    What Is Modern Warfare 4?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It released on October 23, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam and Battle.net), and Nintendo Switch 2. It is the twenty-third game in the Call of Duty series and the final chapter of the rebooted Modern Warfare storyline.

The game comes with three full modes: a solo campaign, competitive multiplayer, and a rebuilt DMZ extraction mode. This guide breaks down everything you need to know about playing each one, whether you are just starting out or trying to sharpen your skills.

You can buy it on PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, or Steam. For pre-order bonuses and Vault Edition details, check out the MW4 Vault Edition rewards guide.

Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Guide (Solo)

    MW4 Campaign Story Overview

The campaign puts you in the middle of a military conflict between North and South Korea. You follow Task Force 141, including Captain Price, alongside a fresh group of South Korean Marines. The story sends you across multiple countries and settings.

Missions take you through trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters fights in New York, high-speed chases in Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai, and a city-wide assault to retake occupied territory. It is a globe-trotting campaign that feels grounded and personal at the same time.

There are 16 missions in total. Some are linear, others are open-world sandbox levels where you make your own choices. Mission 10, called Stranded, is a standout open sandbox in North Korea.

Want to know how long the campaign takes? See the Modern Warfare 4 campaign length guide. For early access details, read our MW4 campaign early access page.

    MW4 Campaign Difficulty Options

You can play the campaign on multiple difficulty levels. Each one changes enemy aggression and how much punishment you can take. If you are after achievements or trophies, difficulty matters a lot.

Read the full breakdown of every option and what they affect in the MW4 all campaign difficulties guide.

    MW4 Campaign Choices and Consequences

MW4 has decision points built into some missions. The choices you make can affect outcomes, deaths, and even achievements. One major decision involves a character named Graves.

    • Some choices lock you out of certain achievements.
    • Your decisions affect which ending content you unlock.
    • The Pacifist and No Harm Done achievements require specific playstyles.

Check these guides for full details:

How to Beat Makarov in MW4

The Makarov boss fight is the climax of the whole series. It is intense, and a lot of players get stuck here. The key is learning his movement patterns and knowing when to push versus when to take cover.

See the full boss strategy in the how to beat Makarov in MW4 guide.

    MW4 Campaign Collectibles and Secrets

Hidden throughout the campaign are notes, intel, dog tags, and code solutions. Missing these can lock you out of achievements like No Stone Unturned.

    • MW4 dog tags location and safe code
    • All MW4 code solutions
    • MW4 Stranded puzzle codes and yellow crate locations

    MW4 Campaign Rewards and Trophies

    Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer Guide

    All Multiplayer Maps in MW4

Modern Warfare 4 launches with 12 core 6v6 maps. There are also dedicated Gunfight maps and Ground War maps for larger battles.

6v6 Core Maps include: Cachette, Coal, Silkworm, Lotus, Transit 213, and more. Each map was inspired by campaign locations, built “two blocks down” from where the main story events happen.

Gunfight Maps: Cafe, Library NYC, Smuggler.

Ground War Maps: Forest, Imjin Farmland, Wolves Stadium.

The maps span locations from Seoul to Mumbai to New York. Globetrotting is a key part of the Modern Warfare identity, and these maps reflect that well.

    All Multiplayer Modes in MW4

MW4 multiplayer has a wide range of modes at launch, including new ones and fan favorites.

    • Team Deathmatch: Classic 6v6. Kill enemies, build killstreaks, win on score.
    • Domination: Capture and hold three flags. Teams switch sides at halftime.
    • Kill Block: Brand new. A round-based mode in a live-fire training facility. Supports 3v3 and 10v10 configurations.
    • Gunfight: 2v2 with random weapon loadouts. Fast, focused, and skill-heavy.
    • Ground War / Combat Outpost: Large-scale combined arms battles with vehicles.
    • Hijack and Inflation: New modes where cash and objective play mix together.
    • Big War: Large player count battles across big maps.
    • Party Modes: Gun Game and Drop Zone are back at launch, which is rare for a COD title.

There are also two limited-time Halloween-themed modes arriving before Season 1.

    MW4 Multiplayer Tips for Beginners

Getting wrecked in your first few hours is normal. Here are some things that actually help.

