TL;DR:
- Smert the Apostate is the fourth Fainweald Shell and the most mechanically unique in the entire game.
- He is found at Prophet’s Rest in the western swamplands of Fainweald, near the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon.
- Unlocking him requires a blood ritual – you must fill three stone circles with blood by killing enemies inside them. Each offering ejects you from your Shell.
- His Miracle ability halts time, shifts him into an unarmed Fight Stance, and lets him stack Chaos on enemies that detonates when time resumes.
- Miracle costs half his current health to activate. Overtime extends the window but costs additional health.
- His passive Deadly Revelation grants Faith at low health, boosting Resolve regeneration from melee hits.
- Last Vow at Tier 3 permanently locks him into Fight Stance – no weapon needed, making him a full unarmed brawler.
- He has 12 skills across 4 Bond Tiers and 7 memories. Unlocking all memories costs 3,500 Gloom and pays back exactly 3,500.
Mortal Shell 2 Smert the Apostate is unlike any other Shell in the game. Every other Shell in Fainweald has a straightforward damage or survival mechanic. Smert gambles with his own health to stop time, pummel enemies with his bare fists, and detonate massive Chaos damage when the clock restarts. It is the highest-risk, highest-reward kit in the whole roster – and it is also one of the most enjoyable to master.
He is consistently rated S-tier by the community for his damage ceiling and uniqueness. But he is also one of the later Fainweald unlocks and needs more planning than simply walking to a grave. This guide covers his exact location, how the blood ritual works step by step, his full ability kit, every skill in his tree, and how to build him for both your first playthrough and endgame. If you are building out your full Shell roster, our Eredrim the Venerable guide covers the previous Fainweald Shell, and our all Shell locations guide shows the complete picture across Fainweald and Mammon.
Where to Find Smert the Apostate
Smert is located in Prophet’s Rest, a sub-location in the western swamplands of Fainweald called the Outskirts of Nochte. The closest Beacon is the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon.
Unlike the first two Fainweald Shells, Smert’s location is not automatically marked on your map. You need to reach this area yourself. Make sure you have your map fragments collected before exploring the fog-heavy western Fainweald – our guide on how to get a map in Mortal Shell 2 will help.
Step-by-step directions:
- Fast travel to the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon in western Fainweald.
- From the Beacon, turn left toward the rock bridge you can see ahead.
- Follow the path going upward from the bridge into Prophet’s Rest.
- You will enter an open ritual area with cultist enemies scattered around and three stone circles on the ground.
- Smert’s body is at the back of the area near a statue, glowing once the ritual is completed.
How to Unlock Smert – The Blood Ritual
Smert’s unlock is different from every other Shell. You cannot simply interact with his body. You must first complete a blood ritual by killing enemies inside three stone circles to fill them with blood. Only then does his body become claimable.
How the ritual works:
- Approach one of the smaller stone circles on the ground and interact with it to make a Blood Offering.
- The offering immediately ejects you from your Shell. You are now in your vulnerable Harbinger form.
- Defeat nearby enemies to build up enough force to re-enter your Shell. The cultists in the area respawn, so you will always have targets.
- Once back in your Shell, approach the second circle and repeat the offering.
- Do this for all three circles. Each one ejects you from your Shell.
- Once all three circles glow red with blood, Smert’s body lights up at the back near the statue.
- Interact with his body to trigger The Convert memory sequence and permanently unlock him.
Critical warning: Never interact with a circle while you are already ejected from your Shell. If you die in Harbinger form before re-entering your Shell, you lose progress and respawn at the last Beacon. Always reclaim your Shell between each offering. Kill the cultists standing nearest to you first before worrying about anything else.
Activating the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon before starting the ritual gives you a close respawn point. Check our all Beacon locations guide to make sure you haven’t missed any nearby fast travel points in this area.
Smert as a Summon
Smert can also be found as a summonable NPC in Sunken Village, separate from unlocking him as a playable Shell. To reach him there, head right from the Sunken Village entrance, cross the bridge to the sheep field, break the boxes blocking a set of double doors, go through them, cross the next bridge, drop down the cliff, and pass through the wooden archway with torches. He waits on the other side of the tunnel. Summoning him as an NPC during a boss fight is useful even before you complete the blood ritual.
Who Is Smert the Apostate?
Smert is a brand-new Shell in Mortal Shell 2, not a returning character from the first game. His lore title “the Apostate” suggests a warrior who abandoned his faith or allegiances, and his kit reflects that – he fights outside the rules of normal combat, stopping time itself to deal damage no other Shell can replicate.
His motto: “Truth is the final revelation before death.”
