Mortal Shell 2 Eredrim the Venerable Guide – Location, Abilities, Skills and Best Build

Mortal Shell 2 Eredrim the Venerable guide covers his Citadel of Penance location in Fainweald, two entry routes, The Warden boss fight, full skill tree, and best build.

TL;DR:

  • Eredrim the Venerable is a returning Shell from the original Mortal Shell and one of three featured in the Mortal Shell 2 announcement trailer.
  • He is found inside the Citadel of Penance in the northwestern part of Fainweald, locked behind The Warden miniboss fight.
  • There are two ways to enter the Citadel – the standard route via the Citadel Gate Lever, or a fast secret teleport found near the One-Legged Wolf Tavern ruins.
  • His kit revolves around Break Damage – Shoulder Bash staggers single targets, Ethereal Diapason hits groups with a shockwave, and Executioner rewards Riposte kills with Slaughterer stacks.
  • Slaughterer stacks reduce the damage Eredrim takes, making him naturally tankier the more aggressively he plays.
  • The best build pairs The Iconoclast with the Forgotten Crossbow and prioritizes the Shoulder Bash → Perfect Guard → Riposte loop. As of the Week 1 Patch, Shoulder Bash no longer permanently stows your primary weapon after use — the loop now works cleanly.
  • Ripostes are triggered by a light attack on the red dot — heavy attacks no longer work for this since the Day One Patch. The Week 1 Patch also made Riposte damage scale with enemy health, improving Eredrim’s loop in late game and Night Mode.
  • He has 12 skills across 4 Bond Tiers, and his Persistence skill at Tier 4 lets him keep Slaughterer stacks even after resting.

Mortal Shell 2 Eredrim the Venerable is the third Shell most players will unlock in Fainweald, and he plays completely differently from Tiel and Proxima. Where they reward speed and mobility, Eredrim rewards aggression and pressure. He charges in, breaks enemy posture with Shoulder Bash, punishes openings with Ripostes, and gets progressively harder to kill as the fight goes on thanks to stacking damage reduction from Executioner.

He is the best Shell for players who dislike dodging constantly and want to feel like a knight tanking through a battle. But getting him takes a bit more work than the first two Fainweald Shells. You need to reach the Citadel of Penance and defeat The Warden boss inside. This guide covers both routes into the Citadel, the boss fight itself, Eredrim’s full kit, and how to build him from mid-game into endgame. If you want to see how he compares to earlier Shells, our Mortal Shell 2 Proxima the Broodseeker guide and Tiel the Acolyte guide are good reads alongside this one.

Where to Find Eredrim the Venerable

Eredrim is inside the Citadel of Penance, a heavily fortified fortress in the northwestern part of Fainweald. His body sits in the central battle arena. The arena floor collapses into a fighting pit when you ride the elevator in the middle, and Eredrim’s remains are in the pit after the boss is defeated.

Unlike Tiel and Proxima, his location is not automatically marked on your map. You can pay Glimpses to the Shellkeeper to reveal it — Glimpses are no longer a finite resource after the Week 1 Patch, so spending them on map reveals now carries no long-term cost. Alternatively, this guide gives you everything you need to find him without spending any.

How to Enter the Citadel of Penance – Two Routes

The Citadel’s main gate is locked by default. There are two ways in:

Route 1 – Citadel Gate Lever (Standard Route)

  1. From the Widow’s Overlook Beacon, progress northwest through Fainweald into the Gloomshade Grove area.
  2. Find and defeat the Bloodcursed Lithopod boss in the area.
  3. Killing it drops the Citadel Gate Lever.
  4. Take the lever to the Citadel of Penance’s main gate and use it to open the entrance.
  5. Head into the fortress, work toward the central area, and ride one of the two elevators upward.
  6. The floor in the middle collapses and drops you into the arena below. The Warden will appear.

Route 2 – Secret Teleport Sack (Fast Route)

This is the faster method and lets you skip the Bloodcursed Lithopod fight entirely.

  1. From the One-Legged Wolf Tavern in eastern Fainweald, head north to the abandoned ruins area.
  2. Look for a strange sack on the ground in those ruins.
  3. Interacting with it teleports you directly inside the Citadel of Penance, next to one of the cells beside the central elevator.
  4. From there, ride the elevator up to trigger the arena collapse and The Warden fight.

The teleport sack skips all the outdoor approach and puts you directly next to the boss. You can still activate the Beacon just before The Warden if you want a safe respawn point. To make sure you haven’t missed any Beacons on the way over, check our all Beacon locations in Mortal Shell 2 guide.

