TL;DR:
- Gragu the Insatiable is the only Shell in Mortal Shell 2 who is still alive when you first meet him – he is an NPC sitting in the One-Legged Wolf Tavern in eastern Fainweald.
- To unlock him as a Shell, you must bring him the Heart of Vatra from the Temple of Vatra east of the tavern.
- Important: Grab the Tarstone from the nearby chest inside the Temple before picking up the Heart of Vatra, or you get locked out of that area. The Week 1 Patch fixed the bug where the Heart of Vatra would trail after you in sheep form, and Gragu’s helmet now uses the correct material.
- Gragu dies after eating the Heart, and you inhabit his body to unlock him permanently.
- You need to collect roughly 5 Ova and gain Mether’s Breath at Marrow Keep before this area of eastern Fainweald even opens.
- His Staggering Blow charges a devastating punch that staggers enemies heavily – a longer hold means more damage.
- His Revered Heart passive replaces normal healing – it restores health and recharges by killing enemies.
- Hunger at Tier 4 pushes his Critical Hit chance to 78% for melee and 75% for ranged when Revered Heart is depleted.
- He has 12 skills across 4 Bond Tiers and 6 memories. Total cost to unlock all: 3,000 Gloom. Total payout: 3,250 Gloom.
Mortal Shell 2 Gragu the Insatiable is the last of the five Fainweald Shells and the most unusual to unlock. He is not a corpse buried in a grave or lying on a table. He is a living, breathing NPC who sits at the back of a tavern nursing a drink and ignoring you. Getting him as a Shell requires persistence, a side trip to a temple, and a willingness to feed a man something that kills him.
His kit is built around two things: a single devastating charge punch that staggers everything, and a health system that ties his sustain directly to how aggressively he kills. The more enemies he kills, the more healing he banks. Played right, he can clear long dungeon runs without ever touching a Beacon. This guide covers how to unlock him step by step, his full ability set, every skill in his tree, and the best build to maximize his Critical Hit potential. For the last Fainweald Shell covered before this one, see our Mortal Shell 2 Smert the Apostate guide. The complete roster is in our all Shell locations guide.
Prerequisites – What You Need Before You Can Reach Gragu
Unlike the earlier Fainweald Shells, Gragu is located in the eastern part of Fainweald, which is locked behind progression. You cannot walk there from the starting area right away.
You need to:
- Collect roughly 5 Ova by cleansing corrupted Beacons across Fainweald.
- Bring them to Marrow Keep and siphon them to receive Mether’s Breath.
- Mether’s Breath lets you remove the corrupted growth blocking the path east toward the One-Legged Wolf Tavern area.
Without completing this step first, you simply cannot reach Gragu at all. Plan your route to collect Ova while exploring the rest of Fainweald. For help navigating efficiently, see our all Beacon locations in Mortal Shell 2 guide, and grab your map fragments early using our guide on how to get a map in Mortal Shell 2.
Where to Find Gragu the Insatiable
Gragu is found inside the One-Legged Wolf Tavern in eastern Fainweald, near the One-Legged Wolf Beacon. He sits at the long table near the barkeep, on the left side of the tavern. You cannot miss him – he is the only character sitting alone, looking like he has been there a while.
Step-by-step directions:
- Activate the One-Legged Wolf Beacon in eastern Fainweald.
- Head southeast from the Beacon to the tavern building.
- Enter the One-Legged Wolf Tavern and approach Gragu seated at the left table near the barkeep.
- Interact with him and exhaust all his dialogue. He will eventually mention he needs the Heart of a God – this is the Heart of Vatra.
Important tip: Keep pressing the interact button repeatedly even if Gragu does not respond right away. There is no specific number of prompts required. Just keep at it and he will open up. Leaving the tavern and coming back does not advance his dialogue, so stick with it in one visit.
How to Get the Heart of Vatra
The Heart of Vatra is found in the Temple of Vatra, located northeast of the One-Legged Wolf Tavern across a bridge. The route is straightforward but has one critical trap you must avoid.
Step-by-step:
- From the One-Legged Wolf Tavern, head east along the cliffside path.
- Cross the chasm via the bridge or rope gate to reach the Temple of Vatra entrance.
