A Bulwark Against Darkness Quest Guide–The Blood of Dawnwalker 2

    TL;DR

    • A Bulwark Against Darkness unlocks after reaching Infamy Level 4 — a mysterious letter is delivered to Coen via Anca or a messenger in Svartrau City.
    • You need four components: Bundle of Silk Threads, Large Lizard’s Moult, Relic of a Saint, and Flask of Quicksilver.
    • Best Relic pick: Saint’s Tibia from the Echoes of Silenced Bells quest — it’s the least useful relic for anything else.
    • Free Silk Threads: Complete the Come Hither Sanzhani quest — the threads are on the ground after you beat the Murohn.
    • Large Lizard’s Moult: Inside a cave west of Maragir Wealds — shimmy through the entrance and kill four Tatselwurms.
    • Flask of Quicksilver: On a table at the top of Aurelius Tower after completing the Home Sweet Home quest.
    • Bring all four to Nareh, the Uriash blacksmith at the Uriashi Hermitage in northwest Briar Sloughs.
    • Survive a ritual fight against wolves and a bear to receive the full Enhanced Arbiter legendary armor set.
    • Reward: 4-piece Legendary armor set + Arbiter’s Regalia achievement/trophy.

The A Bulwark Against Darkness quest in The Blood of Dawnwalker is one of the most rewarding side quests in the whole game. It sends Coen on a cross-map treasure hunt for four rare crafting materials, and the payoff is a full Legendary Arbiter armor set that covers chest, bracers, shin guards, and boots all at once. No other quest hands you a complete four-piece Legendary loadout in a single run. This guide covers how to trigger it, where every component is, and how to handle the final forge.

Before you get started, check out our Finders Keepers quest guide — the Cursed Chasm rewards you with silver loot and the Durandal sword right in the same region. If you’re new to Vale Sangora, our Blood of Dawnwalker prologue walkthrough is a good place to start.

How to Start A Bulwark Against Darkness

This quest does not start from a map marker or a fixed NPC. It arrives as a letter. Here is when and how it triggers:

    • Reach Infamy Level 4 (Notorious tier) by sabotaging the operations of Ambrus, Bakir, and Xanthe through Court Activities.
    • Once you hit that tier and the edict cutscene plays, travel to the Crossroads Inn where Anca stays. She will tell you a messenger left a letter for Coen. Alternatively, a mysterious stranger may approach you in Svartrau City to hand it over directly.
    • Open your inventory, find the letter under Books and Notes (it will have an orange background like other quest items), and read it.
    • Then read the List of Armour Components also in your inventory — this officially starts the quest and shows you what to find.

The letter is from a mysterious benefactor who wants to help Coen bring down Brencis. It names the four components needed and points you toward Nareh, the Uriash Hermit blacksmith in the northwestern hinterlands. If you completed the Forge It Anew quest, you already know Nareh — she’s the same blacksmith who helps you reforge St. Mihai’s Silver Sword.

Note: You can collect all four components before the letter arrives. The items can be picked up during other quests and stored in your inventory. The moment you read the letter, already-collected components are automatically counted.

    All Four Component Locations

Here is where to find every item, with the cheapest and fastest method listed first for each one.

    1. Relic of a Saint

This is not a single specific item — you just need any one qualifying relic. Several exist in the game. Here are your options:

    • Saint’s Tibia (recommended): Found during the Echoes of Silenced Bells quest. As you explore St. Tyna’s Convent, look for the area west of the central compound near the zombie nuns. There is a ladder — descend to the bottom and loot the corpse there to find the Saint’s Tibia. This is the best one to use for the quest because it has no other worthwhile purpose. It keeps the more useful Relic of St. Tyna free to be worn as an accessory.
    • Relic of St. Tyna: Also found in the Echoes of Silenced Bells quest, behind a locked door inside St. Tyna’s Convent. This is a decent accessory — consider keeping it and using the Saint’s Tibia instead.
    • Relic of St. Dasius: Found in Xanthe’s manor, Howling Keep, during The Cycle of Love quest. You can also buy it from the merchant Vicho after completing his questline.