How to Defeat The Warden – Boss Fight Tips

The Warden is a miniboss that drops from above into the fighting pit. It is a large, heavily armored enemy and most of its attacks are unblockable. Blocking is not your best option here – you need to dodge everything and attack from safe windows.

Key tips for The Warden fight:

  • Switch to Tiel before this fight if you have him. Tiel’s Shadow Dash passive makes you briefly invisible on a perfect dodge and inflicts Stagger on The Warden, which gives you a free punish window. His Shadow Strike from behind lands massive damage.
  • Dodge every attack. Almost nothing from The Warden can be blocked. Learn its wind-up animations and commit to dodging sideways rather than rolling backward.
  • Attack from behind after dodges. The Warden is slow to turn. After you dodge a big swing, move to its back and land your combos before it resets.
  • Don’t get greedy. This arena has no escape room. If you land one hit and the next attack is coming, back off and reset rather than going for a second swing.

Once The Warden is down, interact with Eredrim’s body in the arena floor. Complete his Memory sequence to permanently unlock him.

Who Is Eredrim the Venerable?

Eredrim the Venerable is a returning Shell from the first Mortal Shell, where he was the high-health, slow-stamina tanking option. In Mortal Shell 2, he returns as a heavily armored knight-like warrior built around Break Damage and posture-breaking combat. Cold Symmetry featured him alongside Tiel and Proxima in the original announcement trailer, confirming his importance to the game’s design identity.

His motto: “Peace has a price.”

In combat, Eredrim plays like a relentless brawler. He deals heavy Break Damage with every ability, breaking enemy posture quickly to set up Ripostes. Every successful Riposte builds Slaughterer stacks, which in turn reduce the damage he takes. The longer a fight goes on, the harder he becomes to kill. He is also one of the best Shells for learning the Parry system because Parry → Riposte is the core of his loop, and he has skills specifically designed to reward good parry timing. The Week 1 Patch overhauled Ripostes significantly — damage now scales with enemy health, iFrames last the full animation, and recovery is faster — making Eredrim’s core loop even more rewarding than it was at launch. Our how to parry in Mortal Shell 2 guide is worth reading before you go deep into his skill tree.

Eredrim the Venerable – Abilities

Eredrim has two active abilities and one passive. This makes him unique among the early Fainweald Shells, who each have only one active and one passive.

Active 1 – Shoulder Bash

Eredrim charges forward and slams into an enemy with his shoulder, dealing health damage, Stagger Damage, and Break Damage in a single hit. This is his primary offensive tool and his most important ability. It closes distance, interrupts enemy attacks, and rapidly builds the target’s Break gauge. When the Break gauge fills, the enemy is vulnerable to a Riposte for massive bonus damage — triggered with a light attack on the red dot (heavy attacks no longer work for this since the Day One Patch).

The charge can be held to increase damage. Releasing it at the right time determines how much Stagger you apply. This ability scales enormously with skill investment – by the time Oppression at Tier 4 is maxed, Shoulder Bash releases a frontal shockwave that inflicts Trauma stacks on top of all its normal effects. The Week 1 Patch fixed a bug where Shoulder Bash permanently stowed your primary weapon after use — it now returns your weapon correctly, so the ability can be used freely without interrupting your melee combos.

Active 2 – Ethereal Diapason

Eredrim smashes his Diapason weapon into the ground to create a blinding shockwave that deals Break Damage to all enemies in range. Unlike Shoulder Bash, which is a single-target tool, Ethereal Diapason is your crowd control option. It hits everything around you, staggers groups, and with the Radiance skill becomes large enough to catch enemies far outside normal melee range.

The blinding effect also reduces accuracy and awareness of enemies caught in the blast, giving you a breathing window against tight groups of enemies.

Passive – Executioner

Eredrim executes enemies at low health and gains Slaughterer stacks when performing a Riposte. Stacks are lost when resting or being severed from the Shell – unless you invest in the Persistence skill, which lets him retain a portion of them.

Slaughterer stacks are the foundation of Eredrim’s survivability. By themselves, they let him execute weakened enemies more efficiently. Combined with the Tank skill at Tier 2, each stack also provides a small percentage of damage reduction. In a long boss fight where you land many Ripostes, this can stack into a significant damage reduction that makes Eredrim feel nearly indestructible.

Eredrim the Venerable – Full Skill Tree

Eredrim has 12 skills across 4 Bond Tiers. Deepen your Bond with him by spending Glimpses with Zhirelle at Marrow Keep — Glimpses are no longer a finite resource after the Week 1 Patch, so you can invest in Eredrim’s full tree without sacrificing other Shells. Shell Points from leveling up are then spent on individual skills. If you later want to reset Eredrim’s Bond and recover your Glimpses, use Mether’s Severance — a new item added in the Week 1 Patch, purchasable from Merrick. For help earning Gloom and Shell Points faster, see our guide on how to farm Gloom fast in Mortal Shell 2.

