TL;DR
- DMZ Prestige is tied to individual Operators, not your overall DMZ Player Level.
- You need 18 Trait Points (Onyx III Dog Tag) before you can Prestige.
- Each Prestige costs specific gear, 3D Printer Ingredients, and DMZ Cash.
- Costs rise from 200,000 cash at Prestige 1 to 500,000 at Prestige 3 and beyond.
- Each Prestige gives one random Permanent Prestige Trait — max of 3 per Operator.
- Permanent Prestige Traits survive death, MIA, and even dismissal of the Operator.
- Prestige is infinite. From Prestige 4 onward you can replace one of your three permanent Traits.
- Prestiging an Operator resets their regular Traits and Dog Tag back to Steel I.
What Is DMZ Prestige in Modern Warfare 4?
DMZ Prestige is a system for individual Operators — not your account, not your overall DMZ Player Level. It is completely separate from the main 1–55 player rank and the 1–70 DMZ Player Level track.
Think of it this way. Your DMZ Player Level unlocks FOB Stations and gear. Your Operator’s Dog Tag track earns Trait Points for building that Operator’s skill set. Prestige is what happens after an Operator maxes out — you sacrifice gear and cash to reset them, and in return they earn a Permanent Prestige Trait that never goes away.
It is a sacrifice system. You give up fully built-out Traits to earn something permanent. Whether that trade is worth it depends on how committed you are to running a single Operator long-term.
For full context on how the DMZ level system works separately from this, see our MW4 DMZ XP and all level unlocks guide.
How to Unlock Prestige in MW4 DMZ
Before you can even think about Prestiging, your Operator needs to hit Onyx III on their Dog Tag track. That means earning all 18 Trait Points. There are no shortcuts — you have to actually play and level that specific Operator through every Dog Tag stage from Steel I all the way to Onyx III.
Once you hit Onyx III with 18 Trait Points, and the Operator is not currently MIA, the Prestige option becomes available. You access it through the Operators Station at your FOB. Go to Manage → Traits → Prestige tab (the one with the crown icon). From there, confirm the Prestige if you have the required gear and cash ready.
That is the full unlock requirement: 18 Trait Points + not MIA + gear and cash. Nothing else gates it.
For a full breakdown of what the Operators Station does and how it connects to your FOB setup, see our guide on all FOB Stations in MW4 DMZ.

DMZ Dog Tag Levels Explained: Steel to Onyx III
Every Operator in DMZ has their own Dog Tag that tracks their individual progression. It starts at Steel I and works up through six tiers, each with three stages. Every stage is one Dog Tag level, and every Dog Tag level gives exactly one Trait Point.
Here is the full Dog Tag progression track:
| Dog Tag Tier | Stages | Trait Points Earned (Cumulative) |
|---|---|---|
| Steel | I, II, III | 3 |
| Bronze | I, II, III | 6 |
| Silver | I, II, III | 9 |
| Gold | I, II, III | 12 |
| Damascus | I, II, III | 15 |
| Onyx | I, II, III | 18 (Maximum — Prestige Eligible) |
Dog Tag levels are earned through DMZ XP — the same XP that feeds your account-wide DMZ Player Level. Every successful exfil earns XP for the Operator you ran with that deployment. A strong run can level your Dog Tag more than once in a single deployment. If you exfil after clearing a full Dynamic Op and several Side Ops, it is realistic to jump two or three Dog Tag stages from one run.
This Dog Tag track is per-Operator. Your main DMZ Player Level is account-wide. They run separately and do not affect each other directly.

