TL;DR:
- There are 9 Shells in Mortal Shell 2 but only 8 are permanently unlockable – Harros is lost after the prologue.
- Tiel and Proxima are the easiest early Shells – both are marked on your map at the start.
- Some Shells require a boss fight, a delivery quest, or a ritual to unlock.
- No Shell is missable – you can collect all of them in free roam after the final boss.
- Getting all 8 Shells unlocks the Shell Seeker trophy/achievement.
Mortal Shell 2 all shell locations is one of the most searched topics right now, and for good reason. Shells are the heart of the game. Without one, your Harbinger is basically defenseless. Each Shell you find is like unlocking a new character class – different stats, different abilities, and a completely different way to fight. If you are new to the game, our Mortal Shell 2 beginner’s guide is a great starting point before you go Shell hunting.
There are 9 Shells in total, but Harros is only playable during the prologue and gets lost as part of the story. The remaining 8 are what this guide covers. You can also check out our full Mortal Shell 2 all boss list since several Shells are locked behind boss encounters you’ll want to prepare for.
What Are Shells in Mortal Shell 2?
Shells are the remains of fallen warriors scattered across the world. Your base Harbinger form has almost no combat power on its own. Once you step into a Shell, you get that warrior’s full stats, passive traits, and active abilities.
Every Shell plays differently. Some are built for raw aggression. Others are tanks. A few have special mechanics that change your entire approach to combat. You can swap between any Shells you have collected at the Shellkeeper in Marrow Keep, or at any Beacon in the world.
Once you find a Shell, you need to complete its Memory sequence to permanently add it to your collection. After that, you can upgrade your bond with each Shell using Glimpses to unlock tiered stat bonuses and stronger abilities. If you want to know more about leveling, read our guide on how to level up using Gloom in Mortal Shell 2.
Important Things to Know Before You Start
- No Shells are missable. You can collect all 8 in free roam after defeating the final boss, before entering New Game Plus.
- First 2 Shells are map-marked. Tiel and Proxima are automatically shown on your map when you first reach Marrow Keep.
- Don’t spend Glimpses to mark Shell locations. You need Glimpses to upgrade Shell Bond levels. Use those on upgrades instead of map markers.
- World is open-ended. You don’t have to unlock Shells in any fixed order.
All Shell Locations in Mortal Shell 2
Below is every Shell in the game listed in the order most players will encounter them during a normal run.
Shell 1 – Tiel the Acolyte (Fainweald)
Location: Southeast of the Widow’s Overlook Beacon, near Mushroom Village in Fainweald.

Tiel is the first Shell most players will find and also one of the best for beginners. His body is buried in a shallow grave just outside Mushroom Village. Head southeast from the Widow’s Overlook Beacon, look for the grave outline on the ground, and interact with it. No boss fight needed. No quest required.
Why pick Tiel: His passive lets him become briefly undetectable when you time a dodge well. This gives you a free window to attack from behind while invisible, which is incredibly useful before you have learned enemy patterns.
- Lingering Shadow: Tiel gains Shadow and prepares a Shadow Strike with his dagger.
- Shadow Dash: Dodging just before taking a hit grants Shadow and inflicts Stagger Damage on the attacker.

Shell 2 – Proxima (Fainweald)
Location: Northeast of Blackridge Pass Beacon, inside the Shattered Beacon dungeon.

Proxima is the second Shell marked on your map by Zhirelle at Marrow Keep. Head northeast from the Blackridge Pass Beacon and look for a structure that resembles a Beacon. Enter it and go to the back of the area. Interact with the body on the ground. That’s it – no boss, no puzzle.
Why pick Proxima: She has built-in damage mitigation and a hook ability that can pull enemies toward you or close the gap yourself. She suits players who like controlling fight distance.
- Biosampler: Fires a hook from her left arm to pull enemies in, followed by a Lightning strike.
- Grafted Armor: Gives a 15% base chance to reduce incoming melee or ranged damage by 50%, with no stagger.
Shell 3 – Eredrim (Fainweald)
Location: Inside the Citadel of Penance, northwestern Fainweald.

Eredrim requires entering a fortress on the far west side of Fainweald. One reliable way to get there is by interacting with a mysterious bag near the Overrun Quarry dungeon on the eastern side of Fainweald – it teleports you directly to the Citadel. Once inside, work toward the center of the fortress and take one of the two elevators up. The floor collapses and drops you into a fighting pit where a miniboss named The Warden attacks. Defeat The Warden, then interact with Eredrim’s body in the arena.
Tip: Most of The Warden’s attacks are unblockable. Switch to Tiel before this fight and use Shadow Dash to dodge everything, then attack from behind while invisible.
Shell 4 – Smert (Fainweald)
Location: Southwest of the Outskirts of Nochte Beacon, in the swamplands of western Fainweald.

Smert’s unlock involves a ritual. Find his body surrounded by cultists near three large stone circles. You must make a Blood Offering in each circle by killing enemies on top of them. After all three circles are filled, Smert’s body glows and becomes claimable.
Warning: Each Blood Offering knocks you out of your Shell. Make sure you re-enter your Shell before doing the next offering, or you can die without Shell protection.
Why pick Smert: He has a time-stopping mechanic and becomes stronger at very low health, which appeals to aggressive risk-takers.
- Miracle: Halts time and enters Fight Stance. Unarmed attacks apply Chaos stacks that explode when time resumes.
- Deadly Revelation: At 10% health or below, Smert gains the Faith buff.
Shell 5 – Gragu (Fainweald)
Location: One-Legged Wolf Tavern, eastern Fainweald.

