TL;DR
- The treasure chest is in the far north of the Sotoyama region, next to a small wooden cabin on the map’s northern boundary.
- Navigate from the Off Piste Wristband event and drive northwest to the topmost road on the map.
- The cabin sits on a side road marked on the map but closed off by a wooden fence – smash through and the chest is right there.
- Approach from the east if the western hillside is giving you trouble – it is a much easier climb.
- Any car works, but an AWD off-road vehicle handles the snowy terrain far better.
- Reward: 100,000 Credits, 3 Festival Playlist points, and 5,000 XP.
The Sotoyama Region Treasure Hunt in Forza Horizon 6 is the Winter challenge for Series 2 Horizon Decades, and it sends you all the way to the farthest north point on the Japan map. The clue image shows a blue chest beside a wooden cabin in a snow-covered mountain setting – which sounds straightforward until you realise the entire Sotoyama region is covered in snow and nearly every building looks similar from a distance. This guide gives you the exact location, the best route in, and every detail you need to grab the 100,000 Credit reward in under two minutes.
What Is the Sotoyama Region Treasure Hunt?
The Sotoyama Region Treasure Hunt is one of the featured activities in Forza Horizon 6’s Series 2 “Horizon Decades” Winter Festival Playlist, giving players an easy opportunity to earn valuable Festival Playlist Points and a substantial Credit reward. Released on July 2, 2026, this Treasure Hunt sends drivers into the snowy mountains of Japan, where a hidden chest awaits beside a secluded ski cabin.
The goal is simple: locate a hidden chest guided only by a photograph. The in-game clue shows a blue chest next to a modest wooden cabin, with snow-capped mountains in the background. Unlike some treasure hunts that require a specific stunt, race, or skill chain first, this one is pure exploration. Get to the location, smash the chest, done.
Sotoyama is the northernmost area of Forza Horizon 6’s fictional Japanese map, a sprawling alpine zone above Takashiro and northeast of Tokyo City. During Winter, every inch is coated in snow, making landmarks harder to spot – but the treasure’s hiding spot is not as remote as it first appears.

Sotoyama Region Treasure Hunt Chest Location
The treasure chest this week is hiding all the way to the top of the map in the Sotoyama region. It is next to a small wooden shack, and on a path which is shown on the map as a road, but it is closed near the shack with a wooden fence.
Here is exactly where to look:
- The chest sits at the very northern edge of Sotoyama, near a small wooden cabin on the map’s northern boundary. Two roads slice through the snow in the far north; the cabin sits between them, tucked away from the main tracks.
- It is almost the farthest north you can go, not far from the Alpine Heights danger sign and the Off Piste Wristband event.
- Drive up the snow-covered mountains in the north, northeast of Sotoyama. Head up the off-shooting road to find the wooden hut. The chest will be sitting right in front of it.
The road leading to the cabin is shown on the map but is blocked at the near end by a wooden fence. You can smash straight through that fence on your approach – it is not a barrier that stops you, just a visual obstacle. Keep going and the chest sits directly in front of the cabin.
How to Get There – Best Routes to the Sotoyama Chest
Method 1 – From the Off Piste Wristband Event (Easiest)
To gain access to this area, head over to the location of the Off Piste Wristband Event and then head straight to the road that is basically the topmost road in the entire map. Keep following this road, and you will soon arrive at the wooden shack.
This is the most reliable route. Fast travel to the Off Piste event if you have it unlocked, then drive northwest along the highest road on the map until you see the wooden cabin. The chest will be visible in front of it once you arrive.
Method 2 – Approach From the East
We had some issues getting up the hill towards the cabin when we tried coming in from the west, so if you have trouble, make sure to find a good off-road car and head in from the east instead.
The eastern approach follows a gentler incline into the northern Sotoyama mountains and avoids the steeper western hillside that can defeat lower-clearance vehicles in the snow. If your first attempt stalls on the way up, turn around and try the eastern road instead.
Method 3 – From Alpine Heights Danger Sign
The combination of the Alpine Heights danger sign and the telltale wooden barriers narrows the search to one specific corner of the map. Set the Alpine Heights danger sign as a waypoint and head toward it. Once you reach that area, look for the side road branching off the main mountain track and follow it to the cabin.