In combat, Smert is defined by two states. Normal combat, where he plays like any other aggressive melee Shell with a twist – staying below certain health thresholds powers up his passive. And Miracle mode, where time stops, he drops his weapon entirely, and he goes to work with bare fists to stack Chaos stacks that explode when time resumes. The burst damage from a fully loaded Chaos detonation is among the highest single hits in the game.
He is high-risk by design. Miracle costs half his current health to activate. Extending it into Overtime costs more health on top. This means you need to manage your health carefully or learn to play effectively at low health thresholds where his passive kicks in. Smert rewards players who are comfortable living dangerously.
Smert the Apostate – Abilities
Active – Miracle
Smert sacrifices half of his current health to halt time and enter Fight Stance. While time is stopped, his unarmed attacks inflict Chaos stacks on every hit. When the Miracle duration ends and time resumes, all accumulated Chaos stacks detonate simultaneously for a massive burst of damage.
Miracle can be pushed into Overtime by sacrificing additional health, extending the frozen window to land more Chaos stacks before the detonation. The more stacks you build before time resumes, the bigger the explosion.
A key nuance: always activate Miracle at high health so the 50% cost still leaves a usable buffer. Activating it when you are already at 30% health means you are left at 15% after entering the window, which puts you in extreme danger if the detonation does not end the fight. Plan when you use it, especially against bosses.
Passive – Deadly Revelation
At 10% health or lower, Smert gains Faith. While Faith is active, landing melee hits generates additional Resolve on top of the normal amount. This fuels more frequent use of Miracle in long fights where you survive at low health.
Chaos also inflicts a random status effect on detonation while Faith is active. This is what makes Smert genuinely unpredictable and dangerous in boss fights – even without controlling the exact status, the randomness tends to land useful debuffs at the worst possible moments for the enemy.
Smert the Apostate – Full Skill Tree
Smert has 12 skills across 4 Bond Tiers. Deepen his Bond by spending Glimpses with Zhirelle the Shellkeeper at Marrow Keep to unlock memories and the next skill row. Shell Points from leveling up are spent on individual skills. To maximize his potential fast, see our fast Gloom farming guide for efficient leveling.
Tier 1 Skills
Novertime (4 levels) – Extends how long Miracle lasts before entering Overtime, and reduces Overtime damage taken.

- Level 2: Smert takes 20% less damage while in Overtime
- Level 3: Miracle lasts 5 seconds longer before Overtime
- Level 4: Smert takes 5 seconds less damage in Overtime
Devotion (3 levels) – Strengthens Faith’s Resolve regeneration bonus.
- Level 1: Faith regenerates 120% the Resolve from melee hits
- Level 2: Faith regenerates 130% the Resolve
- Level 3: While Faithful, any Resolve gain has a 20% chance to fill Resolve completely
Absolution (4 levels) – Gives Smert resistance to negative status conditions and clears them on Miracle activation.
- Level 1: 15% mitigation against Poison, Burn, Lightning, and Frost
- Level 2: Mitigation of negative conditions increased by 40% while Faithful
- Level 3: Mitigating a negative condition restores 5 Health
- Level 4: Activating Miracle instantly cures all negative conditions on Smert
Tier 2 Skills
Striker (3 levels) – Increases how many Chaos stacks each fist hit applies during Miracle.
- Level 1: Fists inflict +1 Chaos stack per hit
- Level 2: Fists inflict +2 Chaos stacks per hit
- Level 3: Each detonated Chaos stack deals +3 damage
Fervor (3 levels) – Raises the health threshold at which Smert gains Faith from Deadly Revelation.
- Level 1: Faith activates at 20% or lower health
- Level 2: Faith activates at 25% or lower health
- Level 3: Faith activates at 35% or lower health
Resilience (3 levels) – Gives Smert a chance to survive fatal blows at low health, healing instead of dying.

- Level 3: Kicking an enemy has 15% chance to double their Chaos stacks before detonation
Tenacity (3 levels) – Reduces the Resolve cost of activating Miracle while Faithful.
- Level 1: Miracle costs 10% less Resolve while Faithful
- Level 2: Miracle costs 20% less Resolve while Faithful
- Level 3: Miracle costs 30% less Resolve while Faithful
Last Vow (4 levels) – The defining skill for Smert. Permanently locks him into Fight Stance. He can no longer use a melee weapon but his unarmed attacks become powerful in their own right.
- Level 1: Fight Stance attacks deal 20 damage and 15 Stagger Damage
- Level 2: Fight Stance attacks have 15% chance to restore 5 Health
- Level 3: Fight Stance attacks have +12% Critical Hit chance
- Level 4: Fight Stance attacks have 15% chance to deal massive Stagger Damage
Last Vow is what separates a casual Smert build from a fully committed one. Once you unlock it, Smert becomes a permanent fist fighter. His light attacks become punch combos and his heavy attacks become kicks (with Kicker). This is the highest-damage version of Smert but it requires committing fully to the unarmed playstyle.
