TL;DR
- There are 207 pets in AION 2: 41 Cogni, 65 Fera, 48 Natura, 46 Varian, and 7 Special.
- Every pet also works as a mount.
- Each pet needs 5 Souls to unlock. Souls drop from matching monsters in the open world.
- Pets that cannot be farmed from monsters are obtained via Reward Chests or Black Cloud Merchants.
- Your first pet comes from the Episode quest at Level 10 — choose between Fossa, Armadon, or Tog.
- Every pet you collect adds to Genus Insight, a permanent passive stat system tied to pet type.
- Special pets like Pagati, Black Dragon, Swift Lugi, and others come from shops, passes, and events only.
How the Pet System Works in AION 2
In AION 2, pets are not just cosmetic companions — they are a core progression system. Every pet you collect feeds into the Genus Insight system, which gives your character permanent passive stat bonuses. Pets also serve as mounts, so there is no separate mount list. Your pet is your ride.
Your pet collection is account-wide on a server. Every character on your account benefits from your collection progress, and the highest Genus Insight level reached by any character applies to all of them.
To unlock any pet, you need exactly 5 Pet Souls — no exceptions. Souls are separate items that drop from matching monsters in the open world. Some pets have no monster source and can only be obtained through Reward Chests or the Black Cloud Merchants shop.
For a deeper look at unlocking pets efficiently, see our AION 2 How to Get Pets Fast guide.
AION 2 Pet Types: Genus Stat Bonuses
There are five pet genera in AION 2. Each one contributes different passive stats to your character through the Genus Insight system as you collect and max pets in that category.
- Cogni (41 pets) — HP +10/+20/+30, Critical Hit +1/+2, Might +1
- Fera (65 pets) — Ground Mount Speed +1/+2/+3, Accuracy Bonus +1/+2, Dexterity +1
- Natura (48 pets) — Stamina +3/+6/+9, Critical Hit Resist +1/+2, Precision +1
- Varian (46 pets) — Sprint Stamina Cost Reduction, Evasion Bonus +1/+2, Constitution +1
- Special (7 pets) — Unique acquisition. Counted separately from the main four genera.
If you want raw movement speed from your mount, Fera is the genus to prioritize. If you want HP and offensive stats, Cogni is the priority. Natura helps sustain your sprinting and riding, while Varian reduces how fast you drain sprint stamina on a mount.
Your First Pet: The Level 10 Episode Quest
The pet system unlocks when you complete the All Geared Up quest in Episode 1, which becomes available around Level 10. This quest rewards you with a starter pet of your choice. The three options are:
- Fossa — Fera type. Good for players who want ground speed from their mount early.
- Armadon — Fera type. Another solid early Fera pet.
- Tog — Fera type. Same genus, different look.
All three are Fera pets, so they contribute to your Fera Genus Insight from day one. Pick whichever design appeals to you — the stat contribution is the same across all three.

All Special Pets in AION 2
Special pets cannot be obtained through monster farming or standard Reward Chests. Each one has a unique, specific source. Here is every Special pet and how to get it:
- Pagati — Purchase for 2,000,000 Kina (Bound) from the Tsenka Merchants, or obtain via the Advance: Pet Chest. Also available as a pre-registration reward.
- Black Dragon — Obtained via the Daeva’s Chest of Might.
- White Dragon — Special acquisition source (event/chest).
- Swift Lugi — Reward from the Daeva Pass Season 1 progression track.
- Wandering Merchant Lugi — Purchase from the Shugo Festival Pets Trade Shop.
- White Bunny — Purchase from the Atelier Shop.
- Chonky Hamster — Purchase from the Atelier Shop.
Special pets are cosmetic prestige items. They are not eligible for Pet Transformation (which requires regular Cogni, Fera, Natura, or Varian pets at maximum level).

Cogni pets give HP, Critical Hit, and Might bonuses through Genus Insight. They are mostly humanoid creature types — Krall soldiers, Manduri warriors, and similar. Many can be farmed from open-world monsters. A handful are chest-only or Black Cloud Merchant exclusives.

