Aleph location in Gothic 1 Remake is inside the Old Mine, northwest of the Old Camp. He is a digger who stole the key to Ulbert’s storage shed, and finding him is the core task in the Ulbert’s Storage Shed side quest. The mine is large and dark, and Aleph is not near the entrance — you need to go several levels deep to reach him. This guide tells you exactly where he is, how to start the quest, and why you should pay him 50 Ore Nuggets instead of 30.
- Aleph is deep inside the Old Mine, northwest of the Old Camp
- He is found in a side tunnel on the upper-middle levels of the mine, near the guarded digger area
- Start the quest by giving Ulbert a beer — he is on the lower levels guarding a storage shed
- Pay Aleph 30 Ore Nuggets for just the key, or 50 Nuggets for the key plus a Ring of Power (+5 Strength)
- Do not report Aleph to Brandik before getting the key — it breaks the quest
- Return to Ulbert, lure him away from the shed, and loot the chests inside
How to Start Ulbert’s Storage Shed Quest
You need to be inside the Old Mine to start this quest. Access to the mine comes through Diego’s quest chain — you visit it during the Test of Faith as part of Old Camp admission. If you have not done that yet, our guide on how to join the Old Camp in Gothic 1 Remake walks through the full process.
Once inside the mine, head down past the upper level merchants Snipes and Aron. Continue deeper into the lower levels. You will find an old miner named Ulbert standing next to a storage shed he is guarding. Talk to him and he will complain about his situation, but he will not open up straight away.
Give Ulbert a Beer First

Ulbert needs a drink before he talks properly. Find a beer inside the mine — they are scattered around and picking them up is not considered stealing, so take as many as you see. Give one to Ulbert and he becomes more cooperative.
He tells you that the key to the storage chests has gone missing and that he suspects a colleague named Aleph took it. This officially starts the Ulbert’s Storage Shed quest.
Where to Find Aleph in the Old Mine

Aleph is in a side tunnel in the upper-middle section of the Old Mine. He is not at the very bottom — he is a few levels down from the entrance, near an area where diggers work under guard.
Here is how to reach him from the mine entrance:
- Enter the Old Mine and head down one level from the entrance
- Look for a tunnel branching off to the right side
- Take that tunnel and descend again
- You will reach a section with miners being watched by two guards
- Aleph is in this area — usually sitting or working on the far side near the ore
If you are coming from the deep levels where Ian is located, Aleph is above that area. Head back up the ladders and ramps from Ian and look for the side passage before you reach the top.
The mine is dark and easy to get lost in. If you do not have a map of the area, take it slow and check every tunnel branching off the main shaft. Our guide on how to get a map in Gothic 1 Remake covers the colony surface map — inside the mine you rely on exploration.
Important Warning Before Talking to Aleph
Do not report Aleph to Brandik before you speak to him about the key. If you tell Brandik what Aleph has done, the dialogue option to buy the key disappears and you cannot complete the quest without loading an earlier save. Talk to Aleph directly and buy the key first — then you can do whatever you want afterward.
How Much to Pay Aleph
When you ask Aleph about the key, he admits he has it but will not hand it over for free. You get three payment options:
- 15 Ore Nuggets: Aleph says his memory is hazy and asks again. This option just wastes ore — avoid it.
- 30 Ore Nuggets: Aleph gives you the chest key. Quest complete, basic outcome.
- 50 Ore Nuggets: Aleph gives you the chest key plus a Ring of Power, which grants +5 Strength when equipped.
Pay 50 Nuggets if you can afford it. The Ring of Power is a strong early-game item and the extra 20 Nuggets are well worth it for a permanent +5 Strength bonus. That stat directly increases your melee damage and helps you meet weapon requirements sooner.
If ore is tight right now, our guide on how to get ore nuggets fast in Gothic 1 Remake can help you top up before making the trip to the mine.
How to Loot the Storage Shed
Once you have the key, return to Ulbert at the storage shed. You need to get him away from the chest before you can loot it. Tell him something that draws him away from his post — say there was no drinking involved and that you found the key yourself. Ulbert believes you and steps away.
With Ulbert out of the way, use the key to open the chests inside the shed. The contents include:
- Light spell scrolls — very useful for exploring dark mine tunnels
- Ore Nuggets
- Food items (beer, apples)
- Iron
- Spell scrolls (varies — can include Firebolt and Fireball scrolls)
The Light scrolls in particular are worth having if you plan to explore more of the mine. Dark tunnels are a constant issue down here. If you want more scrolls in general, our guide on how to get more scrolls in Gothic 1 Remake covers where to find and buy them.

What Happens After You Loot the Shed
After looting the chests, the quest wraps up. The next time you encounter Ulbert standing near Ian, he will mention the missing grilled meat he was expecting. Apologise and he returns to his post without realising what happened. He does not figure out that he was tricked.
The Ring of Power from Aleph can also be sold if you do not need the Strength boost. It fetches a decent price from merchants and is worth around 80 Ore Nuggets if you choose to trade it.
Is This Quest Worth Doing
Yes, for two reasons. First, the Ring of Power alone justifies the trip if you are building a melee character. +5 Strength early on makes weapon requirements easier to hit and raises your damage output in every fight. Second, the spell scrolls inside the chests — especially Light — are genuinely useful during mine exploration and beyond.
The quest also ties naturally into your Old Camp mine visits. Since you are already going deep into the Old Mine for Diego’s Test of Faith, Aleph is right there on the same trip. It costs very little extra time to grab the key and loot the shed while you are already down there.
If you are exploring the Old Mine area and need help with combat, unlocking the dodge roll makes fights in tight spaces much easier. Our guide on how to unlock the dodge roll in Gothic 1 Remake shows how to get it from Buster at the New Camp.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Aleph in Gothic 1 Remake?
Aleph is in a side tunnel in the upper-middle levels of the Old Mine, northwest of the Old Camp. Go down one level from the entrance, take the right-hand tunnel, descend again, and look for him near the guarded digger area on the far side.
How much should you pay Aleph in Gothic 1 Remake?
Pay 50 Ore Nuggets. That gets you the storage shed key plus a Ring of Power that grants +5 Strength. Paying 30 Nuggets only gets you the key. Paying 15 Nuggets accomplishes nothing.
What is in Ulbert’s storage shed in Gothic 1 Remake?
The chests contain Light spell scrolls, Ore Nuggets, food items, iron, and spell scrolls including Firebolt and Fireball variants. The Light scrolls are especially useful for navigating dark areas of the mine.
Can you break the Ulbert’s Storage Shed quest?
Yes. If you report Aleph to Brandik before buying the key from him, the key dialogue disappears and you cannot complete the quest. Always buy the key from Aleph first before doing anything else with that information.
What does the Ring of Power do in Gothic 1 Remake?
The Ring of Power grants +5 Strength when equipped. That bonus increases your melee damage and helps you meet the Strength requirements for better weapons earlier in the game. It is one of the better early-game accessories available.
Do you need to go to the Swamp Camp for this quest?
No. The Ulbert’s Storage Shed quest takes place entirely inside the Old Mine. The only time the Swamp Camp is relevant nearby is if you are also running The Cult’s Recipe for Dexter at the same time. For that trip, our guide on how to reach the Swamp Camp in Gothic 1 Remake covers the route.
