- The M4 is currently the #1 ranked Absolute Meta AR in MW4 Multiplayer with a 58.8% pick rate.
- It unlocks at Player Rank 9 — one of the earliest ARs available in the game.
- The best build uses suppression, recoil control, and laser attachments for consistent mid-range dominance.
- A second Hurricane Apex build is covered — it turns the M4 into a fast-handling AR/SMG hybrid.
- DMZ and Multiplayer builds are both included below.
The M4 has been a CoD staple for years, and in Modern Warfare 4, it’s sitting right at the top of the meta once again. You can grab it on PC via Steam or Xbox and start using this build from early on. It unlocks at Player Rank 9, which is one of the first ARs you’ll get your hands on, and it’s the most picked weapon in the game right now — a 58.8% pick rate doesn’t lie.
The M4 is fully automatic, handles cleanly at mid-range, and adapts to most maps without you having to think too hard about it. It’s not flashy. It’s just consistently effective, which is exactly why everyone runs it.
Here’s the best build for it right now, and how to make it work.
Best M4 Loadout for MW4 Multiplayer (Meta Build)
This is the standard Versatile build — the one that sits at Absolute Meta and works across basically every map type in MW4 Multiplayer.
- Muzzle: FSS IS300
- Stock: PF1 Fixed Stock
- Underbarrel: FSS Fireline Grip
- Rear Grip: Brace DX Grip
- Laser: SA LAZ-500
Why These Attachments Work
The FSS IS300 muzzle is the most important attachment on this build. It’s a heavy suppressor that keeps you off the minimap when firing, boosts muzzle velocity, and tightens up your recoil. In a game where UAVs are called constantly, staying invisible while firing is a massive advantage. This is a must-equip on the M4.
The PF1 Fixed Stock is all about stability. It reduces weapon sway while aiming and keeps your shots on target during sustained fire. The M4 can drift a bit over long bursts — this attachment keeps everything locked in without killing your ADS speed.
The FSS Fireline Grip underbarrel handles both horizontal and vertical recoil at the same time. For an AR that’s meant to perform at medium to long range, this grip is what allows you to hold your aim comfortably through a full magazine. It also helps with sprint-to-fire speed, which matters when you’re moving aggressively on smaller maps.
The Brace DX Grip rear grip improves overall handling. You’ll notice snappier target transitions and a smoother ADS feel. On a weapon you’re using in almost every engagement, that responsiveness adds up over a game.
The SA LAZ-500 laser rounds out the build by improving ADS speed and reducing gun bob while aiming. It’s one of the better laser attachments in MW4 for assault rifles and pairs well with the rest of this setup since you’re not sacrificing mobility for it. Best M4 Hurricane Apex Build (Aggressive Playstyle)
If you’ve maxed out the M4 to level 68, you unlock the Hurricane Apex Attachment. This is worth grinding for. The Hurricane converts the M4 into a bullpup-style weapon chambered in 5.7x28mm — essentially turning it into an AR/SMG hybrid with a high rate of fire and a large P90-style magazine. Think of it as a completely different weapon that happens to use the same base platform.
- Muzzle: FSS IS300
- Optic: Slimline Elite
- Stock: Hurricane Stock
- Laser: SA LAZ-500
- Apex: M4 Hurricane
The Hurricane Apex build is ranked Meta on its own and actually sits at #1 in the MW4 Multiplayer Apex Attachment category. It gives you the range and accuracy of an AR with the mobility and fire rate of an SMG — making it one of the most flexible weapons in the game for aggressive players. The Hurricane Stock is made specifically for this configuration and keeps the gun balanced without the conversion tanking your mobility.

Best M4 Loadout for DMZ
DMZ demands a different approach. You want suppression, more range, and enough ammo to deal with AI squads and player fights in the same engagement. Pair this with the right DMZ operator traits and you’ll have a setup that can handle almost anything the mode throws at you.