Important: If you gave away your relic during the optional Most Precious Thing quest, you will need to track down the Relic of St. Dasius as a backup.

    2. Bundle of Silk Threads

There are two ways to get this. One costs money, one is completely free. Always go for the free one.

    • Free method – Come Hither quest: This is part of the Letters to Lunka quest chain. Head east of the Silty Mug Inn Shrine in The Silts region. Find the Sanzhani near the two large leafless trees. Help her by dropping into the cave below and killing the Murohn that took over her burrow. Once the Murohn is dead, look around the cave floor — a Bundle of Silk Threads is sitting there at no cost. Take it.
    • Paid method – Sanzhani trader: If you’ve already completed the Pearly and Precious quest (another Sanzhani quest), a Sanzhani merchant is now active near the Small Bridge Shrine in Briar Sloughs. She sells Silk Threads for around 5,750 to 6,500 Denarii depending on sources. That’s a lot of coin — only go this route if you’ve already done Come Hither and somehow missed the free threads.

    3. Large Lizard’s Moult

This one is hidden and the cave entrance is easy to miss without a guide.

    • Fast travel to the Muddy Trail point in the swampy area west of Maragir Wealds. If you completed The Bittersweet Toast quest, you’ll recognise this swamp — the lizard Vera was hunting before she died was in this area. That quest is not required, but the location will feel familiar.
    • From the ritual site in the swamp, head southeast and follow the path until it ends. You will find a small pond with a cave entrance nearby. The cave entrance is narrow — you have to shimmy through it.
    • Inside, defeat four Tatselwurm enemies. They’re tough lizard-type creatures, so be prepared.
    • The Large Lizard’s Moult is on the ground at the back of the cave. Loot it and leave.

The cave is also directly south of the witchcraft vendor Vera in the Briar Sloughs region, which is another useful landmark to orient yourself.

    4. Flask of Quicksilver

This is the hardest item to get because it requires completing a full quest first.

    • Head to Aurelius Tower, located in the south of The Silts region. You can find it south of the Turtle Rock Shrine.
    • Enter the tower and interact with the door at the top floor — this triggers the Home Sweet Home quest (found under Xanthe’s Court Orders). You get pulled into a time loop dream sequence.
    • Inside the dream, you must fight through enemies and help a priest recall what happened by interacting with the correct people in Focus Mode in the right order: Alin → Esme → Coen. This opens a locked door in the church leading to another portal. Inspect the glowing red tree stump, then follow the path to finish the sequence.
    • After the Home Sweet Home quest ends and Coen wakes up, go back up to the top floor of Aurelius Tower. The Flask of Quicksilver is sitting on a table in the room you were previously blocked from entering.

Tip: Come back to grab the Flask right after the quest completes. Don’t fast travel away and forget — the item just sits on the table waiting for you.

How to Hand In Components and Forge the Arbiter Set

Once you have all four components, head to Nareh at the Uriashi Hermitage in northwest Briar Sloughs, north of Parlita in the mountain hinterlands. She’s at the Uriashi Hermitage Shrine — if you completed Forge It Anew, the map marker is already familiar.

You can hand over components one at a time as you collect them. Each piece you hand in earns you one Epic Arbiter armor piece immediately. So there’s no need to wait until you have all four — drop in after each pickup if you want to gear up faster.

When you give Nareh all four components, she says the armor isn’t complete yet. A ritual must be performed — this costs 3 Time Segments, so plan your day around it.

The Final Ritual – What to Expect

When the ritual begins, enemies attack the forge. You have to defend Nareh while she works. Here is what you face:

    • First wave: a pack of wolves
    • Second wave: a powerful bear (the Ursine Apparition — hits much harder than standard wildlife)

Fight with your back to the forge structure and deal with wolves in groups before they surround you. Once the wolves are down, focus everything on the bear. The bear is the real threat — stay mobile and use your best abilities. If you have Durandal from the Cursed Chasm, its bonus damage against animals makes both waves noticeably easier.