- Push through the temple grounds, fighting or avoiding enemies along the way.
- Before you do anything else at the top of the temple, find and open the nearby chest to claim the Tarstone inside. This is critical – once you pick up the Heart of Vatra, all petrified enemies in the area awaken and the route seals behind you.
- Head to the back of the temple and climb to the highest section.
- At the top, you will find the Heart of Vatra sitting in the hands of a statue. Take it.
- Enemies wake up throughout the area. You do not need to fight them – run back to the tavern.
Do not skip the Tarstone chest. Multiple players have reported losing access to that item permanently by picking up the Heart of Vatra first. Get the chest, then get the Heart. The Berserker’s Stone lock-out bug that could also affect this area has been patched, but the standard Temple trap remains — always grab the chest first.
How to Unlock Gragu as a Shell
- Return to the One-Legged Wolf Tavern with the Heart of Vatra in your inventory.
- Speak to Gragu and exhaust his dialogue again until the option to give an item appears.
- Select the Heart of Vatra and hand it over.
- Gragu dies immediately after consuming it.
- Choose to inhabit him to trigger The Tavern memory sequence.
- Complete the memory to permanently unlock Gragu as a playable Shell.
Unlike every other Shell in the game, you are not finding a dead warrior’s body – you are watching an NPC die and then stepping into his shell. It is one of the more memorable moments in Mortal Shell 2’s story.
Who Is Gragu the Insatiable?
Gragu is a new character in Mortal Shell 2, not a returning Shell from the first game. His title “the Insatiable” hints at an endless hunger that defines both his personality as an NPC and his entire passive mechanic as a Shell. He is a large, burly warrior who carries his sustain from kills rather than from consumables or passive mitigation.
His motto: “The heart speaks no lies.”
As a Shell, Gragu is built around two ideas that reinforce each other. First, Staggering Blow – a charged punch that does exactly what it sounds like and opens enemies for follow-up attacks. Second, Revered Heart – a unique healing system that restores health but recharges through kills rather than Beacons. This makes him extremely self-sufficient during exploration and normal combat, where kills are plentiful. The challenge comes in boss fights, where kills are few and the charge time on Staggering Blow can expose you to counterattacks. His Hunger skill at Tier 4 partially compensates by granting huge Critical Hit chance while Revered Heart is empty, incentivizing you to heal at exactly the right moment for maximum offense.
Gragu the Insatiable – Abilities
Active – Staggering Blow
Gragu charges a devastating punch that inflicts heavy stagger on impact. The longer you hold the charge, the more damage it deals. A fully charged Staggering Blow is one of the hardest single hits available in early Fainweald combat, and the stagger it applies creates a window to follow up with your full combo or a Riposte — triggered with a light attack on the red dot, as heavy attacks no longer open a Riposte since the Day One Patch.
With skill investment, Staggering Blow gains Weak and Fragile debuffs, Break Damage, and eventually the Heartless ability at Tier 4 that lets it rip the hearts out of humanoid enemies for an instant kill and explosion. It costs Resolve to use and scales significantly from Attunement at Tier 2.
Passive – Revered Heart
Gragu carries a Revered Heart that he can use to restore health. Unlike a standard healing flask, Revered Heart recharges by killing enemies. Each kill replenishes a portion of its power, and with Bloodthirst at Tier 1 maxed, kills replenish an additional 80% per kill, meaning it refills extremely fast during normal exploration.
This passive completely replaces conventional healing. You never run out of health recovery as long as you keep killing. In boss fights where kill opportunities are rare, you need to time your use carefully and rely on Fortify at Tier 4 to top it up at Beacons between attempts.
Gragu the Insatiable – Full Skill Tree
Gragu has 12 skills across 4 Bond Tiers. Increase his Bond by spending Glimpses with Zhirelle the Shellkeeper at Marrow Keep to unlock memories and new skill rows. Glimpses are no longer a finite resource after the Week 1 Patch, so you can invest fully in Gragu’s tree without rationing between Shells. If you later want to reset his Bond and recover your Glimpses, use Mether’s Severance — a new item added in the Week 1 Patch, purchasable from Merrick — and hand it to Zhirelle. For efficient leveling to unlock Bond Tiers faster, see our fast Gloom farming guide.

