TL;DR
- Malborn Offspring is one of three tendril guardians in the Unfound Path and is widely considered the hardest of them.
- It has two full health bars, not a single bar with two phases like other bosses.
- No spirit summon is available for this fight — you are on your own.
- Its Cleaving Combos chain five to six hits with unpredictable timing — do not try to parry everything.
- When Phase 2 begins, its sword gains Lightning damage. Equip the Galvanic Shard before it stands back up.
- The Week 1 Patch fixed a bug where Malborn Offspring would interrupt its own sword throw — it now reliably picks its sword back up after throwing it.
- Known issue: there is a possible bug when using the Grisha Remnant Summon during this fight. Avoid it until a fix is confirmed.
- Sester Genessa with fully upgraded Faithful Doubles is the strongest option for this fight.
- Reward is the Offspring Trophy, which sells to the Marrow Keep merchant for 5,000 coins.
Malborn Offspring Boss Guide Mortal Shell 2
Malborn Offspring is one of the most punishing fights in Mortal Shell 2. It sits in the Unfound Path — the game’s final dungeon — and guards one of the three tendrils blocking access to the central platform and the final boss. Unlike every other major boss in the game, Malborn Offspring has two completely separate health bars. You have to bring it down twice. And there is no spirit summon available for this fight, so you are handling all of it alone. This guide has been updated to reflect the Day One Patch and the Week 1 Patch (August 29, 2026).
If you are working through the Unfound Path and trying to decide which tendril guardian to tackle first, save Malborn Offspring for last. Clear Orrem and The Monolith first to get your upgrades and Gloom topped up before stepping into this arena. If you need a refresher on how progression works across the game’s bosses before this point, our Mortal Shell 2 all boss list has the full picture, and our Mortal Shell 2 beginner’s guide covers the fundamentals if you are still finding your footing.
Where to Find Malborn Offspring in Mortal Shell 2
Malborn Offspring is located in the Faithful’s Shelter area of the Unfound Path. To reach it, start from the Faithful’s Shelter Beacon. From there, head up the stairs and continue along the path. You will come to a narrow stone bridge — cross it and follow the path on the other side. The Malborn Offspring stands alone in an open arena at the end of this route.
The Unfound Path only becomes accessible after you have gathered enough Ova from the six Corrupted Gate dungeons across Fainweald and Mammon. Each Corrupted Gate boss you defeat spawns a Beacon containing Ova. You need all six to open the Unfound Path. If you haven’t finished all the gate bosses yet, our guide on Isaac the Scholar Prince covers the last of the six Corrupted Gate encounters you will likely face before this point.
Malborn Offspring Boss Overview
- Location: Faithful’s Shelter, Unfound Path
- Health Bars: Two full health bars (not a single bar with two phases)
- Spirit Summon: None available
- Reward: Offspring Trophy (trade item, sells for 5,000 coins)
- Lightning Damage: Phase 2 only — equip the Galvanic Shard
- Difficulty: Hardest of the three Unfound Path tendril guardians
- Known issue: There is a possible bug when using the Grisha Remnant Summon during this fight. Avoid using it in this arena until a fix is confirmed.
What makes this boss different from every other major fight in the game is the two health bars. When you drain the first bar, Malborn Offspring goes down and slowly gets back up for Phase 2 with a full second health bar. That means the fight lasts roughly twice as long as any other major boss encounter — and its attack patterns become more dangerous in the second half. Conserve your healing flasks during Phase 1 so you have resources left for Phase 2. Note that Malborn Offspring was buffed in the Day One Patch alongside Hexapod, Orrem, and Droeg — if you played the Open Beta and found the fight manageable, expect a harder version in the retail build.
How to Prepare for the Malborn Offspring Fight
Before you go in, make sure your build is as strong as possible. This is a late-game boss and it punishes you hard for going in underprepared.
- Upgrade your Shell and Harbinger: Spend all accumulated Gloom before this fight. More health and damage make both phases more manageable. This is not a fight to save your Gloom for later.
- Galvanic Shard: You don’t need it in Phase 1, but the moment Phase 2 starts, Malborn Offspring’s sword gains Lightning damage. Slot the Galvanic Shard into your passive item slot as soon as it goes down between phases. This reduces the incoming Lightning damage significantly and makes Phase 2 survivable.
