TL;DR
- Phoneutria Fera is the first Spread Shot hand cannon in Destiny 2 — a 100 RPM Solar primary that fires a short-range spread of pellets like a shotgun while using primary ammo.
- It’s A-Tier in both PvE and PvP and among the strongest primaries introduced with The Edge of Fate expansion.
- The top PvE melee roll is Proximity Power + One-Two Punch — stack Melee stat on kills, then hit harder with the next powered melee for a devastating loop.
- The top PvE general roll is Threat Detector + Incandescent — reliable add-clear with Solar Scorch spread plus massive reload and handling buffs while surrounded.
- The Tenacity Origin Trait is exceptional — final blows while surrounded grant bonus weapon damage, reload speed, and handling until you die, scaling with how aggressive you play.
- Phoneutria Fera was originally from Arms Week and later Call to Arms events. As of Monument of Triumph (June 2026), it’s permanently available via Pinnacle Ops and Fireteam Ops engrams at the Tenet of Bravery.
- Phoneutria Fera is not craftable — you must farm rolls until you land the right perk combination.
Destiny 2 Phoneutria Fera is the weapon that introduced the Spread Shot archetype to the game — a hand cannon that fires a pellet spread instead of a single projectile, plays like a close-range primary shotgun, and uses primary ammo. Its unique Tenacity Origin Trait rewards aggressive close-range play with a compounding buff that only resets on death. This guide covers every god roll, what each perk does in practice, and how to farm it efficiently in 2026.
What Is the Spread Shot Archetype?
Spread Shot is a hand cannon archetype that fires a burst of pellets rather than a single projectile — the same mechanic as a shotgun, applied to a primary ammo weapon. Phoneutria Fera fires at 100 RPM and delivers all pellets in a single trigger pull. The effective range is shorter than a standard hand cannon, but within that range the per-shot damage output is significantly higher because multiple pellets land per pull rather than one.
The practical feel is closer to a primary-ammo shotgun than a traditional hand cannon. The weapon works best at point-blank to close range where all pellets connect. At mid-range, pellet spread reduces total damage significantly. This makes Phoneutria Fera ideal for aggressive, close-range PvE builds — clearing ads at melee distance, supplementing melee abilities, or running a tight-quarters loadout without burning Special ammo on shotgun fires.
The key mechanical advantage over a shotgun is the ammo type. Spread Shot hand cannons use primary ammo, which regenerates freely in Monument of Triumph. You can fire Phoneutria Fera indefinitely without ever running short, which is something no shotgun can offer. This makes it a reliable aggressive primary for players who want close-range stopping power without managing Special ammo bricks.
Phoneutria Fera Origin Traits
Phoneutria Fera rolls with two Origin Traits — the specific one on your drop is random:
- Tenacity: When targets are nearby, final blows grant bonus weapon damage, reload speed, and handling. Crucially, this buff persists until you die — it doesn’t expire after a few seconds like most perk buffs. Once you build stacks by getting kills while surrounded, the buff compounds for the entire encounter or until you respawn. In high-density PvE content this becomes a near-permanent bonus that stacks damage, handles the weapon’s low base Reload Speed, and improves handling for faster ADS. This is the preferred Origin Trait by a significant margin.
- Hakke Breach Armaments: Increased damage against vehicles, turrets, barricades, and Stasis crystals. Situationally useful but nowhere near as impactful as Tenacity for general play. If you have a choice, prioritise Tenacity rolls.

Phoneutria Fera Full Perk Pool
Perk 1 (Column 1):
- Proximity Power – Final blows while enemies are nearby grant stacking Melee stat bonuses (up to 3 stacks, 15 Melee stat per stack). The bonus persists on the Melee stat until you swap weapons or die. Core perk for melee-focused builds — every close-range kill stacks toward heavier punch damage.