Tier 1 Skills

Alacrity (3 levels) – Reduces Resolve costs and speeds up Shoulder Bash.

  • Level 1: Shoulder Bash charges 20% faster
  • Level 2: Shoulder Bash costs 20% less Resolve
  • Level 3: After killing an enemy with a Riposte, all abilities cost no Resolve for 8 seconds

Massacre (3 levels) – Improves how many Slaughterer stacks a Riposte generates.

  • Level 1: A Riposte grants 2 Slaughterer stacks
  • Level 2: A Riposte grants 3 Slaughterer stacks
  • Level 3: Killing an enemy with a Riposte grants 10 Slaughterer stacks

Apathy (3 levels) – Improves Eredrim’s resistance to Frost and his damage against Frozen enemies.

  • Level 1: +50% Frost mitigation
  • Level 2: Full Frost immunity
  • Level 3: Eredrim deals 20% bonus damage to Frozen enemies

Tier 2 Skills

Anguish (3 levels) – Directly upgrades Shoulder Bash damage and debuffs.

  • Level 1: Shoulder Bash deals 150% damage
  • Level 2: Shoulder Bash inflicts 10 Weak stacks on the target
  • Level 3: Shoulder Bash deals massive Stagger Damage

Tank (3 levels) – Each Slaughterer stack now also reduces incoming damage.

  • Level 1: 0.15% damage reduction per Slaughterer stack
  • Level 2: 0.18% damage reduction per stack
  • Level 3: 0.2% damage reduction per stack

Consecration (3 levels) – Using Mether’s Pulse restores Resolve.

  • Level 1: Restores 15 Resolve on Mether’s Pulse use
  • Level 2: Restores 15 Resolve on use
  • Level 3: 40% chance to fully restore Resolve on Mether’s Pulse use

Tier 3 Skills

Radiance (4 levels) – Upgrades Ethereal Diapason damage, range, and adds new effects.

  • Level 1: Diapason deals 30 damage and 50 Break Damage in range
  • Level 2: Deals 50 damage and 60 Break Damage
  • Level 3: Also inflicts 10 Fragile stacks to all enemies in range
  • Level 4: Diapason has 200% the normal radius

Carnage (3 levels) – Executed enemies explode in a bloody burst that damages nearby enemies.

  • Level 1: Executed enemies burst for 50 splash damage
  • Level 2: 70 splash damage
  • Level 3: 100 splash damage

Resonance (3 levels) – Enemies broken by Ethereal Diapason are now also inflicted with Stasis.

  • Level 1: 5 Stasis stacks lasting 6 seconds
  • Level 2: 10 Stasis stacks lasting 8 seconds
  • Level 3: 18 Stasis stacks lasting 10 seconds

Tier 4 Skills

Oppression (3 levels) – The endgame Shoulder Bash upgrade. Adds shockwave and Trauma at max level.

  • Level 1: Shoulder Bash deals 110% Break Damage
  • Level 2: Shoulder Bash deals 120% Break Damage
  • Level 3: Shoulder Bash releases a frontal shockwave inflicting 10 Trauma stacks (costs 20 more Resolve)

Persistence (4 levels) – Reduces how many Slaughterer stacks are lost when resting or being severed.

  • Level 1: Only 50% of stacks lost when resting
  • Level 2: Only 50% of stacks lost when severed from Shell
  • Level 3: Only 25% of stacks lost when resting
  • Level 4: Only 25% of stacks lost when severed

Seal Affinity (4 levels) – Extends Parry windows and boosts Riposte damage.

  • Level 1: Parry window is slightly longer
  • Level 2: Riposte deals +20% damage
  • Level 3: Riposte deals +35% damage
  • Level 4: Parry window is moderately longer

Seal Affinity is the standout Tier 4 skill for most Eredrim builds. Riposte damage at +35% combined with Massacre’s 10 Slaughterer stacks per kill turns every successful parry into a damage spike plus a survivability boost at the same moment. This value is further amplified by the Week 1 Patch, which made Riposte damage scale with enemy health — meaning your Seal Affinity-boosted Ripostes hit proportionally harder against tougher late-game targets.

Best Build for Eredrim the Venerable

Eredrim’s best build turns him into a frontline fighter who systematically breaks enemy posture with Shoulder Bash, punishes openings with Ripostes, and becomes progressively harder to kill as Slaughterer stacks accumulate. Everything in the build supports that loop.

