Mortal Shell 2 gives you eight dead warriors to possess, and picking the right one changes everything. Each Shell has its own HP, abilities, passives, and playstyle. Some melt bosses in seconds. Others let you explore forever without resting. A few will punish you hard if you pick them too early. This tier list breaks down all eight Shells, ranks them clearly, and tells you exactly which one to use first, which one to invest your rare Glimpse in, and which ones are worth saving for later. Check our Mortal Shell 2 beginner’s guide if you are just starting out, and see our all Shell locations guide to find every body in the world.
This tier list is based on the August 2026 launch build, including the day-one patch and Balance Patch 1. Rankings reflect community consensus from guide sites, Steam discussions, and post-patch testing.

How the Shell System Works in Mortal Shell 2
Before diving into the rankings, here is a quick breakdown of how Shells work so the tier list makes sense.
You find Shells as dead bodies scattered across the world. Possessing one and completing its first Memory permanently unlocks it. You can switch Shells freely at any Beacon or through Zhirelle the Shellkeeper in Marrow Keep at no cost. All unlocked passives stay active when you switch. Learn how to level up and use Gloom early so you can spend Shell Points efficiently.
There are two progression currencies. Shell Points are a shared pool earned by leveling your Harbinger with Gloom at Beacons. You spend them on passives in any Shell’s tree and can respec them freely at any Beacon. Glimpse is rare and non-refundable. You get it from chests, cleansing Corrupted Beacons, and NPC interactions. You spend it to raise a Shell’s Bond Tier from I to IV, which increases revive health, unlocks higher ability tiers, and reveals story Memories.
One playthrough gives you enough Glimpse to fully bond about two to three Shells. That makes your Glimpse choices the most important decisions in the game. Pick a main Shell early and commit. You can see all available Shells in the world using our complete Shell locations guide.
After Balance Patch 1, revealing Shell map locations costs Gloom instead of Glimpse. Any Glimpse previously spent on markers was refunded. Tiel and Proxima still get free markers right after the prologue.

Mortal Shell 2 Best Shells Tier List
Here is the full tier list for all eight playable Shells in Mortal Shell 2, ranked from best to weakest based on overall performance, ease of use, and boss-killing power.
S Tier – Best Shells in Mortal Shell 2
These three Shells stand above the rest. They have mechanics that let you trivialize the hardest content in the game. Guide site Game8 puts it plainly: Genessa, Smert, and Gragu are the top Shells in the current meta because they possess certain mechanics that make it much easier to progress through the game’s most difficult content.
- Smert the Apostate – Best for boss deletion. Highest raw power.
- Genessa the Wayward – Best damage ceiling. Best mix of power and fun.
- Gragu the Insatiable – Best sustain. Best for exploration.
A Tier – Strong Shells Worth Using
These Shells are excellent. They need slightly more setup or work better in specific situations, but all of them can carry you through the whole game comfortably.
- Tiel the Acolyte – Best beginner Shell. Scales into a boss killer.
- Proxima the Broodseeker – Great early aggressive option and the best gold farmer.
- Eredrim the Venerable – Best parry and posture-break specialist.
- Lazlo the Justiciar – Highest base HP. Best pure tank for exploration.
B Tier – Situational
- Sariel the Endless – Highest skill ceiling but collapses for most players. Great in the right hands.
Smert the Apostate – S Tier

Smert is the most overpowered Shell in Mortal Shell 2 for boss killing. His main ability, Miracle, spends 50% of his current HP to stop time and enter an unarmed Fight Stance. While time is stopped, you hit enemies and build Chaos stacks that detonate when time resumes. His passive Deadly Revelation kicks in at 10% HP or below, granting Faith and returning extra Resolve on melee hits. His Beatdown ability ends Miracle and refills Resolve.
The famous chain-Miracle loop still works after the nerf. You activate Miracle, hit the boss, drop to the Deadly Revelation threshold, Beatdown to end Miracle and refill Resolve, then cast Miracle again. Steam players describe bosses dying without getting a single attack off when this loop runs smoothly.
He was reworked hardest by the day-one patch. Miracle now costs half of Smert’s current health to activate and lasts less time than it did in the beta. There is also a known bug where you cannot swap weapons while using the Last Vow passive without switching Shells first. Despite the nerfs, he remains the top choice for raw boss dominance at the cost of being the most fragile Shell in the game. Check the full Smert the Apostate guide for the best build and Tarstone pairings.
Best for: Players who want to delete bosses fast and do not mind playing at low HP.
Avoid if: You want a forgiving Shell or dislike repetitive mechanics.
Location: Southwest of the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon, behind a blood-ritual ground with three pools.
Genessa the Wayward – S Tier

