- TL;DR: Fast travel in The Witcher 3 Remastered works through Signposts scattered across the world map.
- Walk up to any signpost, interact with it, and pick your destination.
- You must discover a signpost first before you can fast travel to it.
- At sea, get in a boat and use harbor anchors on the map to fast travel by water.
- You cannot fast travel while in combat or during certain quest sequences.
- There are 171+ signposts across all regions including the DLC areas.
- The Remastered version keeps the same fast travel system but adds visual improvements and loading speed upgrades.
The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Remastered launched on September 29, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The world is massive. Without fast travel, moving between quests would take hours. This guide breaks down everything you need to know about fast travel — from signposts to sea travel to common issues and fixes.
How Fast Travel Works in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Remastered
Fast travel in The Witcher 3 Remastered does not work like most open world games. You cannot just open the map and click anywhere to teleport. Instead, the game uses a Signpost system.
Signposts are wooden signs planted at roadsides, town entrances, and key locations across the world. You need to physically walk or ride up to one and interact with it. Only then can you choose where to go.
Think of it as a network. Every signpost you discover becomes a node. You can travel from any node to any other node you have already found.
How to Use a Signpost to Fast Travel
Here are the exact steps to fast travel using a signpost:
- Walk or ride Roach to a nearby signpost. They appear as green sign icons on your map.
- Stand close to the signpost and interact with it. On PS5 press Square, on Xbox press X, on Switch 2 press Y, and on PC press E by default.
- The regional map will open automatically.
- Select any green signpost icon on the map that you have already discovered.
- Confirm your selection and wait through the loading screen.
That’s it. Geralt will appear at your chosen destination ready to continue his journey.
How to Discover New Signposts
You can only fast travel to signposts you have already found. Discovery is simple. You just need to get physically close to a signpost in the game world. You do not even need to interact with it. Walking or riding past it is enough to add it to your fast travel network.
Once discovered, the signpost shows up permanently on your map with a green icon. A notification will also appear on screen confirming the discovery.
Pro tip: Always stay on the roads when exploring. Most signposts are placed along roads and at village entrances. If you stick to the path, you will naturally pick up signposts as you move between quests. This saves a lot of backtracking later.

How to Fast Travel Between Regions
The Witcher 3 Remastered has six main regions: White Orchard, Velen, Novigrad, Skellige, Kaer Morhen, and Toussaint (Toussaint is available with the Blood and Wine DLC). Each region has its own sub-map.
When you open the map after interacting with a signpost, you will first see the regional map. To travel to a different region, you need to zoom out to the World Map.
- On PS5: Press Triangle to switch to the World Map.
- On Xbox: Press Y to switch to the World Map.
- On Switch 2: Press X to switch to the World Map.
- On PC: Scroll out with the mouse wheel or press Space.
Once on the World Map, click or select any discovered signpost in another region. Cross-region travel takes slightly longer to load because the game is loading a new area entirely.
How to Fast Travel by Sea in The Witcher 3 Remastered
Sea travel works differently from land travel. You do not need a signpost. You need a harbor.
Harbors appear on your map as anchor icons instead of the usual green signpost icons. Here is how to use them:
- Find and board a boat.
- Take the helm — actually sit at the wheel to steer. Simply standing in the boat is not enough.
- Make sure you are out of combat.
- Open the map while steering the boat.
- Select any green anchor icon you have already discovered.
- Confirm and Geralt will arrive at the destination harbor, still on the boat.
Sea fast travel is especially useful in Skellige, which is made up of scattered islands. Without harbor fast travel, sailing between islands becomes very slow.
Bonus tip: If you sail to the very edge of the explorable sea area, the map will open automatically. From there you can fast travel to any discovered harbor or signpost, even on land.
In The Witcher 3 Remastered, one of the new accessibility options is Faster Boats, which makes sailing quicker when you are not using fast travel. This makes water exploration much less frustrating between harbors. Learn more about the new Roach and horse changes in our Witcher 3 Remastered Roach fixes and horse riding changes guide.
