    Gut Puncher
    • TL;DR: The Gut Puncher is a COG-made belt-fed grenade launcher that fires armor-piercing explosive rounds with player-controlled detonation.
    • Hold the trigger after firing to delay the blast — release it to detonate the round at the right moment.
    • You can bounce rounds around corners and detonate them behind cover where enemies are hiding.
    • Found in the campaign as early as Act 1, Chapter 4: Back in the Fold.
    • There is also a special variant called Carter’s Signature Gut Puncher, found in Act 2, Chapter 2.
    • The Medic class unlocks it earliest in Horde Siege at Level 9. All other classes need Level 28–30.
    • Best mods: Shaped Charge, Hard Launch, Extended Belt — and Concussive Rounds for Carter’s variant.
    • Rated A-Tier in PvE — strong for cover denial, E-Hole control, and execution setups. B-Tier in PvP.

What Is the Gut Puncher in Gears of War E-Day?

The Gut Puncher is one of the brand new weapons introduced in Gears of War E-Day. It is a COG-manufactured, belt-fed grenade launcher designed to fire armor-piercing explosive rounds. The weapon has a long history — it was originally used by the COG Army during the Pendulum Wars against enemy vehicles, and it was present in Kalona on Emergence Day when the Locust first erupted from underground.

What makes the Gut Puncher unique is its player-controlled detonation. Most explosives in games go off on impact. The Gut Puncher does not work like that. You fire it, and then you decide when it explodes. Hold the trigger after the shot and the round keeps traveling. Release it at the right moment and the blast goes off exactly where you want — even if that is around a corner or behind a wall of cover.

This makes it a weapon of skill and timing. Players who fire it like a regular impact launcher will get limited results. Players who learn the hold-and-release rhythm will use it to flush enemies out of positions that would be impossible to hit with any other weapon in the game.

To see how it fits alongside every weapon, read our Gears of War E-Day all weapons list.

Gut Puncher Weapon Type and Stats Overview

    • Weapon Type: Grenade Launcher
    • Manufacturer: Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG)
    • Feed System: Belt-fed
    • Ammo Type: Armor-piercing explosive rounds
    • Detonation: Player-controlled — hold trigger to delay, release to detonate
    • Special Variant: Carter’s Signature Gut Puncher (campaign only)
    • PvE Tier Rating: A-Tier
    • PvP Tier Rating: B-Tier

The Gut Puncher’s strength is not raw damage — it is utility. It gives you the ability to hit enemies that other weapons cannot reach. An enemy behind a pillar, a group packed into a chokepoint, a cluster sitting on an E-Hole — the Gut Puncher solves all of those problems when used correctly. Build dependence is real here, but the ceiling is high.

    How Timed Detonation Actually Works

This is the most important mechanic to understand before anything else. Get this right and the Gut Puncher becomes one of the most powerful situational weapons in E-Day. Get it wrong and you waste shots.

The most common mistake new players make is tapping the trigger and expecting the round to explode on impact. The Gut Puncher does not work like that by default. A quick tap fires a round that detonates normally at impact — but that is not the weapon’s best use case.

The correct approach is hold the trigger after firing. The round travels on its arc while you hold. When you release the trigger, the round detonates at that point. This lets you aim the round at a wall, bounce it around a corner, and release the trigger once the round is behind the enemy. They cannot dodge a blast they cannot see coming.

Think of it as a timed-detonation grenade launcher, not an impact launcher. Aim with the travel arc in mind, not just the initial target. With practice, you can detonate it inside doorways, behind cover edges, and above enemies crouching behind barricades. That timing skill is what separates average Gut Puncher play from great Gut Puncher play.

Where to Find the Gut Puncher in Campaign

The Gut Puncher is available early in the campaign. You first get access to it in Act 1, Chapter 4: Back in the Fold — one of the earliest weapons to become available in the full game. This is a significant advantage over weapons like the Ripper or Longshot that appear much later.

You will also find Gut Punchers on the ground in areas of the campaign where Bilefrogs and large Locust groups appear. These sections are where the weapon earns its keep — firing into a packed enemy cluster and timing the detonation for maximum overlap is one of the best damage moments in the game.

There is also a special campaign-only variant: Carter’s Signature Gut Puncher. This is found in Act 2, Chapter 2: Hold the Line — the same chapter that gives you the Longshot. It features exclusive Concussive Rounds and is tied to Mags Carter, one of Bravo Squad’s core members. It is not available in Horde Siege.

For chapter-by-chapter help, see our Act 1 walkthrough and Act 2 walkthrough. To learn more about Mags Carter and her character, read our Mags Carter character and skins guide.

How to Unlock the Gut Puncher in Horde Siege

The Gut Puncher has the most lopsided unlock levels of any weapon in Horde Siege. The Medic class gets it at Level 9 — by far the earliest. Every other class requires significantly more grinding:

    • Medic: Level 9 (unlocks earliest)
    • Assault: Level 28
    • Marksman: Level 30
    • Breacher: Level 30

If you want the Gut Puncher in Horde Siege without a long grind, play Medic. The Medic class is also one of the best fits for the weapon — the Stim Vaporizer Tactical Gear and execution-sustain mods create a powerful loop with the Gut Puncher. More on that below.

