Understanding the Path of Elation

Before building Yao Guang, you need to understand how the Path of Elation works — because her entire kit revolves around it.

When one or more Elation characters are in your party, the Aeon Aha appears on the action timeline as a special unit — similar to Jing Yuan’s Lightning-Lord or Lingsha’s Fuyuan. Aha has its own speed that scales based on how many Elation characters are on the team. When Aha takes its turn, it triggers an Aha Instant.

During an Aha Instant, three things happen simultaneously:

• All debuffs are cleansed from every Elation character on the field
• All accumulated Punchline stacks are consumed
• Every Elation character on the field uses their unique Elation Skill in sequence, dealing Elation DMG

Punchline is a team-shared resource. It accumulates as Elation characters take actions and determines the potency of Elation Damage during an Aha Instant — more Punchline means stronger Elation Skills. The team’s shared Punchline pool fills faster the more Elation characters are present and the more frequently they act.

Yao Guang’s role is to accelerate this system: deploy her Zone to boost Elation values, generate Punchline stacks with every action, and use her Ultimate to trigger an immediate extra Aha Instant on demand — regardless of where Aha sits on the action bar.

Who Is Yao Guang in Honkai Star Rail?

Yao Guang is a 5-star character following the Path of Elation with the Physical element. She is the Arbiter-General of the Xianzhou Yuque — the highest judicial authority of her vessel. She speaks little but sees everything, wielding authority and insight with quiet precision. Her resemblance to Sparkle is a point of note for many players, though the two have very different personalities.

On the battlefield, Yao Guang is positioned as the Elation Path’s equivalent of Ruan Mei in Break teams or Tribbie in Remembrance teams — the foundational support who makes the entire Path function optimally. Her Zone deployment, Punchline generation, Certified Banger state, and Aha Instant triggers are the infrastructure that Elation DPS characters like Sparxie and Archer need to reach their full damage ceiling.

Yao Guang Skills and Abilities

Basic ATK – Weal and Woe Lots

Deals Physical DMG to a single target and adjacent enemies, scaling off Yao Guang’s ATK. While her Zone is active, each Basic ATK generates 3 Punchline stacks for the team. In practice, Basic ATK is Yao Guang’s SP-free filler action between Zone refreshes — it contributes meaningfully to Punchline accumulation even as a filler move.

Skill – Celestial Chart of Good Fortune

Deploys a Zone that lasts 3 turns. While the Zone is active, all allies’ Elation stat increases by an amount equal to 20% of Yao Guang’s own Elation stat. This Zone buff is the centrepiece of her support role — higher Elation means stronger Elation Skills and more powerful Punchline-enhanced Aha Instants. Using the Skill also immediately generates 3 Punchline stacks. The Zone must be reapplied every 3 turns.

Elation Skill – Woe Lots (Triggered During Aha Instant)

When Aha Instant triggers, Yao Guang automatically uses Woe Lots as her Elation Skill contribution. This causes all enemies to take increased DMG for a duration and simultaneously regenerates Skill Points for the team. The SP regeneration is a significant support bonus — it feeds Sparxie’s SP-hungry kit and keeps the rest of the team resourced without Yao Guang needing to dedicate turns to SP management.

Ultimate – Hexagram of Feathered Fortune

Yao Guang’s most important ability. It immediately triggers an extra Aha Instant with a fixed Punchline consumption of 20 stacks (this does not interfere with the natural Aha Instant cycle). The extra Aha Instant fires all Elation Skills simultaneously. Additionally, the Ultimate grants all allies 20% All-Type RES PEN for 3 turns — a team-wide penetration buff that applies to every damage type from every character. This RES PEN does not require elemental Weakness alignment, meaning it benefits off-element hits, Physical damage, and non-Elation teammates equally. Costs 180 Energy — a very high cost that makes Energy Regeneration Rate a mandatory stat.

Talent – Certified Banger

After an Aha Instant occurs, all allies enter the Certified Banger state for a limited duration. While Certified Banger is active, each ally’s attacks deal 1 instance of Additional Elation DMG. If the attack consumed a Skill Point, this Elation DMG is further amplified. This passive bonus applies to non-Elation characters as well — even supports and sustains contribute Elation damage while the state persists.