Start with the training course. The movement in MW4 — mantling, sliding, and repositioning — is refined from earlier entries. Practice the inputs before jumping into live matches. Your campaign time counts here too, since the feel of gunplay is identical.

Fix your settings first. Sensitivity is easy to overlook. If you are consistently overshooting enemies, drop it a little. If turning feels sluggish, bump it up. Spend five minutes here before your first real match.

Use default loadouts early. They let you sample different weapon types before you invest time into building your own class. Once you hit level five, Create-a-Class opens up.

Do not rely on pre-launch meta guides. A third of the weapons were not in the beta, and Apex Attachments change gun balance at max level rather than base. The real meta takes a few weeks to settle.

Smartstreaks reward objective play too. Kills are still the main driver, but capping flags and completing objectives also push your killstreak progress. This matters a lot in modes like Domination and Kill Block.

    Best Weapons in MW4 Multiplayer

Finding your weapon early makes a huge difference. Here is a simple breakdown by role:

    • Best Assault Rifle: M4 — reliable, forgiving recoil, good at most ranges. Best starting point for any player.
    • Best SMG for Close Range: ISO Nightshade — built for suppressed flanks and tight angles.
    • Best Sniper to Learn: KG-7 Vulcan — consistent, learnable, a solid first sniper choice.
    • Strong Assault Alternative: Patriot XMR — capable at medium range with the right attachments.

For a recommended early loadout, try the Patriot XMR with the Astaroth .57 scope, EXP Undertow Gen. 2 muzzle, FSS Fireline Grip underbarrel, a 35-round mag, and Schlager Attack-7 rear grip. It is a well-rounded mid-range setup that rewards clean aiming.

For a full list of weapons and how to unlock them all, see the MW4 weapons unlock guide.

    MW4 Killstreaks Guide

There are 17 killstreaks at launch in MW4. A few things to know:

    • Every killstreak cost went up by one kill compared to the beta.
    • The Hardline perk reduces the cost of every killstreak by one kill — a solid perk for streak-hungry players.
    • The Bomb Glider is the first killstreak you unlock at level 6.
    • One weapon, the Kastov 762 “ARC”, disrupts enemy killstreaks. It does not take up an attachment slot.
    • Pair lower-tier reliable streaks with one or two higher-tier rewards rather than going all-in on expensive ones.

For a complete breakdown of all killstreaks and how to unlock them, read the MW4 killstreaks unlock guide.

    MW4 Multiplayer Progression and Prestige

Progression in MW4 goes from Private all the way to Commander. Here is what the first few levels unlock:

    • Levels 1–5: Default loadouts, then Create-a-Class, the VEL 46 SMG, and the Bomb Glider killstreak.
    • Weapon Camos: Each weapon has its own camo track plus shared mastery camos. There are 9 Mastery Camos — three per mode (Multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone).

Prestige carries its own set of requirements and exclusive rewards. Plan your prestige path before you hit the level cap — deciding after the fact wastes progress. See the full breakdown in the MW4 prestige requirements and rewards guide.

    Theater Mode in MW4 Multiplayer

Theater Mode is back in MW4. It last appeared in an Infinity Ward title with the original Modern Warfare 3. You can record and review your matches, which is actually useful for studying your mistakes and improving your game sense.

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Guide (Extraction Mode)

    What Is DMZ in MW4?

DMZ is the third pillar of Modern Warfare 4, sitting alongside the campaign and multiplayer. It is a PvPvE extraction shooter where you drop into a large map called Hajin, complete missions, loot gear, fight both AI enemies and real players, and try to extract before things go wrong.

DMZ originally launched as a beta mode with Modern Warfare 2 in 2022. This version is built from scratch as a full mode with dedicated progression, its own story content, and a much bigger scope.

It is not free to play this time. You need to own Modern Warfare 4 to access it.

    MW4 DMZ Map — Hajin

Hajin is the Exclusion Zone in MW4 DMZ. It is a large-scale conflict zone designed for both structured missions and open-ended exploration. The map features dynamic weather and environmental storytelling tied to the campaign’s aftermath.

Key activities in Hajin include Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, a Bounty Board for hunting rival operators, contracts, and free roam exploration. There are multiple points of interest, boss enemies, environmental puzzles, and raid-style operations scattered across the zone.