All DMZ Prestige Requirements: Prestige 1, 2, and 3+
Every Prestige has the same base requirement — 18 Trait Points at Onyx III. What changes between each Prestige is the gear rarity, weapon attachment requirement, and cash cost. It gets significantly more expensive as you go.
| Requirement | Prestige 1 | Prestige 2 | Prestige 3+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trait Points (Dog Tag) | 18 (Onyx III) | 18 (Onyx III) | 18 (Onyx III) |
| Weapons | 2× Weapons (Rare+, 3 Attachment Slots each) | 2× Weapons (Epic+, 4 Attachment Slots each) | 2× Weapons (3 Attachment Slots each) |
| Plate Carrier | Rare Rarity or higher | Epic Rarity or higher | Legendary Rarity |
| Backpack | Rare Rarity or higher | Epic Rarity or higher | Legendary Rarity |
| 3D Printer Ingredients | 4× Rare Rarity or higher | 4× Epic Rarity or higher | 4× Legendary Rarity |
| DMZ Cash | 200,000 | 300,000 | 500,000 |
| Reward | Random Permanent Prestige Trait | Random Permanent Prestige Trait | Random Permanent Prestige Trait |
The gear you submit is consumed permanently. It is gone after the Prestige. The cash is also deducted directly from your FOB Bank. Anything the Operator had in their Loadout that is not submitted is also lost — Secure Slots do not protect items during a Prestige. So clear out anything valuable you want to keep before confirming.
Prestige 1 Requirements
This is the entry point. The requirements are the most accessible of the three tiers, but you still need Rare-quality gear — so you should be comfortable running mid-tier operations before going for this. Specifically:
- 18 Trait Points (Onyx III Dog Tag)
- 2 weapons, each Rare rarity or higher, each with 3 Attachment Slots
- 1 Plate Carrier — Rare rarity or higher
- 1 Backpack — Rare rarity or higher
- 4 3D Printer Ingredients — Rare rarity or higher
- 200,000 DMZ Cash in your FOB Bank
Prestige 2 Requirements
The step up from Prestige 1 to 2 is noticeable. Gear requirements jump to Epic rarity, and the weapons now need 4 Attachment Slots each instead of 3. The cash cost also rises to 300,000. You will need to have run enough successful operations — and saved enough DMZ Cash — to fund this comfortably. Specifically:
- 18 Trait Points (Onyx III Dog Tag)
- 2 weapons, each with 4 Attachment Slots
- 1 Plate Carrier — Epic rarity or higher
- 1 Backpack — Epic rarity or higher
- 4 3D Printer Ingredients — Epic rarity or higher
- 300,000 DMZ Cash in your FOB Bank
Prestige 3 and Beyond Requirements
From Prestige 3 onward, the requirements lock in at their hardest tier. You need Legendary-rarity gear across the board and 500,000 DMZ Cash every single time. This cost stays fixed — Prestige 4, 5, 6 and beyond all cost the same as Prestige 3. Specifically:
- 18 Trait Points (Onyx III Dog Tag)
- 2 weapons, each with 3 Attachment Slots
- 1 Plate Carrier — Legendary rarity
- 1 Backpack — Legendary rarity
- 4 3D Printer Ingredients — Legendary rarity
- 500,000 DMZ Cash in your FOB Bank
For context on how to build your FOB Bank and earn DMZ Cash efficiently, Dynamic Operations are your best repeatable source. Each completed Op deposits Cash directly into your account even before you exfil, which means it is secured regardless of whether you die. Our FOB Stations guide covers the Vendor and Gunsmith setups that benefit most from a healthy Cash reserve.
What Rewards Does DMZ Prestige Give?
Permanent Prestige Traits
Every Prestige gives you one random Permanent Prestige Trait. You do not get to choose which Trait you receive. It is random from a pool of available Prestige Traits each time.
What makes these special is that they are permanent in a way regular Traits are not. Normal Traits reset when you Prestige. But Permanent Prestige Traits stay on the Operator no matter what happens to them. They survive:
- Death and going MIA
- Dismissing the Operator from Active Duty
- Changing the Operator’s skin
- Future Prestiges on the same Operator
Each Operator can hold a maximum of three Permanent Prestige Traits. You earn one at Prestige 1, a second at Prestige 2, and a third at Prestige 3.
