    Isaac mortal shell 2

    TL;DR

    • Isaac the Scholar Prince is the final boss of the Faded Citadel gate in the Ruins of Mammon region.
    • He fights with a sword and shield in Phase 1, then drops the shield and wields three swords in Phase 2.
    • You can skip Phase 2 entirely by avoiding the Riposte when he drops to his knees at 50% health.
    • Summon Lazlo before the fight — it costs just 1 Glimpse and takes a lot of pressure off you.
    • Don’t chase him. Let Isaac come to you, dodge the combo, then hit back with a short burst.
    • He rewards the Scholar’s Wormstone Tarstone for the Clockwork Scythe on death.

Isaac the Scholar Prince is one of the trickier major bosses you will face in Mortal Shell 2. He sits at the end of the Faded Citadel, which is the last of the six Corrupted Gate dungeons across Fainweald and Mammon. By the time you reach him, you have probably already taken on a few other tough bosses — so you know the drill. But Isaac has a few habits that can catch you off guard if you don’t know what to expect.

This guide covers where to find Isaac, how to reach his arena, every attack he uses in both phases, and the best ways to deal with him. If you are still getting comfortable with the game’s combat before this fight, check out our Mortal Shell 2 beginner’s guide and our breakdown of how to parry in Mortal Shell 2 — both will help you a lot here.

Where to Find Isaac the Scholar Prince in Mortal Shell 2

Isaac is found deep inside the Faded Citadel, which is located in the Ruins of Mammon. This is the southernmost of the six Corrupted Gates and one of the last ones most players tackle.

To get to him, you need to push through the Faded Citadel dungeon and first defeat the Servants of the Scholar-Prince. This is a multi-enemy encounter where you have to extinguish blue flames in two different zones to bring the enemies down. Once you clear that fight, move forward to activate the Citadel Atrium Beacon. From the beacon, keep following the path deeper into the dungeon.

Before you drop into the boss arena, you will find NPC Ruk standing nearby. Ruk tells you about Isaac’s backstory — the prince was sick, and Ruk tried to treat him, but the treatment ended up mutating him into the creature you are about to fight. You will also find a Lazlo summon nearby. Activate it before you drop in. It only costs 1 Glimpse and it makes this fight noticeably easier.

Isaac the Scholar Prince Boss Overview

Isaac looks like a tall insect-like creature — a Mothman-style mutation. He was once a prince but the experiments performed on him by Ruk and the Scholars of Marrow Keep twisted him into something unrecognizable. He is the final boss of the Faded Citadel gate, which means defeating him drops an Ova needed to progress the main story.

    • Location: Ashen Sanctum, Faded Citadel, Ruins of Mammon
    • Gate: Gate of Infinity (south gate)
    • Phases: 2
    • Reward: Scholar’s Wormstone (Clockwork Scythe Tarstone) + Gloom
    • Spirit Summon: Lazlo

The Scholar’s Wormstone Tarstone is the reward you get from this fight. It unlocks a special ability for the Clockwork Scythe that gradually drains your Resolve to keep the saw mechanism running, empowering every attack you make while it is active. It is a strong upgrade for players who like that weapon.

How to Reach Isaac — Step by Step

    • Enter the Gate of Infinity at the Faded Citadel.
    • Cross the first hallway and take the staircase into the Ashen Sanctum sub-location.
    • Progress through the area — there is only one path, so you won’t get lost.
    • Defeat the Depraved enemies and extinguish the blue flames to clear the path.
    • Defeat the Servants of the Scholar-Prince mini-boss encounter.
    • Activate the Citadel Atrium Beacon.
    • Continue down the only available path until you reach the boss arena entrance.
    • Activate the Lazlo spirit summon before entering.
    • Drop into the arena to start the fight.

Isaac the Scholar Prince Phase 1 Strategy

When the fight begins, Isaac has a sword in one hand and a large shield in the other. He is your classic sword-and-board fighter. His attacks are not super fast and they are not wildly unpredictable — the key issue is his reach. His Leaping Lunge can close the gap almost instantly, which means you should never try to heal directly in front of him, even from what feels like a safe distance. He can cover that space before your flask animation finishes.

The best rule for this phase is simple: do not chase him. Let Isaac come to you. He will usually swing two or three times in a row and then pause briefly. That pause is your window to hit back. Land a short combo and back off. Repeat that pattern and Phase 1 becomes very manageable.

His shield blocks sidearm shots, so if your strategy relies on ranged damage, use Lazlo to pull Isaac’s attention. With Lazlo taking aggro, you can coat your sidearm with a Tarstone element like fire and fire away. Just don’t stand still too long — staying stationary leaves you wide open.

