- TL;DR: There are two ways to repair gear in The Witcher 3 Remastered — visit a Blacksmith or Armorer, or use Repair Kits from your inventory.
- Blacksmiths handle weapons. Armorers handle armor. Neither can do both.
- Repair Kits come in three tiers: Amateur (15%), Journeyman (40%), and Master (90%).
- Weapon and Armor Repair Kits are separate items — a weapon kit will not fix armor and vice versa.
- Low durability means less damage dealt and less protection from incoming hits.
- The Remastered version adds a new Unlimited Item Durability accessibility option so you never need to repair at all.
- The new Gear Reforging feature lets master craftsmen change how your gear looks — this is separate from repair and does not affect durability.
Gear durability is a real mechanic in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Remastered. Ignore it long enough and Geralt’s weapons will deal noticeably less damage while his armor offers weaker protection. Staying on top of repairs keeps you at full combat strength. This guide covers every method to repair weapons and armor, where to find the right craftsmen, how repair kits work, and what is new in the Remastered version.
Why Gear Durability Matters in The Witcher 3 Remastered
Every time Geralt swings his sword, the weapon loses a small amount of durability. Every time he takes a hit, his armor degrades. This happens continuously during combat.
As durability drops, so does performance. A damaged weapon deals less damage with every swing. Damaged armor provides weaker protection against enemy attacks. The reduction grows more noticeable the lower durability gets. Once a weapon drops below around 50% durability, a red warning icon appears on your HUD. That is the game telling you it is time to find a craftsman or use a kit.
Weapons and armor can still be used at 0% durability — they do not break or disappear in the base game. But the stat penalties at that point are significant enough that fights become much harder than they need to be. Keeping gear repaired above 50% at all times is the smart approach.
Items stored in your inventory and not currently equipped do not lose durability. Only gear Geralt is wearing or actively using degrades.
How to Repair Weapons and Armor at a Craftsman
The most reliable and complete repair method is visiting a Blacksmith or Armorer. These NPCs are available across all regions of the game and can restore your gear to full durability for a small fee in Crowns.
Blacksmiths — Repair Weapons
Blacksmiths repair swords, crossbows, and other weapons. Look for the anvil icon on your map. These are common in towns and cities across Velen, Novigrad, Skellige, and Toussaint. The armorer at Crow’s Perch in Velen is one of the first you will encounter and is easy to access early in the game.
Here is how to use a Blacksmith to repair weapons:
- Approach the Blacksmith and start a conversation.
- Select “Let’s talk about your services” or the crafting option, depending on the dialogue.
- Scroll or tab across to the Repair section of the crafting menu.
- You will see a list of your damaged weapons with their current durability percentage.
- Select individual weapons to repair them one at a time, or use the Repair All option if available.
- Confirm and pay the Crown cost. The weapon returns to full durability.
Armorers — Repair Armor
Armorers are specialists in protective gear. They repair chest armor, gauntlets, trousers, and boots — everything Geralt wears. Look for the armor icon on your map. The process is identical to using a Blacksmith, but through an Armorer NPC instead.
A Blacksmith cannot repair armor and an Armorer cannot repair weapons. You need the right craftsman for each type of gear.
Repair Cost
The Crown cost of repairs scales with the quality and tier of the item. Basic gear costs very little to repair. High-tier Witcher gear can be slightly more expensive. Either way, the costs are low enough that you should always repair whenever you visit a settlement. Do not let gear degrade over several quests trying to save Crowns — the combat penalty is not worth it.

How to Repair Weapons and Armor Using Repair Kits
Repair Kits are portable consumable items you can use anywhere — in the middle of the wilderness, right before a boss fight, or during exploration without needing to travel back to a craftsman. They are one of the most useful items to keep stocked in your inventory.
There are two separate types of repair kits:
- Weapon Repair Kits — for swords and other weapons only
- Armor Repair Kits — for chest pieces, gloves, boots, and trousers only
You cannot use a Weapon Repair Kit on armor or an Armor Repair Kit on a weapon. They are always separate. Make sure you carry both types if you want full field repair capability.
How to Use a Repair Kit
- Open your inventory.
- Find the Repair Kit in your consumables or tools.
- On PC: Right-click the kit and select the item you want to repair, or drag the kit icon directly onto the damaged weapon or armor piece.
