Some characters in Wuthering Waves arrive with a lot of noise. Phrolova arrived with a funeral march and a wave of her baton.
She’s been in the game’s lore since the very beginning — the silent, somber Overseer of the Fractsidus who summoned Tacet Discords like an orchestra conductor pulling music from thin air. When she finally became playable in Version 2.5, she didn’t disappoint. And as of Version 3.2 in April 2026, she still sits firmly in SS Tier as one of the best Havoc DPS units in the entire game.
If you’ve been holding off or missed her previous banners, this guide covers everything you need to know to build her correctly and understand exactly why the community rates her so highly.

Who Is Phrolova? — Lore & Background
Phrolova is one of the most narratively rich characters in Wuthering Waves and one of the few who was heavily featured in the game’s story long before becoming playable. She appeared in the initial trailers playing an instrument while summoning an army of Tacet Discords — and that image set the tone for everything about her.
She is a Havoc Mutant Resonator — a description that already signals she’s not like other Resonators. Her forte allows her to manipulate and transfigure the frequencies of humans, Echoes, and Tacet Discords alike. Her awakening as a Resonator coincided with her own death, granting her the ability to shape and alter frequencies at a fundamental level. She is described as ageless as a result, her Tacet Discord mutation rendering her beyond ordinary mortality.
The story behind how she ended up with the Fractsidus is one of grief and betrayal. A life that began with music — she was a violinist — was hollowed out by loss until she found in the Fractsidus a path toward reclaiming a past from which she was the sole survivor. She served as an Overseer and eventually completed one final task for the Grand Architect before leaving to find her own way. As of the current story, she walks a path between allegiance and independence, still mourning, still conducting.
Her companion Hecate — the Tacet Discord she summons — is described as a three-faced Witch of the Underworld from the Lost Beyond, a Sonoro Sphere where all decaying frequencies converge. The mythology running through her design is deliberate and layered. The lycoris flowers woven into her aesthetic are a symbol of death and the afterlife in East Asian tradition. The name Hecate comes from Greek mythology, associated with magic, witchcraft, and crossroads. Everything about her visual and narrative identity points in the same direction: she exists at the boundary between life and death, and she has made her peace with that.
In combat, she’s exactly as cinematic as that backstory suggests.

Phrolova’s Role in the Meta
Phrolova is the best Havoc DPS in the game when properly invested — particularly with her signature weapon. Her kit is built around summoning Hecate and keeping her active and attacking as much as possible, both on and off the field.
What makes her SS Tier as of Version 3.2:
- She is the first character in Wuthering Waves with zero Resonance Energy cost on her Liberation — giving teams more flexibility in energy management
- Her off-field damage through Hecate continues even when she’s not the active Resonator, essentially giving you free damage on top of your main on-field character’s output
- She excels in Whimpering Wastes specifically — her AoE grouping, high wave-clearing potential, and sustained off-field DPS make her one of the top performers in multi-wave content
- Phrolova’s Resonance Skill party comp grows stronger with each new wave in Whimpering Wastes as stacking buffs compound over time
- She has strong crowd control through stagger and grouping effects on her Resonance Skill abilities
The honest caveat: she is a high-investment character. Her team compositions are somewhat specialized — she really wants characters who cast Echo Skills frequently to maximize Hecate’s Enhanced Attack procs. She also drops off significantly without her signature weapon compared to how she performs with it. But when properly built and paired, she is absolutely one of the top DPS units in the game.
Phrolova’s Skills Breakdown
Phrolova’s gameplay is built around her Forte Circuit — a musical note system that tracks Volatile Notes — and her Liberation which doesn’t cost Resonance Energy and instead unlocks the Maestro state where Hecate fights for her. It’s one of the more mechanically interesting kits in the game.
Basic Attack — Movement of Life and Death
Phrolova performs up to 3 consecutive Havoc attacks. The third hit is the key one — it throws Hecate outward in a spinning motion that has a strong enemy grouping effect. Landing this third hit enters her into the Reincarnate state and also unlocks both the Enhanced Basic Attack and Enhanced Resonance Skill. When Hecate hits an enemy during the third Basic Attack, Phrolova gains a red Volatile Note.
