Halo Campaign Evolved 3rd person mode is something no mainline Halo game has ever offered before — a full over-the-shoulder camera for the entire campaign. It is not on by default. To unlock it, you need to find one specific skull called the Perspective Skull, which is hidden in the very first mission. This guide tells you exactly where to find it, how to turn it on, what it actually does in-game, and a few things worth knowing before you commit to a full third-person playthrough.
TL;DR — Quick Summary
- Third person is enabled by the Perspective Skull — a brand new skull added in Campaign Evolved.
- It is found in The Pillar of Autumn, the very first mission — you can grab it in under 5 minutes.
- Location: after the Captain Keyes cutscene at Rally Point Bravo, drop down below the two pilots near the cockpit window. The skull is on the floor to the left of the ladder.
- To activate: start a mission or rally point, open the Skulls menu, toggle Perspective on, then launch.
- You cannot toggle between first and third person mid-mission — it is all-or-nothing per run.
- Scoped weapons automatically switch back to first person when you zoom in.
- Works in both solo and co-op.
Is Third Person New to Halo?
Yes — for on-foot gameplay, this is the first time in the series. Outside some limited instances of zooming out for a third-person view, such as when using a Warthog or vehicle, during assassinations, and similar situations, Halo Campaign Evolved is the first time players can select third person as a permanent fixture during any given mission.
From the very beginning, vehicles have been piloted in third-person to provide a better view of the surrounding chaos and to avoid the motion sickness that a first-person cockpit view might induce. Halo 3 also briefly went third person when players picked up heavy turrets. Campaign Evolved simply takes that logic and applies it to the entire on-foot experience.
It is one of 16 brand new skulls added to the game alongside 26 returning fan-favourite skulls. The Perspective Skull is a cosmetic and experiential modifier — it does not make the game easier or harder. It just changes how you see the world.
What Is the Perspective Skull?
The Perspective Skull is a unique skull that switches the camera to a third-person over-the-shoulder perspective instead of the classic first-person mode, which is why it is called Perspective. Once activated, Master Chief’s full armour is visible on screen throughout the entire mission. The camera sits close over the shoulder — not a wide pull-back — so indoors sections remain comfortable and readable.
This is a great way to actually see the armor skins you have unlocked. Since Halo has always been first person, cosmetics on Master Chief have historically been visible only to other players in co-op. With the Perspective Skull, you can admire your own loadout the whole time. For a look at what armor is available, check our Halo Campaign Evolved armor skins guide.
Where to Find the Perspective Skull — Step by Step
The Perspective Skull is in The Pillar of Autumn, the first main mission of Halo Campaign Evolved. It takes about 5 minutes from the start of the mission to reach the skull — making this one of the fastest unlocks in the game.

Starting Fresh — From Mission Start
- Start The Pillar of Autumn from the beginning on any difficulty.
- Play through the opening until you reach the bridge of the ship and trigger the cutscene with Captain Keyes and Cortana.
- After the cutscene ends, do not leave the bridge area. Turn around and walk back toward the large front window of the bridge.
- You will see two crew members sitting at cockpit controls in front of the glass canopy.
- Drop down into the lower compartment below them. There is a ladder between the two pilot seats you can use to get back up.
- The Perspective Skull is found to the left of the ladder when you drop down. Pick it up. It is added to your skull collection immediately.
Already Past the First Mission? Use Rally Point Bravo
If you have already completed the first mission, simply load Rally Point Bravo, which drops you in post-cutscene. You will be on the bridge right after the Captain Keyes meeting. From there, walk to the cockpit window, drop down below the pilots, and the skull is waiting on the floor to the left of the ladder. You do not need to replay the whole mission.
Exact Location Summary
- Mission: The Pillar of Autumn
- Checkpoint: Rally Point Bravo (after Captain Keyes cutscene)
- Area: Bridge — cockpit section with the large front window
- How to reach it: Drop into the lower compartment below the two pilots at the cockpit controls
- Skull position: On the floor, to the left of the ladder
How to Activate Third Person — Enabling the Perspective Skull
Finding the skull does not automatically put you in third person. You need to enable it before starting a mission. Once you have found the Perspective Skull, you need to apply it before booting up any missions and you will then be automatically in third person.
Here is how to do it:
- From the main menu, choose to start a campaign mission or load a rally point.
- Before launching, open the Skulls menu on the mission select or rally point screen.
- Find the Perspective Skull in the list and toggle it on.
- Launch the mission. The camera will immediately be in third person when the mission starts.
That is all there is to it. The skull stays toggled on for future missions until you turn it off. If you want to switch back to first person for a different run, just go to the Skulls menu and toggle Perspective off before launching.
Can You Toggle Between First and Third Person Mid-Mission?
No. You cannot toggle between first and third person mid-mission — it is an on-or-off situation by using the skull, just like the other skulls available to mix up your experience. The camera is set when you launch the mission. If you want to change perspective, you need to exit to the menu, change the skull setting, and relaunch from a checkpoint or rally point.
Plan your runs ahead of time. If you want a third-person playthrough, enable Perspective at the start and keep it on the whole way through. If you just want to try it for one mission, toggle it off again before your next session.
What Third Person Actually Looks and Plays Like
The third-person perspective the game gives you is relatively close to the shoulder, so it is not too bad when indoors. It is not a distant pull-back like some action games. Master Chief stays close to the camera, which keeps the view readable even in tight corridors like The Library.
Here is what changes and what stays the same:
What Changes in Third Person
- You can see Master Chief’s full armor at all times — body, legs, back, the whole Spartan
- The camera sits over the right shoulder for a standard over-the-shoulder view
- Animations for movement, combat, and interactions are fully visible from outside the helmet
- Vehicles still switch to their own third-person view as normal
What Stays the Same in Third Person
- All gameplay mechanics are identical — shooting, grenades, melee, sprinting
- Using a scoped weapon automatically switches the view back to first-person while aiming — this makes it easy to line up accurate shots with weapons like the Magnum or sniper rifle. The camera returns to third person when you stop aiming
- Difficulty is unchanged — enemies behave the same, damage is the same
- Co-op works normally in third person
Third Person for Motion Sickness
First-person games cause motion sickness for some players. If you have trouble with first person due to motion sickness, you do not need to play very far at all to switch over to third person — it takes about 5 minutes from the start of the mission to reach the skull. That means anyone who struggles with the standard FPS view can grab the Perspective Skull in the opening minutes and play the entire campaign in third person from that point forward.
A few additional settings that help with first-person motion sickness in general — even in third person mode:
- Turn off motion blur — this is one of the most common triggers for nausea in modern games
- Increase FOV — a wider field of view gives more visual context and reduces the tunnel-vision effect
- Lock to 60fps — a steady frame rate is much easier on the eyes than a fluctuating one
- Turn off depth of field — the bokeh blurring on non-focus areas can contribute to discomfort
The Perspective Skull combined with these settings gives players who struggle with first-person a real, comfortable path through the full campaign.