Tier 4 Skills
Beatdown (3 levels) – Adds a Ground Punch ability during Fight Stance that hits all nearby enemies with Chaos and instantly resumes time.
- Level 1: Ground Punch deals 5 Chaos stacks to all enemies in range and resumes time

- Level 3: Ground Punch covers 150% the normal radius
Blessing (3 levels) – Any healing Smert receives while Faithful deals splash damage to nearby enemies.
- Level 1: Healing deals 10 splash damage around Smert
- Level 2: Healing deals 15 splash damage
- Level 3: Healing deals 20 splash damage
Limitless (3 levels) – Gives Miracle a chance to extend its own duration as you stack more Chaos during the window.
- Level 1: For every 32 Chaos stacks inflicted, 5% chance to extend Miracle by 3 seconds
- Level 2: For every 28 Chaos stacks, 10% chance to extend by 3 seconds
- Level 3: For every 25 Chaos stacks, 15% chance to extend by 3 seconds
Smert’s Memories
Smert has 7 memories – the same as Tiel. Unlocking all of them costs 3,500 Gloom total and pays back exactly 3,500 Gloom in return, making the investment cost-neutral on currency. Each memory unlocks the next Bond Tier and its associated skills.
- The Convert – 500 Glimpse → 500 Gloom (initial memory, triggers on Shell unlock)
- The Convert 2 – 500 Glimpse → 500 Gloom
- The Atonement – 500 Glimpse → 500 Gloom
- The Confession – 500 Glimpse → 500 Gloom
- The Communion – 500 Glimpse → 500 Gloom
- The Redemption – 500 Glimpse → 500 Gloom
- The Vision 1 – 500 Glimpse → 500 Gloom
Best Build for Smert the Apostate
The strongest Smert build is the Chaos Unarmed build, built around Last Vow and the Miracle detonation loop. The goal is to get into Miracle as often as possible, stack as many Chaos hits as the window allows, and detonate them for maximum burst damage. A sidearm like the Caged Hystrix is useful for exploration and certain environmental interactions, while the Axe and Dagger handles normal combat before you have Resolve to spare on Miracle.
Weapons
Primary Weapon (pre-Last Vow): Use the Axe and Dagger for fast light combos that rebuild Resolve between Miracle uses. Once Last Vow is unlocked at Tier 3, you no longer use a primary weapon in Fight Stance at all – your fists take over. For a look at the Axe and Dagger’s location, check our how to get the Axe and Dagger guide.
Sidearm: The Caged Hystrix is the recommended sidearm for Smert. It applies Poison stacks from range, which combines well with Absolution’s poison mitigation making Smert immune to his own cloud. It is also useful for environmental interactions with blue immortal flames throughout the world.
Best Tarstones for Smert
- Auspicious Stone – Increases melee Critical Hit chance. Feeds into Last Vow’s +12% Critical chance on Fight Stance attacks for compounding crit output.
- Headsman’s Stone – Increases Critical Hit damage. Essential for making crits from Last Vow and Kicker hit as hard as possible.
- Arbiter’s Prize – Applies Bloodcurse to attacks. Useful during the normal melee phase before Miracle, helping you strip boss health faster between detonation windows.
For a broader look at which Tarstones are accessible early, see our best Tarstones for beginners guide.
Best Skills to Prioritize
- Novertime (Level 1 and 3) – More Miracle duration means more Chaos stacks per window. This is the most important early investment.
- Striker (Level 1–3) – Each fist hit applies more Chaos stacks. More stacks means bigger detonation damage.
- Devotion (Level 1–3) – Strengthens Faith’s Resolve regeneration so Miracle can be re-activated faster in long fights.
- Fervor (Level 1–3) – Raises the health threshold for Faith. At Level 3, Faith activates at 35% health, giving you a much larger operating window for the Resolve bonus.
- Resilience (Level 1–3) – Gives you a chance to survive fatal blows at low health. This is what lets you play comfortably at the health thresholds where Smert becomes strongest.
- Last Vow (Level 1–4) – Unlock when you reach Tier 3. This permanently switches you to the unarmed brawler playstyle and makes all Fight Stance attacks deal meaningful damage outside of Miracle as well.
- Kicker (Level 1–3) – Adds a kick that can instantly detonate Chaos stacks. At Level 3, it doubles stacks before detonation on a 15% chance, which creates massive single-hit burst potential.
- Tenacity (Level 1–3) – Reduces Miracle’s Resolve cost while Faithful. At Level 3, it costs 30% less, which means far more frequent Miracle uses during the low-health phase.