- On PS5: Highlight the kit and press the confirm button, then choose the item to repair.
- On Xbox and Switch 2: Same as PS5 — select the kit and confirm, then pick the item.
The kit is consumed after use and the selected item’s durability increases by the kit’s repair percentage.
All Repair Kit Tiers — Weapon and Armor
Each type of repair kit comes in three tiers. The tier determines how much durability is restored. Higher tiers cost more to buy or require rarer crafting materials.
Weapon Repair Kits
| Repair Kit | Durability Restored | Buy Price | Crafting Ingredients |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amateur’s Weapon Repair Kit | +15% | ~20 Crowns | Elven Whetstone x1, Oil x1, Leather Straps x1 |
| Journeyman’s Weapon Repair Kit | +40% | ~30 Crowns | Dwarven Whetstone x1, Bottled Water x1, Leather Scraps x1 |
| Master’s Weapon Repair Kit | +90% | ~62 Crowns | Gnomish Whetstone x1, Alchemy Paste x1, Linen x1 |
Armor Repair Kits
| Repair Kit | Durability Restored | Buy Price | Crafting Ingredients |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amateur’s Armor Repair Kit | +15% | ~20 Crowns | Elven Armorer’s Tools x1, Thread x1, Leather Straps x1, Nails x1 |
| Journeyman’s Armor Repair Kit | +40% | ~60 Crowns | Dwarven Armorer’s Tools x1, Thread x3, Linen x1, Leather Straps x2, Steel Plates x1 |
| Master’s Armor Repair Kit | +90% | ~120 Crowns | Gnomish Armorer’s Tools x1, Silk x1, Hardened Leather x1, Wire x1, Steel Plates x2 |
Which tier should you use? In most situations, the Journeyman kit is the best value. It restores 40% durability and costs very little. Master kits are best saved for high-value Witcher gear when you are far from a craftsman and need a near-full restoration. Amateur kits are fine early in the game when you are working with cheaper gear.
Where to Buy Repair Kits in The Witcher 3 Remastered
You do not need to craft repair kits — you can simply buy them. They are sold by a wide range of vendors throughout the game.
- Blacksmiths — sell all three tiers of Weapon Repair Kits. Found in most towns.
- Armorers — sell all three tiers of Armor Repair Kits. Found in towns and fortified locations.
- Merchants and traders — many roadside merchants and village traders stock the Amateur and Journeyman tiers.
- Bram in White Orchard — one of the earliest sellers of Journeyman Weapon Repair Kits, available right at the start of the game.
- Nilfgaardian Army Camp merchants — stock both weapon and armor kits.
In Novigrad, Oxenfurt, and Skellige, most Blacksmiths and Armorers sell Master-tier kits. You may not find them in White Orchard or very early in Velen, but Journeyman kits are widely available from the beginning.
How to Craft Repair Kits in The Witcher 3 Remastered
You can also craft repair kits yourself if you have the right diagrams and materials. Crafting is useful when you are low on Crowns or you want to convert loot materials into useful field supplies.
How to Get Crafting Diagrams
Crafting diagrams for repair kits are sold by the same Blacksmiths and Armorers who sell the kits themselves. Buy the diagram once and you can craft that tier of kit indefinitely as long as you have the ingredients.
To craft a repair kit:
- Find any Blacksmith or Armorer who has the crafting service.
- Open the crafting menu.
- Look under the Tools or Repair Kits category.
- Select the kit you want to craft and confirm.
- The craftsman will produce the kit in exchange for the required ingredients.
Even an Amateur-level craftsman can produce all three tiers of repair kits. You do not need a Master craftsman just to make a repair kit — Master craftsmen are reserved for crafting top-tier gear and, in the Remastered version, the new Reforging service.

New Repair and Durability Features in The Witcher 3 Remastered
The Remastered update released on September 29, 2026 did not change how repair kits or craftsmen work in the core game. But it added two important new features that directly affect how you handle gear durability.
Unlimited Item Durability — Accessibility Option
The Remastered version introduces a new Bard’s Ballad accessibility preset designed for players who want a simpler experience. One of the options within this preset is Unlimited Item Durability. When this is turned on, your gear never degrades. You never need to visit a craftsman for repairs and you never need to carry repair kits.
This option can be enabled in the Accessibility settings menu. It is completely optional and does not affect the rest of the game. It is a good choice for players who want to focus on the story and quests without worrying about gear management.
