TL;DR
- Threading the Needle means driving between two NPC cars simultaneously without touching either one.
- The best location is the highway ring road around the perimeter of the main island – high traffic density, multiple lanes, consistent car pairing.
- Drive against the flow of oncoming traffic in the right lane – oncoming cars pair up more often than same-direction traffic.
- If traffic is sparse, switch to Horizon Solo – it replaces real players with Drivatars and dramatically increases road traffic.
- For the Mini in the Middle daily challenge, use the 1965 Mini Cooper S – smallest body, most forgiving gaps.
- Even a light brush against a car invalidates the skill – commit fully through the gap without hesitating.
The Threading the Needle skill in Forza Horizon 6 almost never triggers naturally during normal play. Most drivers go hours without seeing the notification because the conditions needed to earn it simply do not come up on country roads or in races. But when a daily or seasonal challenge asks for it – most commonly for the Mini in the Middle Festival Playlist challenge – players suddenly need to understand exactly what triggers it and where to go. This guide explains the mechanic clearly, gives you the best location in the game to earn it reliably, and covers the specific car tips you need for the Mini version of the challenge.
What Is the Threading the Needle Skill?
Threading the Needle fires when you drive between two pedestrian cars simultaneously, squeezing through the gap without making contact with either vehicle. Both directions of traffic count, so you can pull it off going with the flow or against it.
Threading the Needle is awarded when you drive between two NPC traffic vehicles at high speed without making contact with either car. Unlike Near Miss skills, this challenge requires two vehicles positioned close enough together for your car to pass directly through the center.
The key distinction from a Near Miss skill:
- Near Miss: pass close to a single car without touching it
- Threading the Needle: pass between two cars at the same time without touching either
Hard requirements: zero collisions throughout the entire process. Even brushing against the rearview mirror will immediately invalidate the skill. This is why so many players attempt it and fail – a tiny graze that barely registers as a collision in normal driving will still cancel the skill.
Threading the Needle feeds into your active skill chain just like any other skill, stacking multipliers on top of Near Miss bonuses, speed skills, and any other chain you have built up. For more on skill chains and how to max them out, see our Car Mastery skill trees guide.
Best Location – The Highway Ring Road
Unlike many other driving skills, Threading the Needle depends heavily on naturally occurring traffic patterns rather than pure driving ability. The location you choose makes far more difference than your driving technique.
The easiest way to get the Threading the Needle skill is to head to the highways that run around the perimeter of the main island of Japan. They have plenty of cars to drive between, and the multiple lanes provide plenty of space to find gaps between cars.
Why the highway ring road works better than anywhere else:
- The multiple lanes also have the added benefit of allowing you to drive diagonally between two cars. These spaces are typically a little bit bigger compared to those you will find when two cars are driving side by side in two lanes.
- Traffic density is consistently high – you encounter pairs of cars frequently without having to search for them.
- Avoid narrow, sparsely populated rural roads. You simply will not be able to form a side-by-side traffic flow. The best location is the outer ring highway of the map.
Fast travel to any point on the main highway circle and start driving. Within a minute or two of cruising at speed, opportunities to thread the needle will appear regularly. Drive Against Traffic for the Best Results
The direction you drive on the highway matters more than most players realise.
Head to the main highway ring road and drive against traffic in the right lane. Oncoming cars tend to travel in pairs more often than same-direction traffic, giving you more gap opportunities per minute.
Driving in the opposite direction makes it easier to create a suitable gap. When you drive with traffic, you are chasing cars at similar speeds and waiting for two to sit side by side. When you drive against traffic, every pair of approaching oncoming cars is already moving toward you, closing the distance faster and giving you a constant stream of fresh opportunities.
The approach: get on the highway, face against the flow of traffic, drive at a moderate speed (not so fast you cannot react, not so slow the skill window does not open), and look for two NPC cars approaching side by side. Commit to the gap between them as they close in.
Switch to Horizon Solo if Traffic Is Thin
Online sessions in FH6 can sometimes have inconsistent traffic density depending on server load and how many real players are sharing the road with you.
If online traffic feels inconsistent, switch to Horizon Solo. This mode often makes the challenge much easier because AI Drivatars naturally create ideal passing situations.
To switch: open the pause menu, go to the Online tab, and select Horizon Solo. This swaps live players for Drivatars and fills the roads with consistent AI traffic. The highway becomes noticeably busier immediately, and paired cars appear far more regularly than in a crowded online session where real player cars break up the traffic flow.

Best Cars for Threading the Needle
Vehicle size makes a significant difference for this skill. The narrower your car, the larger the effective gap between two traffic vehicles appears to be.
