Destiny 2 Burning Ambition Perk Effect

    TL;DR

    • Burning Ambition is a Solar weapon perk that applies Scorch after sustained direct hits.
    • It was introduced with The Edge of Fate expansion and is now on 66+ weapons.
    • Once active, it also stacks additional Scorch on already-Scorched targets with each direct hit.
    • The number of hits required to trigger it equals roughly 55% of your weapon’s base magazine size.
    • Ember of Ashes increases Scorch applied by 50%, making it significantly stronger.
    • It appears on both Legendary and Exotic weapons — The Lament and Skyburner’s Oath both gained it through Monument of Triumph catalysts.
    • It pairs best with Incandescent, Solar grenade builds, and sustained-fire weapons that do not need to swap often.

Burning Ambition is a weapon perk that turns sustained fire into a Scorch engine. It was introduced with The Edge of Fate expansion and added to a wide range of Solar weapons, and it has since appeared on Exotic catalysts in the Monument of Triumph update as well. If you run a Solar subclass and want to build around Ignition uptime, understanding exactly how this perk works is essential. This guide covers the full mechanic, the numbers behind it, every notable weapon that has it, and the best ways to use it in 2026.

What Does the Burning Ambition Perk Do in Destiny 2?

Burning Ambition applies Scorch to targets after you land enough sustained direct hits with the weapon. Once the hit threshold is reached, the initial Scorch application counts as weapon damage. After that, every additional direct hit on a Scorched target continues to stack more Scorch on a 0.5-second cooldown, pushing the target closer to an Ignition.

The exact numbers differ by weapon type. For most weapons, the trigger requires hitting roughly 55% of the weapon’s base magazine size. For Bows, the threshold is just two direct hits. For Swords, it is three. The hit counter persists even if you stow the weapon, so you do not need to keep it out continuously — you can swap away and swap back without losing your progress toward the threshold.

Once the perk is active and the target is already Scorched, primary weapons apply 10 additional Scorch per direct hit (on a 0.5-second cooldown), and special and power weapons apply 20. Ember of Ashes increases all of these numbers by 50%, making primary weapons apply 15 Scorch per hit and special or power weapons apply 30. For any Solar build built around Ignition explosions, Ember of Ashes is the Fragment that turns Burning Ambition from useful to exceptional.

    Trigger Condition

How Does the Burning Ambition Hit Threshold Work?

The trigger threshold scales with your weapon’s base magazine size — not the current magazine after mods or perks. Because the requirement is tied to magazine size, boosting your mag through perks like Appended Mag or Overflow increases the number of hits you need to land before Burning Ambition first activates. This is an important detail for god roll planning: if you want Burning Ambition to trigger as fast as possible, smaller base magazines can actually be an advantage for the initial proc.

Community testing at the Tower Shooting Range with an Agape Hand Cannon confirmed this mechanic. An Agape with a magazine of 18 triggers Burning Ambition on the sixth burst, which is 12 hits. Increasing the same weapon’s magazine to 24 raises the trigger point to eight bursts — 16 hits. Weakspot hits do not make Burning Ambition trigger faster.

Once the threshold is passed on the first activation, the ongoing Scorch stacking on already-Scorched targets fires every 0.5 seconds per direct hit. This cooldown is short enough that fast-firing weapons — auto rifles, SMGs, pulse rifles — can stack Scorch very rapidly and push targets to Ignition quickly.

What Weapons Have Burning Ambition in Destiny 2?

Burning Ambition appears on over 66 weapons in Destiny 2 as of 2026. It is available on both randomly rolled Legendary weapons and as a catalyst perk on several Exotic weapons updated through the Monument of Triumph. Here are the most notable options.