Genessa has the highest damage ceiling of any Shell. Her main ability, Faithful Doubles, summons spectral copies that charge and strike up to three times with your equipped weapon, applying the Phantom status that detonates for AoE damage. Her passive Duality means when her health depletes she enters Stray form instead of ejecting the Harbinger. In Stray form she summons doubles that mimic her attacks, letting her keep dealing damage even after taking a fatal hit.
Her damage tree includes passives like Affinity, Impetus, Instigation, Communion, and Causality, all of which stack to push her output far above the other Shells. The Mirage upgrade even lets a Stray Double tank a fatal hit for you.
Pair her with the heaviest weapon you have so each Double hits as hard as possible. Many players consider her the most enjoyable S-tier pick because she rewards active play rather than just looping one exploit. The downside is she has the longest unlock chain in the game. You need to exhaust her dialogue in Marrow Keep, beat Sester Secundus, get the Sester’s Censer, and bring it back to her. Read the full Sester Genessa guide for ability unlocks and optimal Glimpse order.
Best for: Players who want the highest damage and enjoy summoner-style mechanics.
Avoid if: You want a quick unlock or a simple playstyle.
Location: Exhaust her dialogue in Marrow Keep, then defeat Sester Secundus and bring her the Sester’s Censer.
Gragu the Insatiable – S Tier

Gragu is the best Shell for exploration and sustained combat. His Staggering Blow is a chargeable punch that deals heavy stagger and applies both Weakened and Fragile to the target. His most important ability is Revered Heart, which replaces normal healing. Instead of using your healing crystal, you heal and recharge from kills. His passive Hunger pushes his critical hit chance up dramatically when Revered Heart is depleted.
Because every enemy kill refills his healing, he can clear entire regions without ever resting at a Beacon. That makes him the best Shell for grinding Gloom, farming areas, and long exploration sessions. Check our fast Gloom farming guide for the best spots to use with Gragu.
His placement is the most debated in the community. Some rate him the best boss-cheese option. GameRant disagrees strongly, calling him absolutely terrible at facing bosses no matter how much you upgrade him, arguing that he cannot farm Revered Hearts mid-boss and his charge windows shrink against multi-phase late bosses. We keep him in S tier for his overall game impact, but know his boss performance is polarizing. Read the full Gragu the Insatiable guide before spending Glimpse on him.
Best for: Exploration, Gloom farming, early and mid-game bosses.
Avoid if: You are stuck on a late-game multi-phase boss.
Location: Bring the Heart of Vatra from the Temple of Vatra to Gragu at the One-Legged Wolf Tavern.
Tiel the Acolyte – A Tier

Tiel is the best Shell for beginners and scales into one of the strongest boss killers in the game. His active ability Lingering Shadow grants invisibility and sets up a guaranteed Shadow Strike. His passive Shadow Dash lets a perfect dodge grant invisibility and stagger damage. His deep-tree passives Ambush and Critical Role add 50% back-attack damage, 25% critical hit chance, and 120% critical damage from behind.
The loop is simple. Perfect-dodge into invisibility, reposition behind the boss, land your critical Shadow Strike. Using your healing crystal does not break invisibility, so you can heal mid-boss and reset safely. He has very low HP, which makes him feel fragile at first, but the invisibility safety net more than compensates.
He gets a free map marker after the prologue and is one of the easiest Shells to reach. His big power spike comes at Bond Tiers III and IV, so commit your Glimpse there first. Read the full Tiel the Acolyte guide for the fastest way to build him.
Best for: Beginners, boss assassination, stealth-style players.
Avoid if: You want high HP or prefer aggressive stand-and-fight combat.
Location: Southeast of Widow’s Overlook Beacon, near Mushroom Village. No boss required.
Proxima the Broodseeker – A Tier