One important animation tip: the third Basic Attack animation is quite long and has no interruption resistance. Rather than waiting for the full animation to complete, you can use a Dodge to cancel the animation once the note is gained, then immediately chain into the Enhanced Basic Attack. This is one of the most important mechanical habits to develop with her.
Resonance Skill — Notes Building System
Phrolova’s Resonance Skill jumps backward and summons Hecate, which pulls surrounding enemies toward her. This gives Phrolova a blue Volatile Note and also unlocks the Enhanced Basic Attack and Enhanced Resonance Skill. The Resonance Skill animation is much faster than Basic Attack Stage 3, so dodge-canceling is not needed here.
The two Enhanced derivatives (Enhanced Basic Attack and Enhanced Resonance Skill) each produce different-colored notes and have different crowd control properties:
- Enhanced Basic Attack (Red Note): Higher personal damage, dash-forward option, flower burst pattern — best against single bosses
- Enhanced Resonance Skill (Blue Note): Better crowd control, pulls multiple enemies — best in Whimpering Wastes against groups
Choosing which Enhanced derivative to use should be based on the encounter. Boss fights favor String (Enhanced Basic Attack). Wave-based content favors Wind (Enhanced Resonance Skill) for better grouping.
Forte Circuit — Scarlet Coda (The Trigger)
Phrolova’s Forte Circuit tracks Volatile Notes — she collects them from Basic Attacks, Skills, and their Enhanced derivatives. Every 25 seconds she enters the Compose state. When she has 6 Volatile Notes, is in the Compose state, and is not in the Resolving Chord state, her Heavy Attack is replaced by Scarlet Coda.
Scarlet Coda is the key ability in her kit. It deals Havoc damage, stagnates and pulls nearby targets, and — critically — is counted as casting an Echo Skill. Each stack of Aftersound (built from Volatile Notes) increases Scarlet Coda’s damage multiplier. After casting it, Phrolova enters the Resolving Chord state, which is when her Liberation becomes available.
Resonance Liberation — Waltz of Forsaken Depths (The Maestro State)
This is what makes Phrolova unique. Her Liberation has zero Resonance Energy cost — it simply requires her to be in the Resolving Chord state. Casting it ends Resolving Chord and sends Phrolova into the Maestro state for 24 seconds.
During Maestro state:
- Phrolova gains a 120% ATK increase
- She floats in the air and commands Hecate to fight
- Hecate shares Phrolova’s stats and statuses
- Damage dealt by Hecate is considered Phrolova’s damage
- If Phrolova is NOT the active Resonator, targets take 40% more damage from Hecate and Phrolova
- If Phrolova IS the active Resonator, she gains 60% Havoc DMG Bonus
This is the core of her off-field playstyle. Once Maestro is active, you swap to your other characters and let Hecate continue attacking while the rest of your team does their rotations. Every time a Resonator on your team casts an Echo Skill during Maestro, Hecate triggers an Enhanced Attack — and this is why Echo Skill-heavy teammates like Cantarella and Qiuyuan are so valuable in her compositions.
Intro & Outro Skills
- Intro Skill: Deals Havoc damage and sends Phrolova into Reincarnate state, letting her immediately chain into Enhanced attacks when she swaps in
- Outro Skill: Provides the incoming Resonator with 20% Havoc DMG Amplification and 25% Heavy Attack DMG Amplification — great for passing buffs to Havoc carries like Danjin or Roccia
Best Weapons for Phrolova
| Rank | Weapon | Type | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Lethean Elegy (Signature) | 5-Star Rectifier | The only Rectifier providing both Echo Skill DMG Amplification and Resonance Skill DMG while ignoring DEF — uniquely powerful and purpose-built for her |
| 2nd | Stringmaster | 5-Star Rectifier | Strong ATK and Resonance Skill DMG bonuses — best non-signature option |
| 3rd | Cosmic Ripples | 5-Star Rectifier | Good ATK buffs for Phrolova generally |
| 4th | Augment | 5-Star Rectifier | Solid generalist ATK buff alternative |
The gap between Lethean Elegy and the alternatives is significant for Phrolova specifically. She is one of the characters where the signature weapon genuinely matters — her performance drops off more notably without it compared to characters like Mornye or Lynae who are strong with standard 5-star alternatives. If you’re planning to invest heavily in her, budgeting for the signature is worth considering.
