    TL;DR

    • Parry is not available from the start — you need the Infinite Seal first.
    • Get it from Sester Genessa at Marrow Keep after completing her Guard tutorial.
    • On PS5 press L1, on Xbox press LB, on PC press Q.
    • Parry just before the attack lands — not too early, not after it hits you.
    • A successful parry fills the enemy’s Break meter, which opens them up for a Riposte triggered by a light attack on the red dot.
    • You cannot parry attacks marked with a red circle — dodge those instead. Enemies can now give an audible warning before unparryable attacks as of the Week 1 Patch.
    • The Week 1 Patch overhauled Ripostes — damage now scales with enemy health, iFrames last the full animation, recovery is faster, and wall clipping during Ripostes is fixed.

Learning how to parry in Mortal Shell 2 is one of the most important skills in the game. It is a high-risk, high-reward move that can completely change how fights feel. Land it right and you fill the enemy’s Break meter fast, stagger them, and deal massive damage with a Riposte. Miss it and you eat a full hit with zero protection. This guide covers everything — how to unlock parrying, the exact button inputs, timing tips, and what happens after a successful parry. It has been updated to reflect the Week 1 Patch (August 29, 2026), which significantly overhauled how Ripostes work.

How to Unlock Parry in Mortal Shell 2

You do not start with the parry ability. The game gives you the Untarnished Seal early in the prologue, which lets you block attacks and perform a Perfect Guard. You also get Vatra’s Seal which enables the Harden mechanic — turning your character to stone to absorb a hit.

To unlock parrying, you need the Infinite Seal. Here is how to get it step by step.

    Infinite Seal Mortal Shell 2

Step 1 — Reach Marrow Keep

Play through the prologue until you arrive at Marrow Keep. This becomes your main hub throughout the game. It has several NPCs, a training area, and everything you need to prepare before heading out into the world.

Step 2 — Find Sester Genessa

From the Marrow Keep Beacon, head through the exit that leads into a cavern. You will find a round arena surrounded by white stone coffins lit by candles. A masked woman stands in the middle — that is Sester Genessa. Speak to her to start a short combat tutorial.

Step 3 — Complete the Guard Tutorial

Sester Genessa will attack you in a controlled sequence. She flashes yellow to signal when to guard. Press the guard button three times at the right moment to block her attacks. After three successful guards, do a Riposte. Once you complete this, she hands you the Infinite Seal as a reward.

Step 4 — Equip the Infinite Seal

Go into your inventory and equip the Infinite Seal. As soon as it is equipped, you gain the Parry passive ability. Note that equipping the Infinite Seal means you can no longer Guard or Harden. It is a full swap — you are committing to a parry playstyle.

How to Parry in Mortal Shell 2 — Button Inputs

Once you have the Infinite Seal equipped, parrying uses the same button as guarding, but the behaviour is different. You tap it instead of holding it.

    • PS5: Press L1
    • Xbox: Press LB
    • PC (Keyboard): Press Q

When you press the button, your character swings their left hand outward holding the Seal. This is the wind-up animation. If an enemy’s attack connects during the active frames of that swing, you successfully parry it. Unlike guarding, you cannot hold down the parry button. It triggers the animation immediately every time you press it.

Parry Timing — How to Get It Right

This is where most players struggle. The timing window in Mortal Shell 2 is strict. Here is the key thing to understand — you need your Seal to meet the attack halfway. Do not press the button the moment the enemy starts moving. Do not wait until the attack is about to hit your face either.

Watch the enemy’s wind-up. When their weapon is at the top of the backswing — just as it begins to come forward — that is your cue to press the button. The Seal’s swing animation takes a brief moment to complete, so you need to press slightly earlier than your instinct tells you.

Pressing too early means the parry animation ends before the attack arrives and you take full damage.
Pressing too late means the attack already hit you before the parry activates.