How Many Signposts Are There in The Witcher 3 Remastered?
Across the base game and all expansions, there are over 171 confirmed signposts in The Witcher 3 Remastered. The exact count varies slightly depending on which sources you check, because some databases count legacy markers and expansion markers differently.
Here is a rough breakdown by region:
- White Orchard: 10 signposts
- Velen and Novigrad: Around 100 signposts combined (including Oxenfurt and outskirts)
- Skellige: Around 55 signposts
- Kaer Morhen: 5 signposts
- Toussaint (Blood and Wine): Additional signposts in the Beauclair area
- Hearts of Stone region: Around 13 additional signposts
The Remastered update did not add or remove any signposts. All existing 171 base-game and expansion signposts remain exactly as they were. The only notable signpost addition came in the previous next-gen update, which added the Castle Village signpost inside Crow’s Perch (the Bloody Baron’s castle). That one unlocks after you complete the Bloody Baron questline.

Fast Travel Tips to Save Time in The Witcher 3 Remastered
Stick to the Roads Early On
Most signposts are placed along main roads and near settlement entrances. If you follow roads instead of cutting through fields and forests, you will discover signposts naturally as part of your journey. This means less backtracking later when you need to reach a specific area fast.
Discover Signposts in New Areas Before Exploring
Whenever you enter a new town or region for a quest, find the signpost first before doing anything else. This gives you a fast return point so you do not have to ride all the way back if something goes wrong.
Use Roach on the Road Between Signposts
Roach moves faster on roads than on rough terrain. If the next signpost is nearby, it is often quicker to ride there than to go back to a previous signpost just to fast travel forward. Call Roach with the dedicated button and hold the gallop button on a clear road.
Fast Travel Does Not Work in Combat
This is one of the most common frustrations. If you are in an active fight, the fast travel option will be locked. You must defeat the enemies first, or run far enough away that combat disengages. Then you can interact with a nearby signpost.
Unlock the Globetrotter Achievement
If you want to earn the Globetrotter achievement or trophy, you need to discover at least 100 signposts. You do not need all 171+. Just make a habit of stopping at every signpost you see during normal play and you should hit 100 without any dedicated grinding.

How Fast Travel Changed in The Witcher 3 Remastered
The core fast travel system itself has not changed in the Remastered version. Signposts work the same way they always have. What has changed is everything around it:
- Faster loading times on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 make fast travel feel almost instant compared to older platforms.
- Faster Boats accessibility option reduces travel time between harbors when not using fast travel.
- Improved movement and traversal mean that getting to your nearest signpost from wherever you are feels smoother.
- Bug fix: A quest bug related to fast traveling out of Toussaint during a specific Wine is Sacred objective was patched in the Remastered launch update.
The Remastered update is a free upgrade for existing owners. For a full breakdown of what changed, visit our Witcher 3 Remastered Patch 5.0 all changes explained. Also see the official Witcher 3 site and the Nintendo Switch 2 product page for platform-specific information.

How to Fix Fast Travel Not Working in The Witcher 3 Remastered
Fast Travel Is Blocked During Combat
If you are in active combat, the signpost will not let you fast travel. The option will be locked or grayed out. Kill or escape from all enemies nearby. Wait a few seconds until the combat music stops and the combat state clears. Then try the signpost again.
Signposts Not Showing on the Map
This is usually a map filter issue, not a bug. Open your map and check the filter settings in the corner. If the Signpost filter is turned off, discovered signposts will not appear on the map. Switch the filter to All or General and the green icons will reappear. You can then select them normally to fast travel.
Fast Travel Blocked During a Quest
Some quests in The Witcher 3 lock you into a specific area and disable fast travel temporarily. This is intentional design. If you see a message saying fast travel is unavailable, check your active quest objectives. You usually need to complete or progress the current objective before fast travel re-enables. Do not try to use mods to force fast travel during quests, as this can corrupt your save.
