How Many Bosses Are There in Mortal Shell 2?
Mortal Shell 2 has 10 major story bosses throughout the main campaign. Six sit behind the Infested Gates of Fainweald and Mammon, three guard corrupted tendrils inside the final dungeon, and one final encounter pits you against Zmey the Uninvited. On top of those, there are around 36 additional minibosses and optional encounters scattered across the open world, bringing the total across sources to roughly 46 named boss fights in the full game.
Mandatory bosses are the ones you must face and defeat to progress the story. The rest of the world is relatively open, so you are free to explore and tackle areas in the order that suits you.
Mortal Shell 2 All Major Story Bosses
Six Corrupted Gate dungeons sit in the overworld — the Glutted Mire, Sanguine Caverns, and Prisoners’ Domain in Fainweald, and the Conquered Temple, Withered Shoals, and Faded Citadel in Mammon. Upon defeating a major boss, a beacon spawns. These beacons contain the Ova that fuel your story progress.
Fainweald Major Bosses
1. Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods

Location: Glutted Mire, Sunken Village area — Magdalena will likely be your first major boss fight. Drop down to the platform she stands on and the fight immediately begins. Her notable attacks include Cart Ram (she barrels straight into you), Fire Spin (she spins creating a torrent of fire), and Blown Babies (she summons Tar Babies that explode near you). Reward: Magdalena’s Memento — unlocks a special ability for the Axe and Dagger.
2. The Lost Child

Location: Blood Caves (Sanguine Caverns), Fainweald. The entrance is behind one of Fainweald’s Infected Gates. The Lost Child combines ranged attacks, area strikes, and a dangerous grab — do not stay directly in front of it for long. Watch out for its Digestion and Excretion grab attack — this is the most dangerous move in the fight. Summon Tiel before entering the cave to help with this one.
3. The Nameless Captive

Location: Prisoners’ Domain, Fainweald. This boss sits at the end of the Prisoners’ Domain gate. It is a more methodical fight than Magdalena but hits very hard. Take your time reading its attacks before committing to parries or combos.
Mammon Major Bosses
4. Droeg the Conqueror

Location: Conquered Temple, Mammon. Droeg is a huge opponent armed with a bone club. Almost all of his normal attacks have impressive reach. At close range he uses heavy sweeping attacks — dodge forward and to the side rather than backward to slip behind him. When a red glow appears around Droeg, he is preparing to launch several homing fire projectiles. Stop attacking and prepare to dodge the volley before going back in. Reward: Conqueror’s Reward for the Black Needle. Shell summon: Gragu.
5. Hexapod

Location: Withered Shoals, Mammon. Despite its unusual appearance, Hexapod’s attacks are fairly easy to read. Before striking with its tentacles, it opens its body wide and exposes its head. Use that window aggressively. This is a good fight to use parries on because the telegraphs are clear and consistent.
6. Isaac, the Scholar Prince

Location: Faded Citadel, Mammon. Isaac is a spell-heavy boss who controls the arena at range. He is one of the trickier mid-game fights because of how his attacks mix magic with melee. Close the gap fast and keep pressure on him to limit his casting windows.
The Unfound Path — Final Dungeon Bosses
The Unfound Path is the endgame dungeon and it only unlocks once you have collected enough Ova. The platform at its centre is sealed off by tendrils. Three branching segments each hold a guardian, and only after all three are dead can you destroy the tendrils and reach the last fight.
7. Malborn Offspring (First Tendril Guardian)

One of three guardians blocking access to the final encounter. Located in one of the branching segments of the Unfound Path. Defeat all three tendril guardians to unlock the endgame.
8. Prophet of Profane Infinities (Second Tendril Guardian)

Found in a second branching segment of the Unfound Path. A challenging fight with heavy area attacks. Clear this alongside the other two guardians before the final fight unlocks.
9. Sester Secundus (Third Tendril Guardian)

Sester Secundus is a stronger version of the Tempestress. It can shoot from distance, perform an unparryable dash, swing its blade, and slip behind you. The main strategy is to parry its forward thrust that ends on an overhead swing, or dodge and wait for a clean attack window.
10. Zmey the Uninvited (Final Boss)