Tier 4 Skills
Heartless (3 levels) – The most aggressive Staggering Blow upgrade. Against small and medium humanoids, a fully charged Staggering Blow rips out the victim’s heart, killing them instantly and triggering an explosion.
- Level 1: Staggering Blow instantly kills the target
- Level 2: Gragu restores 15 Health from the kill
- Level 3: The target explodes for 150 splash damage to nearby enemies
Hunger (3 levels) – While Revered Heart is completely depleted, Gragu gains a massive Critical Hit chance bonus. This is the build-defining Tier 4 skill.
- Level 1: +30% Critical Hit chance while Revered Heart is empty
- Level 2: +40% Critical Hit chance
- Level 3: +60% Critical Hit chance
With Hunger maxed and Auspicious Stone equipped, Gragu’s melee Critical Hit chance reaches approximately 78%. That is not a gamble anymore – nearly every hit lands as a Critical, making Critical damage Tarstones enormously valuable on him.
Fortify (3 levels) – Resting at a Beacon now partially replenishes Revered Heart instead of requiring kills to do it.
- Level 1: Beacon rest replenishes up to 1 Revered Heart use
- Level 2: Replenishes up to 2 uses
- Level 3: Replenishes up to 3 uses
Gragu’s Memories
Gragu has 6 memories. Unlocking all of them costs 3,000 Gloom total and pays back 3,250 Gloom, making the investment slightly profitable in currency terms. Each memory unlocks the next Bond Tier and its skill row.
- The Tavern – initial memory, unlocks on Shell claim
- The Child – 500 Glimpse → 500 Gloom
- The Child 2 – 500 Glimpse → 750 Gloom
- The Passenger – 500 Glimpse → 500 Gloom
- The Divine – 500 Glimpse → 500 Gloom
- Pick Your Poison – 500 Glimpse → 500 Gloom
Best Build for Gragu the Insatiable
The strongest Gragu build is the Critical Hit build, designed around Hunger’s enormous Critical Hit chance bonus and Staggering Blow’s debuffs setting up follow-up attacks. The core loop is simple: use Revered Heart to heal and trigger Bloodlust’s 200% damage bonus, then fight at low Revered Heart power to keep Hunger’s crit bonus active, top up selectively with kills, and land Staggering Blow on cooldown to stagger and debuff everything.
Best Weapons for Gragu
Primary Weapon: Axe and Dagger
The Axe and Dagger’s fast attack speed makes it the best choice for Gragu. More hits per second means more Critical Hit procs when Hunger is active, more Bloodcurse applications from Arbiter’s Prize, and faster Resolve generation to fuel more Staggering Blow uses. It is also one of the only weapons that can slot Arbiter’s Prize as an infusion. Our guide on how to get the Axe and Dagger in Mortal Shell 2 covers exactly where to find it. For a wider look at weapon options, see our best weapons for beginners guide.
Sidearm: Triarch Repeater
The Triarch Repeater is excellent for Gragu because its rapid consecutive shots apply consistent Stagger pressure on Break gauges before closing to melee. With Marksman’s Stone and Hunger active, ranged Critical Hit chance also climbs to around 75%, making the Triarch Repeater land crits almost every shot. Use it to soften enemy posture before Staggering Blow and your melee combo finish the job.
Best Tarstones for Gragu
- Arbiter’s Prize – Infuses weapons with Bloodcurse. Combined with Heartwork at Tier 1, Gragu becomes immune to Bloodcurse himself, meaning he benefits from applying it to enemies with zero downside. Heartwork Level 3 also gives a 3% chance to fully replenish Revered Heart every time he inflicts Bloodcurse, making fast-hitting weapons like the Axe and Dagger proc this surprisingly often.
- Auspicious Stone – Increases melee Critical Hit rate. Stacks on top of Hunger’s bonus to push total melee crit chance to approximately 78%.
- Headsman’s Stone – Increases Critical Hit damage for melee. Essential when your crit rate is near 80% – every hit needs to count as hard as possible.
- Marksman’s Stone – Increases ranged Critical Hit rate. Pairs with Hunger’s ranged crit bonus for the Triarch Repeater.
