- The Gnasher is the COG’s standard-issue shotgun and the most dominant close-range weapon in Gears of War E-Day.
- It uses a new round-by-round reload system — you can load one or two shells mid-fight instead of waiting for a full reload.
- To balance this, the shell capacity drops from 8 to 6 compared to previous Gears games.
- You can fire it while sliding — slide toward an enemy and pull the trigger at the same time.
- It is a starting weapon for Assault, Breacher, and Medic. Marksman unlocks it at Level 6.
- The best mods are Full Metal Jacket, Skeleton Frame, Slick Breech, and Bayonet — or Full Auto for a completely different close-range style.
- It ranks S-Tier in both PvE and PvP — no other weapon in the game controls close quarters as well.
What Is the Gnasher in Gears of War E-Day
The Gnasher is the signature shotgun of Gears of War. It has been in every main entry in the series, and in E-Day it is back and better than it has ever felt. This is the weapon you reach for when a Locust Drone gets too close to deal with using a rifle. It fires 12-gauge buckshot in a spreading cone. At very close range, that cone concentrates into a single devastating hit. A little further back and the spread starts to widen. Step back too far and you are wasting shells.
In Gears of War E-Day, The Coalition has reworked how the Gnasher reloads. Rather than waiting for a full magazine reload, you now load shells one at a time — and you can interrupt that reload at any point to fire with whatever you have loaded. This gives the Gnasher a rhythm that older Gears players will need to adjust to, and it rewards players who are aggressive and comfortable reloading on the fly. The trade-off is that the shell capacity drops from 8 to 6. You get flexibility for the price of two shells.

Gnasher Lore and History
The Gnasher Shotgun has been the backbone of close-quarters combat for the COG throughout the entire Gears of War franchise. It is a short-barrelled, lever-action military shotgun designed for exactly one thing: ending fights at point-blank range. COG Gears have relied on it from the beginning of the Locust War. Even Locust Grenadier troops — the Locust’s own shock-troopers designed for breaching fortified positions — carried the Gnasher. That says everything about how effective it is. Even the enemy uses it.
At Emergence Day, the Gnasher was already in service. Gears on the front line during the early days of the Locust invasion were carrying it. When Locust came out of the ground in close quarters — in streets, in buildings, in corridors — the Gnasher was the answer. The Lancer handled mid-range. The Gnasher handled everything that got through. It has been described as placing second only to the Lancer on Gears of War’s own internal weapon rankings.
In E-Day, the weapon has been reworked from scratch alongside every other gun in the game. The Coalition kept its identity — a brutal close-range weapon with one-shot potential — but added the new round-by-round reload system that changes how you manage it in the middle of a fight. E-Day also adds the ability to fire the Gnasher while sliding, which opens up aggressive push-and-shoot movement that was not possible in older games.
You can see how Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago use the Gnasher throughout the campaign in our character guides, and in our Biggest Changes From the Prequel article for a full breakdown of what is new in E-Day.
Gnasher Stats and Strengths
The Gnasher is built entirely around close-range dominance. Here is what it does:
- Devastating close-range damage — at point-blank range it can take down standard Locust enemies in a single shot.
- 6-shell capacity — reduced from 8 in previous games to account for the new round-by-round reload flexibility.
- Round-by-round active reload — load one shell at a time and interrupt the reload whenever you need to fire. You are never fully defenceless while reloading.
- Slide-and-shoot — you can fire the Gnasher mid-slide, letting you close the distance aggressively and fire at the same time.
- High melee strength — the Gnasher’s stock melee is one of the strongest in the game. Close-range kills open up execution animations that do not apply to rifle weapons.
- Works while moving aggressively — unlike rifles that perform better from cover, the Gnasher fits a push-forward playstyle perfectly.
The Gnasher ranks S-Tier in both PvE and PvP. It is the standout close-range choice in Versus and one of the most important weapons in Horde Siege when waves push into your position. For the Breacher class in particular, the Gnasher is the emergency answer when the enemy gets in your face. No other weapon in E-Day controls close quarters as reliably.
How to Get the Gnasher
In the campaign, the Gnasher is available from the very beginning of the game. It is already in the COG arsenal on Emergence Day. You can pick it up from Supply Cache points — the green equipment cases found throughout each chapter — where you can swap weapons, equip mods, and refill ammo. It also appears as a pickup in several campaign encounters.
In Horde Siege multiplayer, the Gnasher is a starting weapon for Assault, Breacher, and Medic. The Marksman class unlocks it at Level 6. For all starting classes, it is in your default loadout immediately — you do not need to earn it before using it.
For full chapter-by-chapter details, see our Act 1 Walkthrough and Act 2 Walkthrough.
Best Weapon Mods for the Gnasher
The Gnasher has up to four mod slots. In the campaign, extra slots unlock from Act 2 onwards through Hard Cases and secondary objectives. In Horde Siege, all four slots open as you level your class. Mods follow the weapon — build the Gnasher once and those mods are active regardless of which class picks it up.
