    TL;DR

    • Magdalena is found at the end of the Glutted Mire inside the first Corrupted Gate in Fainweald.
    • She rides a wheelchair-like chariot and attacks with charges, spinning fire, and summoned minions.
    • Her charge attacks are unparryable — dodge them instead.
    • Stay mobile, bait her charges, and punish her recovery windows with a few quick hits.
    • At 50% health she summons Tar Babies. At 30% she releases a dangerous fly swarm.
    • Tiel is the best Shell for this fight. Smert is the recommended spirit summon.
    • Reward: Magdalena’s Memento Tarstone for the Axe and Dagger, plus 26 Ova.

Magdalena the Lady of the Woods is the first major boss most players will face in Mortal Shell 2. She guards the end of the Glutted Mire, the opening Corrupted Gate dungeon in Fainweald. Her attacks are well-telegraphed but hit extremely hard, and several of them cannot be parried at all. This guide covers her exact location, every attack in her moveset, how each phase of the fight changes, and the best setup to take her down clean on your first real attempt.

If you are still gearing up before this fight, our Mortal Shell 2 beginner’s guide has everything you need to get ready. You can also check the full Mortal Shell 2 all boss list to see what comes after Magdalena and plan ahead.

Magdalena the Lady of the Woods Location

Magdalena is located at the end of the Glutted Mire, which sits behind the first Corrupted Gate in the game. To reach her, cleanse the Mushroom Village Gate beacon east of Mushroom Village to remove the corruption blocking the gate entrance. Go through and follow the path into the Sunken Village area.

From the Sunken Village Beacon, turn left and cross the wooden bridge into the village. Destroy the crates blocking the fences to reveal a path, squeeze through, and continue toward the next bridge. Jump down the opening to the left of the altar and enter the tunnel ahead. Walk toward the forest and a cutscene will trigger, starting the boss fight.

The route from the nearest Beacon to the arena is clean. There are no major enemies blocking your path back to her, so repeat attempts are fast.

Before you drop in: Look to the right before entering the tunnel. There is a chest containing the Etching Needles — a key item that unlocks Tarstone upgrades at the Tarforge. Do not skip this. Also check the altar on the way for the Forgotten Crossbow sidearm. Both are free pickups on the approach.

    Recommended Setup Before Fighting Magdalena

Getting your kit right before this fight makes a big difference. Here is what works best.

    Best Shell for Magdalena

Tiel is the top pick for this fight. His high mobility and ability to attack from the shadows give you strong punish windows after her charges and spinning attacks. His speed also helps you avoid the Tar Babies during the mid-phase. If you are still using Harros as your starting Shell, he will work but you will need to play more patiently.

    Best Weapon for Magdalena

Fast weapons perform much better here than slow, heavy ones. Magdalena moves constantly and the punish windows after her attacks are short. The Axe and Dagger is the ideal pick — it is fast, it lets you land hits quickly before she recovers, and it is the weapon that Magdalena’s reward Tarstone is built for. If you already found the Axe and Dagger, bring it here. Two-handed weapons like the Obsidian Hammer are too slow for the openings this fight gives you.

    Best Sidearm for Magdalena

Ranged weapons are very useful in this fight. They let you keep dealing damage while staying outside the range of her more dangerous moves. The Forgotten Crossbow you picked up on the way in works well. Use your sidearm whenever you have a safe moment at distance. Check our best sidearms guide if you want a stronger option equipped ahead of time.

    Item to Equip

Equip the Burnt Effigy as a passive item before entering. It grants +15% burn mitigation, which reduces the damage from her Fire Spin attack throughout the entire fight. That spinning flame move hits hard and you will see it multiple times, so having the mitigation helps.

    Spirit Summon

Spend one Glimpse to summon Smert before the fight. He draws Magdalena’s attention and gives you breathing room to reposition and heal. When Magdalena is locked onto Smert, use that window to fire your sidearm or land melee hits from the side. Try to lure her away from him so he survives as long as possible and keeps applying pressure.

Magdalena the Lady of the Woods — All Attacks

Magdalena has a limited but very punishing moveset. The key thing to know upfront is that several of her most dangerous attacks are unparryable. Do not commit to a parry on her charges. Dodging is the correct response to most of what she does.

    Cart Ram (Charge Attack)

Magdalena accelerates and barrels straight at you across the arena. This is unparryable. The tell is clear — she revs and builds speed before launching forward. When you see this, dodge sideways rather than backwards. After she crashes into the edge of the arena, her back becomes briefly vulnerable. That is your main punish window. Close the distance immediately, land two or three hits, and pull back before she turns around. Stay on the edges of the arena to bait this attack more reliably.

    Fire Spin (Spinning Flamethrower)

Magdalena rotates and creates a ring of flames around her position. This covers a wide area and you cannot fight through it safely. As soon as the spin begins, back away until the animation ends completely. Once the flames stop, move in quickly and punish before she initiates the next attack. The Burnt Effigy passive reduces the damage if you catch a clip of flame during this.

    Flamethrower Blast

A more direct fire attack where she spews a stream of flames in a targeted direction. Watch which way she is facing when she begins the animation. Dodge to the side rather than backwards. After the blast ends there is a brief recovery you can punish.

Blown Babies (Tar Baby Summon) — Phase 2

At around 50% health, Magdalena starts summoning Tar Babies. These small demons rush toward you and explode on contact. They die quickly but there are several of them. Do not run away from Magdalena entirely to deal with them — she is completely open during this phase. Use wide horizontal attacks to clear the Tar Babies while keeping Magdalena as your main target. The Axe and Dagger’s sprinting spin or charged heavy attack handles them well. Keep moving so you do not get cornered against obstacles or trees.

