TL;DR
- Metal roof hatch doors are ability barriers scattered across Manhattan’s rooftops.
- You need the Ground Slam combat ability to break them open.
- Get Ground Slam by defeating the Dancer boss in the West Incursion Zone Theater Hall and choosing it as your reward.
- Alternatively, use the Crush Aberrant form with a charged attack to smash them open.
- If you picked Push instead of Ground Slam, you can respec using a Reset Item at the Mural in the Gap.
- Loot inside hatch rooms includes Source, upgrade materials, and occasionally Power Upgrade Points.
As you explore Hiss-infested Manhattan in Control Resonant, you will spot metal hatch doors sitting on the rooftops of buildings and structures across every zone. Check them on your map and you will see they are marked as ability barriers. That means you cannot force them open early. You need a specific ability or attack to break through. This guide explains exactly which ability you need, how to get it, and what to do if you already made the wrong choice at the boss.
What Are Metal Roof Hatch Doors in Control Resonant
Metal roof hatch doors are a type of environmental barrier in Control Resonant. They sit on top of buildings, marked by yellow caution stripes. On the map they show up as ability barriers, meaning they are permanently locked until you have the right tool.
They are not puzzles. There is no code or switch to find. You just need the correct ability equipped and then a single move to smash them open. Inside you will find loot — usually Source, upgrade materials, and sometimes rarer rewards worth stopping for.
How to Open Metal Roof Hatch Doors in Control Resonant
There are two ways to open metal roof hatch doors. The main method is using the Ground Slam combat ability. The second method is using the Crush Aberrant form. Both work. Here is how each one works.
Method 1 – Use Ground Slam
Ground Slam is the primary way to break open rooftop hatch doors in Control Resonant. It is a combat ability that lets Dylan slam into the ground from mid-air. The ability deals more damage the higher up Dylan is when the slam connects, which also makes it useful in normal combat.
To use it on a hatch door, climb or jump up to get above the hatch, then jump into the air and activate Ground Slam. Dylan will slam straight down into the metal door and break it open. You can then drop inside to collect the loot.
Method 2 – Use the Crush Aberrant Form
If you chose Push instead of Ground Slam after the Dancer boss fight, you are not stuck. The Crush Aberrant form can also smash open metal hatch doors. It is a hammer-shaped form that deals Blunt-type damage with enough force to break through the barriers.
Equip Crush as your Secondary Aberrant form. Then approach a hatch door, stand on top of it, and hold down the Secondary form button (Y / Triangle / right mouse click) to charge up the attack. Release it and the door breaks open.
If you did not pick Crush during the prologue, you can still unlock it through the Aberrant skill tree using resources you collect as you play.

How to Get Ground Slam in Control Resonant
Ground Slam is unlocked by defeating the Dancer, the West Incursion Zone Resonant boss. Here is the full unlock chain to get there.
Step 1 – Unlock the West Incursion Zone Resonant Quest

When you reach the Watchtower and meet Zoe early in the game, you can interact with various location prompts in her office. Select the West Incursion side and speak with Zoe to add the West Incursion Zone Resonant quest to your log.
Step 2 – Get the Shift Ability First
Before you can reach the Dancer, you must complete The Incursion Fault in the West Incursion Zone parking lot. This gives you the Shift traversal ability, which lets Dylan align his gravity with anomalies and walk on rotated surfaces. Without Shift, the route to the Theater Hall is blocked.
Our guide on completing Faults and getting traversal abilities in Control Resonant covers how these work if you get stuck.
Step 3 – Reach the Theater Hall
With Shift unlocked, head to the Theater Hall in the West Incursion Zone. The Dancer boss waits on the stage. Enter through the tear in the stage curtain and the fight will begin.
Step 4 – Defeat the Dancer Boss
The Dancer has two phases. In phase one, watch for the end of its long attack strings and punish the recovery window. In phase two, it goes airborne and two audience puppets enter. Keep moving sideways through its spinning attacks — one dodge is usually not enough. Wait for the full animation to end before hitting back.
Step 5 – Choose Ground Slam as Your Reward
After defeating the Dancer, you get to choose between two combat abilities:
- Ground Slam – Slams enemies from the air. Damage and area scale with height. Costs 630 Power. Deals 230–460 damage and 20–30 Falter. Also opens metal roof hatch doors.
- Push – Sends enemies flying backward, off ledges, or into hazards. Costs 200 Power. Deals 50–100 damage and 5–15 Falter. Easier to weave into fights but cannot open hatch doors.
Choose Ground Slam. It is the only combat ability in the game that can break open metal roof hatch doors. Push cannot do it. If you are an aggressive or melee-focused player, Ground Slam also fits that build much better thanks to its high burst damage and Falter output, especially when used from height in Manhattan’s very vertical zones.

