She’s a Memokeeper from the Garden of Recollection who perceives reality through the lens of accumulated memory and regret — and on the battlefield, that philosophy translates into one of the most unique damage systems in HSR. Her entire kit revolves around stacking Arcana on enemies: a special Wind DoT that compounds in strength the higher the stack count goes. The more Arcana, the harder every tick hits.
She first appeared in Version 2.1 and was already strong, but her Version 4.0 Novaflare rework took her from great to genuinely exceptional. The changes solved her biggest frustrations — Arcana stacks no longer reset to 1 on damage, Epiphany’s vulnerability now applies permanently rather than only during enemy turns, and her DEF shred became universal across her entire kit. Black Swan Novaflare Changes — What Actually Changed
Before diving into the build, it’s worth understanding exactly what the Novaflare update did, because it fundamentally changed how she plays.
The old Black Swan had a brutal problem: when Arcana dealt damage at the start of a turn, her stacks reset to 1. All that patient stack building — gone in one tick. Entire rotations could feel like running on a treadmill. The rework fixed this. Now Arcana stacks are only halved when damage triggers, not reset. That means 50 stacks becomes 25 after a proc, not 1. You get back to high stack counts dramatically faster.
Arcana can also now overcap beyond 50 stacks — excess stacks get consumed when damage is dealt. Basic ATK – Karmic Wind
Deals Wind DMG to a single target at 100% ATK. After the Novaflare rework, it also has a 100% base chance to apply the 20.8% DEF reduction on the target for 3 turns. It used to be pure filler but now it actually contributes meaningful debuffing even on turns when you can’t Skill. Regenerates 20 Energy.
Skill – Mind Poisoner
Deals Wind DMG at 90% ATK to the target and adjacent enemies, and applies 1 stack of Arcana to the target with a 100% base chance. Also applies the 20.8% DEF reduction for 3 turns. The adjacent AoE splash means Arcana spreads outward from your primary target, which in multi-enemy content lets you build stacks across the whole field simultaneously. Skill is the primary way to manage where and how fast Arcana builds.
Ultimate – Bliss of Otherworldly Cuisine
Deals Wind AoE DMG equal to 120% of ATK to all enemies and applies the Epiphany state for 2 turns. In its post-Novaflare form, Epiphany now makes enemies take 25% increased damage at all times — not just during their turns. When an enemy in Epiphany takes damage at the start of a turn, Arcana stacks are no longer reset (in the old version this was a one-time protection; post-rework the retention mechanic is built into the base Arcana system itself). The Ultimate is also now a vector for applying DEF shred universally. Try to keep Epiphany active as consistently as possible — it’s a permanent 25% damage amplifier for your whole team on those targets.
Talent – Loom of Fate’s Caprice
This is the heart of the Arcana engine. Whenever any enemy receives a DoT effect at the start of a turn, there’s a 65% chance they gain 1 stack of Arcana. Once stacked, Arcana deals Wind DoT at the start of every enemy turn — with each stack increasing the damage multiplier by 12% up to 50 stacks (70 at E6). At 50 stacks that’s a 600% total multiplier on top of the base 240% ATK, creating absolutely enormous damage numbers in longer fights. When Arcana has 3 or more stacks, it also splashes Wind DMG to adjacent enemies with a chance to spread more Arcana. This adjacency spread is what makes Black Swan terrifying in Pure Fiction.
Technique – Dreamscape
Before combat, Black Swan enters a special state where touching enemies inflicts them with Arcana at the start of the next battle. Enter fights with this active whenever you can — it front-loads your stack count from turn one and gives you a meaningful head start before any DoT has even ticked.

Best 4-Piece Set – Prisoner in Deep Confinement
This is the undisputed best relic set for Black Swan and it isn’t close. The 2-piece gives 12% ATK. The 4-piece is the real prize: for every DoT currently on the enemy, Black Swan ignores 6% of their DEF when dealing damage, stacking up to 3 DoTs for 18% total DEF ignore from the set alone. Since Black Swan’s kit already stacks DEF reduction through her Skill and Basic ATK, and her Reforged Remembrance adds another layer, the total DEF ignore in a fully built team approaches near-complete DEF penetration. Even if your Prisoner pieces aren’t perfectly rolled, the 4-piece bonus is so powerful that you should never swap it out for sub-optimal pieces from another set.
Alternative – 4-Piece Pioneer Diver of Dead Waters
The second-best option. Pioneer increases CRIT Rate by 4% per debuff on the enemy (up to 3 stacks, so 12% total), and CRIT hits on debuffed enemies grant extra CRIT DMG (up to 36%). It requires building CRIT stats alongside EHR and SPD, which is a more demanding substat budget. Only recommended if you have exceptional Pioneer pieces and poor Prisoner ones. Advances Black Swan’s action forward by 25% after she uses her Ultimate. Primarily a quality-of-life set that helps maintain Epiphany uptime through faster Ultimate cycling. Less raw damage than Prisoner but smoother gameplay in teams where Epiphany falling off is a meaningful concern.
Best Planar Ornament – Revelry by the Seas
The new BiS Planar Ornament for Black Swan after Novaflare. The 2-piece bonus increases DoT DMG directly — which is Black Swan’s entire identity. If you can reach 120% EHR without relying on the Effect Hit Rate from Pan-Galactic, Revelry is the clear winner and provides a meaningful DPS boost over alternatives. This is the ornament to farm towards.
Alternative Planar Ornament – Pan-Galactic Commercial Enterprise
If you’re still building EHR and need help hitting the 120% threshold, Pan-Galactic is the answer. It gives 10% Effect Hit Rate as a 2-piece bonus and converts your EHR into ATK at 25% of your EHR value. The ATK conversion scales her Arcana damage while the EHR boost helps land debuffs reliably. Use this while you’re gearing up or if your relic substats don’t have enough EHR to hit 120% without it.
Alternative Planar Ornament – Firmament Frontline: Glamoth
Gives 12% ATK as a 2-piece and increases DMG by 18% when SPD hits 135 (or 24% at 160). A solid option if you’ve invested heavily in SPD and want a consistent flat damage increase without needing to manage EHR thresholds. Works well alongside speed-focused builds.

- Effect Hit Rate — Hit 120% total. This is your highest priority. This stat does triple duty: reliable debuffs, personal damage, and teamwide amplification.
- SPD — More turns means more Arcana applications and faster Epiphany cycling. Hit 135 SPD to activate Firmament if you’re using that ornament, or just stack as much as substats allow.

In combat, for every different DoT type on the enemy (Wind Shear, Burn, Shock, Bleed), Black Swan gains 1 stack of Prophet, up to 4 stacks. Each stack increases her ATK by 5% and causes her DoT to ignore 7.2% more DEF per stack. At full 4-stack uptime that’s 20% ATK and 28.8% DEF ignore from the Light Cone alone — combine this with Prisoner’s 18% DEF ignore and her Skill’s 20.8% DEF reduction and you’re looking at near-total DEF penetration. The synergy with mixed DoT teams (Fire, Lightning, Wind, Bleed) is exceptional.
Best 5-Star Alternative – Solitary Healing
A Nihility 5-star that increases Break Effect and DoT damage. Less tailored to Black Swan than her signature but provides a solid DoT DMG multiplier and Break Effect that can enable Quantum Entanglement in certain team compositions. A decent option if you have it from other characters.
Best 4-Star – Eyes of the Prey
At maximum superimposition (S5), Eyes of the Prey gives 24% Effect Hit Rate and a substantial DoT DMG bonus. It requires multiple copies which can be expensive, but at S5 it genuinely competes with Solitary Healing for the second slot in the Light Cone hierarchy. Even at lower superimpositions it’s a solid pick since every point of EHR feeds directly into her teamwide damage buff. Pick this up from the Warp pool whenever you can.
Other Viable Options
- Good Night and Sleep Well (4-star) — Increases DMG dealt against debuffed enemies by up to 24% at S5. Since Arcana is itself a debuff and Black Swan stacks multiple Bugs worth of debuffs, this condition is always met. A solid choice for players who want damage over EHR.
- Resolution Shines as Pearls of Sweat (4-star) — Applies Ensnare to enemies, reducing their DEF. An extra DEF shred layer on top of her existing kit. More situational but effective in teams where extra DEF reduction pushes damage significantly.
Black Swan Best Team Comps in 4.3
Premium DoT Core – The Best Team in the Game for DoT
This is the team that currently pushes 39,000+ Pure Fiction scores in Black Swan comps. Kafka detonates DoTs immediately when enemies take damage — which means every Arcana tick from Black Swan’s Talent becomes an instant on-demand trigger through Kafka’s follow-up. Hysilens added a new layer of DoT stacking to this archetype and accelerates Arcana dramatically. Huohuo keeps the team alive while also generating Energy for the whole party — which keeps both Black Swan and Kafka’s Ultimates cycling fast. This is the pinnacle DoT setup.
