Who Is Ruan Mei in Honkai Star Rail?

Ruan Mei is a 5-star character on the Path of Harmony using the Ice element. She is Member #81 of the Genius Society and one of the three masterminds behind the Simulated Universe. On the battlefield, she plays a pure support role. She does not deal much damage herself. Instead, she makes her whole team hit harder and break enemy shields faster.

She was first released in Version 1.6 and has stayed relevant across every major patch since. In patch 4.3, she is still rated as a top-tier support and fits into both Break-centric teams and standard damage compositions. Ruan Mei Kit Overview

Understanding how her kit works is key to building her correctly. Here is a quick breakdown of each ability.

Basic ATK – Threading Fragrance

Deals Ice DMG to a single enemy equal to 130% of Ruan Mei’s ATK. It also generates 20 Energy. You will use this mostly just to generate Energy. It is not a major damage source.

Skill – String Sings Slow Swirls

After using her Skill, Ruan Mei gains the Overtone buff for 3 turns. While Overtone is active, all allies deal more DMG and their Weakness Break Efficiency increases. This is her core buff. You want Overtone up as much as possible. The Skill also generates 30 Energy, making it important for her rotation.

Ultimate – Petals to Stream, Repose in Dream (130 Energy)

Ruan Mei deploys a field lasting 2 turns. Allies inside the field gain All-Type RES PEN, which bypasses enemy resistance. Any enemy hit inside the field receives the Thanatoplum Rebloom debuff. When that enemy tries to recover from Weakness Break, the debuff triggers — delaying their next action and dealing additional Break DMG. This is a huge benefit for any team that breaks enemy shields regularly.

Talent – Somatotypical Helix

This passive does two things. First, it increases the SPD of all allies by 10% (except Ruan Mei herself). Second, when any ally breaks an enemy’s Weakness, Ruan Mei deals bonus Ice Break DMG to that enemy. The SPD buff is always active — it can push teammates over important SPD breakpoints without needing extra SPD substats on them.

A2, A4, and A6 Traces

• A2 – Inert Respiration: Increases Break Effect by 20% for all allies. Free and always on.
• A4 – Days Wane, Thoughts Wax: Ruan Mei regenerates 5 Energy at the start of her turn. Helps with Ultimate uptime.
• A6 – Candle Lights on Still Waters: For every 10% Break Effect above 120%, her Skill increases allies’ DMG by an extra 6%, up to +36%. This is why stacking high Break Effect is so valuable.

Ruan Mei Trace Priority

Focus on her most impactful abilities first. Here is the recommended upgrade order:

• 1st – Skill: Raises the Overtone DMG buff and Weakness Break Efficiency boost.
• 2nd – Ultimate: Increases RES PEN and Break DMG from Thanatoplum Rebloom.
• 3rd – Talent: Improves the bonus Ice Break DMG she deals when allies break an enemy.
• 4th – Basic ATK: Low priority. Upgrade last.

Always unlock all Major Traces (A2, A4, A6) — they are critical to her performance and relatively cheap to activate.

Best Light Cones for Ruan Mei (4.3)

1. Past Self in Mirror (Signature – Best Option)

This is Ruan Mei’s own signature Light Cone. It gives her a massive 60% Break Effect boost, which helps her reach the 180% target. After she uses her Ultimate, all allies deal more DMG for 3 turns. If she has 150%+ Break Effect, it also recovers a Skill Point. On top of that, it regenerates 10 Energy for all allies at the start of each combat wave. It checks every box for her kit and has no competition for the top slot.

2. Memories of the Past (4-Star – Best F2P Energy Option)

A strong 4-star alternative. It provides 56% Break Effect plus bonus Energy when she attacks. This allows Ruan Mei to maintain a consistent 3-turn Ultimate rotation, meaning her buffs stay active more often. If you do not have her signature, this is the recommended pick for most players.

3. In Pursuit of the Wind (Best F2P Speed Option)

This Light Cone gives a useful SPD boost and increases DMG dealt by all allies after Ruan Mei uses her Skill. It is the current best option if you want to prioritize Speed for your rotation. Great for players who are not using the other two options above.

4. But the Battle Isn’t Over (5-Star Alternative)

Provides 10% Energy Regeneration Rate and reliable Skill Point recovery. Solid for maintaining buff uptime but falls behind the signature and even Memories of the Past in most scenarios.

5. Meshing Cogs (3-Star – Budget Pick)

Free from the shop and provides bonus Energy on attacks. It helps with Ultimate uptime on a budget. Not ideal for endgame but perfectly usable while you farm for better options.

Best Relics for Ruan Mei (4.3)

Best Relic Set: Watchmaker, Master of Dream Machinations (4-Piece)

This is the clear best-in-slot set for Ruan Mei in patch 4.3. The 2-piece bonus gives +16% Break Effect. The 4-piece bonus is the real prize: when Ruan Mei uses her Ultimate, all allies gain +30% Break Effect for 2 turns. This stacks beautifully with her kit and turns her whole team into a Weakness Break machine. There is no better alternative for a Break-focused build.

Alternative: Messenger Traversing Hackerspace (4-Piece)

The 2-piece gives +6% SPD and the 4-piece grants +12% SPD to all allies for one turn when she uses her Ultimate. If your team does not need Break Effect buffs and you want more Speed for faster cycles, this is a decent swap. It also works as a 2-piece if you are mixing sets.

