All Multiplayer Modes in Modern Warfare 4
    • Modern Warfare 4 launches with 16 multiplayer modes across Core 6v6, Ground War, Gunfight, and Party categories.
    • Six new modes were added at launch: Inflation, Hijack, Counter Attack, Collateral, Frontline, and Ground War: Combat Outpost.
    • Collateral is MW4’s CS2/Valorant-style economy mode — no respawns, no custom loadouts, round-based bomb planting.
    • Inflation is the standout new respawn mode where every kill increases your personal cash value and makes you a bigger target.
    • Possession and Infected arrived as post-launch modes on October 29 and 30 respectively.

Modern Warfare 4 comes with the biggest launch mode lineup the series has seen in years. Whether you like fast respawn chaos, tactical one-life rounds, massive vehicle battles, or competitive economy play, there’s a mode built for it. Here’s every multiplayer mode at launch, what each one is about, and which ones to start with.

You can pick up the game and jump in on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, or Xbox.

    Core 6v6 Respawn Modes

These are the bread and butter of MW4 Multiplayer — you respawn after dying, play is continuous, and matches run on time limits or score targets. Hardcore variants are available for the classic modes in this category.

    Team Deathmatch (Returning)

The original. Two teams of six fight to reach 100 kills first. Match time is 10 minutes. Pure elimination, no objectives — just find and eliminate the enemy team faster than they eliminate yours. Good for warming up or grinding weapon XP quickly. Score limit: 100. Supports parties of 1–6.

    Domination (Returning)

Capture and hold three flags spread across the map. Each flag your team controls earns points over time. Score limit is 200. The team that reaches 200 first wins, or the highest score at time’s end. Objectives don’t have a fixed time limit — the match ends when the score cap is hit. Best mode for grinding XP through objective play.

    Hardpoint (Returning)

A single objective point rotates around the map. Your team earns points for every second you hold it, and the Hardpoint location changes on a timer. Score limit is 250 with a 5-minute match clock. This is one of the fastest-paced objective modes in the game because everyone is always moving toward the same location.

    Kill Confirmed (Returning)

Killing an enemy drops a dog tag. Your team scores by picking up enemy tags and denies points by picking up your own fallen teammates’ tags before the enemy does. It rewards aggressive play and punishes camping since you can’t score without actually moving to collect tags. Score limit: 100. For more on tags as a gameplay mechanic, check our MW4 Dog Tags guide.

    Free-for-All (Returning)

Eight players, no teams, every man for himself. First to 30 kills wins, or the leader at the end of the 10-minute clock. No revives, no squad, no coordination — straight individual skill. Good practice for understanding sight lines and positioning without being bailed out by a teammate.

    Inflation (New)

This is the standout new mode in MW4 and one of the most interesting additions to the franchise in years. Every kill you earn adds to your personal cash balance — and the more cash you’re carrying, the more valuable you become as a target. Other players can see the richest player on the map marked as a High-Value Target (HVT).

The match is won by the team with the highest combined cash total, not the most kills. Overtime raises cash multipliers, which means a team behind on money can still steal the win late. It punishes passive play — hanging back doesn’t build cash, pushing engagements does. Expect constant, high-tempo action. Great for XP grinding due to the volume of engagements.

    Hijack (New)

An objective-based mode where the goal is to capture and hold a moving vehicle or package. The twist is the objective doesn’t stay in one place — it moves, which means both teams are constantly chasing and fighting around a shifting point. Map control and anticipating the objective’s path matter more than raw kills. It rewards calculated aggression over rushing.

    Counter Attack (New)

A new respawn objective mode where teams earn additional score for eliminations made outside their starting base area. It pushes both teams forward and away from spawn camping by rewarding aggressive forward positioning. Players who push into enemy territory and get kills score more than players who sit back.

    Frontline (Returning)

Teams spawn on opposite sides of the map and fight across a central battleground. Additional points are awarded for eliminations made in the opposing team’s base area, encouraging aggressive pushes rather than defensive play. Keeps both teams moving toward each other rather than holding back positions.

    Round-Based Tactical Modes

These modes have no respawns mid-round. One life per round, wins accumulate across rounds, and team coordination matters far more than in respawn modes. These attract the more competitive end of the player base.

    Search and Destroy (Returning)

Attack and defend two bomb sites with no respawns. Attackers plant the bomb, defenders defuse it or eliminate the attacking team before detonation. Rounds alternate. Win by either eliminating the enemy team or successfully planting or defusing. The most tactically demanding mode in MW4’s standard lineup and the foundation of competitive CoD for years.