Also important: watch your Crit Rate when equipping Lethean Elegy. Both the signature and the Dream of the Lost Echo set provide Crit Rate — stacking past 100% is wasted stat. Cap it at 100% and overflow into Crit DMG instead.
Best Echo Sets for Phrolova
| Priority | Echo Set | Pieces | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | Dream of the Lost + Havoc Eclipse | 3-piece + 2-piece | Best overall — unconditional Crit Rate and Echo Skill DMG from Dream of the Lost, Havoc DMG Bonus from Eclipse |
| #2 | Dream of the Lost + Midnight Veil | 3-piece + 2-piece | Alternative for the 2-piece bonus — also provides Havoc DMG Bonus |
| #3 | Lingering Tunes + Dream of the Lost | 3-piece + 2-piece | Weaker alternative — ATK bonus from Lingering Tunes is less valuable than Havoc DMG Bonus |
| Early Game | 5-Piece Havoc Eclipse | 5-piece | Usable early but replace with the Dream of the Lost 3-piece combo as soon as possible |
Dream of the Lost is Phrolova’s signature Echo set and one of the things that makes her kit unique — it’s a 3-piece set that provides unconditional (no conditions, no cooldowns) Crit Rate and Echo Skill DMG. Phrolova is actually the first character to truly maximize this set because she has no Resonance Energy requirement, meaning Dream of the Lost’s bonuses are always active.
Best Main Echo Choices
- Best: Nightmare: Hecate — increases Resonance Skill DMG and Echo Skill DMG, the two stats central to her kit. Provides 12% Havoc DMG Bonus and 20% Echo Skill DMG Bonus to the equipped Resonator
- Alternative: Any strong Havoc or Echo Skill DMG echo available to you during the early game before Nightmare: Hecate is accessible
Echo Slot Setup
- 4-Cost: CRIT DMG or CRIT Rate (depending on your current ratio — don’t exceed 100% Crit Rate)
- 3-Cost x2: Havoc DMG Bonus
- 1-Cost x2: ATK%
Endgame Stat Targets
| Stat | Target |
|---|---|
| CRIT Rate | As high as possible, hard cap at 100% |
| CRIT DMG | Stack as much as possible after Crit Rate is capped |
| ATK | General DPS scaling |
| Resonance Skill DMG Bonus | Priority substat |
| Echo Skill DMG Bonus | Priority substat |
Best Teams for Phrolova
The core principle for all Phrolova teams is the same: maximize the number of Echo Skill casts while her Maestro state is active. Each Echo Skill cast from any team member triggers an Enhanced Attack from Hecate. More Hecate attacks = more damage. The math is simple, which is why team building with her is so focused.
Team 1 — Echo Skill Core (Best in Slot)
This is the premier Phrolova composition. Qiuyuan is the dedicated Echo Skill buffer who provides Crit DMG and Echo Skill DMG buffs through his Liberation, Forte, and Outro. Cantarella casts multiple Echo Skills and deals coordinated attacks through her Liberation, while also providing Havoc DMG and Resonance Skill DMG amplification via her Outro.
| Slot | Character | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Off-Field DPS | Phrolova | Hecate off-field + Liberation burst |
| Echo Skill Buffer | Qiuyuan | Crit DMG + Echo Skill DMG buff |
| Sub-DPS / Support | Cantarella | Echo Skill triggers + Havoc DMG amp + healing |
The Outro chain here is clean and synergistic: Phrolova’s Outro buffs Cantarella with Heavy Attack DMG Amp, Cantarella’s Outro buffs Phrolova with Havoc and Resonance Skill DMG Amp, and Qiuyuan’s Outro feeds into the overall Echo Skill damage multiplier chain.
Team 2 — Mono Havoc Team
This team emphasizes Havoc synergy across all three slots, with each character’s Outro feeding into the next. Less Echo-Skill-focused than Team 1 but still a strong composition, particularly good for Whimpering Wastes content where Havoc element cohesion and AoE matter.
| Slot | Character | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Off-Field DPS | Phrolova | Hecate off-field + Liberation burst |
| Sub-DPS | Cantarella | Echo Skill triggers + Havoc DMG amp |
| Sub-DPS | Roccia | Enemy grouping + Havoc + Basic Attack DMG Outro |
The Outro loop in this composition: Roccia Outro buffs Cantarella’s Havoc and Basic Attack DMG → Cantarella Outro buffs Phrolova’s Havoc and Resonance Skill DMG → Phrolova Outro buffs Roccia’s Havoc and Heavy Attack DMG. It cycles cleanly and keeps buff uptime high.
Team 3 — Budget / Alternative Composition
If you don’t have Qiuyuan or Cantarella built, Phrolova can still function with alternative supports. The important note here is that fewer Echo Skill casts means fewer Hecate Enhanced Attack procs — expect a meaningful DPS loss compared to the premier teams, but these alternatives are still fully viable for clearing content.
| Slot | Character Options | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Off-Field DPS | Phrolova | Hecate off-field + Liberation burst |
| Sub-DPS | Danjin or Roccia | Havoc DPS support |
| Support / Healer | Shorekeeper or Verina | Sustain + coordinated attacks |
For players who already have a strong second team with SS Tier characters like Aemeath, Augusta, Lynae, or Mornye, Phrolova slotting as the dedicated Whimpering Wastes specialist is a natural role that frees those characters for Tower of Adversity duty.
Optimal Rotation
Phrolova’s rotation is built around building 6 Volatile Notes as efficiently as possible, triggering Scarlet Coda, entering Resolving Chord, then activating Maestro state and swapping off while Hecate does work.
Standard Full Rotation
- Intro Skill — Enter Reincarnate state immediately, deal Havoc damage
- Movement of Fate and Finality or Murmurs in a Haunting Dream — Use Reincarnate’s attack immediately to deal Resonance Skill DMG and gain a Volatile Note
- Basic Attack Stage 3 — Throw Hecate, gain red Note, dodge-cancel the animation once the Note registers
- Enhanced Basic Attack — Spend the red Note, gain another Note from the enhanced derivative
- Resonance Skill — Gain a blue Note, unlock Enhanced Resonance Skill
- Enhanced Resonance Skill — Spend the blue Note, gain another Note
- Repeat Basic Attack Stage 3 + Enhanced Basic Attack — Build toward 6 total Volatile Notes
- Scarlet Coda (when Compose state is active and 6 Notes are collected) — Heavy Attack triggers Scarlet Coda, deals Havoc DMG, counts as Echo Skill, enters Resolving Chord
- Waltz of Forsaken Depths (Resonance Liberation) — Activate Maestro state, Hecate begins fighting
- Echo Skill — Use your Echo immediately
- Outro Skill — Swap to next character while Hecate continues attacking off-field
While Maestro is active on the other characters’ turns, make sure each teammate casts their Echo Skill to trigger Hecate’s Enhanced Attacks.