Loading Screen Gets Stuck
If your loading screen seems stuck after selecting a fast travel destination, try waiting a full minute before doing anything. If it stays frozen, exit to the main menu and reload your last autosave. Make sure your game is updated to the latest Remastered patch. For PC performance, check out our Witcher 3 Remastered path tracing PC settings guide and Witcher 3 Remastered PC system requirements.
Can You Fast Travel from Anywhere in The Witcher 3 Remastered?
By default, no. You always need to be physically at a signpost to fast travel. You cannot just open the map from the middle of a forest and teleport wherever you want.
However, on PC, a popular mod called Fast Travel from Anywhere (available for the Next Gen version) removes this restriction. With the mod active, you can open the map from any location and select any discovered signpost. This is useful for long exploration sessions where signposts are far apart.
If you prefer to avoid mods, you can also use the debug console command on PC. Typing AllowFT(1) into the developer console enables fast travel from anywhere without a signpost. Type AllowFT(0) to turn it back to normal. Be careful using this during active quests, as it can sometimes cause issues with scripted sequences.
There is also a set of specific goto commands you can type to jump directly to a region. For example, typing gotoKaerMorhen in the console teleports you directly to the witcher fortress entrance.
Fast Travel and the DLC Areas
Hearts of Stone
The Hearts of Stone expansion adds new areas northeast of Oxenfurt on the main Novigrad map. There are around 13 additional signposts here. These work exactly like standard signposts and integrate into your existing fast travel network without any extra steps.
Blood and Wine — Toussaint
The Blood and Wine expansion takes place in Toussaint, a region south of Velen. Toussaint has its own set of signposts and is treated as a separate region on the World Map. You fast travel there the same way you would travel to Skellige — zoom out to the World Map, find the Toussaint region, and select a discovered signpost.
Toussaint is large and has a lot to explore. Make sure to collect signposts as you explore Beauclair and the surrounding countryside to save time on the many side quests in the expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to interact with a signpost or just walk near it?
You only need to walk or ride near a signpost to discover it. But to actually use fast travel, you do need to physically interact with a discovered signpost. Just walking past it adds it to your map — it does not trigger the fast travel menu.
Why can’t I fast travel even though I’m at a signpost?
The two most common reasons are: you are in combat, or your map filter is hiding signpost icons. Exit combat first and wait for the combat state to clear. Then check your map filters and make sure signposts are set to visible.
Can I fast travel while on Roach?
No. You have to dismount from Roach before you can interact with a signpost. There is a mod on PC that removes this requirement, but in the base game you must be on foot to use a signpost.
Does fast travel cost anything in The Witcher 3 Remastered?
No. Fast travel is completely free. There is no currency cost, stamina cost, or item requirement. You just need to have discovered the destination signpost first.
How do I fast travel to Kaer Morhen?
Kaer Morhen is a story-gated region. You cannot fast travel there until it is unlocked during the main quest. Once it is accessible, it appears on the World Map and you can fast travel there like any other region. There are 5 signposts in the valley.
Is fast travel the same on Nintendo Switch 2?
Yes. The fast travel system works identically on Nintendo Switch 2. The main difference is loading times, which are very fast on Switch 2 thanks to the hardware. The control input for interacting with signposts on Switch 2 is the Y button.
Does discovering all signposts unlock anything?
You earn the Globetrotter achievement or trophy for discovering at least 100 fast travel signposts. You do not need to find all 171+, just 100. However, finding all signposts makes completing every quest much easier since you will always have a fast travel point nearby wherever you need to go.
Can I fast travel during the final mission?
Fast travel is disabled during specific quest sequences, including some late-game and ending missions. This is a scripted design choice to keep you focused on the story. If fast travel is blocked, check your current quest objective and progress the story before trying again.