- Shell choice: Tiel and Sester Genessa are both strong options here. Tiel’s Shadow Dodge lets you turn invisible and punish from behind, which is excellent given how aggressive this boss’s combos are. Genessa with fully upgraded Faithful Doubles is arguably the strongest option — more on that below.
- Best weapons: The Veteran’s Battle Axe works well because its heavy attack does a quick two-hit spin that deals decent damage and also helps recover Resolve. Any well-upgraded primary weapon is fine — focus on what you are most comfortable using. Check our best weapons guide if you are still deciding.
- Tarstones: Apply a Tarstone element to your weapon before going in. Fire and other damage-over-time effects stack up well here because of how long the fight runs. See our best Tarstones for beginners guide for options. Tarcores and Glimpses are no longer finite after the Week 1 Patch, so any Tarstone investment you made on the path to this fight should feel less constrained than at launch.
- No summon: There is no spirit summon for this fight. Unlike earlier boss encounters, you cannot spend a Glimpse to call in a Shell ally. Everything depends on your own build and execution. Note that the Week 1 Patch flagged a possible bug when using the Grisha Remnant Summon (the Permanent Pickup item) during this fight — avoid bringing it in until that is resolved.

Malborn Offspring Phase 1 Strategy
Phase 1 is the more manageable of the two halves, but don’t take it lightly. Malborn Offspring attacks quickly and chains long combos that are hard to read until you have seen them a few times.
Its primary attack pattern is a Cleaving Combo — five to six hits strung together with uneven timing. Some lunges follow almost without pause. Before others, it deliberately freezes for a beat before swinging. That changing tempo is what makes this boss feel unpredictable. If you try to parry the full string, you will likely eat two or three hits mid-combo. It is safer to dodge through the sequence and punish the recovery than to fish for parries on every swing.
Parrying is still possible — and if you are very skilled at it, it is one of the most effective approaches in this fight. But only parry the attacks you have already seen and know the timing on. Blind parry attempts on Malborn Offspring’s combos will cost you a lot of health. Watch a full combo or two before committing to blocking anything. When a successful parry opens a Riposte, trigger it with a light attack — since the Day One Patch, heavy attacks no longer open a Riposte. The Week 1 Patch also improved the Riposte system overall: damage now scales with enemy health (so Ripostes stay strong throughout both health bars), iFrames last the full animation, and recovery is faster — making each successful parry more rewarding than at launch.
When Malborn Offspring’s Break meter fills, you can step in for a Riposte and deal a big chunk of damage. Build that meter steadily — parrying ground attacks and landing clean hits after dodges both contribute to it. Once you trigger a stagger, go in immediately and deal as much damage as you can before it recovers.
At around half health within Phase 1, it becomes more aggressive. It uses more unparryable attacks and the combo strings get more erratic. Stick to the same core approach: dodge the sequence, punish the recovery, and retreat. Don’t overstay your welcome after landing two or three hits.
Key Phase 1 habits:
- Watch at least one full combo before trying to parry anything.
- Dodge first, punish after — don’t try to interrupt combos mid-string.
- Build the Break meter steadily rather than going for risky parries. When you do land a Riposte, use a light attack.
- Save healing flasks where you can. You need resources for Phase 2.
Phase 1 Notable Attacks
- Cleaving Combo: The main attack — five to six sword swings with deliberately shifting timing. Some swings follow fast, others have a deliberate pause before landing. Dodge the full string and punish on recovery. Do not try to interrupt between lunges.
- Sword Throw: Malborn Offspring hurls its sword at you from a distance. The Week 1 Patch fixed a bug where it would interrupt this throw mid-animation and fail to pick the sword back up — it now reliably completes the throw and retrieves the sword. Dodge sideways when you see the throw wind-up and close the gap while it is briefly unarmed.
- Unparryable Rush Stab: It launches straight at you without much warning. No red indicator in some cases. Dodge to the side when you see it lower its body and charge forward.
- Downward Swing: A single big overhead slash. Dodge to the side when it lifts the sword high.
- Wide Horizontal Swing: A wide sweeping slash from one side. Dodge backward to get clear of the full arc.
- Grab Attacks: These are the most dangerous attacks in the fight. If you get grabbed, it can instantly kill you unless you are in one of the heavier-armored Shells. Watch for the grab animation carefully and dodge fast.
Between Phases — What to Do When Malborn Offspring Goes Down
When you drain the first health bar, Malborn Offspring drops to the ground and slowly begins to stand back up. This is not the end of the fight — it is just the transition into Phase 2.