What Car Should You Use?
There is no vehicle requirement for this treasure hunt. Any vehicle can be used; no specific tune is required. That said, Sotoyama in Winter is a genuinely challenging environment to drive in without the right setup.
Using an AWD vehicle with Snow Tyres will make the climb smoother and help you reach the treasure chest much faster. The snow-covered mountain tracks have limited grip, and a rear-wheel-drive car on standard tyres will struggle to maintain momentum on the inclines leading to the cabin.
Recommended car types for Sotoyama:
- AWD rally cars – the best all-round option for the snowy mountain terrain
- AWD SUVs and off-road trucks – high ground clearance and great grip on snow
- Any car with winter tyres fitted – if your preferred car is not AWD, swapping to snow tyres makes a significant difference

Reward for Completing the Sotoyama Treasure Hunt
The rewards for smashing the chest are:
- 100,000 Credits
- 3 Festival Playlist points toward the Winter season and Series 2 overall reward track
- 5,000 XP
Those Festival Playlist points go towards your Series 2 rewards, which include the 1993 Porsche 911 Turbo S Leichtbau and the 2018 Lotus Exige Cup 430. Of course, there are also the Winter cars up for grabs, the 2006 Dodge Ram SRT-10 and the 2003 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning.
Three points from a two-minute drive is one of the best value activities in the entire Winter playlist. The 100,000 Credit reward is also significant – it is a fast way to add to your garage budget without racing. And for stacking Credits beyond this reward, check our how to earn Credits fast guide.
Reading the Treasure Hunt Photo Clue
The photograph’s snowy mountains and simple hut look generic, but the combination of the Alpine Heights danger sign and the telltale wooden barriers narrows the search to one specific corner of the map.
The in-game clue shows a blue chest beside a modest wooden cabin with snow-covered peaks behind it. The visual cue that makes this location unique is the wooden fence barrier across the road in front of the cabin – it appears closed off from the main track, which is what the clue image captures. Once you know what to look for, it is unmistakable on arrival.
The broader treasure hunt system in FH6 works the same way across all regions. For a full guide to the seasonal treasure hunt system and all other treasure hunts available in the game, see our seasonal events and Festival Playlist guide.

Common Issues When Finding the Sotoyama Chest
- Can not make it up the western hillside: This is the most commonly reported issue. Switch to a good off-road car and approach from the east instead – the eastern route uses a gentler gradient.
- Driving past the cabin without seeing it: The cabin is accessed via a side road that branches off the main northern track. If you are staying on the main road, you will miss the turn. Look for the wooden fence across the trail on your left or right depending on direction of travel.
- Confusing the cabin with other structures: The specific cabin you want is on the topmost road in the game, just off the Alpine Heights danger sign. If you are near that danger sign and heading up the side path, you are in the right place.
- Low-clearance cars bottoming out: A sports car or hypercar will struggle on the snow and loose terrain approaching the cabin. Use an off-road capable vehicle or at minimum an AWD car for this challenge.
Final Tips for the Sotoyama Treasure Hunt
- Use the Festival Playlist menu to see the treasure hunt’s general location on the map before setting off.
- Navigate using the Off Piste Wristband event or the Alpine Heights danger sign as your landmarks – both are close to the chest.
- Bring an AWD car or fit snow tyres before heading into the mountains.
- If the western climb stalls you, go around and approach from the east.
- Smash through the wooden fence barrier on the path – it is not a wall, just breakable scenery.
- Grab the Lancia Stratos treasure car nearby while you are already in Sotoyama.
The Sotoyama treasure hunt is genuinely one of the better seasonal chest locations in FH6 – the snowy mountain drive up to the cabin is beautiful, the route involves some proper off-road driving, and 100,000 Credits plus 3 playlist points for a two-minute trip is hard to argue with. Set your waypoint to Alpine Heights, bring a proper all-wheel-drive car, and you will have it done before the loading screen fades out on your next session.