Standard Aggressive Build (Recommended for Most Players)
- Full Metal Jacket — Converts Perfect Reloads into Perfect Ammo with increased damage. The best mod in the game and always the first slot to fill. On the Gnasher, a Perfect Reload while loading shells mid-fight means your next shot hits harder — critical for finishing enemies before they recover.
- Skeleton Frame — Improves aim speed, weapon swap speed, and movement speed while aiming. On the Gnasher this is essential. It makes the weapon feel faster and more responsive, which is exactly what you need when fighting up close. The Gnasher without mods can feel sluggish — Skeleton Frame fixes that.
- Slick Breech — Greatly increases reload speed. Faster per-shell loading means you spend less time vulnerable between shots. Works perfectly with the round-by-round reload system.
- Bayonet — Adds a dedicated bayonet melee option. Replaces the standard melee with a faster stab attack. When enemies are at zero distance and you have no shells loaded, the Bayonet gives you an instant answer without needing to wait on a reload.
Full Auto Build (Alternative for Aggressive Breacher Play)
- Full Metal Jacket — Always first.
- Full Auto — Switches the Gnasher from lever-action pump to fully automatic fire with a greatly increased fire rate. This completely changes how the weapon feels. Instead of deliberate single shots, you hold the trigger and it fires continuously at close range. This is the highest-risk, highest-reward Gnasher build — devastating if you are in the right range, empty and defenceless if you are not.
- Skeleton Frame — Even more important in Full Auto mode because you are moving aggressively and need fast aim speed.
- Slick Breech — Faster reloads between Full Auto bursts keep you in the fight.
You can also run the Auto-Pouch mod in place of Slick Breech. Auto-Pouch automatically reloads the Gnasher after you stow it for a short time. This means swapping to your primary rifle, fighting with that for a moment, then swapping back to a ready Gnasher — a strong choice if you frequently switch between weapons in the same encounter.

Best Class Builds With the Gnasher
The Gnasher fits differently depending on the class. Here is how to use it in the two classes where it matters most.
Breacher Class — Primary Gnasher Build
- Tactical Gear: Adrenaline Injector
- Tactical Gear Mod: Burst Capacitor — reduces cooldown so you can activate the injector more often
- Armor Mod 1: Proximity Reload — close-range kills automatically trigger a Perfect Reload
- Armor Mod 2: Proximity Regen — close-range kills restore health
- Primary: Incinerator (unlocks at Level 9) or Lancer Mk1
- Secondary: Gnasher — Full Metal Jacket, Full Auto, Skeleton Frame, Slick Breech
- Sidearm: Snub — Full Metal Jacket, Extended Magazine, Aim Stabilizer, Forged Barrel
- Equipment: Frag Grenades or Incendiary Grenade
On Breacher, the Gnasher is your emergency weapon when enemies get inside your primary’s range. The Proximity Reload armor mod means close-range kills trigger automatic Perfect Reloads — this feeds directly into Full Metal Jacket for bonus damage on the next shells you load. The loop is fast: kill at close range, auto-reload, stronger next shot. The Adrenaline Injector keeps you alive while you fight inside that dangerous close-range zone.
Marksman Class — Secondary Gnasher Build
- Primary: Longshot — long-range precision
- Secondary: Gnasher — Full Metal Jacket, Slick Breech, Skeleton Frame, Bayonet
On Marksman, the Gnasher exists for one reason: when enemies breach your position and the Longshot is useless at zero range. The Longshot cannot fight at close quarters. The Gnasher can. Skeleton Frame and Slick Breech make it fast to bring up and fast to reload, so you can handle the threat and get back to the Longshot. This is the cleanest two-weapon pairing in the game — one weapon for far away, one weapon for right here.
See full class details in our All Tactical Gear List.
How to Use the Gnasher Effectively
The Gnasher is a simple weapon with a high skill ceiling. Here are the core tips:
- Get close before you fire. The Gnasher’s damage falls off fast with distance. If you are firing at medium range and missing clean hits, you are wasting shells. Close the gap first — use cover, slide, sprint — then fire when you are inside optimal range.
- Use the slide-and-shoot. Sprint into a slide and fire at the end of it. This lets you close distance fast and land a shot before the enemy has time to react. It is one of the most effective aggressive moves in E-Day’s new movement system. A well-timed slide into a Gnasher shot at close range is the signature play of this weapon.
- Reload one or two shells at a time mid-fight. Do not wait for the full reload animation. Load one shell, interrupt, fire, load again. Keep yourself from running empty rather than waiting until you are completely out. Two shells loaded is enough to take a shot and reassess.
- Do not panic reload. The round-by-round system rewards calm, deliberate reloading under pressure. If you panic and spam the reload button, you disrupt the rhythm and leave yourself defenceless longer. Load what you need, fire, then load more.
- Use the Bayonet when shells run out. If you are caught empty at point-blank range, do not swap weapons — stab. The Bayonet mod gives you a fast melee that can buy the split-second you need to load a shell and fire.
- In Full Auto mode, stay at the right range. The Full Auto mod turns the Gnasher into a continuous fire weapon. It is most effective at extremely close range where every pellet lands. If you are using Full Auto at medium range, the spread drops your damage dramatically. Use it only when you have committed to a push and you are already inside the enemy’s guard.