You have a window here to keep dealing damage while it is getting up. Rush in immediately and land as many hits as you can during the resurrection animation. Every bit of health you chip off during this window is health you don’t have to fight for in Phase 2.
Critically — slot in the Galvanic Shard right now. As soon as Malborn Offspring starts rising, open your item menu and equip the Galvanic Shard in your passive slot. Phase 2 adds Lightning damage to all of its attacks. Without the Galvanic Shard, Phase 2 hits noticeably harder. With it, the Lightning damage becomes much more manageable.
Also be aware: when the Lightning effect activates to revive it, standing too close deals damage to you from the electrical burst. Back off slightly as it completes the animation, then re-engage immediately.
Malborn Offspring Phase 2 Strategy
Phase 2 is where a lot of players start struggling. Malborn Offspring has a completely fresh health bar and every attack now deals Lightning damage on top of its normal output. It also becomes faster and more aggressive, and it begins throwing electric projectiles at range — a new tool it didn’t have in Phase 1.
The core approach stays the same: dodge the combo, punish the recovery, retreat. But the stakes are higher now because the grab attacks get more frequent, the combos feel slightly faster, and one mistimed dodge on a grab can end the run outright.
Despite the Lightning effect on its sword, the AoE it creates when striking the ground only actually deals Lightning damage if the sword hits you directly. The ground effect itself is not the biggest threat. Stay mobile, avoid the sword, and you won’t eat as much Lightning damage as you might fear.
Dodging to the side of Malborn Offspring is the best positioning in Phase 2. Getting around to its side or back during and after combos lets you land hits from a safer angle and avoids the forward reach of its longer swings.
Key Phase 2 habits:
- Galvanic Shard must be equipped — swap it in during the transition if you haven’t already.
- Same dodge-and-punish loop from Phase 1, but be even more selective about when you attack.
- Watch for grab attacks — they become more frequent here and can one-shot you at low health.
- Use ranged sidearm shots during the electric projectile phases to stay safe and deal damage from distance.
- Stay mobile. Standing still for too long invites a grab or a fast projectile.
Phase 2 Notable Attacks
- Lightning Cleaving Combo: Same five to six hit string as Phase 1 but now infused with Lightning. The timing is slightly faster and the shifting rhythm becomes harder to read. Dodge the full combo.
- Electric Projectiles: A new ranged attack in Phase 2. Malborn Offspring throws electric bolts at you from a distance. Dodge to one side to avoid them and use the opportunity to close the gap or fire back with your sidearm.
- Grab Attacks (more frequent): These appear more often in Phase 2. They can instantly kill you unless you are in a heavily armored Shell. Prioritise dodging these above everything else in this phase.
- Unparryable Charges: Still present from Phase 1. Sidestep when you see the lowered body stance.
Best Shell for Malborn Offspring
Sester Genessa (Strongest Option)
Sester Genessa with Faithful Doubles fully upgraded across the first column is widely regarded as the most effective choice for this fight. The Faithful Doubles ability summons clones that attack and distract the nearest enemy. With the first column maxed out, the clones deal more damage, last longer, and inflict Stasis on Malborn Offspring when it strikes them — which causes it to stun itself.
The approach with Genessa looks like this: spam all five Doubles at the boss. The first couple will Stasis it. Rush in during the stun, land a two-hit spin with the Veteran’s Battle Axe or a short combo with your preferred weapon to recover your Resolve, then back off. The Doubles do the heavy lifting while you manage your Resolve and stay safe. Repeat for both phases. This method can cut through both health bars much faster than trying to fight Malborn Offspring head-on.
If you die as Genessa during Phase 2, the Stray Sester form has a faster dodge and a Tier 4 skill that makes a Stray Double absorb a fatal blow — which also stuns the boss. It won’t protect against grabs though, so stay alert even in this form.
Tiel
Tiel’s Shadow Dodge lets you turn invisible on a successful dodge and follow up with a Shadow Strike from behind. This is excellent for punishing Malborn Offspring’s combo recoveries safely. At Tier 4, Tiel also leaves behind Shadow Clones when dashing, which distract the boss and give you extra windows to deal damage. If you have been using Tiel throughout the game and are comfortable with the Shadow Dodge timing, this is a very solid choice here.
