Not every SS Tier character gets to be the loudest one in the room. Qiuyuan is the blind swordsman standing quietly in the corner who, the moment the fight starts, becomes the reason everyone around him hits twice as hard.

He debuted in Version 2.7 and is currently rerunning in Version 3.2 Phase 1 — available from March 19 to April 9, 2026 on the Wanderer Knows No Far and Near banner. His timing could not be better. Version 3.2 introduced Sigrika, whose entire damage identity is built around Echo Skill DMG, and Qiuyuan is the only character in the game who buffs that specific archetype the way he does. If you’re running Sigrika, Galbrena, or Phrolova, he’s not just good — he’s essentially mandatory.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Who Is Qiuyuan? — Lore & Background

Qiuyuan is a former senior agent of Mingting’s Internal Security Agency, one of the most elite intelligence organizations in the Huanglong region. In his younger days, he was not a particularly gentle person — enmity filled those years, as the game acknowledges plainly. But loyalty came to define his adult life, and he served with integrity until the institution he’d committed himself to turned on him.

He was framed for a murder he didn’t commit and thrown in prison. When he was eventually freed, there was no position to return to and no one waiting to make it right. So he walked away — a blind swordsman wandering Huanglong alone, seeking not fame or rank, but mastery of the blade and a life anchored in his own moral code.

The blindness is a quiet detail that the game never over-explains, which makes it feel all the more intentional. He moves with the absolute stillness and precision of someone who has had to develop every other sense to compensate. His voice lines and general demeanor carry the weight of a person who has been through genuine injustice and chosen to become something measured and resolved on the other side of it rather than bitter.

His name has roots in historical Chinese culture — the real Qiu Yuan was a famed calligrapher and poet of the Yuan dynasty who, after his teaching years ended, retreated to live a reclusive life in the mountains. The parallel to this Qiuyuan’s wandering existence is clean and deliberate.

He is an Aero Unclear Resonator, and there is no better word for the energy he brings both in story and in combat: clarity under pressure.

Qiuyuan’s Role in the Meta

Qiuyuan is the sole dedicated Echo Skill DMG buffer in Wuthering Waves. He is the only character who amplifies this specific damage type, and that exclusivity is exactly why he’s rated SS Tier even though his personal damage at S0 is modest by itself.

The key numbers that make him invaluable in the right teams:

  • His Forte Circuit provides a 30% Echo Skill DMG Bonus to all nearby active Resonators via Bamboo’s Shade at 400 Swordster’s Soliloquy points
  • His Resonance Liberation adds up to 30% Crit DMG to all nearby Resonators, scaling from his own Crit Rate (2% Crit DMG per 1% Crit Rate above 50%, capping at 30%)
  • His Outro Skill grants the incoming Resonator a massive 50% Echo Skill DMG Amplification — one of the most powerful Outro buffs in the game for this archetype
  • His signature weapon adds another 20% Echo Skill DMG on top of all of that
  • The Law of Harmony Echo set adds an additional 16% Echo Skill DMG

Stack those together on a dedicated Echo Skill DPS and the numbers become extraordinary. For characters like Sigrika — whose entire kit is classified as Echo Skill DMG — Qiuyuan is genuinely irreplaceable. Without him, she’s a strong DPS. With him, she enters an entirely different damage bracket.

The honest limitation: outside Echo Skill teams, he doesn’t bring enough to justify his slot. He isn’t a universal buffer like Lynae or Mornye. He’s a specialist, and he is the best in the world at his specialty.

Qiuyuan’s Skills Breakdown

Qiuyuan’s gameplay revolves entirely around his Forte Circuit — Swordster’s Soliloquy — and how efficiently you can fill and spend it each rotation. His on-field time is intentionally short, and his rotation is one of the tightest and most purposeful in the game.

Basic Attack — Movement of Life and Death

Qiuyuan performs up to 3 consecutive Aero attacks. The third hit is the most important — it restores 100 points of Swordster’s Soliloquy. After a Basic or Heavy Attack, there’s also a brief window where Qiuyuan becomes immune to the next instance of damage he takes and auto-triggers a Dodge Counter if hit during this window. In practice this passive defense rarely triggers mid-rotation since any subsequent command cancels it, but it’s a useful safety net during slower moments.

When Swordster’s Soliloquy hits 200 points, Basic Attack is replaced with the enhanced version — Thus Spoke the Blade: Inkwash — which chains up to 4 consecutive heavy strikes dealing Aero Heavy Attack DMG, with each stage restoring additional Soliloquy.