- Muzzle: FSS IS300 (Heavy Silencer)
- Barrel: 16″ Highmark Barrel
- Underbarrel: FSS Fireline Grip
- Magazine: 60 Round Drum
- Optic: SZ SRE-7
The 16″ Highmark Barrel (Heavy Barrel) is the big addition for DMZ. It boosts damage range and muzzle velocity, which helps when you’re taking on targets at longer distances — something that happens a lot more in DMZ than in standard 6v6 Multiplayer. The trade-off is a small hit to movement, but in DMZ you’re not sprinting around corners every five seconds anyway.
The 60 Round Drum Magazine is essential. You’re regularly fighting multiple AI enemies at once, plus the threat of a player squad dropping in. Running dry mid-fight in DMZ is a death sentence. The 60-round drum removes that problem entirely.
The SZ SRE-7 optic gives you a clean sight picture at range, which the base iron sights don’t offer well enough for longer DMZ sightlines. For other DMZ-specific tips, check out our guides on all DMZ boss locations and the Wanted Hunter System explained.
Best Class Setup for the M4 (Multiplayer)
Perks
- Perk 1: Ghost or Quick Fix
- Perk 2: Bomb Squad or Fast Hands
- Perk 3: Battle Hardened or Blood Rush
Ghost is the standard pick if you’re running an aggressive flanking style — it keeps you off UAVs, which pairs perfectly with the FSS IS300 suppressor. Quick Fix is a great alternative if you want faster health regen after kills, making you harder to clean up after a fight.
Bomb Squad reduces explosive damage, which is particularly useful on maps where people spam grenades at chokepoints. Fast Hands is the pick if you want faster weapon swaps and equipment use — useful when you’re pairing the M4 with a secondary like the ISO Nightshade for close-range situations.
Battle Hardened reduces the effect of flash, stun, and EMP grenades. If you find yourself getting flashed constantly before dying, this perk removes that frustration. Blood Rush is the aggressive alternative — it regenerates health faster and removes your tactical sprint cooldown, making you extremely mobile.
Equipment
- Lethal: Semtex
- Tactical: Flash Grenade
- Field Upgrade: Trophy System
Semtex and Flash Grenades are a simple but effective combo. Flash an angle, push it, clean up. Trophy System is your insurance policy when you’re holding a position — it destroys incoming grenades before they can ruin your setup.
Secondary Weapon
- Secondary: Sang 9mm or Krait P68
The Sang 9mm is a fast-draw sidearm that gets you out of trouble when reloading the M4 would get you killed. It pairs naturally with this setup. For more secondary options, our full MW4 multiplayer guide covers all the best combinations in detail.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of the M4 in MW4
- Don’t try to use it as a close-range gun. The M4 is built for medium range. If you’re running into tight corridors on maps like Shipment, a dedicated SMG like the ISO Nightshade will serve you better there.
- Let the suppressor do the work. The FSS IS300 keeps you off the map. Flank routes open up a lot more when enemies can’t hear you coming or track your position from kills.
- Grind to level 68 when you can. The Hurricane Apex Attachment changes the weapon entirely. Once you have it, you gain a second configuration that handles small maps much better without needing to swap weapons. Use Double XP Tokens to speed up the grind.
- Play the mid-range game. Position yourself where fights happen at 15–40 metres and let the M4’s natural accuracy do its job. Avoid picking duels at extremely long distances — that’s where dedicated DMRs and snipers take over.
- Track your camos. The M4 is the best weapon to start your camo grind on because of how much you’ll naturally play with it. Check out our full MW4 camo challenges guide to plan your progression.
Is the M4 the Best AR in Modern Warfare 4?
Right now, yes — the data backs it up. A 58.8% pick rate across Multiplayer and an Absolute Meta ranking in the current patch puts it ahead of every other assault rifle in the game. The HAN 86 is a strong competitor and can be more dominant in the right hands at longer ranges, but the M4 is easier to use, unlocks earlier, and works on every map type without needing to think about it too much.
For players who want a reliable primary that holds up from the first match to prestige rank, the M4 is the answer. Check out our MW4 prestige ranks and rewards guide to see what you’re working toward, and head over to PlayStation Store if you haven’t picked up the game yet.