Note that Carter’s Signature Gut Puncher is not available in Horde Siege. Only the standard version can be equipped in your loadout.

Best Mods for the Gut Puncher

The right mods shift the Gut Puncher from a situational grenade launcher into a genuine horde-clearing tool. Here is what to equip:

    Shaped Charge

This mod increases the blast damage and effectiveness of the Gut Puncher’s armor-piercing rounds. The Gut Puncher is built to punch through tougher targets — this mod leans into that. It is the first mod to slot in and works in every situation the weapon is used, from campaign fights to Horde Siege lane defense.

    Hard Launch

Increases the projectile velocity of the round. A faster-traveling round means better control over timed detonation — the window between firing and detonating is shorter and more predictable. This makes it easier to learn the hold-and-release timing accurately. Once you have this mod, the weapon feels significantly more responsive and less clunky.

    Extended Belt

Increases the magazine capacity of the belt feed. The Gut Puncher’s ammo runs out quickly during sustained engagements. More rounds in the belt means you can hold a lane or deny an E-Hole for longer before needing to reload. In Horde Siege specifically, this mod keeps the weapon useful across an entire wave rather than just the opening of one.

Concussive Rounds (Carter’s Signature Gut Puncher only)

This mod is exclusive to Carter’s Signature variant and converts the weapon from pure explosive damage into a close-range stagger and execution-setup tool. Rounds stagger enemies on hit, setting them up for executions rather than killing outright. This synergises beautifully with execution-reward armor mods on the Breacher class — stagger an enemy with the Gut Puncher, execute them, and trigger the health or cooldown recovery that follows. It completely changes how the weapon plays when equipped.

How to Use the Gut Puncher Effectively

    Default to Manual Detonation

Always hold the trigger after firing as your default habit. Direct-impact shots work, but they waste the weapon’s biggest advantage. Manual detonation lets you place the blast beyond cover, inside a doorway, or behind a wall. Once you make this your automatic behavior, the Gut Puncher stops feeling like a clunky grenade launcher and starts feeling like a precision denial tool.

Read the Travel Arc Before Firing

The Gut Puncher’s rounds arc through the air — they do not travel in a flat line. Learn to read the arc so you can predict where to aim the bounce. A round aimed at the base of a wall will bounce upward. A round aimed at a corner will redirect around it. The detonation point is not the wall — it is wherever the round ends up when you release the trigger. Think about the full path, not just the first impact point.

Use It for E-Hole Denial in Horde Siege

This is where the Gut Puncher does its best work in Horde Siege. Place a round at the mouth of an E-Hole — the entrance tunnel the Locust emerge from — and hold the detonation until the next wave starts to pour out. A well-timed blast at an E-Hole mouth can stall an entire push before it reaches your squad. Save the Gut Puncher specifically for these moments rather than burning rounds on spread-out enemies your teammates can handle with rifles.

Use It to Flush Enemies From Cover

Standard weapons can only hit enemies who expose themselves. The Gut Puncher ignores that. An enemy ducked behind a barricade is a free target — bounce a round off the wall above them, hold the trigger until the round clears the cover edge, and release. They take the full blast from a direction they cannot defend against. This is the weapon’s defining use case and the reason it earns A-Tier in PvE.

Pair It With Execution-Reward Armor Mods

The Gut Puncher’s value multiplies when combined with armor mods that reward executions. Stagger an enemy with Concussive Rounds or soften them with an explosive, then finish them with a melee execution. The Blood Mag armor mod grants a full Perfect Reload after an execution. The Proximity Regen mod restores health from close-range kills. The Hemostatic Valve mod on the Adrenaline Injector reduces the Breacher’s cooldown when executions are performed. Chain these together and the Gut Puncher becomes the engine of a full sustain loop.

Gut Puncher in Horde Siege – Medic Class Build

The Medic class is the natural home for the Gut Puncher in Horde Siege. It unlocks at Level 9 — far earlier than any other class — and the Medic’s toolkit creates powerful synergies with the weapon. The recommended mid-game Medic build with the Gut Puncher:

    • Primary: Prototype Lancer — Incendiary Ammo, Precision Rifling, Cover Brace, Chainsaw Autoloader
    • Secondary: Gut Puncher — Shaped Charge, Hard Launch, Extended Belt
    • Sidearm: Snub — Concussion Ammo, Forged Barrel, Aim Stabilizer, Holo Sight
    • Equipment: Smoke Grenade + Frag Grenade

In this build, the Prototype Lancer handles general mid-range fire while the Gut Puncher takes care of lane denial and E-Hole control. The Incendiary Ammo on the Lancer keeps enemies burning, and the Gut Puncher finishes off anything that makes it through. This combination clears Bilefrog groups and stalls Locust pushes very effectively.