Best Weapons for Eredrim

Primary Weapon: The Iconoclast

The Iconoclast is the recommended primary weapon for Eredrim. It hits hard, has excellent reach, and its moveset pairs naturally with Shoulder Bash and Ethereal Diapason. The reach keeps you on top of enemies after a stagger without needing to close the gap again. It also pairs well with Tarstones that boost Break Damage and Riposte damage, keeping your output high at every stage of a fight. For a broader overview of weapon choices, see our all weapon and sidearm locations guide.

Sidearm: Forgotten Crossbow

The Forgotten Crossbow handles situations where you cannot immediately close into melee – it lets you apply Stagger pressure on approaching enemies from range before switching to melee, and it softens Break gauges before you commit. Against tighter enemy groups, using it to tag an enemy before stepping in with Shoulder Bash reduces the time it takes to break posture significantly.

Best Tarstones for Eredrim

  • Retribution Stone – Increases Riposte damage. This is your core damage-per-Riposte amplifier and works together with Seal Affinity’s +35% Riposte bonus for massive burst on every parry.
  • Stillblade’s Stone – Adds additional Break Damage to your weapon attacks. Every hit deals more to the enemy’s Break gauge, meaning Shoulder Bash breaks posture faster.
  • Auspicious Stone – Increases melee Critical Hit chance. Useful for Iconoclast’s normal attack strings between Shoulder Bash uses.
  • Bulwark Stone – Grants damage reduction after defeating an enemy. Stacks with Tank’s Slaughterer-based damage reduction for compounding survivability in group fights. The Bulwark Stone received a significant damage reduction increase in Balance Patch 1, making it stronger than it was at launch and an even better fit for Eredrim’s tanking playstyle.
  • Berserker’s Stone – Increases melee damage when health is low. Plays into Eredrim’s naturally low health threshold style and rewards staying in the fight rather than retreating.

Best Skills to Prioritize

Invest in this order to get the core Eredrim loop online as fast as possible:

  1. Alacrity (Level 1–2) – Faster Shoulder Bash charge and lower Resolve cost. Unlocks the loop immediately.
  2. Massacre (Level 1–3) – More Slaughterer stacks per Riposte. This is the fuel for Tank’s damage reduction and Persistence’s stack retention.
  3. Anguish (Level 1–3) – Boosts Shoulder Bash damage, adds Weak stacks, and makes it deal massive Stagger. Core upgrade.
  4. Tank (Level 1–3) – Turns Slaughterer stacks into damage reduction. Once you have both Tank and Massacre running, Eredrim becomes noticeably harder to kill.
  5. Seal Affinity (Level 1–4) – Longer Parry windows and +35% Riposte damage. This is what rewards actually learning the Parry mechanic well. Its value is higher after the Week 1 Patch given that Riposte damage now scales with enemy health.
  6. Oppression (Level 1–3) – Pushes Shoulder Bash to 120% Break Damage and adds a Trauma shockwave at max level. Save for mid-game when you have the Resolve economy to afford the extra cost.

Combat Loop

  1. Open with Shoulder Bash to charge into the enemy, deal Break Damage, and apply Weak stacks. Since the Week 1 Patch, Shoulder Bash correctly returns your primary weapon after use — follow it up immediately with melee attacks.
  2. Follow up with Iconoclast light attacks to continue pressuring the Break gauge between Shoulder Bash cooldowns.
  3. When the enemy attacks, execute a Perfect Guard (Parry) to trigger the Riposte window.
  4. Land the Riposte with a light attack on the red dot for high burst damage and 10 Slaughterer stacks (with Massacre maxed). Remember: heavy attacks no longer trigger the Riposte since the Day One Patch.
  5. Stacks feed into Tank’s damage reduction – you are now harder to kill.
  6. Use Ethereal Diapason when multiple enemies are in range, or to break the posture of a tough enemy who is resisting Shoulder Bash alone.
  7. Repeat the Shoulder Bash → Riposte loop until the fight ends. Each successful cycle makes Eredrim more durable.