    Collateral (New)

This is MW4’s boldest new mode and directly inspired by Counter-Strike 2 and Valorant. It’s round-based bomb planting — attack versus defend across two bomb sites — with no respawns. Here’s what makes it different from Search and Destroy:

    • No custom loadouts. You start each round with a pistol.
    • An in-game economy system lets you earn and spend cash between rounds on weapons, armor, and equipment.
    • No killstreaks. No automatic health regeneration.
    • You buy your weapon every round based on what you earned the round before.

If you’ve spent any time in CS2 or Valorant, Collateral will feel immediately familiar. For CoD players coming from respawn modes, it’s a big shift — running dry on cash means starting a round with a pistol while the enemy team has rifles. Financial management becomes a core skill, not just aim. At launch, Collateral is confirmed for PC.

    Gunfight Modes

Small-team round-based combat on compact maps. Each round is fast, intense, and tactical. Good for players who want tight engagements without committing to a full Search and Destroy session.

    Gunfight 3v3 (Returning)

Three versus three on dedicated Gunfight maps — Cafe, Library, NYC, and Smuggler at launch. Rounds are fast with no respawns. Attachments are standardised, keeping the emphasis on raw gunplay and positioning over loadout advantages.

    Gunfight 10v10 (New)

A bigger take on Gunfight that plays out on the modular Kill Block map. Kill Block is set at the Westbridge Training Facility and can reconfigure its layout between rounds — generating over 500 different possible configurations. This means sightlines, routes, and choke points shift constantly, preventing either team from memorising the map and forcing adaptation every round. It also supports 1v1 and 3v3 formats. Additional modes including Search and Destroy and Domination are being tested on Kill Block for future updates.

    Ground War Modes

Large-scale infantry and vehicle combat on MW4’s three dedicated Ground War maps: Forest, Imjin Farmland, and Wolves Stadium. If 6v6 feels too small, this is where to go.

    Ground War: Combat Outpost (New)

MW4’s flagship large-scale mode. Up to 32v32 players (some sources cite 24v24) fight for control across a large map featuring infantry combat, vehicles, killstreaks, and tanks. Here’s how it works:

    • Capture an Outpost to earn resources and points.
    • A secured Outpost also becomes a spawn point for your team, advancing your frontline toward the enemy.
    • Additional objectives layer on top of Outpost control, giving both teams things to fight over beyond just flags.

It combines classic Domination-style capture mechanics with a dynamic spawn system that means losing Outposts has an immediate tactical consequence. It plays closer to Battlefield territory than standard CoD, with vehicles and coordinated team play mattering as much as individual performance. Pair it with an AR build like the meta M4 loadout or the HAN 86 for the longer sightlines these maps offer.

    Party Modes

Casual, fun, and good for when you want a break from the main game without logging off.

    Gun Game (Returning)

Everyone starts with the same weapon. Each kill automatically cycles you to the next weapon in a fixed progression. First player to cycle through all weapons and get a kill with the final one wins. There’s only one player per weapon — getting killed by a melee attack sends you back one weapon. It’s chaotic, funny, and a good way to try out weapons you wouldn’t normally use. See our full MW4 weapon unlock guide to know what the full weapon roster looks like.

    Drop Zone (Returning)

Care Packages drop randomly across the map. Teams fight to capture and hold the drop zone where they land. Points are scored while your team controls the zone. It creates fast, focused combat around a single moving objective and rewards teams who can push and hold positions quickly.

    Post-Launch Modes

Two additional modes arrived shortly after the October 23 launch:

    • Possession Mode — available from October 29. An objective mode where players fight to control and hold a single item passed on elimination, similar in spirit to Kill Confirmed but with a single carried objective.
    • Infected Mode — available from October 30. A classic fan favourite. One player starts as the Infected and converts others on kill. Survivors must last the timer while the Infected team grows. Last survivor standing wins for the human side.

    Hardcore Modes

Hardcore variants are available for Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Free-for-All, and Search and Destroy. Hardcore strips out most of the HUD, enables friendly fire, significantly reduces health, and removes health regeneration. Fights end in one or two shots and require far more map awareness and communication than standard play. Not for beginners, but rewarding once the base game is understood.

Which Mode Should You Start With?

If you’re new to MW4 — Team Deathmatch is the safest start. No objectives to learn, just straightforward elimination while you find your footing with your preferred loadout.

If you want the best XP — Inflation and Domination reward objective play heavily. Combined with Double XP Tokens, these are the fastest routes to levelling up your player rank and hitting Prestige.

If you want competitive skill-based play — Search and Destroy and Collateral are where the highest-skill ceiling lives. Understanding how visual recoil reduction works matters a lot more in these modes where every shot counts.

If you like big battles — Ground War: Combat Outpost is the one to hit. It’s a genuinely different experience from 6v6 and worth trying at least a few times even if you prefer smaller modes.