    Legendary Weapons With Burning Ambition

Several strong Legendary weapons can roll Burning Ambition as a fourth-column perk. The best performers in 2026 include:

    • The Ringing Nail (Auto Rifle): One of the best Solar auto rifles in the game. Burning Ambition plays off Incandescent to enable rapid Ignitions, making it a top perk pick in the fourth column alongside Onslaught. The Ringing Nail is one of the few weapons that can have Incandescent in column three, freeing the fourth column for Burning Ambition — a rare and powerful combination.
    • Ahab Char (Auto Rifle): One of the most accessible weapons with Burning Ambition, dropping from Portal activities, which means even players without expansions can get it. A solid starting point for testing the perk.
    • Agape (Hand Cannon): A Solar Heavy Burst Hand Cannon with high Impact. It can roll Heal Clip with Burning Ambition, which pairs well with the perk’s sustained-fire nature and gives survivability on kills.
    • Yeartide Apex (SMG): A Solar 900 RPM SMG available from the Tenet of Bravery vendor. Burning Ambition appears as a fourth-column option alongside Incandescent for dedicated grenade-focused Solar builds — it stacks Scorch on precision hits rather than spreading it like Incandescent does, giving a different but complementary use case.
    • Veillantif-D (Pulse Rifle): A Solar Rocket Pulse Rifle with Burning Ambition in the second column. It pairs with Incandescent in the same perk pool for full Solar synergy on a single weapon.

    Exotic Weapons With Burning Ambition

The Monument of Triumph update added Burning Ambition as a catalyst perk to two Exotic weapons:

    • Skyburner’s Oath: Skyburner’s Oath received both Incandescent and Burning Ambition as catalyst perks, making it the best Solar add-clear Exotic weapon after the update — it ignites targets, spreads Scorch, and pushes further Ignitions in a self-sustaining loop. The handling stat also increased by 20. This is arguably the strongest implementation of Burning Ambition in the game right now.
    • The Lament: The Exotic Solar Sword gained Burning Ambition through its Monument of Triumph catalyst. The Lament already deals heavy sustained damage through its revved chainsaw attacks, and Burning Ambition stacks Scorch rapidly on bosses and major targets during that sustained contact window. The Wolfsbane Exotic Axe also has a Burning Ambition Refit catalyst that works similarly — sustained light attacks into Scorch stacking.

Burning Ambition vs Incandescent — What Is the Difference?

Both perks involve Scorch, but they work very differently and serve different roles in a Solar build.

Incandescent triggers on kills. When you defeat an enemy, it spreads Scorch to all nearby targets in an area. It is an AoE perk designed for add-clear — killing one enemy starts burning everything around it. It does not require sustained fire and activates instantly on the kill without any hit threshold.

Burning Ambition triggers on sustained direct hits against a single target. It does not spread Scorch to nearby enemies. Instead, it Scorches the target you are actively shooting and then continues to stack Scorch on top of that target with every subsequent hit. It is designed for single-target pressure — pushing one enemy toward Ignition faster than you could by landing kills alone.

The two perks are not in direct competition. They excel in different scenarios and combine well on the same build. Incandescent clears waves of adds. Burning Ambition accelerates the Ignition of champions, minibosses, and any target that needs more Scorch stacking than a single kill can provide. Weapons that can roll both perks in separate columns — like the Ringing Nail — are exceptional because they handle both roles at once.

How to Build Around Burning Ambition in Destiny 2

Burning Ambition is a Solar-only perk that requires sustained fire to activate. The best builds around it share a few common elements: a Solar subclass, Ember of Ashes in the fragment slot, and either ability synergy or a second weapon that provides initial Scorch to speed up the Ignition loop.

    Use Ember of Ashes

This is the most important Fragment for any Burning Ambition build. Ember of Ashes increases the amount of Scorch applied by 50%. Primary weapons go from applying 10 Scorch per hit to 15. Special and power weapons go from 20 to 30. The Ignition threshold in Destiny 2 is 100 Scorch stacks — with Ember of Ashes active, you reach it faster from fewer hits. No other fragment directly amplifies Burning Ambition this much.