What Happens From Prestige 4 Onward?
The Prestige system is infinite — there is no cap. But once an Operator has three Permanent Prestige Traits, additional Prestiges work differently.
From Prestige 4 onward, every new Prestige still gives a random Permanent Prestige Trait. But now you have a choice: keep the new Trait and swap out one of your existing three, or discard it and keep what you already have. You never go above three Permanent Prestige Traits at once, but you can keep chasing Prestiges to reroll and find a combination you prefer.
The cost stays fixed at Prestige 3 levels (Legendary gear, 500,000 cash) for all future Prestiges.
Calling Cards and Classified Rewards
Beyond Permanent Prestige Traits, Prestiging multiple different Operators also unlocks Calling Cards and other classified rewards. The full list of these multi-Operator rewards has not been publicly detailed yet by Activision, but they appear to reward players who develop several Operators rather than focusing exclusively on one.
What Resets When You Prestige?
Prestige resets the following for that Operator:
- All regular Trait Points — Their 18 spent Trait Points are wiped. The Operator goes back to 0 points across all three trees.
- Dog Tag rank — The Operator returns to Steel I and must be leveled back up to Onyx III again before the next Prestige.
- The submitted gear — The weapons, plate carrier, backpack, and 3D Printer Ingredients you used as payment are consumed and gone.
- The DMZ Cash payment — Deducted permanently from your FOB Bank.
What does not reset:
- Your Permanent Prestige Traits (they stay on the Operator permanently)
- Your overall DMZ Player Level and account-wide progression
- Other Operators’ progression
- Your Stash and any items not tied to the Operator’s Loadout
The Trait Trees: Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist
Before you Prestige, you need to understand what you are building with your 18 Trait Points — because the whole point is to earn something permanent that works well with the Traits you will rebuild after each reset.
There are 66 total Traits across three trees. You can spend at most 9 points in any single tree. Every tree has 6 Major Traits (always visible) and 16 Minor Traits (which appear at random and vary between Operators). Trait picks are permanent within a build — you cannot respec without Prestiging.
Warfighter Tree — Combat and Equipment
This tree is for players who engage frequently in fights. The benefits focus on combat survivability, equipment cycling, and handling engagements more aggressively.
- Adrenaline Burst — Kills reset tactical sprint.
- Equipment Professional — Lethals and Tacticals slowly recharge after use.
- Combat Resistance — Reduces explosive damage and weakens enemy Tactical effects.
- Viper Sense — Conceals you from thermal optics and AI targeting systems.
- Quick Fix — Reduces health regeneration delay after a kill.
- Possum — Once per match, self-revive from death into Last Stand at full health.
- Adaptive Restock — Enemy hostiles drop one extra item when killed.
- Bounty Hunter — Increases rewards for collecting bounties.
Scout Tree — Looting, Cash and Recon
Scout Traits support a play style built around looting efficiently, tracking enemies, and maximizing what you bring back from a run.
- Investor — Slightly increases DMZ Cash extracted per run.
- Hostile Looter — Enemies sometimes drop Uncommon 3D Printer Ingredients, with a small chance for Rare.
- Container Looter — Increases chances of extra loot from containers.
- Thermal Padding — Hides you from UAVs and downgrades Advanced UAVs to standard detection.
- UAV Upgrade — Increases UAV range and duration, and upgrades them to Advanced UAVs.
- Overwatch — UAV towers you activate never expire for the deployment.
- Fast Learner — Slightly increases Operator XP gain per run.
- Field Crafting — Allows crafting from Common resources while deployed in Hajin.
Survivalist Tree — Staying Alive and Extracting
The Survivalist tree is about keeping yourself and your squad alive long enough to exfil. These Traits are especially strong for solo players and squads running high-risk routes.
- Faster Revive — Reviving downed allies takes less time.
- Consumable Duration — Consumables last longer when used.
- Impact Smokes — Releases a smoke screen when you are downed.