The 1965 Mini Cooper S is the one to pick for this challenge specifically. It is the smallest of the three Mini options, which makes squeezing through traffic gaps noticeably more forgiving.
The Mini lineup available in FH6 for the Mini in the Middle challenge:
- 1965 Mini Cooper S – smallest body, most recommended, best margin for error in tight gaps
- 2012 MINI John Cooper Works GP – faster on the highway, good handling, slightly wider than the classic
- 2021 MINI John Cooper Works GP – the most efficient option for players already on the highway, recommended for players who want a faster car and are comfortable with the slightly wider body
For any version of the Threading the Needle skill outside the Mini challenge, any compact or mid-size car works. Avoid SUVs, trucks, and wide supercars for this specific task – their extra width makes the gap feel tighter than it actually is and increases the chance of clipping a mirror.
How to Complete the Mini in the Middle Daily Challenge
The Mini in the Middle challenge is the most common Festival Playlist challenge tied to Threading the Needle. It requires earning the skill in any Mini brand car.
Step 1 – Get a Mini
Head to the Autoshow and search for Mini. To complete the Mini in the Middle challenge, you need a car from the Mini lineup in the Autoshow. The 1965 Mini Cooper S is the top pick for this challenge, but any Mini in your garage qualifies.
Step 2 – Switch to Horizon Solo
Open the pause menu, go to Online, and select Horizon Solo. This makes the AI traffic denser and more predictable, giving you better opportunities on the highway.
Step 3 – Go to the Highway Ring Road
Fast travel to any point on the main highway that circles the island. The highway becomes a prime hunting ground for pairs of cars driving side-by-side, allowing you to complete the challenge in a single pass.
Step 4 – Drive Against Traffic
Turn to face oncoming traffic and drive at a comfortable speed. Look for pairs of NPC cars approaching side by side across two lanes. Position your car to aim through the gap between them.
Step 5 – Commit to the Gap
Even experienced drivers occasionally miss the skill prompt. Maintaining confidence and committing to the gap is often more effective than hesitating. Do not swerve at the last moment – commit early and hold your line through the center of the gap. The skill registers the instant you clear both cars without touching either.
Step 6 – Bank Your Skill Chain
After the Threading the Needle skill fires, make sure to bank your skill chain before crashing or stopping. The skill itself earns you XP and credits, but only once the chain is successfully banked. Keep driving smoothly until you find a safe moment to let the chain timer expire naturally.
Why the Skill Is Not Triggering
Here are the most common reasons Threading the Needle fails to register even when you pass between two cars:
- You are on a rural road or mountain pass: Country roads are too sparse. You simply will not find two cars sitting side by side out there. Stick to the highway exclusively for this skill.
- You clipped a mirror or fender: Even brushing against the rearview mirror will immediately invalidate the skill. If the gap closes faster than expected, back off and try the next pair of cars rather than forcing it.
- Only one car was present: The skill requires two cars simultaneously. Passing one car on its own earns a Near Miss at best. Wait for pairs.
- You were going too slowly: The skill requires passing at meaningful speed. Crawling between two stationary cars will not register. Maintain highway speed – around 80 mph or faster.
- Traffic was too sparse: Switch to Horizon Solo and the problem resolves itself on the highway within seconds.
Threading the Needle in Skill Chains
Skills like Threading the Needle feed directly into your skill chain multiplier, which means landing one mid-run can stack nicely with other bonuses. If you are already building a chain with Near Miss skills or speed bonuses, a clean Threading the Needle in the middle of traffic extends that chain and pushes your skill score higher before you bank it.
The highway is ideal for this kind of chaining because you can combine Near Miss skills, Speed skills, and Threading the Needle in quick succession. Once you get comfortable with the motion of passing between traffic pairs, you can build very high skill scores efficiently just from a sustained highway run.

Final Tips for Threading the Needle
- Always use the highway ring road – rural roads and mountain passes will not give you enough paired traffic.
- Drive against the flow of traffic for faster and more frequent opportunities.
- Switch to Horizon Solo if traffic is thin – it takes ten seconds and immediately improves traffic density.
- Use the 1965 Mini Cooper S for the Mini in the Middle challenge – its small body gives you the most room in tight gaps.
- Commit early to the gap – hesitating at the last moment causes you to swerve and clip a car.
- Even a mirror graze counts as a collision – if the gap looks too tight, skip that pair and wait for the next one.
- Once the skill fires, keep driving smoothly until your chain banks – a crash right after would waste the skill points.
Threading the Needle is one of those skills that feels tricky right up until the moment it clicks. Get onto the highway, turn to face oncoming traffic, and within two or three passes you will start to see the gaps open up naturally. Once you land it once, it becomes one of the most repeatable traffic skills in the game.
