THE HERTA
Build Guide – Best Relics, Light Cone & Teams
❄ SS TIER DPS ❄Emanator of Erudition · Genius Society #83
The Herta — also known as “Big Herta” — is the true human form of the iconic 4-star Herta puppet, revealed as a 5-star Ice Erudition character in Honkai: Star Rail 3.0. As an Emanator of the Erudition (alongside Acheron), she brings unparalleled AoE damage to endgame content. She was first released in Version 3.0, has run twice more, and continues to hold a dominant position in the HSR 4.0 meta — consistently ranked top DPS in Pure Fiction, Memory of Chaos, and Apocalyptic Shadow.
Her kit revolves around two stacking resources: Interpretation (stacked on enemies by all ally attacks, up to 42 — amplifying damage taken) and Inspiration (her personal buff gained after using Ultimate, which powers her Enhanced Skill). She deals Ice AoE damage with her Skill, redistributes Interpretation stacks with her Ultimate to concentrate on priority targets, then unleashes her devastating Enhanced Skill “Hear Me Out” — a multi-wave AoE Ice nuke that scales with enemy Interpretation count. Her A4 trace provides the entire team an 80% CRIT DMG buff when paired with another Erudition character, making her one of the most team-buffing DPS units in the game.
Core Mechanics Explained
Best Light Cones
Into the Unreachable Veil
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Signature — Best in SlotWhy it’s #1: The Herta’s signature Light Cone, providing CRIT Rate +12–20% (scales per superimposition) and a massive +60–100% Skill and Ultimate DMG for 3 turns after using Ultimate. Critically, after using Ultimate (if 140+ Energy consumed), recovers 1 Skill Point — this Skill Point generation is invaluable since The Herta’s best teams all rely heavily on Skill Points. S1 is the recommended stop point; it edges out E1 in total DPS contribution while also solving team Skill Point economy.
Before Dawn
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Premium AlternativeStrong Non-Signature Option: Provides +60% CRIT DMG, +30% Skill and Ultimate DMG, and after using Skill or Ultimate, gains a buff that increases follow-up DMG by +80%. Since The Herta’s Enhanced Skill can trigger follow-up counting, this pairs respectably. Best for players who already own it from other characters (Jing Yuan). No Skill Point generation — requires more SP-positive teammates.
Scholar Lost in Erudition
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best Budget 5-StarRecommended for Non-Signature Owners: Grants CRIT Rate +12% plus a +20% Skill and Ultimate DMG bonus, with an additional +25% Skill DMG after using Ultimate. Works in both directions — the post-Ultimate Skill bonus perfectly aligns with The Herta’s Enhanced Skill timing. Significantly cheaper than the signature in terms of pulls, often available on Erudition banner reruns.
Geniuses’ Repose
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Craftable — F2P SolidBest F2P Accessible Option: Provides +24% CRIT DMG base, with additional +8% ATK per enemy defeated (stacks 3×). In Pure Fiction and Memory of Chaos where enemies die frequently, this stack bonus contributes meaningfully. Can be obtained from the Herta Shop and crafted, making it the best zero-pull option for The Herta.
Today Is Another Peaceful Day
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Battle PassHigh-Superimposition Stat Stick: At S5, provides a substantial DMG% bonus scaling with the wearer’s Max Energy — The Herta has 140 Energy, giving her a high ceiling on this bonus. At SS3–SS5 this approaches the performance of Scholar Lost in Erudition. Not recommended at S1–S2 where the scaling is weak; save for high superimpositions.
Night on the Milky Way
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Himeko’s LCSituational Multi-Enemy Pick: Increases ATK by +9% per enemy on the field (up to 5), and boosts DMG by +30% for one turn when an enemy is Weakness Broken. In 5-enemy fights The Herta hits 45% ATK from the passive alone — useful if you own this from Himeko usage and don’t have better options.