Proxima is the best early aggressive option and doubles as the game’s best gold farmer. Her active ability Biosampler fires a hook that either pulls an enemy to her or launches her to the enemy, followed by a lightning-infused hit that applies Shock. Her passive Grafted Armor gives her a 15% chance to reduce incoming melee and ranged damage by 50% and prevent stagger entirely.
After Balance Patch 1, she gained infinite Endeavor ammo and a wider Seizure radius, making her crowd control much stronger. Her Collector upgrade at Bond Tier 3 harvests Biosamples from enemies that you can sell to Merrick, making her the most reliable way to earn gold in the game. See our best sidearms guide for what to pair with her lightning-based kit.
She also gets a free map marker after the prologue. Her passive armor mitigation is chance-based and not reliable enough to call her a true tank, and she falls behind the S-tier Shells in single-target boss finishing power. But for a first Shell to invest in, she is one of the safest and most rewarding choices. Read the full Proxima the Broodseeker guide for the best passives to unlock first.
Best for: Early aggressive players, Shock/Lightning builds, gold farming.
Avoid if: You want reliable tanking or the absolute strongest boss-kill potential.
Location: Inside a Shattered Beacon dungeon northeast of Blackridge Pass Beacon. No boss required.
Eredrim the Venerable – A Tier

Eredrim is the best Shell for players who love parrying and breaking enemy posture. His active ability Shoulder Bash lunges forward dealing Break Damage. When fully upgraded, it can break most bosses in around two hits, opening them up for Ripostes. His Ethereal Diapason fires an AoE Break shockwave. His passive Executioner builds up to 100 Slaughterer stacks from Ripostes, which lower execute thresholds and add damage reduction via Tank.
The playstyle is extremely satisfying: Shoulder Bash to break posture, Riposte to deal massive damage, build Slaughterer stacks to become tankier, repeat. He has the second-highest HP in the game, which means even if you miss a parry you can absorb a few hits and keep going. Heavy weapons like the Obsidian Hammer and Iconoclast suit him well. See our how to parry guide if you want to sharpen your Riposte timing with him.
The day-one patch raised Shoulder Bash’s Resolve cost and weakened its Oppression upgrade, ending the back-to-back spam that made him overpowered in the beta. He is weaker against large groups than in one-on-one fights, and his Slaughterer stacks reset when you rest or get severed from your Shell. Read the full Eredrim the Venerable guide for the optimal build.
Best for: Parry-focused players, posture-break specialists, Frost and heavy weapon builds.
Avoid if: You hate managing Resolve or struggle with parry timing.
Location: Defeat The Warden miniboss in the Citadel of Penance arena in the Fainweald region.
Lazlo the Justiciar – A Tier

Lazlo has the highest base HP of any Shell in Mortal Shell 2. His active ability Retribution heats his armor and releases a Burn shockwave. Repeated use triggers Overheat, a larger blast that temporarily disables his armor for around seven to ten seconds. His passive Fortified Plate gives him a base 10% damage reduction while his armor is active. The Warmed Up and Furnace passives can stack this up to around 30%.
His playstyle revolves around building Heat to access max-Heat bonuses like increased damage, Resolve generation, and higher mitigation, then Overheating to clear groups of enemies, then retreating until armor comes back. He generates Resolve efficiently, which keeps his abilities flowing consistently. See our best Seals guide to find the right defensive Seal pairing for his tank playstyle.
His weakness is that in a game where posture-breaking beats raw HP, his big health pool matters less than it sounds at high-level boss fights. He also has a long, late unlock that limits how much of the game he can carry you through if you go for him early. His protection also drops during Overheat at the worst possible moment. Read the full Lazlo the Justiciar guide for the best Burn-focused build.
Best for: Tanky explorers, Burn AoE builds, players who want the biggest health bar.
Avoid if: You want strong boss performance or an early-game unlock.
Location: Past Lord Vellen in the Royal Crypt below the High Lord’s Courtyard Beacon in Mammon.
Sariel the Endless – B Tier

Sariel has the highest theoretical survivability ceiling in the game, but also the highest skill floor by far. His active ability Exodus of Thorns sends parasitic thorns hunting enemies, applying Curse at the cost of Pain to himself. His passive Purge means that with no Pain, 50% of all incoming damage becomes recoverable grey health that you restore by landing melee hits. At max Pain he dodges faster. Curse nullifies and reflects an enemy’s next melee attack and can be extended to 30 seconds and spread across multiple targets.
The loop is like a Bloodborne-style rally system. You convert damage into Pain, then fight aggressively to claw it back before getting hit again. When it works, you feel nearly untouchable. When it collapses, and it collapses fast against any multi-hit or fast enemy, you die almost instantly because your grey health vanishes the moment you take another hit.
He needs deep Bond investment before the loop becomes reliable, and he has the longest unlock in the game outside of Genessa. He is a genuinely rewarding Shell for experienced players who master the timing, but most players will have more success with any of the Shells above him. Read the full Sariel the Endless guide for the best way to build the Pain loop.
Best for: Advanced players who love high-risk mechanics and Curse synergies.
Avoid if: You are a beginner or want consistent performance across all content.
Location: Inside the Chamber of Becoming, southeast of The Silent Steps Beacon. You must break all reviving stone tablets in a two-stage fight.

