All Tarstone Locations in Mortal Shell 2 – Complete List (75 Tarstones)

All Tarstone locations in Mortal Shell 2 listed by type — Support, Combat, Infusion, and Ability. Find all 75 Tarstones including hidden chests, boss drops, trials, and Night Mode vendors.

All Tarstone locations in Mortal Shell 2 are spread across every region in Fainweald and Mammon, hidden in chests, dropped by bosses and minibosses, earned from trials, and sold by night-only vendors. There are 75 in total. You need to collect 73 of them to unlock the Stoned Trophy and Achievement. None are permanently missable — you can grab every single one in free roam after the final boss before entering New Game Plus — and the Berserker’s Stone bug that locked players out of the Temple of Vatra has been fixed in the Week 1 Patch, so the original missability warning no longer applies on updated game versions. This guide lists every Tarstone in menu order, sorted by type, with clear directions to each one. Before you start collecting, read our Tarstone upgrade guide so you know how to push each stone to its full potential once you have it, and check our Mortal Shell 2 beginner’s guide for the full picture of how Tarstones fit into your build.

What Are Tarstones in Mortal Shell 2?

Tarstones are equippable stones that slot into your weapons, sidearms, and Shell to add passive bonuses or new active abilities. They come in four types. Support Tarstones give stat boosts like critical hit chance and stagger damage. Combat Tarstones add damage modifiers and conditional effects triggered during combat. Infusion Tarstones add elemental status effects like Burn, Bleed, Frost, or Curse to your weapon on hit. Ability Tarstones add brand-new active moves to your weapons or sidearms.

You can equip up to 10 Tarstones at once: 4 Shell-compatible Support slots plus 2 each for Combat, Infusion, and Ability. Not every Tarstone works with every weapon — always check compatibility before building around a specific stone. Each Tarstone can be upgraded up to level 4 at the Tarforge once you have the Etching Needles. The Week 1 Patch fixed a bug where Tarstones continued to gather XP after reaching maximum level, and also fixed missing tooltips across several stones — so upgrade info should now display correctly for all entries. To find the right stones for your Shell and weapon combination, see our best Tarstones for beginners guide.

How to Get All Tarstones — Source Types

Before diving into the full list, here is a quick overview of how Tarstones are obtained so you know what to prepare for.

  • World chests: Most Tarstones sit in bone chests or regular chests scattered through overworld zones and dungeons. Some are in plain sight. Others are behind hidden walls, locked gates, or require a key to access.
  • Offering chests (candle puzzles): Several Tarstones are locked in offering chests that only open after you light three candles in the area. The candles are always nearby — look for lit torches or small flame sources on pillars, railings, and cages.
  • Boss and miniboss drops: Every major story boss drops a unique Ability Tarstone. Many minibosses also drop Tarstones as their reward.
  • Combat Trials: Trial monuments scattered across the world trigger timed combat challenges. Completing the trial rewards a Tarstone from the monument.
  • Corrupted Beacons: Progressing through Beacon dungeons often places a Tarstone chest along the path. Cleanse the Beacon and grab it on your way through.
  • Merchants: Merrick in Marrow Keep sells two Tarstones, and now also sells Fragile Tarstones after the Week 1 Patch. The Tavern Keeper at the One-Legged Wolf Tavern sells one. The Collector, a night-only vendor south of Abandoned Outpost Beacon, sells four. Merrick restocks Fragile Tarstones as you progress, and after you have gathered enough Ova he also sells Glimpse Stones and Egon’s Stones.
  • Fragile Tarstones (new — Week 1 Patch): A new class of Tarstone that breaks after losing durability and yields a Tarcore when it does. These include the Glimpse Stone (breaks into Glimpses) and Egon’s Stone (revives you at a dungeon entrance and prevents Gloom loss on break). Certain enemies now drop them and several dungeons reward them. They are not unique — you can find multiple copies per playthrough.

Use fast travel to move between Beacons efficiently when hunting Tarstones across regions. Check all Beacon locations to make sure you have not missed a dungeon that contains a Tarstone inside.

All Support Tarstone Locations in Mortal Shell 2

Support Tarstones provide passive stat boosts such as critical hit chance, stagger damage, Gloom drop rate, and damage bonuses. They slot into your Shell’s dedicated Support Tarstone slots. Several Support Tarstones were buffed in Balance Patch 1 — the Bulwark Stone received a significant increase to its damage reduction, and the Parasitic Stone, Grudge Stone, Clerik’s Stone, and Squall Stone were also buffed.

  • #1 – Auspicious Stone: Southeast of Widow’s Overlook Beacon, or west of Mushroom Village Beacon. In the center of Mushroom Village, light the three candles on the stone pillars to open the offering chest. The first candle is on the platform behind the chest. The second is up the path to the right. The third is on the left path from the chest, behind a house near two enemies.
  • #2 – Headman’s Stone: Southeast of Outskirts of Mammon Beacon. Go toward the ruins area with the Grisha Hunter enemies. Walk around to the northeastern part of the ruins to find a chest beside a tree.
  • #3 – Devout Stone: North of Sester’s Gate Beacon. Head up the steps to where the two ranged enemies are. Find the switch on the wall that opens the gate next to it. The chest with this Tarstone is inside.
  • #4 – Shattering Stone: From the Obsidianite Mines dungeon entrance, take the northern elevator up and follow the path west to the Collapsed Mine dungeon. Progress through the dungeon until the path splits left and right. The left dead-end has a chest with this Tarstone.
  • #5 – Berserker’s Stone: East of One-Legged Wolf Beacon. Follow the path east through the Bone Gate to the Temple of Vatra. Go up the stairs and on the left is an area with an offering chest. Light two candles on the left of the statue and one on the right to open it. The Temple of Vatra lock-out bug that previously made this stone missable has been fixed in the Week 1 Patch — if you are on an updated version, you can return to collect it at any time even after the Heart of Vatra event. If you are on a pre-patch save and have not yet collected it, grab it before the Heart of Vatra to be safe.
  • #6 – Marksman’s Stone: North of Mushroom Village Gate Beacon, or east of Mushroom Village Beacon. Follow the upper path northeast. The chest is in the middle of a group of three enemies.
  • #7 – Deadeye Stone: In the Sanguine Caverns area. From the entrance, follow the path and drop down to the first camp area on the left. The chest is inside that camp.
  • #8 – Siegebreaker’s Stone: In the Glutted Mire area, in the first swamp section. Light three candles to open the offering chest. The third is in the cage with the enemy behind the stone pillars.
  • #9 – Spite Stone: Directly north of Abandoned Outpost Beacon. Ring the bell to create a path on the bridge to the Bellkeeper’s Corner dungeon entrance. Progress inside and open the chest on the small platform by the bell.
  • #10 – Bulwark Stone: South of Citadel of Penance Beacon. Find the gate on the southwestern part of the wall and open it with the lever. Follow the path past four enemies to a chest at the end of the broken bridge. This stone received a significant increase to its damage reduction in Balance Patch 1, making it notably stronger than at launch.
  • #11 – Retribution Stone: North of Widow’s Overlook Beacon. Activate and complete the Combat Trial to receive this Tarstone.
  • #12 – Gloombound Stone: Northeast of Blackridge Pass Beacon. Go to the graveyard area named Stones of Remembrance. The chest is in the center ruined building. Head down the body of water, clear the three enemies, then turn left into the ruins to find it. It will eventually break with use, but additional copies can be found in the world and purchased from Merrick.
  • #13 – Justiciar’s Stone: Southeast of the Feeding Grounds dungeon entrance. In the swampy area to the north, defeat the group miniboss named Broodshell Swarm. The Tarstone is in the cave directly behind it. This stone has also been converted to a Fragile Tarstone in the Week 1 Patch — stronger passive bonus and an added on-break effect. Additional copies can be found and purchased from Merrick.

All Infusion Tarstone Locations in Mortal Shell 2

Infusion Tarstones add elemental status effects to your weapon or sidearm, such as Burn, Bleed, Poison, Frost, Shock, Curse, and Stasis. Most require Resolve to activate and are triggered by pressing the infusion button during combat. Some upgrade to become permanent infusions at higher levels. Environmental status hazards were also reworked in the Week 1 Patch, including a new handler for Stasis, which may affect how Stasis-infusion Tarstones interact with the world. All Ability Tarstone Locations in Mortal Shell 2

Ability Tarstones add completely new active attacks to your weapons and sidearms. Most are dropped by major story bosses, making them tied to your natural story progression. A handful are sold by vendors or found in specific dungeons. Pairing the right Ability Tarstone with the right weapon can completely change your playstyle. The Axatana’s combat Tarstone active now triggers correctly as of the Week 1 Patch, so builds centered on that weapon’s Ability Tarstone slot now work as intended. See our all boss list to track which story bosses you still need to defeat.

How to Unlock Night Mode and Access The Collector

Four Tarstones (Weeping Stone, Infused Stone, Fulminant Stone, and Infested Stone) are only available from The Collector, a vendor who only appears at night. Here is how to unlock Night Mode.

  • Find the Gloombound Flame near the Great Arbiter of Flesh boss area, close to the Widow’s Overlook Beacon.
  • Return to Marrow Keep and climb to the top. Light the extinguished lantern on the roof with the Gloombound Flame.
  • This causes Thestus to appear in Marrow Keep. Talk to Thestus to toggle Night Mode on and off.
  • With Night Mode active, travel to directly south of Abandoned Outpost Beacon. The Collector will be standing there.
  • Purchase each of the four Tarstones from him for 1,500 Gold each.