Forte Circuit — Swordster’s Soliloquy (The Core System)

This is Qiuyuan’s entire identity in one mechanic. He fills Swordster’s Soliloquy (max 600 points) through Basic Attacks, Dodge Counters, and his Intro Skill, and hitting different thresholds unlocks progressively stronger abilities:

  • 200 points: Basic Attack replaced with Thus Spoke the Blade: Inkwash (enhanced Heavy Attack chain)
  • 400 points: Bamboo’s Shade activates — grants all nearby active Resonators 30% Echo Skill DMG Bonus for 30 seconds
  • 600 points (full): Enters Inksplash of Mind state for 8 seconds — Heavy Attack becomes a 3-stage enhanced sequence (To Teach → To Save → To Sacrifice), each considered an Echo Skill cast

The Inksplash of Mind Heavy Attack sequence is his main personal damage source. Each hit of the three-stage chain is counted as an Echo Skill cast, which means it also procs Hecate’s Enhanced Attacks if Phrolova is in Maestro state on the field.

Resonance Skill — Undaunted Wayfarer

Qiuyuan’s Resonance Skill has two versions:

  • Tap: Guard Point mechanic — if cast while being hit, Qiuyuan nullifies the damage, stagnates nearby enemies, and becomes immune to interruption during the skill. The tap version cannot be animation-canceled.
  • Hold: Dash forward dealing Aero Echo Skill DMG. No Guard Point, but can be animation-canceled for faster rotations. If no enemies are nearby, Qiuyuan leaps and dashes airborne, consuming Stamina until released.

The hold version is the one you’ll use most in combat rotations because of the animation cancel potential. The tap version is a situational defensive tool when you need a panic button.

Resonance Liberation — Sundering Strike

Qiuyuan’s Liberation deals Aero damage to targets within range, considered Echo Skill DMG. The critical buff here: for every 1% of Qiuyuan’s Crit Rate above 50%, this skill increases the Crit DMG of all nearby active Resonators by 2%, capping at 30% at 65% Crit Rate.

This is why hitting 65% Crit Rate is a hard stat threshold for Qiuyuan — not for his own damage, but to consistently deliver that full 30% Crit DMG boost to your DPS. The buff lasts 30 seconds, so it has comfortable uptime within a standard rotation.

Intro & Outro Skills

  • Intro Skill: Grants Qiuyuan 400 points of Swordster’s Soliloquy instantly — this is the main reason you always want him entering via Intro. It jumps him directly to Bamboo’s Shade range (30% Echo Skill DMG Bonus) and two Basic Attacks away from Inksplash of Mind, making the rotation dramatically faster than starting cold
  • Outro Skill: Grants the incoming Resonator 50% Echo Skill DMG Amplification — one of the most powerful type-specific Outro buffs in the entire game. Always ensure you swap to your Echo Skill DPS immediately after his Outro

Best Weapons for Qiuyuan

RankWeaponTypeWhy It Works
1stEmerald Sentence (Signature)5-Star SwordBoosts ATK and significantly enhances Heavy Attack DMG, which directly feeds into his Forte-based damage. Also provides 20% Echo Skill DMG to the team via weapon passive
2ndEmerald of Genesis5-Star SwordReliable Energy Regen and ATK scaling — ensures Liberation is available every rotation consistently
3rdRed Spring5-Star SwordFunctions as a stat stick with raw CRIT stats — viable even without perfectly matching his kit
4thLumingloss (R5)4-Star SwordBest 4-star option — provides Heavy Attack DMG Bonus that directly benefits his Inksplash of Mind sequence
5thCommando of Conviction4-Star SwordConsistent ATK buff after Intro Skill — solid general-purpose option

Qiuyuan is reasonably flexible on weapons compared to someone like Phrolova who is heavily dependent on her signature. Even without Emerald Sentence, Emerald of Genesis or a high-refinement Lumingloss covers most of his rotation needs. The signature is the ceiling but not a hard requirement.

Best Echo Sets for Qiuyuan

PriorityEcho SetBest For
#15-Piece Law of HarmonyBest overall for Echo Skill teams — boosts his Heavy Attack DMG and provides team-wide Echo Skill DMG bonus; ideal when running multiple Echo Skill DPS like Phrolova and Cantarella
#25-Piece Moonlit CloudsBest for single hypercarry Echo Skill teams (Sigrika or Galbrena) — high ATK% buff and stacks with his own 30% Crit DMG buff
#35-Piece Sierra GaleFor players prioritizing Qiuyuan’s personal Aero damage over support output

Echo Slot Setup

  • 4-Cost: Crit Rate — essential to reliably hit the 65% threshold for max Liberation Crit DMG buff
  • 3-Cost x2: Aero DMG Bonus
  • 1-Cost x2: ATK%

Endgame Stat Targets

StatTargetWhy

Energy Regen130%+Keeps Liberation available every rotation given his short field time

Heavy Attack DMGSecondary priorityScales Inksplash of Mind sequence
Aero DMGGeneral scalingOverall personal damage

The 65% Crit Rate and 130% ER are the two non-negotiable stat checkpoints. Everything else is optimizing from there. Don’t skip these for raw damage stats — the Liberation Crit DMG buff for your team is worth far more than marginal personal DPS gains.