Gear Reforging — Change Appearance Without Affecting Durability
The Remastered update also adds a brand new Gear Reforging system. This lets you change how your weapons and armor look without changing their stats or durability in any way. Reforging is handled by only two master craftsmen in the game: Yoana (the Armorer in Crow’s Perch who unlocks further into the Bloody Baron questline) and Hattori (the master swordsmith in Novigrad).
To unlock new appearances for Reforging, you need to add new equipment and crafting diagrams to your inventory. Dyes applied from the Blood and Wine expansion will carry over when a piece is Reforged.
Important: Reforging changes appearance only. It does not repair durability. You still need to repair damaged gear through the standard methods. Reforging and repairing are two completely separate services.

Repair Tips to Save Time and Crowns
Always Repair Before a Big Quest
Before starting a main story quest or a difficult Witcher contract, visit a Blacksmith and Armorer to top up durability. Full gear equals full stats. This is especially important before boss fights where every percentage of damage and protection matters.
Carry Master Kits for Emergencies
Keep a few Master-tier Weapon and Armor Repair Kits in your inventory at all times. These restore 90% durability and are invaluable during long dungeon runs or in Skellige where craftsmen can be far between. They are cheap enough that buying a handful whenever you see a Blacksmith is always worth it.
Watch the HUD Warning Icon
When the red hammer icon appears next to a piece of gear on your HUD, your durability has dropped below around 50%. Do not ignore this. The damage and defense penalties get worse the lower you go. As a rule of thumb, repair anything that goes below 50%.
Armor Degrades Faster Than Weapons
Your armor takes hits from every enemy attack. In most fights, armor will lose durability faster than your weapons. Prioritize keeping chest armor, boots, gloves, and trousers repaired. A fully damaged armor set leaves Geralt far more vulnerable than a slightly worn weapon.
Sell Junk, Not Repair Kits
When your inventory is full, sell looted monster parts, low-tier weapons, and excess crafting materials before selling repair kits. Kits are more useful than almost anything you pick up in the field.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I repair weapons and armor at the same craftsman?
No. Blacksmiths repair weapons only. Armorers repair armor only. You need to visit both to fully service all of Geralt’s gear. Most towns have both types nearby, so this is rarely an issue.
Do repair kits fully restore durability?
No repair kit restores 100%. The best is the Master tier, which restores 90%. For a full restore, visit a Blacksmith or Armorer and use the Repair All option. That will bring your gear to 100% for a small Crown fee.
Can I use a Weapon Repair Kit on armor?
No. Weapon Repair Kits only work on weapons. Armor Repair Kits only work on armor. They are completely separate consumables. Always carry both types.
Does gear durability affect Witcher gear differently?
No, the durability system is the same for all gear including Witcher gear sets. However, Witcher gear tends to be your best equipment and you rely on it for longer periods, so it is especially important to keep it repaired. Neglecting a Cat School or Wolf School set that you have invested in upgrading is a costly mistake.
What happens if gear reaches 0% durability in The Witcher 3 Remastered?
In the base game, gear does not break or disappear at 0% durability. It remains in your inventory and can still be used. However, the stat penalties at 0% are at their worst — weapons deal significantly less damage and armor provides weakened protection. It is always better to repair before reaching 0%. The Remastered version does not change this behavior, but the Unlimited Item Durability accessibility option lets you turn off degradation entirely if you prefer.
Is the Unlimited Durability option available on all platforms?
Yes. The Bard’s Ballad accessibility preset and its Unlimited Item Durability option are available on all platforms where The Witcher 3 Remastered launched — PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Does Reforging count as repairing gear in The Witcher 3 Remastered?
No. Reforging is a completely separate service from repair. Reforging only changes the visual appearance of your gear. It does not restore durability. If your gear is damaged, you still need to repair it at a Blacksmith or Armorer, or use a Repair Kit. Reforging and repairing are independent of each other.
Where is the best place to repair gear early in the game?
In White Orchard, the Blacksmith and Armorer near the first village can handle basic repairs. Once you reach Velen, the craftsmen at the Nilfgaardian Army Group ‘Center’ Camp are easy to access early on. Crow’s Perch also has an Armorer who is useful throughout the early and mid game. Always repair at these locations before heading into unfamiliar territory.