- Threat Detector – Greatly increases reload speed, stability, and handling when enemies are within close proximity. The single best general-use perk in the first column. Phoneutria Fera’s base Reload Speed is poor, and Threat Detector’s condition — enemies nearby — is almost always active when you’re actually using this weapon. The bonus activates at up to three enemy proximity tiers, scaling higher the more enemies are close.
- Barrel Constrictor – After a final blow, narrows the pellet spread for a short duration. This tightens your shot pattern after each kill, extending effective range and making it easier to land all pellets on the next target. Particularly useful for chaining kills since the spread resets between shots but the buff bridges the gap between engagements.
- Slideshot – Sliding partially reloads the magazine and temporarily boosts range and stability. The reload portion counters the weapon’s slow base Reload Speed, and the range bonus extends effective pellet coverage. Useful for builds that slide frequently. Pairs naturally with Titan Thruster and Hunter Dodge-slide combinations.
- Threat Remover – Dealing damage with all pellets in a spread increases reload speed, handling, and stability. Requires landing every pellet, which is achievable at point-blank range but inconsistent mid-range. Higher execution requirement than Threat Detector for a similar category of benefit.
- Transcendent Moment – Final blows grant bonus stats based on weapon element alignment. Solar (Phoneutria Fera’s element) grants stability and handling. While Transcendent, both element bonuses apply. Best in Prismatic builds where Transcendence is frequently active.

Perk 2 (Column 2):
- One-Two Punch – Hitting a target with every pellet in a shot significantly increases melee damage for a brief window. At Spread Shot archetype the buff on landing all pellets boosts the next powered melee by 75%. The Phoneutria Fera One-Two Punch buff has slightly shorter duration than on shotguns, but the damage multiplier is the same. This is the #1 pick for melee-focused builds on all three classes.
- Incandescent – Defeating a target spreads Scorch to nearby enemies. More powerful combatants and Guardians cause Scorch in a larger radius. The go-to Solar add-clear perk — chain kills in groups and every death becomes an AoE Scorch event that can chain into Ignition. Works on any Solar build without needing specific Fragments or Exotic support.
- Surrounded – Increased damage when three or more enemies are nearby. The bonus is higher than Swashbuckler at peak stacks, but requires maintaining close proximity to multiple enemies. Pairs naturally with Proximity Power in builds that want to fight in crowds — both perks key off the same positioning.
- Swashbuckler – Increased damage from melee kills and weapon kills with this weapon, stacking up to 5 times for approximately 33% bonus damage. Easier to stack than Surrounded and doesn’t require maintaining enemy proximity — just keep killing. Good general-purpose roll if you want damage without the positioning requirement of Surrounded.
- Frenzy – Being in combat for an extended period grants increased damage, reload speed, and handling. Entirely passive — no conditions beyond staying in a fight. The weakest damage perk in this column but the lowest-effort one to maintain. A Frenzy roll with Threat Detector is a reliable workhorse for players who want consistent performance without build investment.
- Binary Orbit – Increased handling and range while Transcendent, or when near allies with a different damage type. Best in mixed-element fireteam situations or Prismatic builds with frequent Transcendence uptime. Niche but competitive in the right setup.
Phoneutria Fera PvE God Roll
Roll 1: Proximity Power + One-Two Punch (Best Melee Build Roll)
- Barrel: Arrowhead Brake (Handling and Recoil Direction) or Fluted Barrel (Handling and Stability)
- Magazine: Flared Magwell (Stability and Reload Speed) or Appended Mag (extra ammo capacity)
- Perk 1: Proximity Power
- Perk 2: One-Two Punch
- Origin Trait: Tenacity (required for this roll to reach its ceiling)
- Masterwork: Handling or Range
This is the definitive melee build roll and the reason Phoneutria Fera became a priority farm when Arms Week launched. The gameplay loop works like this: get close to enemies, kill them with Phoneutria Fera, stack Proximity Power (up to +45 Melee stat at 3 stacks), then hit the next enemy with a powered melee for 75% bonus damage from One-Two Punch. With Tenacity active from previous kills, weapon damage and reload are also buffed passively throughout the encounter.
