- The MW4 standard Player Level cap is Level 55 (Commander rank) — after that, Prestige unlocks.
- Every level from 1 to 55 grants at least one unlock — weapons, perks, killstreaks, equipment, and field upgrades.
- There are 10 Prestige levels, each inspired by a different CoD game, followed by Prestige Master up to Level 1,000.
- Classic Prestige resets your level and gives a 20% XP bonus — Regular Prestige keeps all unlocks but offers fewer rewards.
- DMZ has its own separate 70-level progression track with different rewards — it runs independently from Multiplayer.
Modern Warfare 4’s progression system runs deep. Whether you’re just trying to unlock a specific weapon or perk, planning when to Prestige, or curious how far the grind goes — this guide covers everything from Level 1 all the way through Prestige Master at Level 1,000.
What is the Max Level in MW4?
The standard Multiplayer level cap in Modern Warfare 4 is Level 55, which carries the rank of Commander. Once you hit Level 55 and complete it — technically triggering Level 56 — the option to Prestige becomes available.
That’s not where it ends, though. After all 10 Prestige levels, you enter Prestige Master, which continues up to Level 1,000. And at the very top sits a final milestone: Prestige Legend, earned at Level 1,000, with its own exclusive icon and rewards.
Your DMZ progression is completely separate — it runs from Level 1 to Level 70 on its own track, with its own XP pool and rewards. Prestiging in Multiplayer has no impact on your DMZ level.
MW4 Multiplayer Level Unlocks: Levels 1–55
MW4 launches with 33 weapons, 18 perks, 17 killstreaks, 11 lethals, 9 tacticals, and 12 field upgrades — nearly all locked behind the 1–55 Player Level track. Every single level unlocks at least one piece of content. Here are the major milestones:
Levels 1–10: Getting Started
- Level 1: You start with default loadouts and immediate access to the HAN 86, ISO Nightshade, and other starter weapons.
- Level 4: Create-a-Class unlocks — this is the most important early unlock. You can now build custom loadouts, and a batch of starter weapons, killstreaks, and basic equipment all become available at this level. The UAV, Artillery Beacon, and Attack Helicopter killstreaks unlock here.
- Level 9: The M4 assault rifle unlocks — one of the best ARs in the game right now and currently ranked #1 Absolute Meta.
Check out the best M4 loadout guide to build it properly the moment it unlocks.
Levels 11–30: Mid-Game Weapons and Key Perks
- Level 14: M4 max weapon level is 72 — keep grinding it to unlock the Hurricane Apex Attachment at weapon Level 68.
- Level 18: The Hyeon Burst assault rifle unlocks.
- Level 23: The RPG-8 launcher unlocks.
- Level 25: The Patriot XMR battle rifle unlocks.
- Level 30: The Stim Tactical unlocks — one of the most valuable pieces of equipment in the game. It instantly heals you to full health, making it a top pick for the Permanent Unlock Token if you go Classic Prestige.
- Level 38: The Railgun Sentry Killstreak unlocks — an automated stationary threat that locks down chokepoints.
- Level 40: Birdseye (Perk 2) unlocks — it zooms out your minimap and makes UAV and Radar pings reveal enemy direction, not just position.
- Level 48: Kill Chain (Perk 1) unlocks — kills from Killstreaks award half streak points, a strong pick for Killstreak-heavy builds.
Levels 31–55: Endgame Content
- Level 43: The JOKR launcher unlocks.
- Level 55: The Cronen Squall assault rifle and Air Lockdown Killstreak both unlock simultaneously — these are the final two unlocks in the standard progression track. Reaching Level 55 also triggers the Prestige option.

Prestige in MW4: Classic vs Regular
MW4 is the first Call of Duty to offer two distinct Prestige paths. You choose between them when you hit Level 55.
Classic Prestige
- Resets your player level back to 1.
- Unlocks are taken away and must be re-earned as you level back up.
- You earn a Permanent Unlock Token — use it to permanently unlock one item that stays through all future Prestiges.
- You get a 20% XP bonus on all XP earned.
- You receive the full set of Prestige rewards.
- You earn the animated Prestige Icon for that level.
This is the recommended path. The 20% XP bonus stacks across Prestige levels and makes every subsequent grind noticeably faster. The Permanent Unlock Token is best spent on the Stim (Level 47) or the Cronen Squall (Level 55) so you always have access to those high-level unlocks regardless of your current Prestige rank.