Tips for Playing Eredrim the Venerable

  • Learn Parry timing. Eredrim’s entire power scaling runs through Ripostes. If you avoid parrying and just spam attacks, you miss the most important part of his kit. The Seal Affinity skill at Tier 4 gives you a wider Parry window – unlock it and practice on regular enemies before taking on bosses. Ripostes now scale with enemy health after the Week 1 Patch, so a clean parry against a tough boss pays off much more than it did at launch.
  • Use Shoulder Bash as often as Resolve allows. It is not just damage – it applies Weak stacks and builds the Break gauge faster than any normal attack combo. Alacrity Level 3 can make it cost zero Resolve after a Riposte kill, which lets you chain it freely during big fights. After the Week 1 Patch, the ability no longer stows your primary weapon permanently, so using it mid-combo no longer disrupts your attack flow.
  • Don’t waste Slaughterer stacks. Every time you rest at a Beacon, you lose them by default. Plan your Beacon rests carefully, and unlock Persistence as soon as Tier 4 is available so you retain half of them even on rest.
  • Ethereal Diapason is for groups. Do not waste it on a single enemy when Shoulder Bash is available. Save it for moments when 3 or more enemies close in at once. With Radiance at max level and 200% radius, one Diapason hit can stagger an entire pack.
  • The Untarnished Seal pairs well with this build. It rewards timed blocks with Break Damage output, which layers on top of Eredrim’s already high Break Damage from Shoulder Bash and Anguish. See our best Seals in Mortal Shell 2 guide for the full breakdown.
  • Swap to Eredrim for difficult bosses. Even if you normally run a different Shell, Eredrim’s survivability and Break Damage make him one of the strongest Shells to use against boss encounters that punish dodge-heavy playstyles. You can switch at any Beacon without penalty. If you invest Glimpses in him and later change your mind, Mether’s Severance — added in the Week 1 Patch and purchasable from Merrick — lets you reset his Shell and recover all spent Glimpses.

Is Eredrim the Best Shell in Mortal Shell 2?

Eredrim is consistently rated as the best mid-to-late game Shell for players who want to tank and punish. He is forgiving against mistakes because his damage reduction scales naturally as the fight continues, meaning a rough start does not end the encounter the way it might with a lower-health Shell like Tiel.

He is especially strong against the game’s tougher single bosses, where his Break Damage loop can reliably stagger enemies and set up a Riposte every 10 to 15 seconds. The Week 1 Patch improvements to the Riposte system make him stronger than ever in these situations — health-scaling Riposte damage means Seal Affinity’s +35% bonus hits harder proportionally against bosses than it did at launch. Our Mortal Shell 2 all boss list shows which bosses are best approached with a Break-heavy Shell like Eredrim. For full playthrough planning, our New Game Plus guide explains how Eredrim scales into NG+ content and what carries over between runs.

The main trade-off is that he requires you to invest in the Parry mechanic. Players who rely purely on dodging will not get the most out of him. But once the Parry → Riposte → Slaughterer loop clicks, Eredrim becomes one of the most satisfying and powerful Shells in the game.

FAQs – Mortal Shell 2 Eredrim the Venerable

Where is Eredrim the Venerable in Mortal Shell 2?

Eredrim is found inside the Citadel of Penance in the northwestern part of Fainweald. His body is in the central battle arena underground. To reach it, either defeat the Bloodcursed Lithopod to get the Citadel Gate Lever and open the main entrance, or use the fast teleport by interacting with a strange sack in the abandoned ruins north of the One-Legged Wolf Tavern.

Do you need to fight a boss to get Eredrim in Mortal Shell 2?

Yes. You need to defeat The Warden, a miniboss that drops into the arena when you ride the central elevator inside the Citadel of Penance. Most of The Warden’s attacks are unblockable, so dodge everything and attack from behind. Switching to Tiel for this fight makes it significantly easier thanks to Shadow Dash’s dodge-based invisibility and Stagger bonus.

What does Shoulder Bash do in Mortal Shell 2?

Shoulder Bash is Eredrim’s primary active ability. He charges forward and slams into an enemy with his shoulder, dealing health damage, Stagger Damage, and Break Damage in a single hit. It is the fastest way to fill an enemy’s Break gauge and set up a Riposte — triggered with a light attack on the red dot, not a heavy attack (this changed in the Day One Patch). The Week 1 Patch also fixed a bug where Shoulder Bash permanently stowed your primary weapon after use — it now correctly returns your weapon, so you can chain it into melee attacks freely. With the Anguish skill, it also applies Weak stacks to debuff the target, and at Oppression max level it releases a frontal shockwave that adds Trauma stacks.

What are Slaughterer stacks in Mortal Shell 2?

Slaughterer stacks are built by performing Ripostes with Eredrim. By default they allow him to execute low-health enemies more easily. With the Tank skill unlocked, each stack also provides a small percentage of damage reduction. With Massacre maxed, a single Riposte kill grants 10 stacks instantly. With Persistence, you retain up to 75% of stacks even after resting at a Beacon, keeping your damage reduction between sessions. The Week 1 Patch improved Ripostes so damage now scales with enemy health — each stack generated by a Riposte in a tough fight is earned against a harder target, making Slaughterer an even more meaningful resource in late-game encounters.