2-Piece Mix Option

If your Watchmaker pieces have poor substats, you can run 2-piece Watchmaker and 2-piece Messenger for +16% Break Effect and +6% SPD. This is a fine middle ground until you get better pieces.

Best Planar Ornaments for Ruan Mei (4.3)

Best: Sprightly Vonwacq

This is the top pick for almost every team. It gives Energy Regeneration Rate from the 2-piece bonus. More importantly, if her SPD reaches 120 or above at the start of battle, it advances her action forward — letting her apply buffs before her allies act. Getting Ruan Mei to move first is a big deal for buff uptime.

Alternative: Talia: Kingdom of Banditry

Gives a flat Break Effect boost. Good if you are struggling to hit the 180% Break Effect target and do not need the Energy Regen from Vonwacq. Worth using if your Link Rope is not on Energy Regen.

Alternative: Broken Keel

Boosts the team’s Crit DMG when Ruan Mei’s Effect RES is 30%+. Useful in non-Break teams where your DPS cares more about Crit than Break. Pairs well with characters like Jingliu or Blade.

Relic Main Stats and Substats

Here is exactly what to look for on each relic piece:

• Head: HP (fixed)
• Hands: ATK (fixed)
• Body: HP% or DEF% (she does not need Crit or ATK%)
• Feet: SPD (always)
• Planar Sphere: HP% or DEF%
• Link Rope: Break Effect% if you need more, or Energy Regeneration Rate% if you already have 150%+ Break Effect

Substat priority: Break Effect% → SPD → HP% → DEF%

Your two key stat targets are 180%+ Break Effect and 134+ SPD. The A6 Trace rewards you heavily for stacking Break Effect above 120%, so pushing it as high as possible is always worth the investment.

Best Teams for Ruan Mei (4.3)

Ruan Mei is most powerful in Break-focused teams, but her universal buffs make her work in other compositions too.

Super Break Team (Best in Slot)

This is her highest-performing setup in patch 4.3. Combine Ruan Mei with Firefly, Harmony Trailblazer, and Gallagher. The Harmony Trailblazer’s Super Break mechanic deals massive extra damage every time an enemy is in Weakness Break. Ruan Mei extends the Break window and boosts Break Efficiency, making this one of the highest damage teams in the game.

Rappa Break Team

Pair Ruan Mei with Rappa, Fugue, and Lingsha. Rappa hits multiple enemies and constantly procs Weakness Breaks. Ruan Mei extends the Break duration and boosts Rappa’s damage significantly. Fugue adds more Break support. This team dominates multi-enemy encounters in Memory of Chaos.

DoT Team

Use Ruan Mei alongside Kafka, Black Swan, and Huohuo. Ruan Mei’s RES PEN buff applies to DoT damage too, making her a strong choice in this team. She does not contribute Break specifically here, but her DMG% and RES PEN still improve total damage output significantly.

Non-Break DPS Team

Ruan Mei can also work alongside strong DPS characters like Jingliu, Blade, or Seele. Her SPD buff, DMG% bonus, and RES PEN provide real value even outside Break teams. For non-Break DPS lineups, a Broken Keel Ornament setup is worth considering.

Ruan Mei Eidolons – Are They Worth It?

Ruan Mei is completely functional at E0, but her Eidolons are some of the best in the game if you want to invest further.

• E1 – Best Stopping Point: While her Ultimate field is active, all allies ignore 20% of the enemy’s DEF. This DEF ignore applies to every damage type and is multiplicative with other buffs. It is a major power spike and the most cost-effective Eidolon to chase.
• E2: When allies deal damage to enemies in Weakness Break, all allies gain +40% ATK. Solid passive but harder to consistently trigger in all scenarios.
• E4: When an enemy’s Weakness is Broken, Ruan Mei’s Break Effect increases by 40% for 3 turns. Helps her hit high Break Effect thresholds more easily.
• E6: Extends the Ultimate field duration by 1 turn and increases the Talent’s Break DMG multiplier by 200%. This is a massive upgrade for dedicated Break teams but requires heavy investment.

For most players, E0 or E1 is the sweet spot. Chasing E2 and beyond is only worth it if you are a devoted Ruan Mei main.

Ruan Mei Rotation and Gameplay Tips

Her basic rotation is simple once you understand the Energy math. Here is how to play her efficiently:

• Use the Technique before battle — it auto-triggers the Skill at the start of combat, giving you the Overtone buff for free without spending a Skill Point.
• In battle, use the Skill whenever Overtone is about to expire. Keep it active at all times.
• Use the Ultimate as soon as it is available. Her 130 Energy cost means you need either an Energy Regen Light Cone or Rope to maintain a 3-turn rotation.
• She generates 30 Energy from Skill, 20 from Basic ATK, and 5 from her A4 Trace per turn. With Energy Regen Rope or Memories of the Past, a 3-turn Ultimate cycle is achievable.
• In Simulated Universe, her Technique makes every enemy count as a Weakness target — very powerful for exploration.

How to Get Ruan Mei

Ruan Mei is a limited 5-star character. She was first released in Version 1.6 and has had reruns since. She is not available on the standard banner. To fully ascend and unlock all Traces, you will need the following materials:

• Ascension Materials: Dream Flieger (from Xianzhou Luofu boss) and standard Trace materials from Calyx stages.