- Berserker’s Stone – Increases melee damage at low health (up to 165% at max level while below 50% health). Gragu naturally operates at low Revered Heart for Hunger’s bonus, which can mean fighting at reduced health — Berserker’s Stone turns that into a damage amplifier rather than just a risk. Note that the Week 1 Patch converted the Berserker’s Stone into a Fragile Tarstone with a stronger passive bonus and an added on-break effect. It will eventually break with use, but additional copies can be found in the world and purchased from Merrick, so keep a spare in your inventory.
- Acolyte’s Stone – Reduces charged attack cost and boosts their Critical rate. Key for making Staggering Blow cost even less and hit as hard as possible on each use.
For a full list of Tarstone locations, see our best Tarstones for beginners guide and our Tarforge guide for how to upgrade them.
Priority Skills to Unlock
- Bloodthirst (Level 1–3) – Maximize Revered Heart recharge per kill immediately. This is what makes Gragu self-sufficient through long exploration runs.
- Escalation (Level 1–3) – Pushes Staggering Blow to 170% damage. Core damage upgrade for your primary ability.
- Attunement (Level 1–3) – Cuts Staggering Blow Resolve cost by 50%. More frequent uses means more staggers and more debuffs from Anger later.
- Harvest (Level 2 and 4) – 4 and then 8 uses of Revered Heart is transformative. Against bosses where kills are rare, having 8 charges available completely changes survivability.
- Anger (Level 1–3) – Adds Weak, Fragile, and Break Damage to Staggering Blow. This is what makes the ability a full combo opener rather than just big damage.
- Bloodlust (Level 1) – The 200% damage next-attack bonus after Revered Heart use is enormous. Use Revered Heart strategically to time it for maximum burst windows.
- Hunger (Level 1–3) – The critical skill. Once Tier 4 is unlocked, max Hunger immediately. This changes Gragu’s playstyle fundamentally and makes every melee hit a near-guaranteed crit.
- Fortify (Level 1–3) – Resting replenishes up to 3 Revered Heart uses. Essential for boss attempts where you need a guaranteed starting health reserve.
Combat Loop
- Open enemies with Staggering Blow charged to full for the Weak + Fragile + Break Damage stack from Anger. The stagger gives you a free window. When the Break meter fills, trigger the Riposte with a light attack — heavy attacks no longer open a Riposte since the Day One Patch.
- Follow up with Axe and Dagger light combos to apply Bloodcurse via Arbiter’s Prize and build Critical Hits through Hunger + Auspicious Stone.
- When health drops, use Revered Heart to heal. Bloodlust Level 1 makes your next melee attack deal 200% damage after the heal – time that swing for the most threatening enemy.
- Keep Revered Heart at low to zero charges whenever possible during boss fights to maintain Hunger’s 60% Critical Hit bonus.
- Use Triarch Repeater between melee windows to apply Break Damage and land ranged Crits while repositioning.
- When Revered Heart fully recharges via kills, activate Devourer‘s bonus by staying at full power briefly for the health-per-kill perk in group fights.
Tips for Playing Gragu the Insatiable
- Never enter a boss fight with an empty Revered Heart. With Fortify maxed, resting at a Beacon before a boss restores 3 uses. Top up before every attempt. Boss fights rarely give you enough kills to recharge during the encounter itself.
- Time Bloodlust for maximum burst. The 200% damage next-attack bonus from using Revered Heart does not last forever. Pop a Revered Heart use when you have a safe opening and immediately land your best hit – charged Staggering Blow if an enemy is staggered, or a fully buffed Critical from the Axe and Dagger.
- Hunger and Revered Heart are a push-pull system. Hunger is strongest when Revered Heart is empty. Bloodlust and healing are strongest when you use Revered Heart. Learn to bounce between the two states based on fight pressure rather than always healing the moment you can.
- Heartless is worth unlocking for exploration. Against the humanoid enemies that fill most of Fainweald and Mammon, a fully charged Staggering Blow instantly kills small and medium targets and explodes them for splash damage at Heartless Level 3. Clearing enemy groups becomes fast and trivial.
- Devourer turns full-heart moments into farm time. The bonus 15 Resolve per kill while heart is full pairs beautifully with Attunement’s Staggering Blow cost reduction. Use it to bank Resolve for a Staggering Blow chain before depleting heart for Hunger.