The sweet spot is in between. Anticipate the attack — do not react to it. If you learned the parry rhythm during the Open Beta or early Devout Edition access, note that the Day One Patch aligned the two parry animations so they now have matching windows, and corrected the parry flare visual cue so it lines up with the actual active frames. If your timing felt off at any point early on, that was the cause — and it has been fixed.

Watch the Enemy, Not the Weapon

A useful trick is to watch the enemy’s shoulder or wrist rather than the tip of the weapon. The moment the shoulder snaps forward to deliver the blow is your signal to press the parry button. Tracking the weapon tip causes you to press too late almost every time.

    Do Not Mash the Button

Panic-pressing the parry button repeatedly is one of the fastest ways to die. If you miss a parry, the recovery animation leaves you completely open. Take one hit, reset your position, and try again on the next attack. One clean parry is worth more than five missed ones.

What Happens After a Successful Parry

A successful parry does two things. It cancels all damage from the incoming attack. It also deals a large chunk of Break damage to the enemy.

Every enemy in Mortal Shell 2 has a Break meter — the yellow bar below their health bar. One parry fills significantly more of that meter than a Perfect Guard. In fact, a single parry is roughly equivalent to three successful Perfect Guards in terms of Break damage.

When the Break meter is completely full, the enemy becomes staggered and a red dot appears on their body. At that point, press your light attack on that spot to trigger a Riposte. Note that as of the Day One Patch, only light attacks trigger a Riposte — heavy attacks no longer work for this. A Riposte deals massive damage — far more than any normal attack. Against regular enemies it can finish them outright. Against bosses it deals heavy posture damage and can restore your health.

The Week 1 Patch overhauled Ripostes significantly. Riposte damage now scales with enemy health, so it stays effective in the late game, Night Mode, and New Game Plus rather than falling off. The invulnerability window now lasts through the full Riposte animation rather than expiring midway — giving you better protection while the move plays out. Recovery is also faster, returning control to you sooner after each Riposte. A bug that caused Ripostes to deal damage twice or fail to deal damage at all has also been fixed, so the system is now reliable. If your back is against a wall during a Riposte, you will no longer clip through it — another fix in this patch. Ripostes also have new audio stingers.

Parry vs Guard vs Harden — Which Is Better?

Mortal Shell 2 gives you three different Seals and each one changes your core defensive move. You can only equip one at a time, so this is a real build decision.

    • Untarnished Seal (Guard): Hold the button to block. Timed well, a Perfect Guard deals a small amount of Break damage. Safe but slow at filling the Break meter. Best for beginners.
    • Vatra’s Seal (Harden): Turns you to stone and absorbs one hit. Works on a cooldown. Forgiving timing and good for learning enemy patterns.
    • Infinite Seal (Parry): Highest Break damage per use. Fastest way to fill the meter and land Ripostes. Tight timing, no margin for error, no fallback defense. Following the Week 1 Patch, Ripostes from the Infinite Seal are even more rewarding — health-scaling damage means parrying into a Riposte stays strong through Night Mode and late game where it previously fell off.

The Infinite Seal is the aggressive option. If you play it well, enemies go down faster than with any other Seal. If your timing is off, you take every hit directly. Most players start with the Untarnished Seal or Vatra’s Seal and switch to the Infinite Seal once they know enemy attack patterns well.

Want to build around Break damage without fully committing to parry? Some Tarstones — like Stillblade’s Stone and Hand of Rock — let you deal Break damage directly, giving you another way to set up Ripostes.

    What You Cannot Parry

Not every attack in the game can be parried. Some enemy moves are unblockable. These are usually indicated by a flashing red circle icon on the attack. When you see that icon, do not try to parry. Dodge instead. Attempting to parry an unblockable attack is one of the most common reasons players take massive damage at the wrong moment. As of the Week 1 Patch, enemies can now play an audible warning before unparryable attacks, giving you an additional cue to dodge rather than parry.

Boss fights often mix parryable and unparryable attacks in the same combo. Learning which attacks are which is part of the skill. If the enemy’s weapon flashes white during the wind-up, the attack is parryable. If it flashes orange or red, dodge away.