Heavy Armored Shells (Eredrim, Harros)
If grab attacks are killing you repeatedly, switching to a heavier armored Shell can help you survive them instead of dying outright. The tradeoff is slower movement, which makes dodging the Lightning combos in Phase 2 harder. But if staying alive through grabs is your main problem, the extra armor gives you more room to recover. Check our best shells guide for a full breakdown.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Trying to parry every hit of the Cleaving Combo. You can only reliably parry individual hits, not the full five or six hit string. Dodge the combo and punish the recovery instead. When you do land a Riposte, use a light attack — heavy attacks no longer open Ripostes since the Day One Patch.
- Forgetting to equip the Galvanic Shard between phases. This is the most common mistake players make when they first reach Phase 2. Open your item menu the moment Malborn Offspring drops and swap it in before it stands back up.
- Spending all healing flasks in Phase 1. If you go into Phase 2 with no heals left, a single bad dodge can end the run. Manage your resources carefully across both phases.
- Getting too aggressive after a Riposte. Malborn Offspring recovers quickly. Land a few hits and back off rather than trying to chain too many attacks.
- Standing still during Phase 2 projectiles. The electric projectiles in Phase 2 are easy to dodge when you are moving, but they will punish you hard if you are standing still. Keep moving at all times.
- Not rolling at the right timing on the delayed combo hits. The shifting rhythm of the Cleaving Combo is designed to trick you into dodging early. Watch the animation fully before committing.
- Using the Grisha Remnant Summon in this fight. The Week 1 Patch identified a possible bug when using this Permanent Pickup item during the Malborn Offspring encounter. Avoid it in this arena until a fix is confirmed.
- Tackling this boss first in the Unfound Path. Save Malborn Offspring for last. Clear Orrem and The Monolith first to bank more Gloom and get confident with the dungeon’s difficulty before taking on the hardest of the three guardians.
Malborn Offspring Rewards
Defeating Malborn Offspring gives you the Offspring Trophy. This is a trade item — it has no passive or active use. Take it to the merchant at Marrow Keep and sell it for 5,000 coins. That is a solid payout that can go toward purchasing items, upgrades, or anything else you still need before the final boss.
Clearing Malborn Offspring also destroys one of the three tendrils blocking the central platform of the Unfound Path. Once all three are gone — Orrem, The Monolith, and Malborn Offspring all defeated — the platform becomes accessible and you can face Zmey the Unbidden, the final boss of Mortal Shell 2.
Before stepping onto that platform, visit the Hidden Nave Beacon if you haven’t already. It contains the Endless Core, the final Tarforge upgrade that removes the upgrade cap from your primary and secondary weapons. Getting that before the final boss makes a real difference. Our Tarforge guide has everything you need on upgrades.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Malborn Offspring in Mortal Shell 2?
Malborn Offspring is located in the Faithful’s Shelter section of the Unfound Path, the game’s final dungeon. From the Faithful’s Shelter Beacon, go up the stairs, cross the narrow stone bridge, and follow the path to the boss arena. The Unfound Path only unlocks after you have collected enough Ova from all six Corrupted Gate bosses across Fainweald and Mammon.
How many health bars does Malborn Offspring have?
Malborn Offspring has two full, separate health bars. This makes it unique among all the major bosses in Mortal Shell 2 — every other boss uses a single health bar split into phases. With Malborn Offspring, you have to bring it down twice. When the first bar empties, it falls, slowly gets back up, and the second full bar begins. The fight is effectively double the length of any other major boss encounter. Note that Malborn Offspring was buffed in the Day One Patch, so if you encountered a different version during the Open Beta, expect it to be tougher in the current retail build.
What is the best shell to use against Malborn Offspring?
Sester Genessa with fully upgraded Faithful Doubles across the first ability column is the strongest option. The clones distract and Stasis the boss, letting you deal damage safely while it is stunned. Tiel is also excellent thanks to the Shadow Dodge and Shadow Strike combo, which lets you punish from behind after successfully dodging a combo. If grab attacks are killing you, switching to a heavier armored Shell like Eredrim or Harros helps you survive them instead of dying outright.
What does Malborn Offspring drop?
Defeating Malborn Offspring rewards you with the Offspring Trophy. It is a trade item with no direct combat use. Sell it to the merchant at Marrow Keep for 5,000 coins. Beyond the trophy, defeating this boss destroys one of the three tendrils in the Unfound Path — clearing all three opens the central platform and the path to Zmey the Unbidden, the final boss of the game.