    Primer Your Targets First

Burning Ambition applies Scorch on the initial hit threshold crossing, but it stacks much faster once the target is already Scorched. Pre-Scorching targets before you open fire shortens the time to Ignition significantly. A few reliable ways to do this:

    • Throw an Incendiary Grenade before shooting. An Incendiary Grenade plus Burning Ambition hits is enough to trigger an Ignition without Ember of Ashes.
    • Use Hammer Strike on Titan before firing. Hammer Strike with a Burning Ambition proc will trigger an Ignition without Ember of Ashes.
    • Swap to a weapon with Incandescent after a kill to spread initial Scorch, then switch back to your Burning Ambition weapon to stack it.

Team Play — Use a Scorch Primer

When playing in a team, weapons like Tommy’s Matchbook with its catalyst can serve as an excellent primer for weapons with Burning Ambition. The team’s weapons feed off the Scorch they inflict, causing back-to-back Ignitions on tanky targets. Having one player dedicated to Scorch application while others run Burning Ambition weapons is a strong team composition for raid boss encounters and champion-heavy content.

    Pick the Right Weapon Type

Burning Ambition is stronger on sustained-fire weapons. Auto rifles, SMGs, and pulse rifles trigger the hit threshold fastest and continue stacking Scorch at the highest rate after activation. The Ringing Nail auto rifle with Incandescent and Burning Ambition is currently one of the best single-weapon implementations of this perk because it handles both spreading Scorch on kills and stacking it on active targets at the same time.

For boss-damage scenarios, The Lament or Skyburner’s Oath with Burning Ambition through their catalyst applies massive Scorch stacks during sustained damage windows. Skyburner’s Oath in particular — with both Incandescent and Burning Ambition from its catalyst — runs a near-automatic Ignition loop in Solar builds.

Is Burning Ambition Worth Using in 2026?

Yes, especially for Solar subclass players. Burning Ambition fills a gap that Incandescent cannot cover — single-target Scorch stacking. For any content where you need to Ignite a tough target quickly without relying on nearby kills, it is the best tool available. The 0.5-second cooldown on Scorch application per hit is fast enough on full-auto weapons that you can push a target to Ignition in a matter of seconds once it is active.

It is not the right pick for every situation. If you are focused on clearing large groups of ads, Incandescent is still the better perk because it spreads on kills rather than requiring sustained fire on one enemy. But if your build leans into grenade uptime, Solar Ignition chains, or champion pressure, Burning Ambition is a valuable second layer of Scorch production that makes the loop significantly more consistent.

    Burning Ambition Perk FAQ

Does Burning Ambition Work on Any Subclass?

No. Burning Ambition applies Scorch, which is a Solar verb. It only works on Solar weapons and only benefits Solar builds that can take advantage of Scorch and Ignition. Using a weapon with Burning Ambition on an Arc or Void build applies the Scorch damage, but you cannot build around it without Solar fragment support.

Does Burning Ambition Stack With Incandescent?

Yes. They are complementary, not competing. Incandescent spreads Scorch to nearby enemies on kills. Burning Ambition stacks Scorch on the target you are actively shooting. Running both on the same build — through Skyburner’s Oath or a weapon like The Ringing Nail — covers both roles and makes the Ignition loop extremely consistent.

Does the Hit Counter Reset When You Stow the Weapon?

The hit counter persists through stow. You can swap to another weapon and come back without losing your progress toward the trigger threshold. This makes it easier to weave Burning Ambition weapons into a standard rotation without being punished for swapping.

Does Enhanced Burning Ambition Make a Difference?

Yes. The Enhanced version of Burning Ambition decreases the number of direct hits required to trigger the perk by one — for Bows it becomes one hit, for Swords two hits, and other weapons get a one-hit reduction off their base threshold. On weapons where the threshold is already low, this makes the initial activation nearly instant. On crafted weapons, Enhanced Burning Ambition is worth the level investment.

Does Burning Ambition Work in PvP?

It has a reduced value in PvP. Primary weapons apply only 4 Scorch per direct hit in PvP (compared to 10 in PvE), and the sustained fire required to activate it makes it difficult to land the full threshold against a moving opponent. Scorch and Ignition in PvP can finish off low-health targets, but there are more reliable PvP perks for most situations.