Skill leveling priority: Resonance Liberation > Forte Circuit ≥ Basic Attack > Resonance Skill > Intro Skill
Resonance Chain (Sequence Nodes) — What’s Worth Pulling
| Node | Effect | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| S1 | Movement of Fate and Finality’s DMG multiplier +80%. Murmurs in a Haunting Dream’s DMG multiplier also boosted. Damage reduction during Maestro state | Solid personal damage increase + survivability improvement |
| S2 | Massive independent damage multiplier + fast Aftersound stacking for large Crit DMG gains. Widely considered the strongest S2 in the entire game | Must-stop point — widely rated overtuned, fundamentally changes her damage ceiling |
| S3 | Further Hecate Enhanced Attack damage improvements | Strong additional boost after S2 |
| S4 | Damage taken during Maestro state reduced by 30%. Improved crowd control during off-field Hecate phases | Defensive and CC improvement |
| S5 | Further kit enhancement | For dedicated Phrolova mains |
| S6 | Enhanced Attack — Hecate DMG multiplier +24%. During Maestro state, if off-field, targets take 40% more DMG from Hecate and Phrolova. If on-field, Phrolova gains 60% Havoc DMG Bonus | Full power unlock — massive on-field and off-field damage increase |
Pulling recommendation: S0 is viable for general content but she underperforms compared to her potential without at least the signature weapon. S2 is the highest-priority sequence investment in the game by most community assessments — it provides a massive damage multiplier and rapid Aftersound stacking that dramatically changes how hard she hits. If you’re going past S0, S2 is the gold standard stopping point for most accounts. S6 is for committed heavy spenders only.
Ascension Materials
| Material Type | Name | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Afterlife | Overworld collectible in the Rinascita region |
| Boss Drop | Netherworld’s Stare | Weekly boss content |
| Common Drops | Mech Core variants | Echo drops from relevant region enemies |
| Forte Crystals | Carved Crystal | Forgery Challenges |
| Shell Credits | 170,000+ (ascension) | General farming |
Afterlife is the trickiest material to stock up on since it requires open-world collection rather than boss farming. Use the interactive map on community tools to locate Afterlife spawn points efficiently if you’re pre-farming before pulling.
Strengths and Weaknesses
What She Does Well
- Best Havoc DPS in the game when built with signature weapon
- Zero Resonance Energy Liberation — gives teams more flexibility in building ER on other slots
- Strong off-field DPS through Hecate — she contributes damage even when not the active character
- Excellent AoE grouping through Resonance Skill and Scarlet Coda — pulls enemies together consistently
- Dominant in Whimpering Wastes — her sustained buffs compound with each wave and her wave-clearing speed is top tier
- S2 is rated the strongest sequence node in the entire game — massive payoff for extra copies
- Her Outro’s 20% Havoc DMG Amp and 25% Heavy Attack DMG Amp is excellent for Havoc teams
Where She Falls Short
- High-investment character — she struggles notably without her signature weapon compared to alternatives
- Team compositions are specialized — she strongly prefers Echo Skill-heavy teammates, limiting flexibility
- At S0 without signature, she underperforms compared to more accessible SS Tier characters like Galbrena, Augusta, or Cartethyia
- Rotation requires animation cancel practice (the dodge-cancel on Basic Attack Stage 3) to play optimally
- Not ideal for players who want a generalist character that slots into any team easily
Is Phrolova Worth Pulling in Version 3.2?
Yes — with conditions.
If you have the resources to build her properly — meaning ideally her signature weapon Lethean Elegy and the right team pieces in Cantarella and Qiuyuan — Phrolova is an outstanding investment and one of the best performing DPS characters in Whimpering Wastes content specifically.
If you’re newer to the game or already have three or more strong limited DPS teams built around SS Tier units like Aemeath, Augusta, Cartethyia, or Galbrena, you may want to evaluate whether Phrolova fills a gap in your roster before committing. She’s not a character who slots easily into existing teams as a flex pick — she wants her own dedicated composition.
For players who love the Havoc element and want to dominate Whimpering Wastes, she’s a must-pull. For players who prefer flexible supports that elevate multiple DPS options — like Mornye or Lynae — the calculation is different.
Final Verdict
Phrolova is one of the most unique and mechanically interesting characters in Wuthering Waves. Her musical note system, zero-energy Liberation, off-field Hecate gameplay, and massive damage ceiling make her genuinely exciting to build and play. The lore backing her is some of the best in the game, and everything about her — from her design to her kit to her companion Hecate — feels intentional and cohesive.
She rewards investment with some of the highest Havoc DPS output available, and her S2 is widely considered the best sequence upgrade in the entire roster. If she fits your account and your playstyle, she’s one of the most satisfying characters to master.