❄️ Light Cone Priority
Prioritize The Herta’s signature Into the Unreachable Veil — the Skill Point generation it provides is a genuine quality-of-life upgrade that lets her entire team use Skills more freely. If budget doesn’t allow, Scholar Lost in Erudition from the Erudition banner is a compelling and accessible alternative. Remember: a high-quality S1 Light Cone is often worth more than an Eidolon, especially compared to E1.
Best Relic Sets
4-Piece Cavity Relics
Why It’s #1: Directly amplifies The Herta’s two primary damage abilities — Skill and Ultimate. The post-Ultimate Skill bonus perfectly syncs with her rotation: use Ultimate → gain Inspiration → Enhanced Skill deals 45% more DMG. This set was effectively designed for her playstyle and remains best-in-slot in all content.
Why It Works: Solid Ice DMG and CRIT DMG amplification during the precise window The Herta uses her Enhanced Skill post-Ultimate. The 25% CRIT DMG window aligns well with her rotation timing. Falls slightly behind Scholar on average but is a respectable alternative, especially with very good substat rolls.
Planar Ornaments
Why It’s #1: Since The Herta always runs with another Erudition unit (required for her A4 CRIT DMG buff), this Planar Ornament’s CRIT Rate bonus is effectively unconditional — activating in every fight. The combined 24% stat boost (ATK + CRIT Rate) frees up substat budget to stack more CRIT DMG. Strongest option in any standard team build.
When to Use: If you struggle to maintain the Izumo Gensei condition (e.g., you don’t yet have a second Erudition unit) or simply have much better-rolled Rutilant Arena pieces, use this instead. The 20% Skill DMG bonus triggers easily once CRIT Rate exceeds 70%. Very competitive — often only 1–2% behind Izumo in average DPS.
Niche Pick: In compositions where The Herta is supplemented by follow-up attack support (Tribbie’s follow-ups, Jade), this ornament provides its bonus more consistently. The ultimate DMG boost synergizes with her already-strong post-redistribution Ultimate. Best in double-Erudition teams where Jade is the partner (Jade triggers many follow-ups).
❄️ Relic Farming Priority
Farm Scholar Lost in Erudition (Cavern of Corrosion: Path of Dreamdive) for your 4-piece body set — it’s also useful on Anaxa if you don’t have Genius of Brilliant Stars. For ornaments, Izumo Gensei (Simulated Universe: Swarm Disaster) is the priority. If your Izumo rolls are weak, Rutilant Arena (Simulated Universe: Gold and Gears) is a perfectly acceptable alternative with less farming commitment.
Stat Priorities
Main Stats
Target Stats
Substat Priority
- CRIT Rate — Target ≥ 80% at all times. With Izumo Gensei providing +12% and Scholar Lost in Erudition body providing +8%, you need roughly 60% from substats and equipment to hit 80%. Never sacrifice CRIT Rate in substats.
- CRIT DMG — The A4 80% CRIT DMG team buff means The Herta receives massive CRIT DMG passively. Stack more from substats to make the most of this multiplier — aim for 160%+ base CRIT DMG before the buff.
- ATK% — Primary scaling stat for all of The Herta’s abilities. Third priority after both CRIT stats are covered sufficiently.
- SPD — More turns means more Interpretation stacks applied, more energy generated, and more Enhanced Skills. Hitting 134+ SPD is mandatory; 160 is a secondary benchmark worth chasing with E2.
- ERR (Energy Regen Rate) — Only relevant if running ERR Rope. With ERR rope + ERR substats, The Herta can maintain a very tight Ultimate rotation for near-constant Enhanced Skill uptime.
❄️ CRIT Ratio Tip
The Herta’s A4 provides +80% CRIT DMG to the whole team but grants no additional CRIT Rate. This means you need to acquire CRIT Rate from your relic substats, main stats (body), and Izumo Gensei. Prioritize CRIT Rate first in all substat rolls, then invest in CRIT DMG. The recommended final ratio for most players is 80–90% CRIT Rate : 180–220% CRIT DMG (after the A4 passive in battle, this becomes 80–90% CR : 260–300% CDMG).