Best Teams for Qiuyuan

Team 1 — Sigrika Echo Skill Core (Version 3.2 Best in Slot)

This is the highest-ceiling team composition available in Version 3.2 and the reason Qiuyuan is rerunning alongside Sigrika’s debut. Sigrika’s entire damage kit is classified as Echo Skill DMG, which means every single buff Qiuyuan provides — the 30% Echo Skill DMG Bonus, the 30% Crit DMG, the 50% Echo Skill Amplification Outro — feeds directly and completely into her damage output. Without Qiuyuan, Sigrika performs well. With him, she reaches a damage tier that most other DPS characters in the game can’t match.

Team 2 — Galbrena Echo Skill Core

Before Sigrika’s arrival, this was the premier Echo Skill team. Qiuyuan’s Echo Skill DMG amplification and Crit DMG buffs funnel directly into Galbrena for explosive burst windows. Smooth rotation between Qiuyuan and Galbrena’s combos is the key to maximizing this composition.

Team 3 — Phrolova Echo Skill Core

Qiuyuan is the designated buffer for Phrolova compositions, providing the Echo Skill DMG amplification that powers Hecate’s Enhanced Attacks during Maestro state. Cantarella handles the healing and additional Echo Skill casts to keep Hecate attacking at maximum frequency.

One important note here: because Phrolova quickly swaps off field after her Liberation to let Hecate work in Maestro state, Qiuyuan’s Bamboo’s Shade buff only applies to the on-field character. The Outro’s 50% Echo Skill Amplification still applies when Phrolova enters, but ensure your timing accounts for who is active during Qiuyuan’s buff windows.

Sub-DPS / BufferQiuyuanEcho Skill DMG amp + Crit DMG buff

Team 4 — Alternative / Flexible Compositions

If you’re running Qiuyuan but don’t have his ideal DPS partners yet, he still slots into teams with other SS Tier carries, though at reduced effectiveness since those characters don’t scale off Echo Skill DMG the same way. Characters like Aemeath, Augusta, Cartethyia, or Iuno benefit somewhat from his Crit DMG buff on Liberation, but don’t receive the massive Echo Skill DMG Amplification payoff. In these scenarios, Lynae provides more universal value as the sub-DPS slot.

Optimal Rotation

Qiuyuan’s rotation is built for speed. The goal is to maximize his buff uptime and then get him off field so your DPS can absorb the Outro’s 50% Echo Skill Amplification.

Standard Rotation (With Intro Skill — Recommended)

  1. Intro Skill — Grants 400 Swordster’s Soliloquy instantly; Bamboo’s Shade (30% Echo Skill DMG Bonus) activates immediately
  2. 2x Basic Attacks (Stage 3 hits) — Build Soliloquy from 400 to 600, reaching full Inksplash of Mind state
  3. Echo Skill — Cast Echo for team buff and personal damage
  4. Resonance Liberation — Apply 30% Crit DMG buff to all nearby Resonators (ensure 65%+ Crit Rate for maximum scaling)
  5. Inksplash of Mind Heavy Attack sequence — Hold Normal Attack: To Teach → To Save → To Sacrifice (3-hit chain, each counted as Echo Skill cast)
  6. Resonance Skill (Hold version) — Deal additional Echo Skill DMG
  7. Outro Skill — Swap to your Echo Skill DPS immediately with 50% Echo Skill Amplification active

Starting Cold (No Intro Skill)

  1. Basic Attack Stage 3 (x3) — Build Soliloquy from 0 toward 600
  2. Echo Skill — Cast at earliest opportunity
  3. Resonance Liberation — Apply Crit DMG buff
  4. Enhanced Basic Attack (Inkwash) chain — Use once 200 Soliloquy threshold is hit
  5. Inksplash of Mind sequence — Once at 600 Soliloquy
  6. Resonance Skill → Outro — Exit field with 50% Amp active

Always try to engineer rotations so Qiuyuan enters via Intro. The 400 instant Soliloquy it provides cuts his on-field time nearly in half and keeps your DPS’s buff uptime much tighter.