Survive the ritual and A Bulwark Against Darkness is complete.

Arbiter Armor Set – All Rewards

Completing the ritual hands you all four pieces of the full Enhanced Armour of the Arbiter set at once. Here is every piece and its main stat bonuses:

    • Enhanced Armour of the Arbiter (heavy chestpiece) — Weapon damage, claw damage, witchcraft ability damage, AC restoration on actions
    • Enhanced Shin Guards of the Arbiter (heavy trousers) — Witchcraft ability cooldown, AC restoration passive, AC restoration on actions, AC restoration on perfect blocks
    • Enhanced Bracers of the Arbiter (heavy bracers) — Maximum vampiric health, vampiric health segment regeneration, blood drinking restoration, weapon damage
    • Enhanced Boots of the Arbiter (heavy boots) — Maximum human health, human health restoration, maximum stamina, magical damage reduction

The base armor also gives Melee damage +6%, Claw damage +6%, Witchcraft damage +6%, and Focus charge regeneration +6%, all of which scale up significantly as you level the pieces. This is one of the strongest gear sets in the game and covers both human and vampire form stats — making it useful in almost every situation.

You also unlock the Arbiter’s Regalia achievement/trophy on completion.

Tips for A Bulwark Against Darkness

    • Use Saint’s Tibia, not the Relic of St. Tyna. The Tibia is useless as an accessory. The Relic is not. Keep the Relic equipped for its stats and sacrifice the Tibia to Nareh.
    • Do Come Hither before spending Denarii on Silk Threads. The free Bundle from the Murohn cave saves you up to 6,500 Denarii. Always grab it this way unless you’ve already run that quest without picking up the threads.
    • Don’t sell items with these exact names. Large Lizard’s Moult, Bundle of Silk Threads, Relic of a Saint, Flask of Quicksilver — do not sell these to any merchant. Replacing them is either expensive or quest-locked.
    • Hand in components early. Each delivery gives you an Epic Arbiter piece. You can use those pieces mid-game while you gather the remaining materials.
    • Save before the ritual. The final fight costs 3 Time Segments regardless. If you fail, you lose that time. Save first so you can retry from the same point.
    • Nareh also forges the Arbiter’s Blade. If you’ve completed the Forge It Anew quest, you know this already. Pairing the Arbiter sword with the Arbiter armor makes for one of the strongest full builds in the game.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you start A Bulwark Against Darkness in Blood of Dawnwalker?

You need to reach Infamy Level 4 (Notorious tier). After that, visit Anca at the Crossroads Inn — she’ll tell you a letter arrived for Coen. Alternatively, a stranger may hand you the letter in Svartrau City. Read the letter and the accompanying List of Armour Components from your inventory to officially begin the quest.

Where are all four Arbiter armor components?

The Saint’s Tibia is found on a corpse below a ladder in St. Tyna’s Convent during Echoes of Silenced Bells. The free Bundle of Silk Threads is on the cave floor after you kill the Murohn during the Come Hither Sanzhani quest. The Large Lizard’s Moult is inside a narrow cave west of Maragir Wealds — kill four Tatselwurms and loot it from the back. The Flask of Quicksilver is on a table at the top of Aurelius Tower after completing the Home Sweet Home quest.

Who forges the Arbiter armor in Blood of Dawnwalker?

Nareh, the Uriash Hermit blacksmith at the Uriashi Hermitage in northwest Briar Sloughs. She’s the same NPC who reforges St. Mihai’s Silver Sword during the Forge It Anew quest. You can hand in components one by one — each delivery earns you one Epic Arbiter piece before the final ritual upgrades everything to Legendary.

What do you fight in the A Bulwark Against Darkness ritual?

After you hand Nareh all four components, the ritual triggers a fight. You face a pack of wolves first, followed by a powerful bear called the Ursine Apparition. The ritual costs 3 Time Segments. Survive both waves and you receive the full four-piece Enhanced Arbiter Legendary armor set plus the Arbiter’s Regalia achievement.
