TL;DR
- Nightmare Strands are optional high-difficulty challenge rooms found in each of Saros’s first seven biomes.
- They look like a gateway between two hands rising from the ground and appear on the map as a skull icon with an exclamation mark.
- They only activate after you trigger the Eclipse in that biome.
- Inside, you fight three waves of enemies with the Armor Impairment I modifier active — all incoming damage to Integrity is increased.
- Completing one restores your Second Chance. You can also intentionally die on the last wave to recover it if you’re low on health.
- Rewards include Lucenite, Power or Integrity Augments, a Large Aether, and containers.
- Completing all seven earns the Gold trophy “Nightmare Strands.”
What Is a Nightmare Strand in Saros?
As you explore the biomes in Saros, you will eventually spot a gateway that stands out from the rest of the environment. It looks like a portal framed by two large hands rising out of the ground. That is a Nightmare Strand — or more specifically, the entrance to a Nightmare Gate.
On your map, these show up as a skull-shaped icon with an exclamation mark inside it. The game is not being subtle. It is warning you that what’s inside is harder than anything in the regular biome.
Nightmare Strands are completely optional. You never have to enter one to finish the story. But they offer some of the best mid-run rewards available, and completing all of them is required for one of the game’s Gold trophies.

How to Access a Nightmare Strand
When you first find a Nightmare Strand in a biome, it might appear powered down with no active gate. This is normal. The gateway does not open until you have triggered the Eclipse in that biome. Once the Eclipse is active, walk back to the Nightmare Strand and the gate will be open.
There are a couple of additional access requirements for the first two biomes specifically:
- Shattered Rise (Biome 1): The Nightmare Strand here cannot be reached until you unlock the Grapple ability. If you have not unlocked it yet, see our guide on how to unlock the Grapple in Saros.
- Ancient Depths (Biome 2): The Nightmare Strand here requires unlocking Eclipse Threads before you can access it.
This means the first Nightmare Strand you can actually enter is in the third biome, Shattered Descent. From Biome 3 onward, most Nightmare Strands become accessible as soon as the Eclipse is triggered on that run.
What Happens When You Enter a Nightmare Strand?
Before you step through the gate, a pop-up will appear telling you that completing the Strand will refill your Second Chance. Take a moment to read it and think about where your run currently stands.
Once inside, you face three waves of enemies back to back. These are not regular biome enemies — they hit harder. That’s because a specific Carcosan Modifier called Armor Impairment I is automatically active for the entire time you are inside the Nightmare Strand. This modifier increases all incoming damage to your Integrity, meaning every hit stings more than usual.
The modifier stays active only while you are inside. It does not carry over into the rest of your run once you leave. But while you’re in there, do not play carelessly.
One important note: if you have Second Chance turned off in your Carcosan Modifiers settings, completing a Nightmare Strand will not grant you one. The restore only works if Second Chance is enabled in your build.

Nightmare Strand Rewards
If you survive all three waves and complete the Nightmare Strand, here is what you can earn:
- Second Chance restored — The main reason most players enter. If you burned through it during the run, this gets it back.
- Lucenite — A solid amount from the enemy waves plus additional drops in the reward room.
- Power or Integrity Augments — Useful for boosting your stats mid-run.
- Large Aether — A valuable resource for upgrading your loadout.
- Possible Acolyte’s Wager — A rarer reward that does not always appear but is worth grabbing when it does.
- Containers — Additional loot to open after the waves are cleared.
The Lucenite gain alone — from the enemy waves combined with the reward room — can push your Proficiency up noticeably. Higher Proficiency means better weapons show up as drops throughout the rest of the run. That indirect benefit stacks on top of everything else.