Trace Priority
- Skill — “One-Time Offer” / Enhanced: “Hear Me Out”
The Herta’s core damage source. Standard version hits primary and adjacent enemies; Enhanced version (with Inspiration) deals multi-wave Ice AoE scaling with Interpretation count on the primary target. Upgrade first — this is where 80% of her damage comes from. - Talent — Interpretation Application
Governs how efficiently Interpretation stacks are applied and maintained. Unlocking higher Talent levels increases stack application rate and damage multipliers tied to Interpretation. Critical for snowballing her power in multi-enemy fights. - Ultimate — “Magic… It’s Magic”
Deals Ice DMG to all enemies, redistributes Interpretation stacks, and grants Inspiration. Level up alongside Talent — the Ultimate multiplier increases are smaller than Skill/Talent but still meaningful, especially in single-target scenarios (400% multiplier with 1 enemy at max stack). - Basic Attack — “Speech: My Research”
Lowest priority. The Herta should rarely use Basic Attack in endgame — only if you have Skill Point issues. Upgrading is low-value; focus resources on Skill and Talent.
Major Traces — Always Unlock These First
A2 — “Intellect Unbound”: The Herta gains 1 Inspiration stack at battle start AND after using Ultimate (previously only after Ultimate). This means she enters every fight with her Enhanced Skill immediately available. Also, when calculating Enhanced Skill damage, counts 50% of the Interpretation stacks on the highest-stack non-primary enemy. Transformative for consistent output from turn one.
A4 — “Message From Beyond the Veil”: While another Erudition character is on the team, entire party gains +80% CRIT DMG. This buff applies to all characters — DPS, supports, sustains. Unlocking this trace determines your entire team building strategy and is why The Herta MUST always run with a second Erudition unit.
A6 — “Erudition’s Foresight”: The Herta’s Ice RES PEN increases by 20%. When enemies on the field number 3+, 2, or 1, her Ultimate DMG multiplier increases by 140%, 250%, or 400% respectively. Combined with the A2 trace, this makes The Herta a genuine threat even in single-target content at maximum Interpretation stacks.
Best Team Compositions
❄️ Dual Erudition Core — Max Output
The absolute benchmark team composition for The Herta in HSR 4.0. Anaxa is the premier Erudition partner — his Skill bounces hit all enemies twice per turn, generating a massive amount of Interpretation stacks and Energy for The Herta simultaneously. The dual-Erudition A4 bonus grants the entire team +80% CRIT DMG passively, and Anaxa’s own Imperative Hiatus trace adds a further +50% team-wide DMG boost. Combined, these buffs rival having multiple Harmony supports without sacrificing DPS.
Tribbie is the ideal buffer: her RES PEN and Damage Taken% buffs are multiplicative with The Herta’s already-high self-buffs, making each point of her buff more effective here than most characters. Her follow-up attacks also further generate Interpretation stacks and Energy. Permansor is the go-to sustain — his Souldragon summon has high SPD and AoE attacks that contribute to stack generation and Energy, while his shields scale with ATK (synergizing with buff stacking) and his Ultimate provides AoE damage that further fills The Herta’s energy gauge.
Equip The Herta with Izumo Gensei Planar Ornaments for the unconditional same-path CRIT Rate bonus. This team dominates Pure Fiction, Memory of Chaos, and Apocalyptic Shadow.
❄️ Herta + Anaxa + RMC + Sustain
A highly competitive variant replacing Tribbie with Remembrance Trailblazer (RTB). RTB’s Memosprite companion attacks enemies independently each turn — contributing to Interpretation stacks and Energy generation without using The Herta’s or Anaxa’s turns. RTB’s Ultimate also provides True DMG and action advance, speeding up The Herta’s rotation.