Regular Prestige
- Resets your player level back to 1.
- All your unlocks are kept — you never lose access to your weapons, perks, or equipment.
- You earn a Prestige Icon but receive a smaller set of rewards.
- No 20% XP bonus.
- No Permanent Unlock Tokens.
Regular Prestige is for players who want the Prestige icon without the grind of re-unlocking their loadout. The trade-off is that you miss most of the actual Prestige rewards and the long-term XP advantage.
All Prestige Rewards (Prestige 1–10)
Each of the 10 Prestige levels is themed around a different game in the Call of Duty franchise. Every Prestige level gives you rewards at multiple milestones — operators, blueprints, loading screens, emblems, and more. Here’s the full breakdown:
- Prestige 1 — Call of Duty (2003): Sandstorm Operator Skin (Level 50), Mosin-Nagant Weapon Blueprint — Regular: “The Vet” / Classic: “The Vet Prime”
- Prestige 2 — Call of Duty 2 (2005): Operator Skin — Regular: “Calm Resolve” / Classic: “Trench Fiend”
- Prestige 3 — Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007): SAS Operator Skin — Regular: “Watchtower” / Classic: “Watchtower Prime”
- Prestige 4 — Modern Warfare 2 (2009): Finn LMG Blueprint — Regular: “Terminal” / Classic: “Torn Up”
- Prestige 5 — Modern Warfare 3 (2011): Army SF Airborne Operator Skin — Regular: “Razor One” / Classic: “Razor One Prime”
- Prestige 6 — (mid-era CoD): Themed rewards for this era
- Prestige 7 — Infinite Warfare (2016): Army SF Airborne Operator Skin — Regular: “Warfighter” / Classic: “Warfighter Prime”
- Prestige 8 — Modern Warfare (2019): M4 Weapon Blueprint — Regular: “141” / Classic: “141 Prime”
- Prestige 9 — Modern Warfare II (2022): Reece Operator Skin — Regular: “Sable” / Classic: “Sable Prime”
- Prestige 10 — Modern Warfare 4 (2026): Sang 9mm Blueprint — Regular: “Boksu” / Classic: “Boksu Prime”
Each Prestige level also gives smaller cosmetic rewards at levels 20, 30, and 40 within that Prestige track — including emblems, weapon charms, and large decals. For the full breakdown by rank, see our MW4 all prestige ranks and rewards guide.
Prestige Master: Levels 56 to 1,000
Once you complete Prestige 10, you enter Prestige Master. Your level resets to 56 and you climb continuously toward Level 1,000 without any more resets. Your unlocks are permanently kept from this point forward.
Prestige Master rewards include:
- Animated icons and level colors at set milestones up to Level 99, then every 25 levels after that
- Multi-color and animated icon variants unlocking at higher levels
- Prestige Legend title and exclusive icon at Level 1,000 — the highest achievable status in MW4 Multiplayer
Weapon Prestige and Pyroclast Camos
Separate from your Player Prestige is Weapon Prestige. Once any weapon hits its max level, you can choose to Prestige it — resetting the weapon level in exchange for access to the Pyroclast camo line. There are four Weapon Prestige camos in total:
- Pyroclast — earned at Weapon Prestige entry
- Pyroclast Terminus — earned during the re-grind
- Pyroclast Scatter — earned at Weapon Prestige Master Level 150
- Pyroclast Cascade — earned at Weapon Prestige Master Level 250
You can only Prestige each weapon once in MW4. After that, you’re working through 250 Weapon Prestige Master levels. These camos are the same across all weapons — unlike Black Ops 7, which has unique camos per weapon. For the full camo grind, see our MW4 all camo challenges guide.
DMZ Level Unlocks (Separate Track)
DMZ progression is completely independent. It runs from Level 1 to Level 70 and unlocks FOB Stations, 3D Printer Recipes, Operator slots, crafting upgrades, and more. XP earned in DMZ contributes to your Multiplayer level (1–55), but Multiplayer XP does not feed back into your DMZ level.
For the complete DMZ level unlock breakdown, check our MW4 DMZ XP and all level unlocks guide. If you want to speed up the grind on either track, use Double XP Tokens strategically — especially when grinding weapon levels toward Apex Attachments like the Hurricane on the M4, which unlocks at weapon Level 68.