This roll is elite on Titan Synthoceps builds — Synthoceps amplifies melee damage when surrounded, and Proximity Power pushes the Melee stat further, stacking on top of each other. The combination of Synthoceps empowerment, Proximity Power stat bonus, and One-Two Punch 75% melee damage multiplier creates some of the highest melee damage output achievable with a primary weapon setup. Warlock Karnstein Armlets (melee kills grant health and Restoration) and Hunter Combination Blow builds also work extremely well — every Phoneutria Fera kill into melee becomes a sustained damage and survivability chain.
Roll 2: Threat Detector + Incandescent (Best All-Around PvE Roll)
- Barrel: Arrowhead Brake or Fluted Barrel
- Magazine: Flared Magwell
- Perk 1: Threat Detector
- Perk 2: Incandescent
- Origin Trait: Tenacity
- Masterwork: Reload Speed
This is the general-purpose Solar add-clear roll that works in any content without requiring a specific melee build. Threat Detector essentially fixes Phoneutria Fera’s worst stat — Reload Speed — by triggering automatically whenever enemies are close, which is always when you’re actually shooting this weapon. Incandescent then turns every kill into a Scorch AoE, with higher-tier enemies spreading Scorch in a significantly larger radius.
The Tenacity Origin Trait multiplies the value of this roll. The first few kills build Tenacity stacks (weapon damage + reload + handling until death). By the third kill, you’re running a weapon that handles well, shoots hard, reloads fast from Threat Detector, and Scorches every nearby enemy on each kill. In Solar builds running Ember of Ashes (extra Scorch stacks on application), this roll generates Ignition chains without ever needing a grenade or melee. Works on all three Solar subclasses.
Roll 3: Proximity Power + Surrounded (Best Crowd Damage Roll)
- Barrel: Arrowhead Brake
- Magazine: Flared Magwell
- Perk 1: Proximity Power
- Perk 2: Surrounded
- Origin Trait: Tenacity
- Masterwork: Handling
This roll is designed specifically for high-density content where you’re consistently surrounded by three or more enemies — Nightfalls, Grandmaster Ops, and Pantheon encounter rooms. Surrounded’s damage bonus exceeds Swashbuckler and Incandescent at full activation, and Proximity Power’s Melee stat stacking rounds out the build loop for ability-focused play. Both perks key off the same positioning condition — being near enemies — which means they’re both active or both inactive at the same time. When they’re both up alongside Tenacity, Phoneutria Fera hits harder than most primary weapons in the game at close range.
Roll 4: Threat Detector + Swashbuckler (Reliable Workhorse Roll)
- Barrel: Fluted Barrel
- Magazine: Flared Magwell
- Perk 1: Threat Detector
- Perk 2: Swashbuckler
- Origin Trait: Tenacity or Hakke Breach Armaments
- Masterwork: Reload Speed
A low-maintenance roll for players who want consistent performance without positioning requirements. Threat Detector handles reload and handling passively. Swashbuckler stacks a damage bonus from both kills with this weapon and melee kills, reaching up to 33% damage bonus at 5 stacks. No surrounding requirement, no pellet-landing requirement — just kill things and stay in combat. Works in any content, pairs with any subclass, and reliably outperforms standard hand cannons of the same archetype.
Phoneutria Fera PvP God Roll
- Barrel: Hammer-Forged Rifling (Range) or Smallbore (Range and Stability)
- Magazine: Accurized Rounds (Range) or Ricochet Rounds (Range and Stability)
- Perk 1: Slideshot or Threat Detector
- Perk 2: Swashbuckler
- Masterwork: Range
Phoneutria Fera in PvP is a close-range specialist. Its effective range is shorter than most hand cannons but its damage output within that range is very high — it can reliably two-shot Guardians within 10 metres when all pellets connect. The core challenge is range, which is why Hammer-Forged Rifling and Accurized Rounds are the first picks for barrel and magazine.