The key advantage here is the CRIT DMG buff RTB provides to the team and the undiluted DMG multiplier from their Memosprite, which doesn’t compete with The Herta’s own damage windows. Huohuo provides healing, ATK buffs, and Energy restoration — particularly valuable for ensuring The Herta can cycle Ultimates without ERR Rope (using ATK% rope instead for higher damage ceiling). Best in content where raw healing over shields is needed.
❄️ The Herta + Jade — Pure Fiction AoE King
Replacing Anaxa with Jade as the Erudition partner creates a different but potent composition. Jade’s Skill grants The Herta +30 Speed via her passive — dramatically increasing The Herta’s turns per cycle and thus her Interpretation stack generation rate. Jade also deals very strong independent follow-up AoE damage in Pure Fiction, making this team competitive in multi-wave content.
The downside vs Anaxa: Jade doesn’t provide Anaxa’s bonus 50% team DMG from Imperative Hiatus, and her single-target is weaker. But in Pure Fiction with five enemies alive, Jade + The Herta + Tribbie is one of the highest raw DPS combinations — Jade’s frequent follow-ups accelerate Interpretation stacks and The Herta’s energy simultaneously. Use Lingsha for healing if element flexibility is needed.
❄️ The Herta + Sunday + Flex
Sunday brings a different approach: instead of Tribbie’s universal buffs, Sunday provides action advance + CRIT DMG for a target ally and can supply energy via his Ultimate (44 energy — equivalent to five ally attacks). He’s especially powerful when The Herta or Anaxa has a summon (Permansor’s Souldragon) active, as Sunday’s skill provides bonus DMG in this scenario.
This composition skews toward Apocalyptic Shadow boss encounters where burst windows matter more than sustained AoE. Sunday’s advance lets The Herta get more Enhanced Skills per boss phase, concentrating massive damage spikes. Pair with Lingsha for SP-neutral sustain. Note: Sunday’s A4 compounds with the team’s 80% CRIT DMG bonus from The Herta’s A4, creating multiplicative CRIT DMG stacking.
❄️ F2P Team — Accessible & Effective
A fully accessible F2P composition. Herta Puppet (4-star) is a free Erudition character that activates The Herta’s A4 +80% CRIT DMG buff. In Pure Fiction with respawning weak enemies, Herta Puppet’s follow-up attack talent triggers frequently, generating substantial Energy for The Herta and piling Interpretation stacks fast. She’s a surprisingly strong Erudition partner for budget players.
Remembrance Trailblazer (completely free) provides True DMG, CRIT DMG buffs, and action advance. Gallagher provides sustain via his efficient Kettle-break healing — his off-turn attacks also contribute to Interpretation stacks. While this team won’t match premium compositions in pure numbers, it clears all endgame content effectively and is a genuine starting point for The Herta players.