Kafka + Ruan Mei Variation
The classic DoT team that was best-in-class before Hysilens arrived. Ruan Mei extends enemy Weakness Break states and adds Break DMG amplification, which synergises surprisingly well with DoT since both mechanics benefit from enemies staying in Broken states longer. She also provides a flat DMG% buff and SPD boost to the team. This is the go-to second setup for players who don’t have Hysilens and is still excellent across both Memory of Chaos and Pure Fiction.
Acheron Debuff Team
Post-Novaflare, Black Swan can now function as a support in non-DoT teams too. Pela provides DEF shred to compensate for the missing Ruan Mei, and Gallagher handles healing. Works well in lower-difficulty content and story.
Black Swan Eidolons – Are They Worth It?
Black Swan at E0 is already a top-tier DoT unit after the Novaflare rework. Her Eidolons are strong, and E1 in particular is a standout investment.
- E1: The best and most impactful Eidolon for DoT teams. While Black Swan is on the field, enemies afflicted with Wind Shear, Bleed, Burn, or Shock have their corresponding Elemental RES reduced by 25%. This is a passive, unconditional, permanent 25% RES shred on all those DoT types for your entire team — meaning Kafka’s Shock damage, Hysilens’ Fire DoT, and Black Swan’s own Wind Arcana all hit harder simultaneously. E1 is considered one of the highest-value first Eidolons in the entire game for players who run DoT teams.
- E2: When enemies enter combat, they’re immediately inflicted with 30 stacks of Arcana with a 100% base chance. Also, enemies in Epiphany take 20% increased damage. Starting fights with 30 free Arcana stacks is enormous — it completely eliminates the ramp-up phase and means your first Arcana tick hits for near-peak damage. A massive improvement for boss fights and difficult Memory of Chaos stages.
- E4: After the rework, E4 now increases DMG taken by enemies under Epiphany state and regenerates 8 Energy per turn or when enemies are defeated. The Energy generation makes Ultimate cycling smoother and maintains Epiphany uptime more consistently.
- E6: Increases the maximum Arcana stack cap by 20, from 50 to 70. Also makes her Arcana application partially guaranteed when stacking. The increased cap means longer fights — particularly multi-stage MoC bosses — see dramatically higher sustained damage. Very powerful but very expensive.
Black Swan Trace and Ability Priority
Level her Skill first — it’s her primary Arcana applicator and the DEF reduction scales with Skill level. Then level her Talent for higher Arcana DoT damage per stack. Ultimate goes next to improve Epiphany uptime and the AoE hit multiplier. Basic ATK stays at level 1. Unlock all Bonus Traces immediately — the A4 and A6 Traces are critical since A6 specifically converts her EHR into a teamwide DMG bonus, which is one of her most powerful post-Novaflare contributions.
How to Play Black Swan – Tips and Tricks
The most important thing to understand about Black Swan is that her damage is ramping, not burst. The first 2–3 turns of a fight feel weak because Arcana stacks are still building. Don’t panic. Once stacks hit 20–30+, the numbers start to look absurd. This is why she’s better in longer fights and less effective in very short encounters.
Always use her Technique before tough fights to start with Arcana stacks already on enemies from turn zero. Use the Skill on your primary target to apply the DEF reduction and push Arcana on the most dangerous or highest-priority enemy. Weave Basic ATKs for Energy when you need to cycle your Ultimate faster — post-Novaflare the Basic ATK also applies DEF shred so it’s no longer a pure Energy tool.
In teams with Kafka, watch the rotation carefully. Kafka’s follow-up triggers whenever enemies take DoT damage, which means every Arcana tick becomes a detonation trigger. The key is to make sure Black Swan acts frequently enough to keep DEF reduction and Epiphany active so that Kafka’s follow-ups land on well-debuffed targets. Speed-tune Black Swan to act right before Kafka for maximum impact.
Keep track of Epiphany uptime. The 25% damage vulnerability is permanent on affected enemies but it’s tied to Black Swan’s Ultimate, which needs consistent Energy. If you’re finding Epiphany falling off frequently, look at adding Energy Regeneration on the Link Rope or swapping to a Light Cone that helps with Energy regeneration.
Is Black Swan Still Good in Patch 4.3?
Very much so. Black Swan post-Novaflare is in the best shape she’s ever been. The 50–60% DPS increase from the rework was real, not exaggerated. She appears in the vast majority of successful DoT team compositions and consistently pushes competitive Pure Fiction and Memory of Chaos scores. The key change is the retained Arcana stacks — what used to feel like building sandcastles at high tide now feels like stacking an avalanche. The longer the fight goes, the harder she gets.
