After the cutscene, follow Kidd around the island as he leads you to a lookout point. You’ll spot a group of soldiers. Sneak past them — use the sugarcane fields as cover and stay in the stalking zones. On the other side you’ll find Beckford’s agent inspecting sugar crates.
Once you have him in your sights, tail him carefully. Use the treeline and bushes to stay hidden. He’ll lead you through the plantation, stopping at a guard tower and near an alarm bell — watch the snipers in the towers when moving between cover. You can also climb up to the tree platform using the plank marked with white paint and use the Rope Dart to hang guards from branches as you clear a path. How to Get to Cat Island
Once you have the manifest, sail southeast from Andreas Island to Cat Island. The journey is straightforward — follow the quest marker. As you approach, the Jackdaw will automatically slow, then dock and jump off to begin the plantation section. This is where the warehouse key hunt actually starts.
Where Is the Warehouse Key on Cat Island?
The warehouse is located just east of the dock on Cat Island, but the key isn’t anywhere near it when you first arrive. The key is on the southern side of the plantation, held by Mister Beckford himself — the plantation owner.
Here’s the fastest way to find it:
Step 1 — Eavesdrop Near the Warehouse
Sneak close to the warehouse and listen to the two soldiers outside talking. Their conversation reveals that Mister Beckford has the warehouse key. The quest marker then updates and points you toward Beckford’s location. Some players also hear Beckford’s agent demand the key from a guard during this section — the guard wearing a wig and carrying a lantern is the visual giveaway that he’s the important target.
Step 2 — Find Beckford at His Residence
Follow the updated quest marker to Beckford’s residence in the southern part of Cat Island. He’s entertaining guests when you arrive. Cat Island is heavily guarded with British soldiers throughout, so stay in the sugarcane fields and use the stalking zones to move. There are alarm bells on this island — unlike Torres’ estate — so getting spotted by too many guards at once can escalate into a full alert.
Use Eagle Vision constantly to mark guards and track Beckford’s position. Step 3 — Get the Key from Beckford
Once you’ve located Beckford, you have two options:
- Stealth approach: If Beckford walks away from his guests, follow him and pickpocket him to lift the key without a fight. This is the cleanest option and keeps the alarm from going off.
- Combat approach: If you can’t get a clean pickpocket window, get onto the roof above and perform a double assassination on Beckford and a nearby guest simultaneously. After clearing the remaining guards, loot the key from Beckford’s body.
Either method works fine. The pickpocket route is more satisfying and keeps the area quieter, but if you’ve already been spotted or things have gone loud, just fight through, take Beckford down, and loot him. Once you have the key, the quest marker updates and points you back to the warehouse.
How to Open the Warehouse and Complete the Quest
Head back north to the warehouse east of the dock. A group of soldiers is guarding the entrance — clear them all out before you interact with the door. Once they’re down, interact with the warehouse door to use the key and unlock it. A cutscene plays of Edward and his crew raiding the crates inside. When it ends, return to the Jackdaw to wrap up the mission. The Proper Defenses quest becomes available immediately after.

- Sugarcane fields and bushes are your main cover on the approach. Stick to them when moving between positions.
- Use the Rope Dart on guards under tree branches to silently remove them from patrol routes without alerting anyone nearby.
- The visibility meter in the top-right corner of the HUD shows how close you are to detection. Slow down and wait it out if it starts filling up.