The last encounter pits you against Zmey the Uninvited. This is a massive, multi-phase fight that draws on everything you have learned. Make sure your Shell, weapons, and Tarstones are fully upgraded before attempting it. Before tackling the harder fights, upgrade your preferred Shell, primary and secondary weapons, and Tarstones.
Mortal Shell 2 All Minibosses List
Minibosses are optional encounters in both regions. They are not required to complete the story, but defeating bosses is generally a good idea because they reward a lot of Gloom and often drop a Tarstone, not to mention the actual player experience you gain. Many also unlock Shells and open up new areas.
Before you go miniboss hunting, having the right gear makes a huge difference. Check our guide on the best Tarstones for beginners to know which drops are worth prioritising.
Fainweald Minibosses
- Tar Golem — Disciple’s Grotto area. This is the tutorial boss. The encounter is designed to be a loss, but it is possible to defeat it if you want the challenge.
- Gloombound Ritualist — End of a swampy path in early Fainweald. Drops Gloom and unlocks the Sester Genessa Shell when two are defeated at the Abbey Entrance Beacon.
- Tainted Vestige — Found by dropping down from a bridge. A smaller optional encounter that drops useful early Gloom.
- Great Arbiter of Flesh — Southeast of Widow’s Overlook Beacon. A tall boss that uses a two-handed greatsword. Drops the Arbiter’s Prize Tarstone.
- Vrannic, the Grand Illusionist — Inside the Mushroom Village Gate Beacon. A spellcaster boss. Drops the Volatile Fragment Tarstone.
- Circle of the Grasping Root — Inside the Seeping Mire Beacon. A living tree boss with roots growing from its body, primarily using its limbs to attack and inflicting burning effects.
- The Wandering Shepherd — Sunken Village, near the Sunken Village Beacon. Killing the sheep around him builds Break Damage so you can Riposte, but once he shifts into his Tarblighted form at half health, stop focusing the sheep and pressure the boss instead. Drops the Sheephead Totem and Tarblighted Trophy.
- Lucian, the Thirsting Knight — Stonebled Gate Beacon. Defeating Lucian is mandatory to cleanse the Stonebled Gate beacon, which grants access to the Sanguine Caverns gate. Drops the Serpent Stone Tarstone.
- Tarblighted Stoner — Sanguine Caverns past Sanguine Shoreline Beacon. A larger version of the regular Stoner enemy. It summons Woodmen to help during the fight. Drops the Tarred Fragment.
- Bloodcursed Lithopod — Found southeast of the Feeding Grounds entrance. Drops the Justiciar’s Stone and opens the nearby cave.
- Grisha — Various locations across Fainweald. Standard optional encounter with big damage and predictable attack windows.
- The Warden — Citadel of Penance Beacon area. Drops onto you from an elevator. Switch to Tiel to use speed against this one.
- Vrago, Solikar Champion — Nocthean Gate Beacon, Abandoned Shrine dungeon. A lightning-dealing boss required to access the Prisoner’s Domain gate. Drops the Voltaic Crown Tarstone.
- Tishina’s Confessor — Prisoners’ Domain area. Drops the Confessor’s Keepsake.
- Rabid Grisha Pack — Holding Cells dungeon. A group encounter rather than a single boss. Drops the Inflamed Clawstone.
Mammon Minibosses
- Urrig, the Executioner — Conquered Temple past Winterglass Lake Beacon. Drops the Warden’s Stone Tarstone.
- Caged Grisha — Winterglass Lake Beacon area, inside the Grisha Hunting Grounds Dungeon. Drops the Fusillade Stone.
- Solnir, the Gloom Seeker — Faded Citadel past Citadel Annex Beacon. This fight takes place between two blue flames — extinguish them before you can deal damage to the boss. Drops the Solnir Shard.
- Strange Grisha — Withered Shoals island across the Bone Gate. Drops the Strange Remnant.
- Infested Miner — Gate of Mammon Beacon, Burrowkin Dwelling Dungeon. A larger Miner holding two pickaxes, performing rampaging attacks and invoking Lithopods from the ground. Drops the Wretchcaller’s Stone.
- Gloombound Wraith — Gate of Infinity Beacon, Forbidden Archives Dungeon. During the fight it creates books that protect it from damage — destroy them to make the boss vulnerable again. Drops the Curseblood Stone.
- Subjugated Guardian — Sentry’s Grave Dungeon. Ignore the surrounding enemies and focus on the boss — the enemies ranged attacks around the arena make clearing them first very difficult.
- Lord Vellen of Mammon — Royal Crypts of Mammon. Defeat this boss to find and unlock the Lazlo Shell behind him.
- Sariel, the Endless — Chamber of Becoming Dungeon, southeast Silent Steps Beacon. Defeat him the first time to open a passage, follow him through the dungeon, and defeat him again. Break all four stone tablets in the final room to stop him reviving permanently. Unlocks Sariel as a playable Shell.
- Servants of the Scholar-Prince — Faded Citadel area. A multi-enemy encounter tied to the Isaac questline.
General Boss Tips for Mortal Shell 2
No matter which boss you are facing, a few habits carry across every fight in the game.
- Learn the attack before you commit to parrying it. Watch a few attempts first. Parrying is one of the most powerful tools you have in the game — but it only pays off when you know what is coming.
- Fill the Break meter. Attacking enemies, parrying their attacks, and dealing Break damage fills the yellow meter below their health bar. When it fills, you can step in for a Riposte and deal serious damage.
- Use spirit summons. Several boss encounters allow you to permanently summon a Shell warrior as a spirit ally for 1 Glimpse. This costs very little and can absorb attacks and pressure the boss while you recover.
- Come back later if you are stuck. Much of Fainweald and Mammon can be explored before clearing every Infested Gate, so there is usually nothing stopping you from leaving a difficult boss, gathering upgrades, and returning later.
- Use the right Shell. Some bosses suit fast Shells like Tiel, others suit tanky Shells like Eredrim. Check our best shells guide before heading into a tough fight.
- Upgrade at Tarforge before the final dungeon. The Unfound Path bosses do not give you room to underperform. Hit our Tarforge guide before entering to make sure your weapons are ready.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many bosses are in Mortal Shell 2?
There are 10 major story bosses in Mortal Shell 2. Beyond these, there are roughly 36 additional minibosses and optional encounters spread across Fainweald and Mammon, bringing the total named boss count to around 46 across the full game.
Can you skip bosses in Mortal Shell 2?
Mandatory bosses are the ones you must face and defeat to progress the story. Optional bosses do not block campaign progress. That said, optional bosses drop Tarstones and Gloom that make the rest of the game significantly easier, so skipping them is rarely worth it.
What order should you fight bosses in Mortal Shell 2?
The first six bosses do not have to be defeated in a strict order. If one opponent turns out to be too strong, you can return to the open world, upgrade your Shell and weapons, find new Tarstones, and try again later. A good approach is to explore each region fully for miniboss Tarstones before tackling the Corrupted Gate major bosses.
What do you get for defeating bosses in Mortal Shell 2?
Major bosses drop an Ova — the item you need to unlock the Unfound Path and progress the main story. They also drop unique ability Tarstones tied to specific weapons. Minibosses drop combat and infusion Tarstones. Some bosses also unlock Shells as playable characters and let you permanently summon a spirit ally before subsequent fights in that arena.