- Pair it with a rifle. The Gnasher does not fight at mid or long range. Always have a Lancer, Hammerburst, or Prototype Lancer in your second slot to handle enemies before they get close. See our Hammerburst Weapon Guide and Lancer Mk1 Weapon Guide for the best pairing options.
For more on handling tough enemies that close the gap fast, see our How to Kill Jammer and Seeder Enemies guide.
Gnasher in Campaign vs. Horde Siege vs. Versus
In the campaign, the Gnasher handles every close-quarters encounter in the game. When Locust Drones rush you in tight spaces — corridors, rooms, wrecked buildings — this is the weapon that keeps you alive. In the campaign’s early sections, before you have strong rifle mods, the Gnasher is the reliable answer to enemies that get inside your Lancer’s comfortable range. Check our Act 1 Collectibles and All Secondary Objective Locations to earn mods early and build it out fast.
In Horde Siege, the Gnasher is the best close-range option in the mode. In later waves when Locust push hard into your position, a fully modded Gnasher stops the flood before it reaches your team. It is especially critical on the Breacher class where the entire playstyle revolves around fighting up close. Even for Medic and Assault, it covers the range band that rifles cannot.
In Versus (PvP), the Gnasher is the dominant weapon. It has always been the gun that PvP Gears fights are built around. No weapon mods are active in Versus — raw stats apply. Slide-and-shoot, corner fights, and close-range aggression are the pillars of PvP in E-Day. Players who master the Gnasher control every close encounter. It is the S-Tier PvP weapon without question.
Gnasher vs. Incinerator — Which Close-Range Weapon Is Better
Both the Gnasher and the Incinerator are close-range weapons, but they play very differently:
- The Gnasher is the standard close-range weapon — fast to use, accurate at point-blank, and available to every class. It is the right pick for players who want a reliable emergency option at all times.
- The Incinerator is a Locust-made fire shotgun that deals damage over an area. It excels at wave-clearing in Horde Siege and is the Breacher’s best primary weapon once unlocked at Level 9. It takes longer to get but hits groups harder. The Gnasher is better against single targets; the Incinerator is better against clusters of enemies.
For most players and most situations, the Gnasher is the stronger choice because it is always available, always reliable, and does not require level grinding to access. See the full list of comparisons in our All Weapons List.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Gnasher in Gears of War E-Day?
The Gnasher is the COG’s standard-issue lever-action shotgun. It fires 12-gauge buckshot in a cone pattern and is the most effective close-range weapon in the game. It has appeared in every Gears of War entry and is a starting weapon for Assault, Breacher, and Medic in Horde Siege.
Is the Gnasher the best weapon in Gears of War E-Day?
It is the best close-range weapon in the game and ranks S-Tier in both PvE and PvP. No other weapon controls close-quarters combat as effectively. It is not the best at mid or long range — for those, pair it with a rifle like the Prototype Lancer or Hammerburst.
How does the round-by-round reload work on the Gnasher?
Instead of waiting for a full magazine reload, the Gnasher loads one shell at a time. You can interrupt the reload at any point by pressing fire or reload and use whatever shells you have loaded. This means you can load one shell mid-fight and immediately fire rather than waiting until all six are loaded. To balance this, the total capacity is 6 shells instead of the 8 from older Gears games.
Can you fire the Gnasher while sliding in E-Day?
Yes. E-Day’s new movement system lets you fire the Gnasher during a slide. Sprint into a slide and pull the trigger at the same time to close the gap on an enemy and fire before they can react. It is one of the most effective aggressive moves with the weapon.
What are the best mods for the Gnasher?
For the standard build: Full Metal Jacket, Skeleton Frame, Slick Breech, and Bayonet. Full Metal Jacket is always first. Skeleton Frame fixes the Gnasher’s sluggish feel and makes it faster to bring up and aim. Slick Breech speeds up per-shell loading. Bayonet gives you a melee option when you are out of shells. For an aggressive Full Auto build, swap Bayonet for the Full Auto mod.
Which class uses the Gnasher best in Horde Siege?
The Breacher class gets the most out of the Gnasher because the entire class is built around close-range aggressive play. The Proximity Reload armor mod triggers automatic Perfect Reloads on close-range kills, which feeds directly into Full Metal Jacket’s bonus damage. The Marksman uses it as a critical secondary for when enemies breach their position.
What is the Full Auto mod on the Gnasher?
The Full Auto mod switches the Gnasher from lever-action pump-fire to fully automatic fire with a greatly increased fire rate. Instead of individual shots, you hold the trigger and it fires continuously. It is the highest-damage-per-second option at point-blank range but runs through shells extremely fast. Best used for Breacher players who commit to close-range pushes.
How does the Gnasher compare to the Incinerator?
The Gnasher is faster, available from the start, and better for single-target close-range fights. The Incinerator is a Locust-made fire shotgun that deals area-of-effect flame damage and is better for clearing groups in Horde Siege. The Gnasher is more versatile and reliable; the Incinerator hits harder against clusters but unlocks later at Breacher Level 9.