Can You Use Third Person with Other Skulls?
Yes. The Perspective Skull stacks with any other skull modifier. You can run a full third-person Legendary playthrough, or combine Perspective with Grunt Birthday Party for the full chaos experience. There are no compatibility restrictions between Perspective and other skulls.
A few combinations worth trying:
- Perspective + Acrophobia — reduced fall damage and a third-person view makes vertical exploration and platforming feel much more like a traditional action game
- Perspective + Blind — removes the HUD and weapon model from view, which in third person gives a very clean, cinematic look to footage and screenshots
- Perspective + Grunt Birthday Party — watching the confetti headshot effect from a third-person camera is noticeably more satisfying than in first person
- Perspective + Campaign Remix — the randomized enemy encounters and weapon spawns play completely differently when you have the wider situational view that third person provides

Does Third Person Work in Co-Op?
Yes. Third person works the same way in co-op as it does solo. Each player who wants to play in third person needs to have the Perspective Skull enabled before the session starts. It is a per-player skull setting, not a host-only option.
Playing third person in co-op is a good way to actually see both Spartans on screen during combat. With the wider camera view, you get much better awareness of where your co-op partner is and what enemies are targeting them. For the full co-op breakdown, see our Halo Campaign Evolved co-op players guide.
Is Third Person Worth Using for a Full Playthrough?
It depends on what you want from the game. Here is an honest take:
- Worth it if: You want to actually see Master Chief’s armor, you have motion sickness with first person, you want a fresh way to experience a familiar story, or you are filming content and want the Spartan visible on camera
- Stick with first person if: You want the classic Halo feel, you are going for timed runs or LASO, or you prefer the tighter aim control that first person provides for precision shooting
- Try both: The skull can be toggled off between missions, so you are not locked into one view for the entire campaign
The close-over-the-shoulder camera and the automatic first-person zoom on scoped weapons means the gameplay loop does not feel radically different. It is a comfortable way to experience the remake rather than a gimmick run.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Perspective Skull affect difficulty trophies?
No. The Perspective Skull is not a difficulty modifier. Enabling it does not block any achievements or trophies, including Heroes Never Die, Living Legend, or MYTHIC. You can run a full LASO playthrough in third person if you want. For the full achievement breakdown, see our Halo Campaign Evolved achievement and trophy list.
Can I get the Perspective Skull after finishing the game?
Yes. Load Rally Point Bravo in The Pillar of Autumn at any time. Walk to the cockpit, drop below the pilots, and pick it up. It is never locked off or missable.
Does scoped aiming always go back to first person?
Yes. Every scoped weapon — Magnum, Sniper Rifle, Battle Rifle, and anything else with a zoom function — temporarily shifts to first person while you are aiming. It returns to third person as soon as you release the zoom. Non-scoped weapons stay in third person while firing.
Is third person available in Machinima Mode?
They are separate tools. Machinima Mode gives you a detached freecam. The Perspective Skull changes your active gameplay view to third person. You can run both at the same time — enabling Perspective first puts your Spartan in third person, and then activating Machinima Mode detaches the camera from that third-person view. For the full Machinima Mode guide, see our Halo Campaign Evolved Machinima Mode guide.
Does the skull count toward any collectible trophies?
Yes. The Perspective Skull counts toward skull collection trophies just like any other skull — Cranial (first skull), Making a Necklace (22 skulls), and Headhunter (all 39 skulls) all track it. Picking it up also contributes toward the Clean Sweep trophy for finding all skulls and terminals in The Pillar of Autumn.