Technique – Fortune Drawing

After using the Technique, automatically triggers the Skill effect once at the start of the next battle without consuming any Skill Points. This means the Zone is deployed immediately from turn one without spending SP — a critical quality-of-life tool that means the team’s Elation buff is active before anyone takes their first action.

Major Traces

• A2 – Weal Lots: When Yao Guang uses her Skill, all allies’ Elation increases and the team immediately gains additional Punchline stacks. The Punchline generation from Skill use becomes more substantial with this trace unlocked — use Skill promptly when entering combat to front-load Punchline accumulation
• A4 – Farsight: Increases Yao Guang’s Effect RES by 35%, improving her resistance to Crowd Control debuffs. A defensive quality-of-life trace that keeps her functional in endgame fights with heavy enemy debuff pressure

1. When She Decided to See (Best in Slot – Signature)

Yao Guang’s dedicated signature Light Cone. It provides SPD and Energy Regeneration Rate — the two stats most critical to her function. The SPD bonus directly helps reach the 160 SPD threshold for her A6 Trace. The Energy Regen helps cycle the 180-cost Ultimate more frequently, enabling more extra Aha Instants and more 20% All-Type RES PEN windows for the team. It also provides a bonus that increases the Elation of all allies, stacking with Yao Guang’s Zone buff. An excellent cone that covers all her build requirements cleanly in one slot. Prydwen and Game8 both note it is not a must-pull given the quality of 4-star alternatives, but it is the best choice if you have it.

2. Today’s Good Luck (4-Star – Best Alternative)

A Battle Pass Light Cone that increases the wearer’s CRIT Rate and provides additional Elation stacks during Aha Instants. The CRIT Rate bonus improves Yao Guang’s personal Elation Skill damage, and the Elation bonus during Aha Instants feeds her team’s Punchline-scaling output. A very strong 4-star choice that is available through regular Battle Pass purchase and worth superimposing over time for a greater effect.

3. Mushy Shroomy’s Adventures (4-Star)

Provides SPD and a conditional Punchline-generation bonus. SPD is always valuable on Yao Guang, and the Punchline effect contributes directly to the team’s Aha Instant trigger frequency. A solid free-to-play-accessible alternative when Today’s Good Luck is not available.

4. Past Self in Mirror (Bronya’s Signature – If Available)

Though not designed for Elation, this cone provides strong DMG amplification for the equipped character’s allies after Ultimate use. If sitting unused, it can contribute to the team’s damage in Yao Guang’s hands by ensuring her Ultimate window — already powerful from the RES PEN buff — also provides a brief damage amplification. A niche option for players with this cone available and no better Elation-path alternative.

Yao Guang Best Relic Sets (4.3)

Diviner of Distant Reach (4-Piece) – Best in Slot

The dedicated Elation Path relic set introduced in Version 4.0 and the clear best-in-slot choice for Yao Guang. The 2-piece gives +6% SPD — directly helping reach the 160 SPD threshold. The 4-piece bonus provides CRIT Rate before entering combat based on SPD: +10% CRIT Rate at 120 SPD and +18% CRIT Rate at 160 SPD. At 160 SPD, the full +18% CRIT Rate activates — improving both Yao Guang’s own Elation Skill damage and her direct damage contribution. Additionally, the first time Yao Guang uses her Elation Skill in combat, all allies’ Elation is increased. This set directly addresses SPD, CRIT Rate, and Elation — her three most important parameters. Farm this from the Cavern of Corrosion on Planarcadia.

Messenger Traversing Hackerspace (2) + Diviner of Distant Reach (2)

A transitional alternative while farming for a complete 4-piece Diviner set. Both 2-piece bonuses provide +6% SPD — for a total of +12% SPD from just the set bonuses alone. This helps reach 160 SPD more easily while you continue to improve individual piece substats. Use this combination if your 2-piece pieces have better substats than your current 4-piece options.