Eidolons Guide
| Eidolon | Effect | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| E0 | Full base kit — Interpretation stacking, Enhanced Skill, Ultimate redistribution, A4 team 80% CRIT DMG. Complete and powerful without any Eidolons. E0 with signature Light Cone is the standard investment point. | Strong |
| E1 | When The Herta uses her Enhanced Skill, if enemies have 7+ Interpretation stacks, resets stacks to 15 (instead of 1). Particularly impactful in 1–2 enemy scenarios where stacks normally fall to 1 after the Enhanced Skill. Moderate DPS gain in AoE; notable in single-target. Signature LC S1 generally provides more value than E1 for most players — prioritize S1 first. | Situational |
| E2 | Highly Recommended for Min-Maxers. After The Herta uses her Enhanced Skill, advances her action forward by 35%. This extra turn dramatically increases turns per cycle — roughly 1–2 additional turns in a standard rotation. Also increases SP consumption, which is why S1 signature (SP generation) is almost mandatory at E2. Recommended alongside S1 for competitive speedrun thresholds. | High Value |
| E3 | Skill Level +2 (up to Lv.15) and Talent Level +2 (up to Lv.15). Directly increases The Herta’s primary damage sources. Meaningful DPS increase — roughly 8–12% over E2 — but requires a significant additional pull investment. | Recommended |
| E4 | Erudition-path characters in the team gain +12% SPD. This passive SPD bonus applies to all Erudition teammates (The Herta, Anaxa, Jade, etc.). Reduces the pressure of hitting SPD breakpoints through substats alone. Quality-of-life improvement for speed-tuned team compositions. | Optional |
| E6 | Ultimate Level +2, Ice RES PEN +20% unconditionally, and dramatically increased Ultimate DMG multipliers (140%/250%/400% for 3+/2/1 enemy). At E6, The Herta’s single-target damage rivals dedicated single-target hypercarries while maintaining her AoE prowess. Maximum power — very high cost. | Whale Tier |
❄️ Eidolon Investment Guide
Recommended for most players: E0S1. The signature Light Cone provides near-equal DPS gains to E1 while also solving the SP economy issue — critical for supporting active team skill usage. If you’re investing further, E2S1 is the recommended stopping point for serious players: the action advance dramatically increases turns-per-cycle and is considered The Herta’s best Eidolon by a significant margin. Note: E2 increases SP consumption, so E2 without S1 is not recommended.
How to Play The Herta
Core Rotation
The Herta’s playstyle is deceptively simple in principle but rewards precise timing and team awareness:
- Use Technique before battle to enter combat with all 3 Inspiration stacks immediately — your first Skill is already Enhanced.
- Let Anaxa, Jade, or Herta Puppet attack freely — every hit on any enemy applies Interpretation stacks and generates Energy for The Herta. Higher hit count = faster stack accumulation.
- Use The Herta’s Enhanced Skill “Hear Me Out” on the primary target with the most Interpretation stacks. Use Skill on the target with highest Interpretation count whenever you have Inspiration.
- Save Normal Skill use for turns without Inspiration — or if SP is flush, use it to build stacks on adjacent targets for the next Enhanced Skill.
- Use Ultimate when Energy is full — it redistributes stacks (concentrating on elites/bosses), deals AoE damage, and grants another Inspiration stack. Immediately follow with Enhanced Skill on the highest-stack target.
- Repeat: with E2 the action advance after Enhanced Skill often gives The Herta an immediate second action — use the next Skill or Ultimate depending on Energy.
Interpretation Stack Optimization
- Always aim the Enhanced Skill at the enemy with the most Interpretation stacks — the damage scales directly with this number.
- After Ultimate redistributes stacks, boss/elite enemies receive disproportionately more stacks — this is intentional. Always follow Ultimate with Enhanced Skill targeting the boss.
- The Herta’s A2 trace counts 50% of adjacent enemy stacks when calculating Enhanced Skill damage — this means positioning your skill target near high-stack enemies increases damage even if they aren’t the primary target.
- In Pure Fiction with 5 enemies, stacks accumulate extremely fast — The Herta can hit max Interpretation within 1–2 rotations, at which point every Enhanced Skill nukes the field.
Speed Tuning Recommendations
Optimal SPD setup depends on your team’s turn order:
- 134 SPD minimum — ensures The Herta gets a reasonable number of turns. Never go below this threshold.
- In Anaxa teams without E2: tune The Herta to match or slightly exceed Anaxa’s SPD — both characters benefit from high individual turn counts.
- With E2: action advance effectively gives The Herta bonus turns after every Enhanced Skill. You can invest in SPD via SPD boots + substats to hit 160 SPD for a full extra cycle per rotation.
- With Jade: Jade’s Skill provides The Herta +30 SPD — account for this in your SPD tuning to avoid over-investing in SPD substats when Jade is on the team.
