power Surge that buries enemies under a relentless flurry of strikes. It rewards players who like to stay on the offensive and keep enemies under constant pressure.
The catch is that it takes some investment — in both obtaining it and upgrading it — to really see what it can do. The Oriole Song mechanic is the heart of this weapon, and learning to activate and use it efficiently is what separates casual use from truly getting the most out of it.

How to Get the Wild Oriole Sword — and Why It’s Easy to Miss
This is the most important section of this guide. The Wild Oriole Sword is missable. If you skip the required steps or leave the boss area too quickly, you lose access to it for the rest of that playthrough. Here’s exactly what to do.
Step 1 — Collect All Five of Mu Xiaokui’s Ribbons
Before you fight Mu Xiaokui, the final boss of the Village of Lu, you must interact with all five of her ribbons scattered throughout the region. This is tied to a side quest called Young Mistress. Finding all five ribbons is what triggers her third boss phase — the phase that rewards both the Wild Oriole Sword and the Fiend Saws.
If you skip this and go straight to the Mu Xiaokui fight, the third phase never appears. The rewards never drop. Don’t rush the Village of Lu — explore properly before heading to the final encounter.
The fifth ribbon appears just before the boss fight itself, near the Statue Grounds area, so you have one more chance to grab it immediately before the encounter if you’ve already found the other four.
Step 2 — Complete Mu Xiaokui’s Full Three-Phase Fight
With all five ribbons collected, Mu Xiaokui’s fight becomes a three-phase encounter:
- Phase 1 and Phase 2 — Both involve Mu Xiaokui herself.
- Phase 3 — Her bodyguards, Jade Dancer and Iron Fiend, join together as a duo fight. This is the unlock condition for the Wild Oriole Sword and Fiend Saws rewards.
The duo fight in Phase 3 is tough. Jade Dancer is fast and mobile while Iron Fiend hits hard. Try to isolate one and focus your damage, rather than letting both pressure you at the same time. Luring them apart with movement is the safest strategy.
Step 3 — Pick Up the Wild Oriole Sword From the Dock Before Leaving
After defeating Mu Xiaokui and her guardians, use the elevator in the area. Before leaving, open the door on the right side to enter a dock area. The Wild Oriole Sword is waiting there on the dock. Pick it up before progressing into the tunnels that connect Village of Lu to Pangzhen.
It does not follow you. Once you leave the area, it stays behind. This is the single most common reason players miss this weapon — they don’t realize the sword is waiting in a separate room off the exit path. Do not skip this step.
Wild Oriole Sword Stats and Base Properties
Here’s what the Wild Oriole Sword looks like on paper:
- Type: One-Handed
- Base Damage: 295
- Base Guard Break: 104
- Attack Speed: Fast — the fastest among one-handed weapons
- Ease of Use: Medium
- Core Perk: Oriole Song — heavy attacks fire a rending blade wave for 10 seconds when activated
- Power Surge: Wild Oriole Sword Art — a sustained flurry of rapid sword strikes
- Soul Temper Material: Supreme Order Token
The base damage is higher than most one-handed weapons, and combined with its attack speed, the Wild Oriole Sword has the highest raw damage output per second among one-handers. The Guard Break stat is on the lower end — this isn’t a shield-cracking weapon. It’s a pressure machine built for speed and sustained aggression.
The Oriole Song Mechanic Explained
Oriole Song is everything with this weapon. Understanding it is the difference between using it well and barely scratching its potential.
How to Activate Oriole Song
Press Block + Heavy Attack at the same time while holding the Wild Oriole Sword. This spends Sha-Chi to enter the Oriole Song powered-up state. On PlayStation, that’s L1 + Triangle. On PC, it’s the block and heavy attack key combination.
Oriole Song lasts for 10 seconds. During that window, every heavy attack you land fires a rending blade wave — a mid-range projectile that extends your attack reach and hits enemies you can’t physically reach with the blade itself.
What Oriole Song Does in Practice
Those blade waves are the real damage amplifier here. They let you hit enemies at medium range without closing in, apply pressure from angles the sword itself can’t reach, and pile on extra hits during combos you’re already running. In tight fights against bosses where you have solid movement and timing, Oriole Song turns the Wild Oriole Sword into a genuinely intimidating weapon.
The powered-up state only lasts 10 seconds though. That’s enough time to deal serious damage if you spend it wisely — but it forces you to be deliberate. You want to activate Oriole Song in a confirmed offensive window, not reactively when you’re under pressure.