- Free Revive — Automatically repairs your first Wound.
- Expedited Extraction — Exfil helicopters arrive significantly faster when called.
- Rad Blocker — Reduces damage taken from radiation zones.
- Fuel Economy — Lowers vehicle fuel consumption.
- Numb the Pain — Applies Painkiller and Smelling Salts effects when revived.
- Consumable Stacker — Using an already-active consumable stacks its duration, up to twice the base.
- Air Superiority — UAV towers and SAM sites remain active for longer.
Best Traits to Build Before Your First Prestige
Since Prestige resets your Traits, your final Trait build before your first Prestige does not matter much in the long run. What matters is building something useful enough to get you through the grind back to Onyx III after each reset.
That said, here are some Traits that are widely considered strong picks during the rebuild phase:
- Possum (Warfighter) — A built-in self-revive once per run. This saves entire deployments when you are playing solo or your squad is not nearby.
- Adaptive Restock (Warfighter) — Every AI enemy drops an extra item. This compounds across a full run and significantly speeds up ingredient farming.
- Overwatch (Scout) — UAV towers you activate stay live forever. Permanent intel coverage for the whole deployment.
- UAV Upgrade (Scout) — Turns standard UAVs into Advanced UAVs that show enemy direction and movement. Huge for spotting rival operators.
- Free Revive (Survivalist) — Your first wound heals itself automatically. This is especially strong in solo play.
- Consumable Duration (Survivalist) — Every armor, consumable, and buff lasts longer. More value per item in your backpack.

How to Prepare for DMZ Prestige
Rushing into a Prestige before you are ready wastes good gear. Here is how to set yourself up properly before committing:
Build your DMZ Cash reserve first. You need 200,000 for the first Prestige, 300,000 for the second, and 500,000 from the third onward. Dynamic Operations are the most reliable way to grow your FOB Bank — their cash payout is secured even if you die before exfil. Run several successful Operations and hold the cash before spending it on the Vendor or Gunsmith.
Farm the required gear rarity. For Prestige 1 you need Rare gear. This means loot runs focused on higher-quality containers and Lieutenant Hunts, which drop better items. The 3D Printer also lets you craft Rare plate carriers and backpacks once you have the recipes and ingredients. Check the Boss Board for Lieutenant locations before your farming runs.
Pin your required 3D Printer Ingredients. You need 4 Printer Ingredients at the correct rarity. Use the Pin function inside the 3D Printer menu to track these in Hajin. Pinned items show an icon when you find them in the field, so you are not trying to remember ingredient names mid-run.
Clear your Operator’s Loadout of anything valuable. When you Prestige, anything on the Operator that is not part of the submitted gear is also lost. Move anything you want to keep into your Stash before confirming the Prestige.
Make sure your Operator is not MIA. An Operator that is MIA cannot Prestige. If yours is missing, pay the recovery cost at the Operators Station first, then proceed.
Is DMZ Prestige Worth It?
That depends on how long you plan to run DMZ. The trade is straightforward: you give up your current build and decent gear for one random Permanent Prestige Trait. The randomness is the main frustration. You might get a Trait that fits your play style well, or you might get one that does not — and there is no way to control it.
The argument for doing it is simple: Permanent Prestige Traits survive everything. They compound over multiple Prestiges. An Operator with three strong Permanent Traits is permanently stronger than one without, regardless of what their current Trait build looks like at any given moment. If you play enough DMZ that an Operator regularly reaches Onyx III, the long-term investment is worth it.
The argument against rushing it: the cash cost is steep, especially at Prestige 3+. If you are still unlocking FOB Stations, building out your 3D Printer recipe library, or saving for Vendor purchases, burning 500,000 DMZ Cash on a Prestige at an early stage can slow your overall FOB development significantly.
A good rule of thumb is to push through Prestige 1 and 2 naturally as you level, and treat Prestige 3+ as a long-term grind goal rather than an immediate priority.