❄️ Pro Tip: Energy Rope vs ATK% Rope
Use an ERR (Energy Recharge Rate) Rope if you’re not running heavy energy supports like Sunday or Huohuo — it ensures The Herta can cycle Ultimates every 2 turns. Switch to an ATK% Rope when Sunday, Huohuo, or RTB are providing ample energy, as the additional energy becomes redundant and ATK% delivers more damage per turn. The Herta’s signature Light Cone removes one Skill Point per Ultimate — use this flexibility to run ATK% rope more often with S1 equipped.
Character Comparisons
The Herta vs Other SS Tier DPS
vs Anaxa (Wind Erudition): Not a competition — they are best-in-slot partners for each other, not alternatives. Anaxa acts as The Herta’s premier Erudition sub-DPS, generating stacks, energy, and the 50% team DMG bonus that amplifies The Herta’s output. If choosing only one: The Herta as main DPS with Jade is still strong; Anaxa hypercarry with Jade is also strong — but together they’re far greater than either alone.
vs Castorice (Ice Erudition): Castorice brings HP-scaling Remembrance synergy and powerful burst in Pure Fiction. The Herta brings consistent multi-hit AoE and the remarkable A4 team CRIT DMG buff. For Pure Fiction, both clear comfortably — The Herta with Anaxa generally edges out in sheer ceiling. For Memory of Chaos, the difference is very content-dependent. They serve different team compositions and don’t overlap much in teammates.
vs Phainon (Physical Destruction): Phainon is a single-target hypercarry who enters a solo Territory during his Ultimate. The Herta is the queen of AoE — massively superior in Pure Fiction and multi-target Memory of Chaos. Phainon wins in Apocalyptic Shadow single-boss scenarios. Complementary roles, not interchangeable. Having both covers all endgame modes optimally.
vs Feixiao (Wind Hunt): Feixiao is a follow-up attack hypercarry — excellent single-target, competitive AoE. The Herta surpasses Feixiao specifically in Pure Fiction where her Interpretation mechanics scale to absurd numbers. Feixiao requires allies with follow-up attacks for her Ultimate; The Herta requires multi-hit AoE allies. Very different team requirements, both remain powerful in their niches.
Should You Pull The Herta?
✅ Pull If:
- You want the best AoE DPS for Pure Fiction — she effectively defines this game mode in HSR 4.0
- You already own or plan to pull Anaxa — their synergy is the strongest dual-DPS combination in the current meta
- You have or can build strong multi-hit Erudition allies (Anaxa, Jade, Herta Puppet) to stack Interpretation rapidly
- You have Tribbie, Sunday, Remembrance Trailblazer, or Huohuo as supports — they synergize exceptionally with her kit
- You want a character who passively buffs the entire team with +80% CRIT DMG just by existing with an Erudition partner
- You’re looking for a high-value DPS that remains competitive without her signature Light Cone (Geniuses’ Repose is craftable)
- You want consistent performance across all three endgame modes, not just one
⚠️ Consider Skipping If:
- You already own multiple strong AoE DPS units (Castorice + Jade, or Rappa for break content) and have Pure Fiction covered
- You don’t have and can’t pull a second Erudition unit — without her A4 CRIT DMG bonus, she loses significant value
- You prefer single-target boss specialists and your team already excels in Apocalyptic Shadow
- You’re saving Stellar Jade for an upcoming limited Harmony support that would benefit all your existing DPS
- This is her third or later rerun and you’ve already built sufficient endgame teams
Final Verdict: The Herta is one of the most powerful, enduring, and team-enabling DPS characters in Honkai: Star Rail. Even into HSR 4.0 — multiple versions after her initial release — she continues to anchor top-tier teams and push the highest Pure Fiction scores. Her A4 team CRIT DMG buff is uniquely impactful: it makes every ally on her team more powerful simply by running another Erudition character. If you need AoE power, the Herta + Anaxa dual core is the gold standard of the current meta. Easily SS Tier — a foundational investment for any serious account.