Slideshot is the preferred column one perk — it partially reloads the weapon on slide and boosts range and stability. Sliding before engagement is natural in close-range PvP, making Slideshot essentially a free reload and range extension at the start of every fight. Threat Detector is the alternative if you fight in chaotic multi-enemy situations like Control or Rift.
Swashbuckler stacks damage from both weapon kills and melee kills. In PvP, chaining a melee into Phoneutria Fera shots — or vice versa — stacks Swashbuckler quickly for a compressed time-to-kill. There is no strong column two alternative in PvP; Surrounded requires three nearby enemies which is inconsistent, and Incandescent’s Scorch at 10% effectiveness isn’t a PvP factor. Swashbuckler is the default pick.
Phoneutria Fera is competitive in PvP but faces stiff competition from dedicated Trials weapons like the Aureus Neutralizer. Its ceiling is high in aggressive melee-led playstyles, and the two-shot kill potential within 10m rewards players who close distance effectively. It’s not a meta-defining PvP weapon, but it’s legitimately viable for players who enjoy aggressive shotgun-hybrid play with primary ammo.
How to Get Phoneutria Fera in 2026
Phoneutria Fera was originally exclusive to Arms Week in July 2025, then returned during Call to Arms events. Since Monument of Triumph launched on June 9, 2026, the weapon is permanently available through the Tenet of Bravery vendor in the Tower Courtyard as part of the event and playlist weapon engram pools.
Step 1 – Unlock the Tenet of Bravery
Go to the Tower Courtyard and interact with the Monument of Triumph. Make any purchase from the Tenet of Bravery vendor — a single 2-Mark engram is enough. This unlocks all four Tenet vendors (Bravery, Devotion, Sacrifice, Death).
Step 2 – Earn Legendary Marks
Legendary Marks are earned by completing Monument of Triumph Triumphs. You receive 50 free Marks on first login after June 9, 2026. Scenic spot Triumphs on destinations (visiting specific locations) provide fast Marks with zero combat required. See our Legendary Marks guide for the full farming priority list.
Step 3 – Buy Pinnacle Ops or Fireteam Ops Engrams
Phoneutria Fera is part of the Pinnacle Ops and Fireteam Ops weapon pools at the Tenet of Bravery. Each engram costs 2 Legendary Marks with no weekly cap. Every drop comes at Tier 5 with a full upgrade path — no outdated lower-tier versions. Because the weapon is not craftable, you need to buy engrams until the right perk combination drops. Check the engram preview at the vendor to confirm you’re buying from the correct pool before spending.
Phoneutria Fera also drops naturally during Pinnacle Ops and Fireteam Ops activities in the Portal. Running Grade A clears of these activities generates drops alongside the engram purchases. See our easiest level modifiers guide for the fastest modifier setups to hit Grade A in Pinnacle Ops — Grade A is where Phoneutria Fera drops at full Tier 5 quality.
Phoneutria Fera vs Other Solar Primaries in 2026
Phoneutria Fera’s main competition in the Solar primary slot is the Yeartide Apex Solar SMG. The choice between them comes down to playstyle and build.
Yeartide Apex with Heal Clip + Incandescent is better for pure Solar add-clear builds where healing on kill and Scorch chaining from range matter more than burst damage. It works at 15+ metre range where Phoneutria Fera starts losing pellet consistency.
Phoneutria Fera is better when the build centres on melee ability damage — Proximity Power + One-Two Punch creates a melee damage multiplier that Yeartide Apex cannot replicate. It’s also better in content where you consistently fight at 0–10 metres, like tight-corridor Grandmaster rooms or Pantheon encounter spaces where enemies push aggressively.
Run Phoneutria Fera in melee builds. Run Yeartide Apex in general Solar add-clear builds. Both are A-Tier primaries — the one that fits your build better is the correct choice. For a full look at pairing these primaries with the best Special and Heavy weapons, see our armor mods guide for how to set up the Gauntlet and Class Item slots to maximise the melee damage loops that Phoneutria Fera enables.