Gragu involves a short delivery quest. First, reach the One-Legged Wolf Tavern – this area only unlocks after you have collected roughly five Ova and gained the Mether’s Breath power from Marrow Keep. Enter the tavern and speak to Gragu at the table near the bartender. Exhaust all his dialogue. He will eventually ask you for the Heart of Vatra.
To find it, head east from the tavern, cross the chasm via the gateway, and push through the Temple of Vatra all the way to the back. The Heart of Vatra is sitting in the hands of a statue at the top of the stairs. Picking it up awakens all petrified enemies in the area – you don’t need to fight them. Just run back to Gragu and hand over the Heart. He dies after eating it and you can inhabit him as your Shell.
Important: Before picking up the Heart of Vatra, grab the Tarstone from a chest nearby. Once you grab the Heart, enemies spawn and you get locked out of that area temporarily.
- Staggering Blow: A charged punch that inflicts heavy stagger. Longer charge = more damage.
- Revered Heart: Restores a portion of health. Refills by killing enemies.
For help with weapons to pair with Gragu’s aggressive style, see our best weapons for beginners in Mortal Shell 2 guide.
Shell 6 – Sester Genessa (Mammon)
Location: Revenant Graves area, southeast of Outskirts of Mammon Beacon.
Genessa is the most complex Shell unlock in the game. Here’s the full step-by-step process:

- Exhaust all dialogue with Sester Genessa in the Marrow Keep training grounds.
- Check the walls past the sarcophagi for a white glyph. Strike it to reveal a hidden chamber containing a chalice.
- Have the Slayer Seal in your inventory (do not equip it). This lets you enter the Desolate Keep.
- Complete the Desolate Keep and collect the Blackmarrow Key. Speak to Genessa again after leaving.
- Travel east in Mammon to the Abbey Entrance Beacon. Nearby, look for a field of red flickering specters. Interact with the glowing red object they are all facing.
- This triggers a boss fight against Sester Secundus.
- Defeat Sester Secundus to receive the Sester’s Censer item.
- Return to Genessa in Marrow Keep and give her the Sester’s Censer. Watch the Memory sequence to fully unlock her.
Note: Genessa is the only Shell upgraded through direct conversation with her – not through the Shellkeeper NPC. If you want to increase her bond level, return to the training grounds and talk to her.
Shell 7 – Lazlo (Mammon)
Location: Underground area west of High Lords Courtyard Beacon, Mammon.

From the High Lords Courtyard Beacon, head west to a large stairwell going down into an underground area. Fight or navigate past Armored Knights and Coffin Eye Beholders to reach the end. There you face the boss Vellen, High Lord of Mammon in an underground cathedral. After defeating Vellen, go into the room behind them and interact with Lazlo’s body on the ground.
- Retribution: Heats his armor to release a shockwave. Repeated use triggers Overheat, creating a stronger shockwave with Burn stacks but temporarily disabling the armor.
- Fortified Plate: Provides a base 10% damage reduction while armor is active.
Shell 8 – Sariel the Endless (Mammon)
Location: Southeast of The Silent Steps Beacon, then into the Chamber of Becoming dungeon, Mammon.

Sariel has a two-stage encounter. First, find Sariel on a large stone platform southeast of The Silent Steps Beacon. Deal enough damage to force him to retreat – he moves through the southern walls, opening them to reveal the Chamber of Becoming dungeon entrance. Follow him inside and fight Sariel, the Endless in the inner chamber.
During this fight, you must also attack and destroy all 4 tombstones in the room. Leaving them active lets Sariel revive. Once all tombstones are broken and Sariel is fully defeated, interact with his body to unlock him as a Shell. You’ll also receive the Clockwork Scythe weapon here.
- Exodus of Thorns: Releases parasitic thorns that track and hit nearby enemies, inflicting Curse stacks. Each use also applies Pain to Sariel himself.
- Purge: When Sariel has no Pain, 50% of incoming damage converts to Pain instead. At max Pain, Sariel dodges faster.
How to Use and Upgrade Shells
Once you unlock a Shell, you equip it at the Shellkeeper in Marrow Keep or at any Beacon in the world. Each Shell has its own Bond level that you upgrade by spending Glimpses. Higher Bond levels increase stats and unlock more powerful ability tiers. Use our best Seals guide to find passive bonuses that work well alongside your favorite Shell.
You can also explore the Tarforge system to upgrade your weapons alongside your Shell for the best possible build. For navigation between areas, check our how to fast travel in Mortal Shell 2 guide to move quickly across the map.
Shell Seeker Trophy / Achievement
Collecting all 8 Shells earns you the Shell Seeker trophy on PlayStation and achievement on Xbox and PC. There is also a separate trophy/achievement for each individual Shell you find. None are missable – you can grab anything you missed in free roam after the final boss. For a full breakdown of every trophy and what it takes, see our Mortal Shell 2 trophy and achievement guide.
Tips for Finding All Shells Faster
- Get your map early. The fog of war makes exploration hard. Read our guide on how to get a map in Mortal Shell 2 so you always know where you are.
- Use Beacons to fast travel. Make sure you activate every Beacon you find. See all Beacon locations in Mortal Shell 2 to make sure you haven’t missed any.
- Prepare before boss Shells. Eredrim, Lazlo, and Sariel all require defeating a boss. Learn the mechanics with guides for each if you get stuck. For Sariel specifically, prioritize the tombstones first.
- Do Genessa last. Her unlock is multi-step and requires completing other content first. Save her for when you’re already deep into Mammon.
- Don’t spend Glimpses on map markers. The Shellkeeper lets you spend Glimpses to mark Shells on your map, but this guide tells you every location for free. Save those Glimpses for bond upgrades.