The Medic’s Stim Vaporizer Tactical Gear with the Reflex Field mod also plays into this — active reloads within the Stim’s field grant Perfect Reloads, which keeps both weapons firing at peak damage for extended periods.

For more on Tactical Gear and how to build around it, read our Gears of War E-Day all tactical gear list.

Gut Puncher in PvP – Versus Mode Tips

In Versus, the Gut Puncher is B-Tier. Its execution-focused synergies are less reliable against human opponents who actively react and counter the setup. However, it still has genuine uses on objective-based maps.

The key in PvP is objective denial. A timed Gut Puncher round placed at a bomb site or a contested capture zone forces enemies out of position even when they are playing safely behind cover. You do not need to hit them directly — the threat of the detonation is enough to push them off the objective.

Avoid using the Gut Puncher in straight aim-and-fire engagements in Versus. Against human opponents who are moving and reacting, the arc and timing of the Gut Puncher make it harder to use than a rifle. Save it for moments where its unique mechanics — cover bypass and area denial — give it a genuine edge over direct-fire weapons.

Carter’s Signature Gut Puncher – What Is Different?

Carter’s Signature Gut Puncher is a campaign-only variant found in Act 2, Chapter 2: Hold the Line. It belongs to Mags Carter — a Pendulum Wars veteran and key member of Bravo Squad. Here is what sets it apart from the standard version:

    • It carries the exclusive Concussive Rounds mod, which stagger enemies on hit instead of just dealing explosive damage.
    • Staggered enemies are set up for close-range executions, enabling the full execution-reward armor mod cycle.
    • It functions identically in terms of timed detonation mechanics — the hold-and-release timing works exactly the same way.
    • It is campaign only and cannot be used in Horde Siege.

If you are running a campaign build that rewards executions — particularly on the Breacher class with the Adrenaline Injector and execution-recovery armor mods — Carter’s Signature Gut Puncher is one of the most effective tools available. Read more about Mags Carter in our Mags Carter character and skins guide.

How the Gut Puncher Fits Into the Full Weapon Roster

The Gut Puncher fills a role no other primary weapon in E-Day covers. It is the only weapon that can reliably hit enemies who are completely protected by cover. Every other weapon needs the enemy to expose themselves. The Gut Puncher does not.

It works best as a secondary next to a reliable primary for direct engagements. Pair it with:

    • A Prototype Lancer or Lancer MK1 for flexible mid-range fire while the Gut Puncher handles cover and choke denial. Guides: Prototype Lancer guide | Lancer MK1 guide
    • The Ripper for close-range suppression after the Gut Puncher flushes enemies out. See our Ripper weapon guide.
    • The Gnasher to clean up staggered enemies at close range after a Concussive Rounds hit. See our Gnasher weapon guide.

Frequently Asked Questions – Gut Puncher in Gears of War E-Day

What type of weapon is the Gut Puncher in Gears of War E-Day?

The Gut Puncher is a belt-fed Grenade Launcher. It fires armor-piercing explosive rounds with player-controlled detonation — you decide when the round explodes by holding and releasing the fire trigger.

How does the timed detonation mechanic work?

Fire the Gut Puncher and hold the trigger after the shot. The round keeps traveling while you hold. Release the trigger to detonate it at that moment. This lets you bounce rounds around corners and detonate them behind cover where enemies cannot see the blast coming.

Where do you find the Gut Puncher in the campaign?

The standard Gut Puncher first appears in Act 1, Chapter 4: Back in the Fold. Carter’s Signature Gut Puncher is found in Act 2, Chapter 2: Hold the Line. You can also find the standard version on the ground in areas where Bilefrogs and large Locust groups appear throughout the campaign.

What is Carter’s Signature Gut Puncher?

It is a campaign-only variant of the Gut Puncher belonging to Mags Carter. It comes with the exclusive Concussive Rounds mod, which staggers enemies on hit instead of just dealing damage — setting them up for close-range executions. It is not available in Horde Siege.

What class should I play to unlock the Gut Puncher in Horde Siege?

Play Medic. The Gut Puncher unlocks at Medic Level 9, far earlier than Assault (Level 28), Marksman (Level 30), or Breacher (Level 30). The Medic is also the best class for the weapon in Horde Siege.

What are the best mods for the Gut Puncher?

The best mods are Shaped Charge (blast damage), Hard Launch (faster projectile speed for better timing control), and Extended Belt (more rounds per reload). For Carter’s Signature variant, Concussive Rounds transforms it into an execution-setup tool that powers the full execution-reward armor mod cycle.

Is the Gut Puncher good in PvP?

It is B-Tier in Versus. It is useful for objective denial and forcing enemies off contested positions, but its execution-based PvE synergies are harder to land against mobile human opponents. It rewards situational use rather than general engagement in PvP.

What is the Gut Puncher best used for in Horde Siege?

Its best use is E-Hole denial and lane control. Placing a timed round at the mouth of an E-Hole as a wave begins can stall the entire push before it reaches your squad. It is also excellent for flushing enemies out of protected cover positions that rifles cannot reach.