Night Mode increases enemy difficulty and makes enemies more dangerous, but also increases Gloom and Gold income per kill. Use our fast Gloom farming guide for the best spots to grind the Gold you need for these purchases.

Tarstone Collection Tips

  • The Berserker’s Stone Temple of Vatra bug has been fixed. If you are on the Week 1 Patch or later, the lock-out that previously made this stone missable is resolved and you can return to collect it at any time. If you are still on an unpatched save, grab it before the Heart of Vatra event to be safe.
  • Offering chest candles never despawn. If you lit one or two candles and left before finishing the puzzle, the candles you already lit will still be active when you return.
  • Fake walls have white markings. If a chest appears to be behind a solid wall with no path, check the wall surface for a white painted mark or symbol. Hit it to reveal the opening.
  • The Stoned Trophy requires 73 out of 75. You do not need all 75 to get the achievement, which gives you a small buffer if one is bugged or you miss a vendor purchase.
  • Unlock Night Mode early so you can buy the four Collector Tarstones and still have time to upgrade them before the end of your run.
  • Upgrade Tarstones as you find them. Each stone earns XP only while equipped, so slot new finds immediately. The Week 1 Patch fixed a bug where Tarstones kept accumulating XP past their maximum level, so your upgrade progress should now track accurately. See our full Tarstone upgrade guide for the upgrade process and Tarcore farming strategy. Tarcores are no longer a finite resource as of the Week 1 Patch, so you can max out all the Tarstones you want in a single run.
  • Keep spare Gloombound and Justiciar’s Stones. Both have been converted to Fragile Tarstones in the Week 1 Patch — they now break after extended use. Buy replacements from Merrick or keep an eye out for additional copies in the world so you are never without them.
  • Choose Tarstones that match your Shell and weapon. A great Tarstone on a mismatched weapon underperforms. See our best Shells tier list and Tarforge guide to pair everything correctly.
  • All Tarstones carry into New Game Plus. If you miss any stones, you can collect them in NG+ free roam. None require starting fresh.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Tarstones are in Mortal Shell 2?

There are 75 Tarstones in total. They are split into four types: 13 Support, 23 Combat, 17 Infusion, and 22 Ability. You only need to collect 73 of them to unlock the Stoned Trophy and Achievement. The Week 1 Patch also added new Fragile Tarstones — including the Glimpse Stone and Egon’s Stone — which break after losing durability and yield a Tarcore or Glimpses when they do. These are found in the world, dropped by enemies, and sold by Merrick.

Are any Tarstones missable in Mortal Shell 2?

No. As of the Week 1 Patch, the bug that made the Berserker’s Stone at the Temple of Vatra permanently inaccessible has been fixed. Every Tarstone can now be collected in free roam after the final boss, before entering New Game Plus. If you are still on an unpatched save, collect the Berserker’s Stone before triggering the Heart of Vatra event as a precaution. The Stoned Trophy only requires 73 out of 75, so even an unresolved edge case would not block the achievement as long as you collect everything else.

How do you unlock The Collector vendor in Mortal Shell 2?

You unlock The Collector by enabling Night Mode. Find the Gloombound Flame near the Great Arbiter of Flesh boss by Widow’s Overlook Beacon, return to Marrow Keep, and use it to light the lantern on the rooftop. This summons Thestus, who lets you toggle Night Mode. Once Night Mode is active, The Collector appears south of Abandoned Outpost Beacon and sells four Tarstones for 1,500 Gold each.

Do Tarstones carry over to New Game Plus in Mortal Shell 2?

Yes. All Tarstones carry into New Game Plus, including their upgrade levels. If you miss any during your first run, you can collect them in NG+ free roam before starting the second playthrough’s story content. Your Tarstone XP and upgrades also persist, so stones you have been leveling throughout your run will keep their progress. Tarcores are no longer a finite resource as of the Week 1 Patch, so maxing out Tarstones in a single playthrough is now achievable without rationing.

Bottom Line

Collecting all 75 Tarstones in Mortal Shell 2 is one of the most rewarding things you can do in the game. Every region has multiple stones waiting in chests, dungeons, and trial monuments, and the boss-dropped Ability Tarstones give you a direct reason to engage with every major fight rather than skipping ahead. The collection is generous with its two-stone buffer for the Stoned Trophy, and following the Week 1 Patch the previously tricky Berserker’s Stone bug has been resolved and Tarcores are now unlimited — so there is no longer any reason to hold back on upgrading your favorite stones. Find them, slot them, and push every one to its maximum level.