Should You Enter a Nightmare Strand?
It depends on the state of your run. Here is how to think about it.
Enter if You’ve Lost Second Chance
If you burned through your Second Chance earlier in the run, completing a Nightmare Strand is one of the only ways to get it back mid-run. That safety net is extremely valuable heading into a boss fight. The risk of the three enemy waves is almost always worth it compared to tackling a boss without a backup life.
Enter if You Want the Loot Boost
Even if your Second Chance is intact, the Lucenite and Augments inside are genuinely good. Completing a Nightmare Strand gives your Proficiency a meaningful bump, which improves the quality of everything you find afterward. If your build is feeling weak, a Nightmare Strand can help course correct.
Skip if You’re Already in a Great Position
If you have high health, an active Second Chance, and a strong loadout, the risk-reward tilts the other way. The Armor Impairment I modifier makes every hit inside more dangerous than normal. Walking out with less health than you went in with is a real possibility if you play sloppy. In that case, it’s fine to pass and save your Integrity for the boss.
The Intentional Death Trick
Here’s something worth knowing. On the final wave of a Nightmare Strand, if you die intentionally, your Second Chance still gets restored — just as if you had completed it normally. This is useful when you’re very low on health and survival through the last wave looks unlikely anyway. Rather than dying to a random hit and losing your run, letting go on your own terms restores the Second Chance so you can continue.
That said, if you are healthy and in good shape, finish the Strand properly. Dying on purpose means you lose out on all the other rewards in the room.
How Many Nightmare Strands Are There?
There are seven Nightmare Strands in total — one in each of the first seven biomes in Saros. The eighth biome does not have one. Each Nightmare Gate respawns every cycle, so you are never locked out if you miss one on a particular run. They will be there again the next time through.
Here is a quick biome-by-biome breakdown:
- Biome 1 – Shattered Rise: Requires the Grapple to reach.
- Biome 2 – Ancient Depths: Requires Eclipse Threads to access.
- Biome 3 – Shattered Descent: First fully accessible Nightmare Strand. Active once Eclipse triggers.
- Biome 4 – Blighted Marsh: Located near the same room where you trigger the Eclipse. Hard to miss.
- Biome 5 – Desecrated Fortress: Encountered automatically during progression.
- Biome 6 – Acolyte’s Haven: Encountered automatically during progression.
- Biome 7 – Cathedral: Encountered automatically during progression.
For Biomes 3 through 7, the Nightmare Strands are placed along the main route and are hard to walk past without noticing them.
The Nightmare Strands Trophy
Completing all seven Nightmare Strands at least once earns you the “Nightmare Strands” Gold trophy. Since each gate reappears every cycle, you do not need to do all seven in a single run. Just work through them across multiple runs until each biome is checked off.
This trophy is also part of the path toward the Platinum. If you are working through everything, make a habit of clearing the Nightmare Strand every time you see one. You will get the trophy naturally and keep getting good rewards in the process. For a full overview of what it takes to Platinum the game, check out our complete Saros Trophy Guide.
Tips for Surviving Nightmare Strands
- Do not skip your Shield. Armor Impairment I makes every hit hurt more. Using your Shield to absorb projectiles is more important than ever inside a Nightmare Strand. It also charges your Power Weapon at the same time.
- Use your Power Weapon freely. You’re here for three contained waves. There’s no reason to save Power Weapon charges. Unload them to clear waves quickly and reduce the time you spend taking damage.
- Stay mobile. Dashing and jumping constantly is always the right call in Saros, but inside a Nightmare Strand it is non-negotiable. Enemies hit harder and you have less margin for standing still.
- Know your exit plan. If the third wave is going badly and your health is almost gone, consider whether the intentional death trick is a better call than pushing through and risking a full run loss.
- Come in with a decent build. Nightmare Strands are best entered mid-to-late in a biome run when your loadout is already solid. Entering one right at the start of a run with a weak weapon is asking for trouble.
Nightmare Strands and Boss Preparation
One of the best uses of a Nightmare Strand is as a pre-boss checkpoint. Most biomes place the Nightmare Strand somewhere along the route before the Overlord fight. If you complete it and come out with a restored Second Chance, Augments, and more Lucenite, you are in a much stronger position going into the boss.

Final Thoughts
Nightmare Strands are one of the best systems in Saros for recovering momentum mid-run. They are tough by design — the Armor Impairment I modifier is not there for decoration — but the rewards are real and the Second Chance restore alone can save a run that was heading south.
Get into the habit of checking the map for the skull icon in every biome. Clear each Nightmare Gate when your run is in a decent spot, work through all seven biomes over time, and the Gold trophy will come naturally.
