- MW4 launches with 5 SMGs โ a small but competitive pool where every gun has a clear identity.
- The VEL 46 has quietly climbed to the top of the SMG meta with its blazing fire rate and smooth recoil.
- ISO Nightshade is still elite โ one of the best guns in the whole game for close-range aggression.
- X-58 Nyx is the sleeper pick โ built-in suppressor and strong flanking ability make it genuinely underrated.
- PPSh-41 is the fastest-firing gun in MW4, but its post-beta range nerf holds it back from the top spots.
- Wz.55 Striga handles well but fires too slowly to compete with the top three SMGs consistently.
SMGs have always been the backbone of aggressive play in Call of Duty, and Modern Warfare 4 is no different. With MW4’s fast movement and close-quarters map design, a good SMG can carry an entire match. The game launched with five submachine guns, and while that’s a smaller pool than most CoD titles, each one fills a distinct role.
This guide ranks all 5 SMGs in COD Modern Warfare 4 from best to worst, based on fire rate, TTK, recoil, handling, and how well they hold up across different map types and modes. Let’s break it down.
All MW4 SMGs Ranked
Quick tier overview:
- S Tier (Absolute Meta): VEL 46, ISO Nightshade
- A Tier (Meta / Strong): X-58 Nyx
- B Tier (Contender): Wz.55 Striga
- C Tier (Situational): PPSh-41
Now let’s go through each one properly.
#1 โ VEL 46 (S Tier) โ Best SMG in MW4 Right Now
The VEL 46 has risen to the top of the SMG meta in Modern Warfare 4, and it earns that spot. It fires at 952 RPM โ the second-fastest SMG in the game โ with a 40-round base magazine and predictable, easy-to-manage recoil. That combination is dangerous. You get the fire rate to shred enemies in close fights and enough ammo to handle back-to-back engagements without running dry mid-push.
What sets it apart from the ISO Nightshade is consistency. The VEL 46 doesn’t ask much of you mechanically. Point it at someone, pull the trigger, and it does its job. The recoil pattern is almost vertical, which is one of the easiest to control in the game. It also pairs really well with an Overkill setup โ run the VEL 46 alongside a marksman rifle or sniper for a two-primary class that covers both close and long range.
Its Apex Attachment โ the VEL 46 Snap โ enables Quick Draw when running the Overkill perk, though it blocks the Stock slot. If you’re building an Overkill class, this is one of the best Apex Attachments in the game for that role.

#2 โ ISO Nightshade (S Tier) โ Best Close-Range Killer

The ISO Nightshade was the top SMG at launch and it’s barely dropped. It fires at 923 RPM with a 30-round mag, excellent mobility stats, and recoil that’s completely manageable once you learn the pattern. On compact maps and in objective modes like Hardpoint and Domination, this gun is a menace. You push into a room, delete whoever is in there, and get out before anyone can react.
It unlocks at Level 4 โ the same moment Create-a-Class becomes available โ which makes it the first SMG most players will properly grind. That’s worth knowing. Don’t sleep on it just because you got it early. The ISO Nightshade is one of the best guns in the entire game, not just the best early unlock.
The base 30-round mag empties fast at 923 RPM, especially in multi-kill situations. An extended drum is worth running if you regularly find yourself in 2v1 or 3v1 situations. The Apex Attachment โ ISO Trace โ tags enemies on impact and tracks their movement through an integrated optic. It blocks the Optic and Ammunition slots, so it’s a trade-off rather than a straight upgrade.

#3 โ X-58 Nyx (A Tier) โ Best Flanking SMG
The X-58 Nyx doesn’t get talked about as much as the ISO or VEL 46, but it’s genuinely strong and serves a specific role better than anything else in the game. It comes with an integrated suppressor by default, which means you stay off the minimap every time you fire without using your muzzle slot. That frees up an attachment slot for something else โ mobility, recoil control, handling โ and that’s a meaningful advantage over other SMGs.
It fires at 800 RPM with a 40-round magazine. The damage is solid at close to mid range. It’s not quite as face-melting as the VEL 46 in a straight-up gunfight, but for players who move around the outside of the map and hit enemies from unexpected angles, it’s the better choice. You attack, eliminate, reposition. Rinse and repeat.
The Apex Attachment โ X-58 Void โ hides enemy kill skulls and reduces directional hit indicators when you shoot someone, making it even harder for opponents to track your position. It blocks the Barrel and Ammunition slots, so plan your build around it carefully.
#4 โ Wz.55 Striga (B Tier) โ Mobile but Limited

The Wz.55 Striga is the most mobile SMG in MW4 and it has genuinely good recoil control. Those two things make it feel smooth and easy to use, especially when you’re pushing aggressively or repositioning constantly. The problem is the fire rate โ 651 RPM โ which is noticeably slower than the top three SMGs. In a close-range gunfight where milliseconds matter, that gap shows up.
The magazine is also on the smaller side at 25 rounds. You’ll need to reload more often than you’d like, which punishes any playstyle that involves clearing multiple enemies in quick succession. It’s a competent SMG, but every time you’d think to run it, the VEL 46 or ISO Nightshade does the same job faster.
Where it does have a unique trick is its Apex Attachment โ Wz.55 Striga Rampage โ which enables an akimbo dual-wield configuration. It’s chaotic and extremely fun on small maps, and if you enjoy that kind of high-risk, high-reward close-range play, the Striga becomes significantly more interesting. Just don’t expect it to compete at medium range with akimbo active.
#5 โ PPSh-41 (C Tier) โ Fastest Fire Rate, Range Nerf Hurts

On paper, the PPSh-41 looks terrifying. It fires at 1,110 RPM โ the highest fire rate of any gun in Modern Warfare 4 โ and it comes with a massive 71-round drum magazine. Inside 10 meters, almost nothing in the game survives an encounter with it. The sheer volume of bullets it puts out in a second is ridiculous.
The issue is what happened in the balance pass before launch. The PPSh-41 took a significant damage range nerf during the beta, and it never recovered those numbers at launch. Once you step outside close range โ roughly 15 meters or more โ the damage falls off noticeably. Enemies that should be dying quickly start requiring more bullets than expected, and the high fire rate means you’ll eat through your 71 rounds faster than you think if fights last more than a couple of seconds.
It also uses a Fire Mods slot instead of a rear grip, which limits your attachment flexibility compared to other SMGs. That’s a legacy quirk tied to the weapon’s long history in CoD.
Where it absolutely shines: Shipment, small search and destroy maps, or any scenario where you know every fight will happen at point-blank range. In those conditions, the PPSh-41 is still a menace. The Apex Attachment โ PPSh-41 Ember โ launches incendiary projectiles for area control, which adds some utility but doesn’t fix the range issue in standard gunfights.
Which MW4 SMG Should You Use?
Start with the ISO Nightshade. It unlocks at Level 4, it’s already a top-tier weapon, and grinding it early means you’ll have a fully built meta SMG by the time you’re deep into player progression. Once you hit Level 14 and unlock the M4, the ISO Nightshade makes for a perfect secondary in an Overkill class.
After that, grind the VEL 46. It’s the current top-ranked SMG and its Overkill Apex Attachment synergy is genuinely one of the strongest class options in the game right now.
If you like playing off the radar and flanking rather than running straight at people, the X-58 Nyx is worth your time. The built-in suppressor advantage is real and it doesn’t cost you a meaningful amount of combat performance to get it.