    Fly Swarm — Phase 3

At around 30% health, Magdalena begins belching flies that fill the area immediately around her. If you stay inside the swarm too long, your character gets locked into an animation and she hits you with a powerful follow-up blast. Do not try to fight inside it. Instead, move away and bait her into chasing you to a clean part of the arena. Once she moves away from the swarm, return to your normal strategy of baiting attacks and punishing the recovery. If the swarm reappears, repeat.

How to Beat Magdalena the Lady of the Woods

The core loop of this fight is simple: stay mobile, bait her into committing to an attack, dodge it, punish the recovery, and pull back. Do not try to trade hits with her or stand close while she is setting up an attack.

    Phase 1 — Opening

Stay on the outer edges of the arena. This encourages Magdalena to use her charge. When she revs up and barrels toward you, dodge sideways, let her crash into the wall, and immediately move in to hit her exposed back. Land two or three hits maximum, then retreat. Repeat this rhythm.

When she uses the Fire Spin, back off and give her space. Wait for the full animation to end before approaching. For the flamethrower blast, dodge to the side and punish the recovery. Between these attacks, use your sidearm at range to add damage safely.

Her Break meter fills from your attacks. Land enough consistent hits and you will open her up for a Riposte. This deals massive damage. Mastering the parry system in general will help here — read our Mortal Shell 2 parry guide for a full breakdown.

    Phase 2 — Tar Babies (50% Health)

When Magdalena reaches around half health, she summons Tar Babies. Stay calm. Magdalena is completely exposed during this summoning phase, so keep her as your focus. Use area attacks to sweep up the Tar Babies in your path but do not shift entirely to chasing them around the arena. Keep moving to avoid getting boxed in by explosions. Hit Magdalena whenever you have a clear angle, and continue the bait-and-punish rhythm between the minion waves.

    Phase 3 — Fly Swarm (30% Health)

At low health, the fly swarm appears around Magdalena. Stop attacking into the swarm. Move away from her and wait. She will follow you. Once she has chased you to a part of the arena free of the flies, resume attacking. If the swarm reappears, move again. This is straightforward once you know to move rather than push through it.

Keep your damage consistent, keep your dodges clean, and the fight ends fast. She does not hit particularly hard by boss standards as long as you respect her fire and her charge.

Magdalena the Lady of the Woods Rewards

    Defeating Magdalena drops the following:

    • Magdalena’s Memento — a Tarstone for the Axe and Dagger. At Level 1 it lets you consume 100 Resolve to leap into the air and unleash a flurry of rapid strikes. At Level 2 each strike applies Weak stacks. At Level 3 each strike gains +15% Critical Chance. At Level 4 critical hits deal +50% critical damage. This Tarstone is one of the best in the game if you invest in it.
    • 26 Ova — a beacon spawns in Magdalena’s Glade after she dies. Cleanse it to claim a large Ova haul and 1 Glimpse. You are teleported back to Marrow Keep automatically when you cleanse a gate beacon. Use that trip to upgrade weapons, sell items, and unlock Shell memories.

To upgrade Magdalena’s Memento, bring the Etching Needles you picked up on the approach to Franz at Marrow Keep. This unlocks the Tarforge upgrade chain for this Tarstone. See our full Tarforge guide to understand how the upgrade system works.

The Axe and Dagger that this Tarstone pairs with can be found early in the game. If you have not picked it up yet, check our guide on how to get the Axe and Dagger in Mortal Shell 2.

    Quick Tips for Beating Magdalena

    • Do not try to parry her charges. They are unparryable. Dodge sideways every time.
    • Use the arena edges. Staying near the walls baits the charge attack, which gives you your best punish window when she crashes.
    • Prioritise Magdalena over the Tar Babies. She is wide open during the summon phase. Use area attacks to handle the minions as you go, not as a separate task.
    • Bait her out of the fly swarm. Do not push through it. Move to clean ground and wait for her to follow.
    • Use ranged weapons between punish windows. Sidearms let you deal damage safely from outside her attack range.
    • Summon Smert. The spirit distraction buys you time to reposition and heal during the later phases.
    • Pick up the Etching Needles before entering. The chest on the right before the tunnel entrance. Missing this delays Tarstone upgrades.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Magdalena the Lady of the Woods in Mortal Shell 2?

Magdalena is found at the end of the Glutted Mire dungeon, behind the first Corrupted Gate in Fainweald. Cleanse the Mushroom Village Gate beacon east of Mushroom Village to enter. Follow the path through the Sunken Village, drop down at the altar, and go through the tunnel to trigger the boss fight.

Can you parry Magdalena in Mortal Shell 2?

Some of Magdalena’s attacks can be parried, but her charge attack is unparryable. Trying to parry the charge will not protect you. Dodging is the safer and more reliable approach for most of the fight. Focus on reading her attack animation, dodging the dangerous moves, and punishing her during recovery frames.

What is the best Shell to use against Magdalena?

Tiel is the best Shell for this fight because of his high speed and shadow attack ability, which can stagger Magdalena and open her up for a Riposte. If you do not have Tiel yet, Harros works but requires more patience. Check our guide on finding your first Shell and our best shells for beginners to see all your options.

What does Magdalena drop in Mortal Shell 2?

Defeating Magdalena drops Magdalena’s Memento, a Tarstone that unlocks a powerful aerial strike ability for the Axe and Dagger. Cleansing the beacon that spawns in her arena after the fight rewards 26 Ova and 1 Glimpse, which are both important resources for story progression and Shell upgrades.