The Sha-Chi Management Challenge
Here’s the real friction. Oriole Song costs Sha-Chi to activate. Heavy attacks during Oriole Song also drain Sha-Chi fast, especially if you’re chaining them. Spam too many heavy attacks and you’ll drain your meter completely in just a few hits — leaving yourself exposed with no energy and no blade waves.
This is why the Wild Oriole Sword is described as more effective later in the game when Soul’s stats are more developed. With higher Sha-Chi reserves and better resource management, you can activate Oriole Song more often, sustain it through heavy attack chains, and get more out of each window. Early on, you’ll have to be more selective about when and how you spend it.
Power Surge — Wild Oriole Sword Art
When your Sha-Chi meter is fully charged, activating the Power Surge unleashes Wild Oriole Sword Art — a sustained flurry of rapid sword strikes that hits fast and hits multiple times. It’s unblockable, like all Power Surges in the game, and the multi-hit nature makes it excellent at dealing sustained burst damage in a short window.
Use it on staggered or guard-broken enemies for maximum effect. A boss in their Breach state absorbs every hit of the flurry with no defensive response — that’s when the Wild Oriole Sword Art does its best work.
All Wild Oriole Sword Upgrade Perks
Weapon perks unlock at Levels 5, 10, 15, and 25 — the same for every weapon in Phantom Blade Zero. Here’s what the Wild Oriole Sword unlocks at each milestone:
Level 5 — Reckless Cleave
Unlocks a chargeable Reckless Cleave heavy attack. Hold the heavy attack inputs to charge it into a powerful hit. It’s useful for breaking guards and landing big single strikes, though with this weapon you’ll often prefer the speed of regular combos over the charge time.
Level 10 — First Passive Enhancement
Level 10 improves the weapon’s existing mechanics and expands how the sword handles in combat. This is the last point where you can reset for free without a Weapon Reforge Talisman, so test the Wild Oriole Sword properly up to here before deciding to invest further. Getting to Level 10 gives you a complete picture of how the sword actually feels in your hands.
Level 15 — Significant Improvement
At Level 15 the Wild Oriole Sword continues to scale in damage and efficiency. Reaching this threshold is recommended if you’re planning to use this as a primary weapon — the stats improvement is meaningful and the sword starts feeling significantly more capable in extended fights.
Level 25 — Full Potential
Level 25 represents the Wild Oriole Sword at its most developed form before Soul Tempering. By this point, Oriole Song hits harder, the attack speed advantage over other weapons is more pronounced, and the sustained damage output in combo chains is among the highest of any one-handed weapon. This level requires late-game upgrade materials, but the payoff makes the Wild Oriole Sword a top-tier offensive choice.
Soul Tempering the Wild Oriole Sword — Tianmiao Wild Oriole
Soul Tempering the Wild Oriole Sword transforms it into something special. The material required is the Supreme Order Token, which you get by speaking with Mu Xiaokui on the Crimson Forest’s Sha-Chi Tower rooftop, accessed beyond the Friendly Shadow Warden. This is a late-game encounter, so the Soul Tempering upgrade comes well after you first get the sword.
The Soul Tempering effect is called Tianmiao Wild Oriole:
- Tianmiao Wild Oriole: During Sha-Chi combos, Mu Tianmiao’s sword is wielded alongside the Wild Oriole Blade for dual-blade attacks. While Oriole Song is active, the Tianmiao Sword produces stronger, more powerful blade waves.
This is a dramatic upgrade. What was a single fast one-handed sword becomes a pseudo dual-wield weapon during Sha-Chi moves — a second sword appears and adds attacks to your combos. And during Oriole Song, those extra blade waves hit harder than the base version. The result is a weapon that starts feeling entirely different after Soul Tempering, with more visual flair, more hits per combo, and more mid-range pressure during Oriole Song.
Soul Tempering is handled through Myst in Pengzhen, unlocked around Chapter 4. It costs 5,000 Remnant Dust plus the Supreme Order Token. As always with Soul Tempering — it is permanent and irreversible. Make sure the Wild Oriole Sword is your long-term pick before committing.

