Phantom Blade Zero Sanguine Reach Weapon Guide – Location, Upgrades & Tips

    By Eva Roberts · October 30, 2026 · 10 min read
    Phantom Blade Zero Sanguine Reach

The Sanguine Reach is Phantom Blade Zero’s two-handed long blade — the heavy option in the Sanguine weapon family. Where the base Sanguine gives you balanced speed and the Sanguine Twin gives you rapid dual strikes, the Reach trades both of those for something they can’t match: range and space control. Wide sweeping attacks, crowd management, and a Blade Force system that rewards staying in the fight all make this a weapon worth investing in.

This guide covers where to pick up the Sanguine Reach, all its upgrade perks, how to Soul Temper it into the Blazing Edge, and tips to make it work in combat.

Phantom Blade Zero Sanguine Reach – TL;DR

    • The Sanguine Reach is a Two-Handed weapon found at the Weeping Creek Valley Outpost
    • It’s on a weapon rack directly beside Forge — you can’t miss it when you first meet him
    • Base stats: 206 DMG and 108 Guard Break
    • Built for space control and crowd management — wide sweeping L2 attacks hit multiple enemies at once
    • Level 5 perk: Whirlwind Slash — a Sha-Chi-consuming spinning attack, but locks weapon switching for 15 seconds
    • Level 15 perk: Blade Force — clash with enemy attacks to stack charges, then spend them for boosted damage for 25 seconds
    • Level 25 perk: Tempest Wheel — an enhanced Whirlwind Slash that spends all Blade Force stacks at once
    • Can be Soul Tempered into Blazing Edge using the Flaming Grip material
    • Best paired with a faster swap weapon to cover its slower startup
    • Upgrade refunds are free up to level 10, then cost a Weapon Reforge Talisman

Where to Find the Sanguine Reach in Phantom Blade Zero

The Sanguine Reach is one of the easiest weapons in the game to collect. When you first meet Forge at the Mandate Outpost in Weeping Creek Valley and unlock weapon upgrades, look immediately to his right. There’s a weapon rack leaning against the wall with the Sanguine Reach sitting on it. It’s not hidden, not behind a side quest, and not a boss reward. Just pick it up and it’s yours.

    Region: Weeping Creek Valley
Exact location: Weapon rack beside Forge’s smithy at the Mandate Outpost

Don’t walk past it. First-time players sometimes rush to upgrade their existing weapons and miss the rack entirely. Take a second to grab it while you’re there — it costs nothing and gives you a free two-handed option to test before spending any upgrade materials.

If you’re exploring the Outpost area and need help with other collectibles nearby, see our guide to unlocking the western side of the Outpost and our Forest Outpost Courtyard Key location guide.

Sanguine Reach – Stats and Weapon Overview

    • Type: Two-Handed (Primary Blade)
    • Base Damage: 206
    • Guard Break: 108
    • Creator: Forge — crafted from the same material as the original Sanguine
    • Power Surge: Longblade Chain Strikes — a repeated series of long, sweeping blade swipes

On paper the Sanguine Reach has lower base damage than the standard Sanguine (227) and lower Guard Break than the Wooden Sanguine (188). But those numbers don’t tell the full story. The Reach’s advantage is its reach — literally. Its attack arcs cover a much wider area than any one-handed weapon, making it the go-to option whenever you’re dealing with groups of enemies or want to control space around you. Start a combo from further away, sweep through multiple targets at once, and punish anyone who tries to circle you.

Sanguine Reach – All Upgrade Perks

Perks unlock at levels 5, 10, 15, and 25, with a level cap of 30. Here’s what the Sanguine Reach gains as you invest in it:

    Level 5 – Whirlwind Slash

Press L1 + Triangle to consume a large amount of Sha-Chi and unleash a Whirlwind Slash. It’s a powerful spinning attack that covers the area around Soul. The catch: after using it, you cannot switch your main weapon for 15 seconds. That’s a meaningful window to be locked in, especially in fights where you need to weapon-swap to refill Sha-Chi. Use it when your position is stable, you have enough Sha-Chi to absorb the cost, and you don’t need the flexibility of a quick swap.

Level 10 – Class Perk (Shared)

Like the other Sanguine family weapons, the Sanguine Reach unlocks a shared two-handed class perk at level 10. Upgrading any weapon in a class can unlock techniques that apply across all weapons of the same type — so investing in the Reach can open up skills available to any two-handed blade you pick up later.

    Level 15 – Blade Force

This is where the Sanguine Reach gets interesting. When you clash with an enemy attack — trading blows rather than dodging or parrying — a Blade Clash triggers and builds Blade Force stacks. Once the meter is full, you gain increased damage and Sha-Chi Depletion for 25 seconds. It rewards playing dangerously close to the edge. You’re not supposed to avoid everything — you’re supposed to clash with the right attacks and bank those charges. Against bosses with predictable patterns, this turns into a sustained damage window every 25 seconds or so.

    Level 25 – Tempest Wheel

When Blade Force is fully stacked, press L1 + Triangle to spend all charges and unleash a powerful enhanced Whirlwind Slash. This is the Sanguine Reach’s high-end payoff move — the end of the upgrade line where all the Blade Force you’ve been building cashes out in one burst. Against bosses in a stagger window or during a phase transition, this can be one of the hardest-hitting moments in the game. Plan your Blade Force uptime around when it’ll matter most.