All of Isaac’s ground attacks can be parried. If you are comfortable with parrying, this phase gives you plenty of chances to build the Break meter and land a Riposte for big damage. If parrying is not your style, Tiel’s Shadow Dodge is a great alternative — use the perfect dodge to avoid his combo and punish from behind.

When Isaac creates distance, you can try a charged shoulder bash to deal heavy Stagger Damage and force him to flinch, giving you another opening to attack.

    Isaac Phase 1 Notable Attacks

    • Leaping Lunge: Isaac jumps forward and pounces at you with his sword. He does this when he is far away. He stands still for a moment after landing — use that window to attack him.
    • Aerial Spin Slash: Isaac flies upward and spins, then swings his sword downward. He will stand still on the ground for a beat after landing. This is a great punish window. Focus on dodging air attacks and waiting for the landing.
    • Ground Slash Combo: Regular two or three hit sword swings while on the ground. These are the safest attacks to parry if that is your approach.

The most important habit in Phase 1 is watching what he does first before committing to a parry. His attack patterns repeat, so after a couple of attempts you will recognize each one. Don’t rush in — let the fight come to you.

How to Skip Phase 2 (Optional)

This is something a lot of players don’t know. When Isaac drops to around 50% health, he will fall to his knees. This is the game prompting you to perform a Riposte. If you do the Riposte at this moment, his shield gets ripped away and Phase 2 begins.

But if you skip the Riposte, Isaac keeps his shield. He stays in Phase 1 mode for the rest of the fight, using the same predictable attack set from the start. To skip it, while he is down, only hit him with heavy attacks or only strike him from behind. This prevents the Phase 2 trigger entirely.

This trick is useful if you are struggling with Phase 2 or if you prefer the more manageable Phase 1 combat. It is not required — but it is good to know it exists.

Isaac the Scholar Prince Phase 2 Strategy

If you let Phase 2 trigger, Isaac drops his shield and picks up two extra swords, fighting with three blades total. He becomes much more aggressive and unpredictable. He constantly moves back and forth, always chasing you around the arena.

The good news is that without the shield, your sidearm shots can now hit him. The bad news is that landing those shots is harder because he rarely slows down. He swings the three swords in quick succession — even if you parry the first strike, the follow-up swings can still hit you. Be careful about committing to parries here. It is sometimes better to dodge the full string and then punish the recovery.

Stay consistent with the same core approach from Phase 1: wait for him to close in, dodge the sequence, and counter with a few quick hits before retreating. Don’t get greedy.

    Isaac Phase 2 Notable Attacks

    • Triple Sword Combo: He swings all three swords one after another quickly. Parrying the first does not protect you from the others. Dodge the full combo instead and hit back after.
    • Unparryable Rush Stab: A red warning appears before this one. He charges forward with a forceful stab. Wait until he is close, then sidestep to avoid it.
    • Pin Cushion Sequence: He follows you and stabs repeatedly downward at your feet. Each strike has the same rhythm — except the last one. He waits slightly longer in the air before bringing the sixth hit down to trip you up. Time your dodge for that delayed final blow.
    • Final Spin Attack: At very low health, he spins and swings diagonally about five times, then finishes with a rapid spinning strike. Dodge to the left with each swing, staying close to him rather than running away, and you will avoid the whole sequence cleanly.

Best Setup for the Isaac Fight

Before you enter the arena, make sure your gear is ready. Here are some things that will help:

    • Shell: Tiel is excellent here. The Shadow Dodge ability lets you get a perfect dodge on almost any of Isaac’s attacks, including the aerial ones, and you can follow it up with a Shadow Strike while he has no idea where you are. If you haven’t found Tiel yet, check out our guide on the first shell location in Mortal Shell 2 and our breakdown of the best shells for beginners.
    • Summon Lazlo: Always activate the Lazlo spirit summon before dropping into the arena. It only costs 1 Glimpse. Lazlo draws Isaac’s attention, giving you breathing room to use Tarstones on your weapons or fire off sidearm shots.
    • Tarstones: Coat your primary weapon or sidearm with a Tarstone element like fire before the fight begins. Burning damage over time stacks up well during the pauses between Isaac’s attack strings. See our guide on the best Tarstones for beginners if you need help choosing.
    • Weapons: Any well-upgraded primary weapon works fine here. Isaac does not have elemental resistances that punish you hard for a specific choice. Focus on having something you are comfortable with and that you have upgraded with Gloom. Our best weapons for beginners guide can help if you are still deciding.
    • Sidearms: In Phase 1 his shield blocks ranged shots, so save your sidearm for Phase 2 when his shield is gone. Use Lazlo to create openings for clean shots. Check out our best sidearms for beginners guide for options.
    • Upgrade your Harbinger: Spend your accumulated Gloom before this fight. Leveling up increases your health and damage, making both you and your Shell more effective against a hard-hitting boss like Isaac.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