Yao Guang Best Planar Ornaments (4.3)

Lushaka, the Sunken Seas (Best Overall)

The recommended Planar Ornament for Yao Guang in most team contexts. It provides +5% Energy Regeneration Rate — directly helping cycle her 180-cost Ultimate — and, when the wearer is not the lead character in the lineup, increases the first character’s ATK by 12%. In Elation teams where Yao Guang supports Sparxie as the lead DPS, this 12% ATK buff applies to Sparxie’s output for the entire fight. Both parts of this ornament are meaningful contributions from Yao Guang’s sustain slot.

Sprightly Vonwacq (Action Advance Option)

Provides +5% Energy Regeneration Rate and, when Yao Guang’s SPD is 120 or higher at battle start, advances her action forward by 40%. The action advance ensures she acts first to deploy her Zone before any DPS character takes their turn. This is particularly valuable when your rotation requires the Zone to be active before the first Elation Skill fires. Use Sprightly Vonwacq in rotations where Yao Guang needs to act first; use Lushaka when the ATK buff for Sparxie matters more.

Substat Priority

• SPD (highest priority — reach 160 for A6 Trace Elation bonus and full Diviner 4-piece CRIT Rate activation)

The most important build target for Yao Guang is clear: 160 SPD. Everything else is secondary. Her A6 Trace only activates at this threshold, her Diviner 4-piece CRIT Rate bonus maxes at this threshold, and a faster Yao Guang takes more turns to deploy more Zone refreshes and generate more Punchline stacks. With Diviner’s 2-piece SPD bonus, the signature Light Cone’s SPD bonus, and SPD boots, reaching 160 is achievable. GosuGamers notes that pushing toward 200 SPD is aspirational for the most dedicated builds.

A notable difference from most supports: do not use ATK% or DMG% sphere. Elation DMG is calculated differently from standard damage types and does not benefit from ATK% or DMG% in the same way — HP% or DEF% provide better survivability without wasting a valuable main stat slot on an inefficient modifier.

Yao Guang Best Team Compositions (4.3)

Best Team: Sparxie, Yao Guang, Sparkle, Sustain

The strongest and most natural team for Yao Guang in 4.3. Sparxie is the primary Elation DPS — her Engagement Farming mechanic generates enormous Punchline stacks through rapid repeated triggers, and her Elation Skill during Aha Instants is the team’s primary damage spike. Yao Guang supports by deploying her Zone, generating Punchlines on every Basic ATK and Skill, and triggering extra Aha Instants with her Ultimate to give Sparxie additional Elation Skill procs. Sparkle fills the third slot because Sparxie’s kit consumes Skill Points heavily — Sparkle’s SP generation keeps Sparxie’s rotation running without gaps. A sustain character in the fourth slot completes the team.

Archer + Yao Guang: Archer, Yao Guang, Sparkle/Sunday, Sustain

Yao Guang is a strong partner for Archer. Her Certified Banger state adds Additional Elation DMG to Archer’s attacks, her Woe Lots Elation Skill regenerates SP during Aha Instants to fuel Archer’s SP-hungry playstyle, and the 20% All-Type RES PEN from her Ultimate amplifies Archer’s burst windows significantly. Mobalytics describes this as a good sidegrade for Archer teams where Sparxie is not available. Sparkle or Sunday rounds out the support role.

Early Elation Transition: Yao Guang, Sparxie, Tribbie, Aventurine

For players who want a universal damage amplifier alongside Yao Guang and Sparxie, Tribbie is an excellent pick. GosuGamers notes that supports whose DMG bonuses do not scale off ATK% or DMG% — like Tribbie and Cipher — fit naturally into Elation teams because Elation Damage has its own scaling system. Tribbie’s RES PEN and follow-up damage add cleanly to Sparxie’s output. Aventurine provides shields and survivability.

Yao Guang in Non-Elation Teams

Yao Guang can technically slot into non-Elation teams, but her value drops significantly. Most of her mechanics — Zone Elation boost, Punchline generation, Aha Instant triggering — specifically require Elation DPS characters to convert into damage. In a team without an Elation DPS, her Zone buff goes to waste, and the Aha Instant triggers deal minimal Elation Skill damage. Her 20% All-Type RES PEN from Ultimate remains universally useful, but that alone does not justify running her over dedicated supports like Robin or Ruan Mei in standard teams. Build and use her specifically for Elation compositions.