    Parry Tips for Beginners

    • Practice on weak enemies first. Do not try to learn parry timing on bosses. Find regular enemies in early areas and practice until the timing feels natural.
    • Use Sester Genessa for practice. After unlocking the Infinite Seal, you can ask Genessa to run through training again. She attacks in a controlled, predictable way — perfect for getting your timing down before heading back out. The Week 1 Patch fixed her dashes, so the training arena should behave more consistently than at launch.
    • Observe the enemy before committing. Watch a few attacks before you try to parry. Even if you mistime it once, knowing the attack pattern helps you dodge rather than eating a follow-up hit.
    • Listen for the unparryable warning. After the Week 1 Patch, enemies now play an audible cue before unparryable attacks. Use this as an additional signal to switch from parry to dodge on that move.
    • Riposte with a light attack, not a heavy. Since the Day One Patch, only light attacks trigger the Riposte when the red dot appears. Heavy attacks no longer set it off — press the light attack button on the red dot.
    • The Infinite Seal pairs well with Harros the Vassal. If you are using Harros as your Shell, his Stone Stun ability builds the Break meter on enemies. While Stone Stun is on cooldown, parrying helps fill the meter faster.
    • Do not waste Ripostes on weak enemies. If there is a tough fight or a boss coming up, save your Break meter. A Riposte on a difficult enemy is worth much more than finishing off a grunt. With damage now scaling to enemy health after the Week 1 Patch, Ripostes are proportionally more valuable against tougher targets.

How Parry Connects to the Rest of Combat

Parrying is not just a defensive move in Mortal Shell 2 — it is the engine that powers the entire offensive loop. The game wants you to be aggressive. Chipping at enemy health slowly works, but the Break meter system rewards players who parry, fill the meter, and Riposte. It is faster, it heals you, and it is how the game is actually designed to be played.

The more you understand enemy attack patterns, the more parrying becomes a rhythm rather than a gamble. Bosses in Mortal Shell 2 often have predictable sequences once you study them. Parrying the first hit of a combo, landing a Riposte with a light attack, then dodging the rest of the sequence is a reliable way to handle even the hardest fights. With the Week 1 Patch improvements to Riposte damage scaling, invulnerability windows, and recovery speed, the payoff for landing a clean parry is now better than it has ever been.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can you parry without the Infinite Seal in Mortal Shell 2?

No. Parrying is locked behind the Infinite Seal. Without it equipped, pressing the defense button will either Guard or Harden depending on which other Seal you have. You must complete Sester Genessa’s tutorial at Marrow Keep to earn the Infinite Seal before parrying becomes available.

What is the difference between Parry and Perfect Guard in Mortal Shell 2?

A Perfect Guard uses the Untarnished Seal and requires you to hold and time the block correctly. It deals a small amount of Break damage. A Parry uses the Infinite Seal and deals significantly more Break damage — roughly three times more per successful hit. The trade-off is that parry timing is much stricter and there is no partial protection if you miss. After the Week 1 Patch, Ripostes following a parry also deal damage that scales with enemy health, making the payoff for a successful parry even higher in late game and Night Mode.

What happens if I miss a parry in Mortal Shell 2?

If you miss the parry timing, the animation still plays but you take full damage from the attack. The recovery frames on a missed parry leave you vulnerable for a moment, so you may even eat a follow-up hit. This is why the Infinite Seal is considered high risk — there is no damage reduction for a close miss.

Can you parry boss attacks in Mortal Shell 2?

Yes, most boss attacks can be parried as long as they are weapon-based melee strikes. Grab attacks, area-of-effect bursts, projectiles, and moves marked with a red circle cannot be parried. The Week 1 Patch added audible warnings before unparryable attacks, giving you an extra cue to dodge instead. For boss fights, learn the moveset first on a few attempts before committing to parrying. Once you know which attacks are parryable, the Infinite Seal can make boss fights significantly shorter — and with Riposte damage now scaling to enemy health, the reward for landing parries against tough bosses is greater than at launch.