Your Forward Operating Base (FOB) acts as your home hub. It is where you manage your stash, loadout, missions, crafting, and long-term operator upgrades between deployments. Upgrading your FOB is a key part of DMZ progression.

For more on the FOB and what you can unlock, see the all FOB stations in MW4 DMZ guide.

    DMZ Game Modes Explained

When you deploy into Hajin, you have three ways to approach each match:

    • Story Missions: Narrative-driven objectives written by the MW4 campaign team. These missions continue the game’s story inside live DMZ servers, meaning other players on their own missions can cross your path.
    • Dynamic Operations: Randomized multi-step objectives across nine deployment zones. No two runs are the same. These keep the mode feeling fresh over time.
    • Free Roam: Open-ended exploration with no set objective. Loot what you find, fight who you want, and extract when you are ready.

Six story missions are available from the very start. You do not have to unlock them.

For leveling up efficiently in DMZ, see the MW4 DMZ XP and all level unlocks guide.

Can You Play MW4 DMZ Solo?

Yes, you can play DMZ completely solo in Modern Warfare 4. There are no restrictions on solo play. A squad holds a maximum of three players, but you can drop in alone.

To do it, go to the deployment screen and turn off the Squad Fill option before you search for a match. On PlayStation, press L2. On Xbox, press LB.

There is no dedicated solo-only playlist, so you can still run into full squads. Infinity Ward has confirmed that the matchmaking system tries to put solos with solos and trios with trios, but it is not guaranteed.

Tips for Playing Solo in MW4 DMZ

Playing solo is harder. There is nobody to revive you and you are outnumbered in most gunfights. These tips help:

    • Prioritize stealth. Firing loud weapons draws squads to your position. Use suppressors and pick quiet routes.
    • Carry revive tools. The Tourniquet Ability, Possum Trait, and Self Revives are essential for solo runs.
    • Loot smart, not fast. Do not spend too long in one building. Move in, take what you need, and reposition.
    • Use proximity chat. If you run into other players, you can talk your way into temporary truces or even join their squad temporarily through assimilation.
    • Avoid busy POIs early. Let squads clear each other out, then move in for the loot.

    MW4 DMZ Progression System

DMZ progression is completely separate from multiplayer. Your rank in DMZ does not affect your multiplayer level, and vice versa.

You build progress through DMZ rank, unlocking Traits (passive abilities), upgrading your FOB, and completing missions. Looting crafting materials is important for long-term upgrades.

You can create multiple Operators using the Active Duty slot system. Each slot holds its own gear, rank, and equipment — so losing one Operator does not wipe everything.

The Bounty Board adds a competition layer. When you kill another player, they can become a target and you earn rewards. It turns every PvP fight into a risk-versus-reward decision.

Does Modern Warfare 4 Have Zombies?

No. Modern Warfare 4 does not include a Zombies mode. It focuses on the campaign, multiplayer, and DMZ as its three main pillars. If you want details on exactly what is and is not included, read the does MW4 have zombies guide.

MW4 Warzone and Carry Forward Content

If you played previous Modern Warfare games and Warzone, some of your content can carry forward into MW4. This includes certain operator skins, weapon blueprints, and bundles from your previous library.

For exactly what transfers and what does not, check the MW4 Warzone carry forward content guide.

Final Tips Before You Drop In

Whether you are starting with the campaign, grinding multiplayer, or heading into Hajin for the first time, these quick tips apply across the board:

    • Play the campaign first. The gunplay feel in MW4’s campaign is identical to multiplayer. Use it to learn recoil and movement without the pressure of live opponents.
    • Check your settings before your first match. Sensitivity, button layout, and HUD options matter more than most people realize.
    • Do not rush prestige. Have a clear plan before hitting the cap so you do not waste unlock tokens.
    • In DMZ, your first priority is extracting. Loot and missions are secondary to getting out alive, especially in your first few runs.
    • Objective play builds killstreaks too. Playing the objective in Domination and Kill Block earns Smartstreak progress alongside your kills.

Modern Warfare 4 is a big game with a lot of content. Take your time with each mode. The campaign rewards exploration, multiplayer rewards map knowledge, and DMZ rewards patience. All three are worth your time.