    • Chasing Isaac when he backs away. This is the biggest trap. He wants you to rush in. Let him come to you instead.
    • Healing at mid-range. His Leaping Lunge reaches farther than it looks. Only heal when he is locked into an animation or when Lazlo has his full attention.
    • Trying to parry all three swords in Phase 2. The three-sword combo in Phase 2 swings too fast for most parry attempts to cover all hits. Dodge the string rather than fishing for a parry on the first hit.
    • Ignoring the delayed sixth hit in the Pin Cushion attack. He changes the timing on the last downward stab to catch you off guard. Watch for that delay and don’t dodge early.
    • Skipping the Lazlo summon. It is right there before you drop in. There is no reason not to use it.
    • Entering underprepared. If you have not applied Tarstones to your weapons or upgraded your Shell, do that before the fight.

    Isaac the Scholar Prince Rewards

When you defeat Isaac the Scholar Prince in Mortal Shell 2, you receive:

    • Scholar’s Wormstone — A Tarstone for the Clockwork Scythe. It gradually drains your Resolve to keep the saw running, and every attack while the saw is spinning carries the augment. Strong sustained damage output if you have the Clockwork Scythe equipped.
    • Gloom — A substantial amount, one of the bigger payouts among the six Corrupted Gate bosses.
    • Ova — Dropped from the Beacon after the fight. This is required to progress the main story toward the Unfound Path.

After clearing the Faded Citadel, a beacon spawns that contains the Ova. You will need to collect Ova from all six Corrupted Gates to unlock the Unfound Path, which is the game’s final dungeon. Isaac is a hard stop on that route — you cannot skip him if you want to reach the endgame.

If you want to see how Isaac compares to the other Corrupted Gate bosses in difficulty and reward, our guides on Droeg the Conqueror and the Hexapod cover the other two Mammon bosses in detail.

    Isaac the Scholar Prince Lore

Before the fight, NPC Ruk stands near the boss arena entrance and gives you a short piece of backstory. Isaac was a prince — the Scholar-Prince — who fell ill. Ruk and the Scholars of Marrow Keep attempted to treat him. The treatment went badly and mutated Isaac into the creature you encounter in the Ashen Sanctum. What you are fighting is not a monster by nature. He is a person the Scholars’ experiments broke. That context makes the fight land a bit differently once you know it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Isaac the Scholar Prince in Mortal Shell 2?

Isaac the Scholar Prince is located inside the Ashen Sanctum, which is a sub-area within the Faded Citadel dungeon in the Ruins of Mammon region. To reach him, you need to clear the Faded Citadel dungeon, defeat the Servants of the Scholar-Prince mini-boss, activate the Citadel Atrium Beacon, and then continue deeper into the area until you reach the boss arena. He is the final boss of the Faded Citadel gate.

How do I skip Phase 2 of the Isaac fight?

When Isaac drops to roughly 50% health, he falls to his knees. If you perform a Riposte at that moment, his shield gets torn off and Phase 2 begins. To skip Phase 2, avoid doing the Riposte when he kneels. Instead, hit him only with heavy attacks or only strike him from behind while he is down. He will keep his shield and continue using the same Phase 1 attack patterns for the rest of the fight.

What do you get for beating Isaac the Scholar Prince?

Defeating Isaac rewards you with the Scholar’s Wormstone Tarstone, which is a special upgrade for the Clockwork Scythe. It gradually drains your Resolve to keep the saw mechanism running and empowers every attack while it spins. You also receive a solid amount of Gloom and trigger the beacon spawn containing an Ova, which is required to unlock the game’s final dungeon, the Unfound Path.

What is the best shell to use against Isaac the Scholar Prince?

Tiel is widely considered the best shell for this fight. Tiel’s Shadow Dodge ability lets you execute near-perfect dodges on most of Isaac’s attacks, including his aerial swings, and follow up immediately with a Shadow Strike before he can react. If you prefer a more defensive approach, any shell with good stamina management and parry timing works — Isaac’s Phase 1 attacks are fully parryable and have readable patterns after a couple of attempts.