Skill leveling priority: Forte Circuit > Resonance Liberation > Resonance Skill > Basic Attack > Intro Skill

Resonance Chain (Sequence Nodes) — What’s Worth Pulling

NodeEffectVerdict
S1To Teach, To Save, and To Sacrifice can no longer be interrupted. Qiuyuan gains 20% Crit Rate increaseStrong QoL — interruption immunity on the Inksplash sequence is meaningful, and 20% Crit Rate helps hit the 65% threshold more easily
S2Personal damage boost through enhanced Forte multipliersSolid DPS increase for personal output
S3Liberation DMG multiplier +500%. New Resonance Skill unlocked when Concerto Energy is full outside Inksplash, dealing massive Echo Skill DMG and restoring 400 Soliloquy. Heavy Attack sequence DMG multipliers increased dramaticallyFull DPS transformation — this is where Qiuyuan transitions from pure support to a serious damage dealer in his own right
S4ATK +20%Standard personal damage increase
S5Ignores 15% of target’s DEF when dealing damageSolid universal damage buff
S6Stagnates nearby targets for 5 seconds after To Sacrifice. Exits Inksplash dealing large AoE Echo Skill DMG. New Resonance Skill grants 100% Crit DMG for 6 secondsFull power unlock — massive combined personal and team utility upgrade

Pulling recommendation: S0 is the intended support build and completely valid for his primary role. The signature weapon is a higher priority than extra copies if you’re choosing between them. S1 adds meaningful QoL and stat convenience. S3 is where he transforms into a dual-threat damage dealer and support, making it a strong stopping point for accounts that want to push him further. S6 is for dedicated Qiuyuan mains only.

Wintry Bell is the most time-gated resource since it’s an open-world collectible. If you’re pre-farming before pulling, start collecting Wintry Bell from the Gorges of Spirits area immediately and supplement with the weekly pharmacy purchase. The Curse of the Abyss weekly drop from Threnodian: Leviathan is the Forte skill bottleneck — make sure you’re clearing that weekly once he’s in your roster.

Strengths and Weaknesses

What He Does Well

  • The only character in the game who buffs Echo Skill DMG — makes him irreplaceable in this archetype
  • 50% Echo Skill DMG Amplification Outro is one of the most powerful type-specific Outro buffs in the game
  • Short, efficient rotation — gets on field, delivers his buffs, and gets off field quickly so DPS can operate
  • 30% Crit DMG buff from Liberation at 65% Crit Rate — meaningful for all Resonators in the team, not just Echo Skill carriers
  • Future-proof investment as more Echo Skill DMG characters continue to release
  • His value compounds in Whimpering Wastes where Echo Skill teams perform best in wave-based content
  • Works alongside Phrolova as her dedicated buffer, enhancing Hecate’s Enhanced Attacks during Maestro state

Where He Falls Short

  • Specialist, not a generalist — outside Echo Skill teams, he contributes significantly less than universal buffers like Lynae or Mornye
  • Personal damage at S0 is modest — he’s primarily a support investment rather than a carry
  • Bamboo’s Shade only buffs the active on-field character — limits synergy with off-field DPS characters like Phrolova after she swaps out
  • Requires 65% Crit Rate and 130% ER minimum stat investment — you can’t skimp on Echo farming
  • Needs specific DPS partners to justify his slot — pulling him without Sigrika, Galbrena, or Phrolova significantly reduces his value

Is Qiuyuan Worth Pulling in Version 3.2?

Yes — particularly with his timing alongside Sigrika’s debut.

The question is whether you have or plan to have the Echo Skill DPS characters that need him. If you’re running Sigrika (Version 3.2’s new flagship DPS), he’s essentially mandatory to reach her damage ceiling. If you have Galbrena or Phrolova in your roster, he’s the buffer that takes those characters from good to dominant.

If your current roster is built around Tune Break compositions featuring Aemeath, Augusta, or Cartethyia, pulling Lynae or Mornye provides more immediate value since their buffs are universal. Qiuyuan is a deliberate, long-term investment into the Echo Skill archetype specifically.

He also genuinely gets better over time. As more Echo Skill DMG characters release, his value compounds — every new Echo Skill DPS that arrives makes the existing investment in him more rewarding.

Final Verdict

Qiuyuan is the definition of a support character done right. He doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. He is the absolute best at one thing — amplifying Echo Skill damage — and in Version 3.2 that one thing is the most relevant archetype in endgame content. His rotation is clean, his buff delivery is tight, and his Outro is the most impactful type-specific handoff buff in the game.

He’s not the character for players who want a universal plug-and-play support. But if you’re invested in the Echo Skill archetype — if you’re running Sigrika, Galbrena, or Phrolova — Qiuyuan is the single highest-impact character you can add to your roster right now. Don’t let the rerun pass.