Best Weapon Combinations With the Wild Oriole Sword
You carry two main weapons in Phantom Blade Zero and swap between them freely. The Wild Oriole Sword is an excellent primary weapon. Here’s what to pair it with:
Wild Oriole Sword + Outlaw Warblade
This is a strong pairing for sustainability. The Wild Oriole Sword hits fast and builds Sha-Chi quickly with its speed advantage. Switch to the Outlaw Warblade when your health drops — its light attacks restore HP through lifesteal, and its Bloodthirst Frenzy Power Surge heals massively with a big invincibility window. You get burst offense from the Wild Oriole Sword and recovery from the Warblade on demand.
Wild Oriole Sword + Tianxuan Bronze Sword
Two very different playstyles that complement each other well. Use the Wild Oriole Sword as your aggressive pressure weapon during clear openings. Switch to the Tianxuan Bronze Sword during tough defensive moments — its reduced Sha-Chi blocking cost lets you weather enemy pressure without draining your energy. One weapon for offense, one for defense.
Wild Oriole Sword + Two-Handed Weapon
Pairing with a two-handed weapon covers the Wild Oriole Sword’s lower Guard Break stat. Use the two-hander against shielded enemies or bosses that need their guard cracked, then switch to the Wild Oriole Sword once the guard is broken for fast follow-up combos. The Sanguine Reach or Outlaw Warblade are both solid two-handed options here. See our Sanguine Reach weapon guide for details.
Wild Oriole Sword + Fanatic’s Broken Blade
Two fast, aggressive one-handed weapons that both reward offensive play. The Fanatic’s Broken Blade adds long-range melee options, while the Wild Oriole Sword adds mid-range blade waves through Oriole Song. Together, they cover different distance bands and keep constant pressure on the enemy from multiple angles.
Is the Wild Oriole Sword Worth It?
Yes — and it’s ranked among the top one-handed weapons in the whole game. Players who have tested every weapon consistently place it at A-tier or above, with some ranking it as the best one-hander overall.
The speed advantage is real. No other one-handed weapon hits as fast, and that attack speed difference is noticeable in actual combat — especially when chaining combos and filling Sha-Chi for Power Surge. Oriole Song’s blade waves add an offensive range and pressure option that most one-handers simply don’t have. And after Soul Tempering, the Tianmiao Wild Oriole transformation is one of the most visually and mechanically impressive weapon upgrades in the game.
The main caveat is the Sha-Chi management challenge. The Wild Oriole Sword asks more of you in terms of resource awareness than a simpler weapon like Sanguine. You need to know when to activate Oriole Song, how many heavy attacks you can chain before your meter drops, and how to recover Sha-Chi through smart weapon switching. Once you understand those rhythms, the sword becomes consistently excellent. Before that — it can feel inconsistent.
Bottom line: if you enjoy fast, aggressive one-handed swordplay and like having a ranged damage option built into your moveset, this is your weapon. Just don’t miss it.
Wild Oriole Sword Tips and Tricks
- Collect all five ribbons before the Mu Xiaokui fight. This is non-negotiable. No ribbons, no third phase, no Wild Oriole Sword. Explore the Village of Lu fully before heading to the final encounter.
- Pick up the sword from the dock immediately after the fight. Use the elevator, turn right, grab it before going through the exit. Don’t leave without it.
- Activate Oriole Song in confirmed offensive windows. Don’t waste your Sha-Chi by triggering it reactively. Activate when you have an open enemy or a staggered boss, then make every heavy attack count during those 10 seconds.
- Don’t spam heavy attacks during Oriole Song. You’ll drain your Sha-Chi in seconds and lose the powered-up state early. Mix heavy attacks with light attack strings to extend the window.
- Use Power Surge on breached enemies. Wild Oriole Sword Art hits many times. A boss in their Breach state can’t respond — every hit lands cleanly.
- Weapon switching restores Sha-Chi. Swap to your secondary weapon and back to recover meter faster. This makes the Wild Oriole Sword more sustainable when paired with a good secondary.
- Test to Level 10 before committing past it. Free refunds apply up to Level 9. Get to Level 10 to see the weapon’s developing potential, then decide if you’re in for the long run.
- Soul Tempering is a late-game upgrade. The Supreme Order Token comes from speaking with Mu Xiaokui on the Crimson Forest’s Sha-Chi Tower rooftop — you won’t access this until deep into the story. Plan for it but don’t rush it.
- This sword gets better as you progress. With more Sha-Chi and better stats in the late game, Oriole Song activates more often and lasts more effectively. Early use is solid, but its ceiling is late-game.