How to Obtain Pets: All Methods
Farm Pet Souls from Monsters
This is the primary method for the majority of pets. Kill the matching monster type until you have 5 souls. Each kill can drop soul points as ground pickups. To find exactly where a specific pet’s monster spawns, open the Pets menu, click the pet you want, and go to the Source tab — it shows a map pin pointing directly to the spawn location.
Reward Chests
Every regular pet can also be unlocked from various Reward Chests. The main chest types are:
- Mysterious Pet Chest (Bound) — Random pet from any genus.
- Growth Pet Chest (Bound) — Random pet, often with better drop weights.
- Pet Chest: Cogni / Fera / Natura / Varian (Bound) — Genre-specific chests that guarantee a pet from that type.
- Pet Soul Chest: [Type] — Gives soul items for a specific genus.
- Market Popularity Rank 1 Celebration Pet Chest — Event chest.
- Advance: Pet Chest — Launch/early access exclusive.
Duplicate pet items from chests are not wasted. A duplicate automatically converts into one soul for that pet, which counts toward the 5-soul requirement.
Black Cloud Merchants
The Black Cloud Merchants sell a rotating selection of pets directly. This includes pets that have no monster soul source — the only way to get some rarer pets is through this shop or chests. Check the shop regularly since its stock changes.
Quests and Events
Some pets are tied to specific quests, events, or achievements. Pagati, for example, is available from the Tsenka Merchants for 2,000,000 Kinah and was a pre-registration reward. Event-tied pets like the Market Popularity chest pets cycle in and out of availability.
Daeva Pass and Shops
Swift Lugi is earned through the Season 1 Daeva Pass track. Wandering Merchant Lugi comes from the Shugo Festival shop. White Bunny and Chonky Hamster are available from the Atelier Shop. These are the premium sources that sit outside the standard farming loop.
How Genus Insight Works
Genus Insight is the secondary progression layer that sits on top of pet collection. Every pet you unlock and level contributes to your Genus Insight score in its category. Each genus has its own 9-slot analysis wheel. Using Soul Crystals (the guaranteed Hidden Cube reward), you can analyze slots on the wheel to roll stat bonuses for your character.
Each analysis rolls a random effect from a table of possible values across rarity tiers. Every re-analysis randomizes all unlocked effects in that genus again, so it is possible to improve or lose existing bonuses. The goal is to fill as many Genus Insight slots as possible with high-rarity effects.
The practical priority for Genus Insight farming:
- Unlock several different species first rather than maxing one pet. The first 5 souls unlock a pet and give its first Owned Effect plus 500 Genus Insight EXP.
- Spread your farming across all four regular genera to keep all Genus Insight boards progressing simultaneously.
- Use Hidden Cube Soul Crystals for Genus Insight Analyzes — each cube gives 1,000 crystals, which pays for 250 Analyzes.
Fully mastering the Genus Insight system earns the Unbound by Genus title, which gives a permanent PvE Damage Boost of +4.5% when equipped. Collecting 200 pet types earns the Rule All Creation title. The pet collection milestone rewards trigger at 5 pets, then every 10 pets after that up to 500.

Best Early Pets to Farm by Faction
Elyos Starting Pets
- Cogni: Klaw — Wandering Klaw (Level 19) at Destroyed Abyss Gate in Verteron.
- Fera: Skyray — Multiple Skyray variants from Level 10 upward in Western Cantas Valley. Many variants drop the same soul.
- Natura: Fungie — Eastern Cantas Valley. Also Agrint as an alternative.
- Varian: Kalgolem or Contaminated Slime — Verteron, accessible early.
Asmodian Starting Pets
- Cogni: Decomposed Lupyllini — Level 10 source in Altgard. Also Manduri Fighter in Black Claw Village.
- Fera: Papis — Early Altgard sources with plenty of spawns throughout the region.
- Natura: Rafflesia — Altgard. One of the most accessible early Natura farms for Asmodians.
- Varian: Swarm — Contaminated Swarms at Level 11+ in Altgard.
Tips for Building Your Pet Collection
- Check the Source tab first: Before farming any pet, open the Pets menu, select the pet, and check the Source tab. It shows exact spawn locations on the map and saves a lot of guesswork.
- Unlock breadth before depth: Getting 5 pets unlocked across different species gives more Genus Insight EXP than maxing one pet to 105 souls straight away.
- Do not discard duplicate pet items: They convert to one soul automatically. Nothing is wasted.
- Collect Hidden Cube Soul Crystals regularly: They fuel Genus Insight Analyzes. 200+ cubes farmed over time is hundreds of analysis rolls.
- Farm souls while doing other content: Monsters that drop pet souls are the same open-world mobs you encounter during questing. Pick up souls passively rather than treating it as a separate dedicated grind session.
- Enemy faction zones through Space-Time Rifts: These open up access to Asmodian zones for Elyos players and vice versa — useful for picking up pet souls from the other faction’s monster types.
