Who Is Marcus Fenix in Gears of War E-Day?
Marcus Fenix is the main character of Gears of War E-Day and the perspective through which the whole story unfolds. This is a younger version of Marcus — fresh off the Pendulum Wars, not yet the grizzled veteran players know from the original Gears trilogy.
In E-Day, Marcus is an experienced soldier with real battle scars. He earned the Embry Star — the COG’s highest military honour — during the Battle of Aspho Fields. But with the Pendulum Wars now over, he is trying to figure out who he is when there is no war to fight.
That peace does not last long. When the Locust Horde erupts from underground on Emergence Day, Marcus and his best friend Dominic Santiago are pulled straight back into combat in the city of Kalona. Together with Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes, they form Bravo Squad.
One of the most important emotional threads in Marcus’s story here is guilt. He carries grief over the death of Carlos Santiago, Dom’s older brother and Marcus’s closest friend. That weight follows him through the entire campaign.

Marcus Fenix Voice Actor in Gears of War E-Day
John DiMaggio reprises his role as Marcus Fenix in E-Day. He has voiced the character in every mainline Gears of War game dating back to the original 2006 release. The Coalition made subtle adjustments to reflect a slightly younger Marcus, but the voice remains instantly recognizable.
Marcus Fenix’s Signature Weapon in E-Day
In this prequel, Marcus uses the Prototype Lancer — the early version of the weapon that would eventually become the iconic chainsaw-bayonet Lancer the franchise is famous for. It is a key part of the E-Day story because it shows the weapon in its earliest form, before Gears engineering perfected it.

All Marcus Fenix Skins in Gears of War E-Day
There are five Marcus Fenix skins available in the game at launch. Each one has a different look and a different unlock method. Here is the full list.
Bravo Squad Marcus

How to unlock: Available by default. You start the game with this skin.
This is Marcus in his Bravo Squad combat gear — the look he wears throughout the campaign. Clean, functional, and classic. It is the skin most players will recognise from the trailers and is perfectly fine for both campaign and multiplayer use.
Emergence Marcus

How to unlock: Re-Up for the first time (reach Player Level 100 and prestige).
This is the first earnable Marcus skin and a natural target for players who enjoy the multiplayer. Once you hit level 100 in Versus or Horde Siege, you can Re-Up — which resets your level back to 1 but earns you prestige rewards. Emergence Marcus is one of those rewards. It has a distinct look that separates you from players who have not put in the time.
There is also an Xbox achievement tied to this: Field Service (15G) is awarded when you reach level 100 and Re-Up for the first time. See all the achievement unlocks in our Gears of War E-Day All Achievements List.
Wings of Valor Marcus

How to unlock: Reach the highest Re-Up level (complete all four Re-Ups and reach level 100 for the final time).
This is the hardest Marcus skin to get in the entire game. E-Day has a total of four Re-Ups, which means you need to reach level 100 a total of five times across the full progression ladder. That is 500 levels of multiplayer progress.
When you finish the final Re-Up, you unlock a set of wings — a nod to an earlier game in the series — displayed next to your gamertag or Steam name in multiplayer lobbies. The Wings of Valor Marcus skin reflects that same milestone and is a real status symbol in the community. There is a separate Xbox achievement for this too: Got Your Wings (25G).

Death’s Rendezvous Marcus

How to unlock: Included with the Premium Edition upgrade (also available from the Premium Digital Edition).
This is a Legendary-tier Marcus skin and one of the standout cosmetics in the game. It comes as part of the Emergence Customization Pack, which also includes the Bloodied Hunter Tai Kaliso Epic skin, two Legendary poses, a Legendary weapon skin set, and a Rare weapon skin set.
If you bought the standard edition of the game, you can still get this skin by purchasing the Premium Edition upgrade separately. It is not available through gameplay, challenges, or the store — only through the premium edition bundle.
Ceremonial Marcus

How to unlock: Purchase from the in-game store for 9,000 Coins or 500 Iron.
Ceremonial Marcus is the only skin on this list that sits squarely in the in-game store. Coins are the earnable currency you accumulate by playing, while Iron is the premium currency that can be purchased with real money. At 9,000 Coins it takes a fair amount of play time, but it is entirely achievable without spending real money.

How to Equip Marcus Fenix Skins in Gears of War E-Day
Equipping a Marcus skin is simple. Here is how to do it:
- Go to the Barracks menu.
- Navigate to Versus or Horde Siege.
- Select Marcus Fenix from the character list.
- Choose the skin you want to equip.
Note that skins you equip in Versus are separate from campaign appearance. The campaign always shows Marcus in his default Bravo Squad gear.
What Is the Re-Up System in Gears of War E-Day?
Re-Up is the game’s prestige system. You earn XP by playing Versus matches and Horde Siege. Once your Player Level hits 100, you get the option to Re-Up — resetting your level back to 1 in exchange for a prestige tier and exclusive rewards.
E-Day has four Re-Ups in total, giving you 500 levels of progression overall. The rewards at each milestone include weapon skins, character skins, and eventually the Wings of Valor Marcus skin at the very end.
If you stop at level 100 and do not Re-Up, you keep playing but stop earning progress toward prestige rewards. You need to Re-Up to keep moving forward.