Yao Guang Eidolons – Are They Worth It?

E1

Increases the Elation and Punchline generation from Yao Guang’s Skill. The Zone’s Punchline bonus on application becomes more substantial, accelerating the pace at which the team reaches Aha Instant thresholds from the first turn. A clean and consistent improvement to her primary support action.

E2

During an Aha Instant triggered by Yao Guang’s Ultimate, the Punchline consumption threshold is modified and the team gains additional buffing effects. Effectively makes the on-demand Aha Instant from her Ultimate more powerful, increasing the burst window’s total output. A meaningful upgrade for players who want tighter control over the team’s peak damage turns.

E4

Increases the All-Type RES PEN granted by Yao Guang’s Ultimate beyond the base 20%. More RES PEN on the team’s most important buff window amplifies every character’s output during the Ultimate burst phase. Solid for players investing heavily in Yao Guang’s Ultimate cycling rotation.

E6

A significant enhancement to Yao Guang’s overall Elation and Zone support value. The Zone’s Elation boost becomes substantially larger at E6, and all allies’ Elation Skills deal more damage during Aha Instants. A very strong E6 for fully committed Elation team players.

Recommended stopping point: E0 or E2. E0 Yao Guang is fully functional as an Elation support in all current endgame content. E1 is a clean upgrade if obtained. E2 noticeably improves the burst window from her Ultimate. Beyond E2, returns are meaningful but the cost is significant — focus resources on the Elation DPS characters first.

Yao Guang Rotation Guide

Yao Guang’s rotation is built around keeping the Zone active and cycling her Ultimate as frequently as possible:

1. Use the Technique before every combat — the Zone deploys automatically at battle start without spending a Skill Point, meaning the team enters combat with the Elation buff already active
2. On Yao Guang’s first turn, use the Skill to immediately generate Punchlines and confirm Zone uptime for the first 3 turns. The A2 Trace’s additional Punchline generation fires here
3. Use Basic ATK as the default filler on turns when the Zone is still active — each Basic ATK generates 3 Punchlines and advances the team toward the next Aha Instant
4. Reapply the Skill every 3 turns to refresh the Zone. Never let the Zone expire — the Elation buff loss is significant for Elation DPS characters
5. Use the Ultimate as soon as 180 Energy is reached. This triggers an immediate extra Aha Instant, applying the 20% All-Type RES PEN for 3 turns. Time it to coincide with Sparxie’s or Archer’s peak damage window for maximum amplification
6. After the Ultimate, return to the Basic ATK and Skill Zone refresh loop. With Energy Regeneration Rate on the rope and the signature Light Cone’s ERR bonus, the next Ultimate cycle arrives before the RES PEN window expires

The key discipline: never skip Zone refreshes. The Zone’s Elation boost is the foundation of the team’s entire damage system. Missing a Zone turn drops the Elation buff and reduces every subsequent Aha Instant’s output. Keep the Zone active at all times and build toward your Ultimate on the side.

Is Yao Guang Worth Using in Patch 4.3?

Yes — if you are building an Elation team, Yao Guang is an essential investment. She is the dedicated Elation support that the entire Path is designed around, and without her the Elation system loses its primary engine: Zone-based Elation amplification, reliable Punchline generation, and on-demand Aha Instant triggering via Ultimate.

Game8 recommends pulling for Yao Guang specifically if you plan to pull for other Elation units in the future or if you already run SP-hungry DPS characters like Archer. Mobalytics describes her as analogous to Cyrene or Hyacine for their respective paths — a foundational support who is pivotal to the mono-path but whose value is locked to that ecosystem.

The honest caveat: Yao Guang has almost no value outside Elation teams. Unlike supports such as Ruan Mei or Robin who bring universal buffs to any team, Yao Guang’s kit is purpose-built for Elation. If you are not invested in building an Elation roster, she does not slot into other teams effectively. But for players committed to the Path of Elation, she is a must-have in 4.3.