How to Soul Temper the Sanguine Reach – Blazing Edge

The Sanguine Reach can be permanently transformed into the Blazing Edge through Soul Tempering. This becomes available when you reach Pangzhen and speak to Myst at her tavern, which happens around Chapter 4 of the main story.

    • Soul Temper Material: Flaming Grip ×1
    • Result: Blazing Edge

The Blazing Edge is a fire-infused transformation of the Sanguine Reach — not just a visual upgrade, but a different weapon with its own identity. If you’ve been leaning into the Reach’s Blade Force system and enjoying the two-handed wide-swing playstyle, the Blazing Edge is the natural endpoint for that build.

Remember: Soul Tempering is irreversible. Regular weapon upgrades can be refunded at any Bell for free up to level 10, or by spending Weapon Reforge Talismans beyond that. But Soul Tempering itself cannot be undone. The Flaming Grip material is typically found later in the game as you progress past Pangzhen. Don’t rush to spend it — make sure the Sanguine Reach is your committed two-handed weapon first.

The Soul Temper material usually has a thematic connection to the weapon it unlocks. The Flaming Grip and the Blazing Edge follow that pattern — fire and force bound to the same long blade.

Sanguine Reach Combat Tips and Playstyle

Use the L2 to Control Groups

The Sanguine Reach’s L2 wide swings are its defining feature. When enemies are closing in from multiple directions, pressing L2 performs a sweeping arc that hits everything in front of and beside you. This is genuinely useful — not just stylish. Regular enemies in Phantom Blade Zero like to circle and crowd you, and the Reach answers that. Lead with a sweep when you’re surrounded, clear the space, then pick off whatever’s left.

Pair It With a Faster Swap Weapon

The Sanguine Reach is slower to start combos than one-handed weapons. Against fast enemies or bosses with tight punish windows, you won’t always have time to wind up the Reach’s heavier attacks. The fix is your second weapon slot. Equip a faster blade — the base Sanguine or Sanguine Twin are both good options — and use it for the moments that require quick attacks. Swap to the Reach when you have space and time to land its bigger swings. Switching weapons also fully restores your Sha-Chi, so this rotation costs you nothing.

    Build Blade Force Intentionally

Once you hit level 15, Blade Force becomes the backbone of this weapon’s damage output. But it only builds through Blade Clashes — that means trading hits with the enemy, not dodging or perfect-parrying through everything. Read enemy attack patterns and decide which hits are safe to clash with. Slower, telegraphed attacks are usually the best choices. Let those land on your blade, build the stacks, then activate the 25-second damage window and go hard. Try to time it for when an enemy is staggered or during a phase where they’re more vulnerable.

Don’t Pop Whirlwind Slash If You Need to Swap

The 15-second weapon switch lockout after Whirlwind Slash catches a lot of players off guard. If you use it and immediately run low on Sha-Chi, you have no way to refill via a weapon swap — you’re stuck. Only use Whirlwind Slash when your Sha-Chi pool is healthy enough to keep fighting without needing a swap for 15 seconds. Against regular enemies this is rarely a problem. Against bosses with unpredictable phases, be careful.

Use Power Surge After a Stagger

The Sanguine Reach’s Power Surge — Longblade Chain Strikes — is a series of wide sweeping blows. It hits regardless of the enemy’s guard state, but you get the most out of it when the enemy is staggered or guard-broken and can’t retaliate. Build your Sha-Chi Essence through normal attacks and parries, then drop the Power Surge the moment a boss opens up. For group fights, the Power Surge’s wide arcs can hit multiple enemies at once.

Great Starter Setup With Base Sanguine

If you’re new to the game and unsure what to run, Sanguine plus Sanguine Reach is one of the cleanest early setups available. The Sanguine handles fast combos and single-target pressure, while the Reach manages groups and spacing. Both are available before you fight your first major boss, and they cover each other’s weaknesses naturally. Upgrade both to level 5 to unlock their first perks and compare how they feel before committing further upgrade materials.

Best Phantom Edge Pairing for Sanguine Reach

The Sanguine Reach is built for arena control, so your Phantom Edge should complement that role:

    • For crowd management: A Phantom Edge with area stun or knockback keeps enemies in the Reach’s sweep zone and buys you time to set up the wider combos.
    • For boss pressure: A ranged Phantom Edge like the Night Owl bow lets you deal damage during phases where the boss is too far for the Reach’s melee arcs. This keeps your Sha-Chi building even when you can’t land hits directly.
    • For sustained damage: A Phantom Edge that boosts the Blade Force window or stacks a status effect while you’re in the 25-second Blade Force buff gives you a damage-over-time bonus on top of the Reach’s already-boosted output.

Is the Sanguine Reach Worth Upgrading?

It depends on your playstyle — but it’s a genuinely strong option and one of the best weapons for handling groups in the early and mid game. Its straightforward combos have good reach right from level 1, making it easy to use before you’ve unlocked any perks. At level 15 with Blade Force active it becomes something more: a weapon with a real mechanical loop that rewards patience and timing.

The one honest caveat: its later perks need more management than the Sanguine’s simple 40-second flat buff. If you want something reliable and hands-off, the base Sanguine is simpler. But if you’re willing to learn the Blade Force rhythm and build toward Tempest Wheel and the Blazing Edge transformation, the Sanguine Reach has one of the most satisfying upgrade payoffs of any weapon in the Sanguine family.