Best Shells for Beginners in Mortal Shell 2
If you are just starting Mortal Shell 2, here are the three Shells to prioritize.
Tiel the Acolyte is the top pick for almost every beginner. He is free to find after the prologue, his invisibility gives you a safety net for learning boss patterns, and his stealth-crit build becomes one of the strongest setups in the game at Bond Tier III and IV. Pair him with our best Tarstones for beginners guide to build him fast.
Proxima the Broodseeker is the second free marker. Her passive Grafted Armor randomly negates hits, which helps forgive positioning mistakes while you learn. She is also the best early source of gold.
Eredrim the Venerable is the best pick if you like a more direct fighting style. His second-highest HP lets you eat hits and learn patterns, and his posture-break system gives you clear feedback on what to do in boss fights.
Whatever you choose, read our Mortal Shell 2 beginner’s guide before spending your first Glimpse, and check our best Shells for beginners breakdown for a deeper look at early-game Shell choices.
Tips for Spending Glimpse on Shells
- You can only fully bond around two to three Shells per playthrough. Do not spread Glimpse thin.
- Test a Shell’s core active ability before committing Glimpse. Bond upgrades amplify what is already there. They will not make a playstyle you dislike feel good.
- Save at least some Glimpse for New Game Plus. Higher Bond tiers unlock in NG+ and let you finish bonding secondary Shells. See our New Game Plus guide for what carries over.
- Skip paid map markers. After Balance Patch 1 they cost Gloom, not Glimpse, but the Gloom is still better spent elsewhere. Explore or use our Shell locations guide instead.
- Once you reach around 22 to 24 Shell Points, most Shells equalize in power. At that point, pick for the playstyle you enjoy, not for tier placement.
- All Shells are viable at full investment. The tier list is about efficiency and how fast each Shell becomes strong, not about which ones are broken and which are useless.
Make sure you also understand how to fast travel so you can get to each Shell’s location quickly, and learn how to parry since Ripostes are important for several top-tier Shells.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Shell in Mortal Shell 2?
Smert the Apostate is widely considered the most overpowered Shell for boss killing thanks to his chain-Miracle time-stop loop. Genessa the Wayward has the highest damage ceiling and is the best all-around pick for players who want both power and fun. Gragu the Insatiable is the best for exploration and sustained combat. All three sit in S tier in most community rankings.
Which Shell should I pick first in Mortal Shell 2?
Tiel the Acolyte is the best first Shell for most players. He is free after the prologue, his invisibility gives beginners a strong safety net, and he scales into a powerful boss killer at Bond Tiers III and IV. Proxima the Broodseeker is the other free early marker and is also a great starter option.
Can you switch Shells freely in Mortal Shell 2?
Yes. You can switch Shells for free at any Beacon or by visiting Zhirelle the Shellkeeper in Marrow Keep. Shell Points can be respecced freely. Only Glimpse, spent to raise Bond Tiers, is permanent and non-refundable.
How many Shells can you fully bond in one playthrough?
You can fully bond around two to three Shells in a single playthrough. Glimpse is scarce, so focus on your main Shell first. Progress carries into New Game Plus, where you can continue bonding the rest. See the New Game Plus guide for what to prioritize in your second run.
Bottom Line
Mortal Shell 2 has eight genuinely interesting Shells and none of them are bad at full investment. But if you want the fastest path through the hardest content, start with Tiel for his free unlock and beginner-friendly invisibility, move your Glimpse into him first, and switch to Smert or Genessa if you hit a wall on a boss. Gragu is the pick if exploration and farming matter more to you than boss speed. The Shells you enjoy playing will always outperform the ones you tolerate on paper, so use this list as a starting point and adjust once you feel the rhythm of each body you inhabit.