Combat Loop
- Enter a fight with your health as high as possible. Clear opening hits with melee to build Resolve.
- When you have enough Resolve and the enemy is set up, activate Miracle to halt time. This costs half your current health.
- During the frozen window, spam Fight Stance punches to stack Chaos on the enemy as fast as possible.
- If the window is nearly over but the enemy has more health to take, push into Overtime at the cost of additional health for more stacks.
- Let time resume. All accumulated Chaos stacks detonate simultaneously for a massive damage burst.
- If you survive at low health after Miracle (which you often will), your passive Deadly Revelation kicks in, giving you Faith and boosted Resolve recovery from melee hits.
- Use the Faith phase to rebuild Resolve quickly with melee attacks, then activate Miracle again when health and Resolve allow.
- Use Kicker mid-fight to instantly detonate stacks in situations where you cannot wait for time to resume naturally.
Tips for Playing Smert the Apostate
- Always activate Miracle at high health. The 50% cost is brutal if you are already low. Entering Miracle at 80% health leaves you at 40%. Entering it at 30% leaves you at 15%, one hit from death. Pick your activation window carefully, especially in boss fights.
- Lean into the low-health playstyle. Once Fervor is maxed, Deadly Revelation activates at 35% health. This is a huge portion of a fight where you have boosted Resolve regeneration. Instead of panicking when health drops, treat it as your powered-up phase.
- Unlock Last Vow as soon as Tier 3 is accessible. The permanent Fight Stance makes every punch deal meaningful damage even outside of Miracle, which keeps your DPS high during the gaps between time-stop windows.
- Kicker is better than it looks. Its Level 2 instantly detonates all Chaos stacks on a kick hit. This gives you an emergency burst option when you need damage immediately rather than waiting for Miracle’s natural end.
- Limitless can extend Miracle for free. At max level, every 25 Chaos stacks gives you a 15% chance of adding 3 more seconds. In a fully built Smert fight against a boss, you can sometimes chain these extensions for an extraordinarily long frozen window.
- Absolution Level 4 clears debuffs on Miracle activation. This is a hidden survivability tool. If you get poisoned, burned, or frozen at a bad moment, activating Miracle clears it all instantly while also dealing burst damage. Use it as an emergency cleanse when needed.
- Use the Caged Hystrix sidearm carefully. Its Poison cloud can affect Smert too if he stays in the area. With Absolution leveled up he becomes immune to Poison, which removes that downside entirely.
Is Smert Worth Investing In?
Smert is one of the highest-damage Shells in the game when played correctly. His Miracle detonation ceiling is enormous – a fully built Smert with Striker, Kicker, and Novertime maxed can land enough Chaos hits in a single window to take huge chunks off boss health bars in one burst.
The trade-off is that he punishes poor health management more than any other Shell. Eredrim gets tankier the longer he fights. Proxima mitigates hits passively. Smert just gets lower health and asks you to keep swinging. Players who enjoy that risk loop will find him deeply rewarding. Those who prefer safer combat should start with Proxima or Eredrim before committing Glimpses to Smert.

FAQs – Mortal Shell 2 Smert the Apostate
Where is Smert the Apostate in Mortal Shell 2?
Smert is found at Prophet’s Rest in the western swamplands of Fainweald, near the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon. Fast travel to that Beacon, turn left toward the rock bridge, and follow the uphill path into the ritual area. He is at the back near a statue. His location is not automatically marked on the map, so you need to reach it yourself.
How do you unlock Smert in Mortal Shell 2?
You must complete a blood ritual by interacting with three stone circles in the area and killing enemies inside each one. Every Blood Offering ejects you from your Shell, so you need to re-enter your Shell between each circle. Once all three circles are filled with blood and glow red, Smert’s body becomes claimable. Interact with it to trigger The Convert memory and permanently unlock him.
What does Miracle do in Mortal Shell 2?
Miracle is Smert’s active ability. It sacrifices half of his current health to halt time and shift him into an unarmed Fight Stance. While time is stopped, his fist attacks stack Chaos on enemies. When the Miracle duration ends, all Chaos stacks detonate at once for a burst of damage. You can extend the window into Overtime by spending additional health. More stacks built during the window means a bigger explosion when time resumes.
What is the best build for Smert in Mortal Shell 2?
The best Smert build is the Chaos Unarmed build, centered on Miracle and Last Vow. Prioritize Novertime to extend the frozen window, Striker to add more Chaos stacks per hit, and Last Vow at Tier 3 to permanently enter Fight Stance for strong unarmed attacks even outside of Miracle. Kicker adds an instant detonation option and Tenacity reduces Miracle’s Resolve cost while Faithful. Pair with Auspicious Stone and Headsman’s Stone for Critical hit output from Last Vow attacks.