- Stock spare Berserker’s Stones. The Week 1 Patch converted the Berserker’s Stone to a Fragile Tarstone — it will eventually break with use. Buy replacements from Merrick or pick up extra copies in the world so you are never without one, particularly given how central it is to surviving at low health for Hunger procs.
- Use the Berserker’s Stone consciously. It maxes out at 165% melee damage at 50% health or below. If you know you can sustain at low health through careful play, dropping to that threshold before a boss damage phase turns Gragu into a genuine damage powerhouse.
For Seals that pair with Gragu’s aggressive melee playstyle, check our best Seals in Mortal Shell 2 guide. Vatra’s Seal is a popular choice – its Perfect Harden triggers deal Break Damage, which layers with Anger’s Break Damage bonus from Staggering Blow.
Is Gragu Worth Unlocking in Mortal Shell 2?
Gragu divides community opinion more than any other Fainweald Shell. His exploration value is excellent – Revered Heart sustained by kills means he almost never needs Beacon rests during normal dungeon runs, and his kill-on-full-heart Devourer bonus makes him efficient at farming Gloom. He is also genuinely fun to play against regular enemy groups where Staggering Blow deletes humanoids outright with Heartless.
His weakness is in boss fights. Charge windows for Staggering Blow get punished by multi-phase bosses with fast punish windows, and kill-based Heart recharges are nearly useless in single-target encounters. If you plan to run him primarily through bosses, invest heavily in Harvest for 8 uses of Revered Heart, Fortify for Beacon-based top-ups, and Bloodlust for burst windows after each heal.
Among tier lists, Gragu ranks anywhere from S-tier to C-tier depending on what the reviewer weights. For open-world exploration and early-mid bosses, he is excellent. For late Mammon endgame bosses, other Shells edge him out in consistency. He is best as a secondary Shell to swap to when clearing areas between boss fights – his sustain keeps you healthier over long runs than any other Shell in Fainweald.
For full trophy tracking, unlocking Gragu earns his individual trophy/achievement. See our Mortal Shell 2 trophy and achievement guide for all conditions. For planning beyond Fainweald, our New Game Plus guide covers how Gragu’s kill-based sustain scales in NG+ content where enemy density stays high.
FAQs – Mortal Shell 2 Gragu the Insatiable
Where is Gragu the Insatiable in Mortal Shell 2?
Gragu is found inside the One-Legged Wolf Tavern in eastern Fainweald, near the One-Legged Wolf Beacon. He sits at the long table on the left near the barkeep. The eastern area of Fainweald is locked until you collect roughly 5 Ova and obtain Mether’s Breath at Marrow Keep to clear the corrupted growth blocking the path.
How do you unlock Gragu in Mortal Shell 2?
Talk to Gragu in the tavern and exhaust all his dialogue until he asks for the Heart of a God. Head east from the tavern, cross the bridge, and push through the Temple of Vatra to find the Heart of Vatra at the top in a statue’s hands. Before picking it up, grab the Tarstone from the nearby chest or you get locked out of that item permanently. Return the Heart to Gragu, watch him eat it and die, then inhabit his body to unlock him as a Shell.
What is the Heart of Vatra in Mortal Shell 2?
The Heart of Vatra is a key item found at the top of the Temple of Vatra, east of the One-Legged Wolf Tavern. It is held in the hands of a statue at the back of the temple. Picking it up awakens all petrified enemies in the area. Its only purpose is to be given to Gragu to unlock him as a playable Shell – once he eats it, the item is gone.
What does Revered Heart do in Mortal Shell 2?
Revered Heart is Gragu’s passive healing ability, replacing conventional healing flasks. Using it restores a portion of health. It recharges by killing enemies – each kill replenishes a percentage of its power, and with Bloodthirst maxed, each kill replenishes an additional 80%, making it refill very quickly during normal combat. Harvest at Tier 2 expands total charges up to 8 uses per refill, and Fortify at Tier 4 lets Beacon rests partially replenish it for boss preparation. Glimpses are no longer a finite resource after the Week 1 Patch, so you can invest in Gragu’s full skill tree including Harvest and Fortify without sacrificing other Shells.