What If You Already Chose Push Instead of Ground Slam
Do not worry if you picked Push and now realize you want to access hatch doors. You can respec using a Reset Item at the Mural in the Gap. Every Resonant boss after the Artist drops a Reset Item when defeated. Spend one at the Gap Mural to swap your Push for Ground Slam and unlock access to every hatch door you missed.
In the meantime, the Crush Aberrant form mentioned above is your backup option for hatch doors while you work toward the respec.

What Loot Is Behind Metal Roof Hatch Doors
Each metal hatch door leads to a sealed room or basement area below the rooftop. Inside you will typically find:
- Source – The core crafting and upgrade currency in the game.
- Upgrade materials – Used for Aberrant form upgrades and talent unlocks.
- Patterned items – Collectible lore materials that fill in the backstory of the Hiss invasion.
The loot is worth collecting, especially early to mid game when Source is tight. Make it a habit to Ground Slam any hatch you see on your way through a zone rather than coming back for them later.

Where to Find Metal Roof Hatch Doors
Metal roof hatch doors appear across multiple zones in Manhattan. They are easy to spot once you know what to look for — yellow caution stripes on a rooftop hatch, usually above or near a building you have already explored on foot. Check your map for the ability barrier icon to find ones you may have skipped.
They appear in the West Incursion Zone, Central, Downtown, and other regions. Some are very close to story areas while others are tucked away in harder-to-reach spots that reward thorough exploration.
If you are navigating the West Incursion Zone and want to clear it fully before moving on, check out the Crossing the Threshold walkthrough and the Urban Survival quest walkthrough to catch everything in the zone in one run.
Other Ability Barriers in Control Resonant
Metal hatch doors are just one type of ability barrier in Control Resonant. Other barriers require different traversal or combat abilities that you unlock as the story progresses. If you are running into blocked areas that are not hatch doors, they likely need a different ability you have not unlocked yet.
Other common ability barriers include walls that require Reach to grapple past, and gravity-shifted paths that need Shift. For puzzles and barriers tied to specific zones, these guides will help:

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Ground Slam
Ground Slam is more than just a key to open hatch doors. It is a strong offensive ability that gets better the more you invest in positioning during combat. Here are a few ways to use it well:
- Use height whenever you can. The higher Dylan is when he slams, the bigger the damage and the wider the blast area. Platforms, ledges, and rooftops all work in your favour.
- Pair it with Falter. Ground Slam applies 20–30 Falter on hit. Use it to interrupt tough enemies and then follow up with melee.
- Use it as a fight opener. Dropping into a group of enemies from above with Ground Slam is a fast way to chunk multiple targets before they can react.
- Check for Status Spread talent. If unlocked, Ground Slam can spread existing status effects like Burn or Infected to nearby enemies it hits.

Keycard Access and Other Locked Doors
Not every locked door in Control Resonant is an ability barrier. Some rooms and areas require a keycard of a specific clearance level to open. If a door has a keycard reader instead of a hatch lock, you need the right card, not Ground Slam. These guides cover the keycards you will need:
