    TL;DR

    • The Nameless Captive is the boss at the end of Prisoner’s Domain in Fainweald.
    • Start from the Executioner’s Pulpit Beacon, beat Tishina’s Confessor, then drop into the pit.
    • Summon Eredrim before the fight — he pulls aggro and creates free attack windows.
    • Most attacks are parryable. Learn the combo timing and punish after the last hit.
    • The Propeller Spin is unblockable — run away the moment you see it start.
    • Beating him rewards the Captive’s Scabstone for the Great Martyr’s Blade.
    • There’s a hidden trophy tied to this boss — Peter’s Perfect Parry.

The Nameless Captive boss in Mortal Shell 2 is the third major gate boss you’ll likely face in Fainweald. He’s locked at the bottom of a massive pit in the Prisoner’s Domain — a giant armless man with a massive sword cleaved straight through his skull, held together by bands of flesh that grew around it. He tears his own stumped arms off just before the fight starts. It sets the tone perfectly.

This is one of the most classic soulslike fights in the game. No ranged tricks, no weird gimmicks. Just a big enemy with long, punishing combos and a sword that reaches further than you’d expect. If you’re still working through the early gates, check out our guide on how to beat The Lost Child — that’s the boss right before this one in the recommended order. For the full picture of what’s ahead, our Mortal Shell 2 all boss list covers every major encounter.

Here’s everything you need to know to beat the Nameless Captive without burning all your flasks.

Where to Find the Nameless Captive in Mortal Shell 2

The Nameless Captive is found deep inside the Prisoner’s Domain — the northwest Corrupted Gate in the Fainweald region. Before you can access this gate, you first need to cleanse the Nochtean Gate beacon in the Ruins of Nochte area, which unlocks the entrance to Prisoner’s Domain.

Here’s the path to reach him:

    • Enter the Prisoner’s Domain through its Corrupted Gate.
    • Work your way through the dungeon, activating beacons as you go.
    • Reach the Executioner’s Pulpit Beacon — this is your last respawn point before the boss.
    • From there, continue along the main route and defeat Tishina’s Confessor (a mini-boss enemy blocking the way).
    • After the Confessor falls, follow the route until you reach a large pit.
    • Drop into the pit. The boss arena is at the bottom.

Tip: Before dropping into the pit, make sure to use a Glimpse to permanently summon Eredrim as your spirit ally for this fight. He’s available just before the arena and makes a real difference by pulling the boss’s attention away from you. If you’re unsure about managing your resources efficiently before this fight, our Mortal Shell 2 beginner’s guide covers the basics well.

The Nameless Captive – Overview and Lore

The Nameless Captive was a prisoner held chained in the depths of a massive pit — a keep was essentially built around and above him just to contain him. His arms were bound to either side until he ripped them off to break free. A huge blade was driven through the top of his skull, splitting his head in two. Over time, bands of flesh grew around the blade, fusing it into him. Now that blade is his weapon.

He has no arms left. He uses headbutts, skull swings, and stomps. The sword moves wherever his head moves. It’s a brutal visual design — and the hitboxes are just as brutal. That sword has longer reach than it looks, so keep that in mind throughout the fight.

The Nameless Captive – All Attacks Explained

This is primarily a melee fight. He doesn’t have ranged moves or environmental tricks. Everything comes down to reading his weapon swings and knowing when to block, parry, or run.

Slash Combo (Sword Stab / Horizontal Swings)

This is his bread-and-butter attack. The Nameless Captive swings the blade embedded in his skull in long horizontal arcs. These can be chained together four or five times in a row. Most hits in this combo are parryable, which makes it the best attack to practice countering. The key is not to counter too early — wait for the full combo string to end before retaliating. If you’re still shaky on parrying, read our guide on how to parry in Mortal Shell 2 before this fight.

The reach on these swings is longer than it looks. Players frequently take damage thinking they’re at a safe distance. If you’re outside what seems like range, take a step back anyway.

    Vertical Stab

The Nameless Captive bends back, lifts the sword upward, then plunges it straight into the ground in a stabbing motion. This has a long windup — you have time to decide whether to parry or dodge. Both work. It’s also parryable, and the windup gives you a comfortable reaction window compared to the slash combos.

Watch out for the follow-through. Once the blade tip is lodged in the ground, he wrenches it back out — and that upward motion on the way out can also hit you if you move in too early. Wait for the full animation before punishing.

This stab can also be chained into combos, and when chained, the individual hits come out faster. React to the first stab, but stay cautious about the follow-ups.

Propeller Spin (Violent Swing) – Most Dangerous Attack

This is the one that will down you if you’re not ready for it. The Nameless Captive spins his head rapidly, turning the embedded sword into a spinning blade that covers a wide area around him — like a helicopter rotor at head height. If you get caught in this, it hits multiple times and deals massive damage fast.

The moment you see him start spinning, run away and create as much space as possible. Don’t try to block or parry this one. Just get out. Wait for him to stop fully before coming back in. According to some players, a well-timed Special Attack can interrupt this spin and knock him out of it — if you have the Resolve available, that’s worth trying. But running is the safer play if you’re unsure.

After he stops the Propeller Spin, there’s a brief recovery window. That’s your punishment window — move back in quickly for two or three hits, then back off before his next attack starts.

    Aerial Slam (Jump Attack)

The Nameless Captive leaps into the air and tries to come down on top of you with his full body weight. Watch for him to leave the ground. When he’s at the peak of the jump, dodge sideways — not backward. Dodging sideways gets you out from under the slam cleanly. Dodging backward tends to leave you in the landing zone.

After the slam lands, he’s briefly stationary. Go in for a punish.

    Stomp and Kick

Since he has no arms, stomps and kicks fill in as close-range options. These come out when you’re right in front of him and he doesn’t have space for a full sword swing. Kicks are usually chained twice. They have decent reach but are slower than the sword attacks. You can dodge through them or block them — they’re not particularly threatening once you know they’re coming. Just don’t get surprised by a quick double kick after a parried sword combo.

Best Strategy to Beat the Nameless Captive in Mortal Shell 2

This is one of the most parry-friendly boss fights in the game. If you’ve been practicing parrying, this is where it pays off. If you prefer dodging, that works fine too — just adjust the strategy slightly.

    Summon Eredrim First

Before entering the pit, spend a Glimpse to unlock Eredrim as your summon. He pulls the Nameless Captive’s attention, which does two things: it gives you safe windows to attack from the side while the boss is focused on Eredrim, and it reduces how often you need to react to attacks yourself. Use these windows to coat your weapon with Stasis if you have it — slowing the boss makes his combos much more readable.

    Learn the Combo Endings

The Nameless Captive’s combos are long but they do end. The single biggest mistake players make is trying to attack after the first or second swing. His strings run four or five hits. Attack too early and you’ll eat the third or fourth swing that you didn’t see coming.

Watch the full combo play out. When it ends, step in and land two or three hits. Then back off and reset. It feels slow at first, but the rhythm becomes clear within a few attempts.

    Parry Build: Best Output

If you’re running a parry-focused approach, this boss rewards you. Most of his attacks — the slash combos and the vertical stab — are parryable. Landing consistent parries builds up his stagger bar. When it breaks, go in for a Riposte strike.

One thing to know: after a Riposte lands, he almost always follows up with the Propeller Spin. The moment the Riposte animation ends, back off immediately. Don’t try to squeeze in another hit. You will walk into the spin every time if you stay close.

Dodge Build: Stay to the Side

If you’re playing Tiel or a shell that relies on dodging rather than parrying, the approach is similar but you’re dodging through combos instead of parrying them. Tiel’s perfect dodge into Shadow Strike works well here — successful dodges send you invisible and let you answer with an empowered hit. Genessa is also a strong pick. Her doubles distract the boss and create extra attack windows while you heal or reposition.

Regardless of which shell you’re using, check our best shells for beginners in Mortal Shell 2 guide if you want a breakdown of which options suit different playstyles.

Watch the Reach on Every Attack

The sword swings have longer range than they look. Several players report taking damage from what appeared to be a miss. Give yourself more space than feels necessary, especially when watching a combo finish. Being slightly out of range for a punish is always better than being slightly in range of a follow-up hit you didn’t see coming.

    Upgrade Before You Go

If the Nameless Captive is hitting too hard, head back to Marrow Keep. Upgrade your weapon, check your Tarstones, and make sure your Shell’s bond level is up. Our guides on best weapons for beginners and best tarstones for beginners can help you pick the right setup. Also visit the Tarforge if you haven’t — our Tarforge guide explains what upgrades are available there.

Hidden Trophy – Peter’s Perfect Parry

There’s a secret trophy or achievement tied specifically to the Nameless Captive fight: Peter’s Perfect Parry. This is one of the few missable trophies in the game. It’s linked to performing a perfect parry during this boss fight, so if you’re going for the Platinum or full achievement list, make sure to attempt it during this encounter. You can’t come back and redo it later without starting a new playthrough.

    The Nameless Captive – Rewards

Defeating the Nameless Captive gives you:

    • Captive’s Scabstone – A Tarstone that works with the Great Martyr’s Blade. It costs 100 Resolve to activate, letting you swing your weapon in a wide violent arc that strikes all enemies close to you. It’s a strong crowd-control option and suits the close-quarters style of fighting that the Prisoner’s Domain demands.
    • Gloom – Standard Harbinger upgrade currency.
    • Ovum – Earned after cleansing the beacon that appears post-fight. This is one of the fruit items needed to unlock the final area of the game.

The Captive’s Scabstone pairs especially well with the Great Martyr’s Blade if you’ve been building around heavy weapons. If you’re still looking for your main weapon, our Mortal Shell 2 all weapon and sidearm locations guide can help you track down anything you might have missed.

What Comes After the Nameless Captive?

Once the fight ends and you cleanse the beacon, you earn an Ovum and return to Marrow Keep automatically. At this point, three of the six Fainweald gates are done. The remaining three are in the Ruins of Mammon — a separate region with its own gates, bosses, and Ovum to collect.

Before heading into Mammon, it’s worth going back to Marrow Keep and spending time at the upgrade stations. Quick Tips Summary

    • Summon Eredrim before entering the pit.
    • Let the full combo end before attacking — don’t rush in early.
    • Run away immediately when the Propeller Spin starts.
    • After a Riposte, back off — the Propeller Spin almost always follows.
    • Dodge sideways on the jump attack, not backward.
    • Go for the parry trophy — Peter’s Perfect Parry is missable.
    • Watch the sword reach — it extends further than it visually appears.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Nameless Captive in Mortal Shell 2?

The Nameless Captive is found at the bottom of a pit at the end of the Prisoner’s Domain — the northwest Corrupted Gate in Fainweald. You need to reach the Executioner’s Pulpit Beacon, defeat Tishina’s Confessor, and then drop into the pit to enter the boss arena.

Can you parry the Nameless Captive in Mortal Shell 2?

Yes. Most of his attacks are parryable, including both the slash combos and the vertical stab. The Propeller Spin is the main exception — it cannot be blocked or parried safely. Run away from that one. There’s even a hidden trophy called Peter’s Perfect Parry that you can earn during this specific fight.

What does the Nameless Captive drop in Mortal Shell 2?

He drops the Captive’s Scabstone Tarstone, which works with the Great Martyr’s Blade. For 100 Resolve, it lets you swing in a wide arc hitting all nearby enemies. You also earn Gloom and an Ovum after cleansing the beacon that appears once the fight ends.

What is the best Shell to use against the Nameless Captive?

Eredrim is the recommended summon for this fight (spend a Glimpse before the arena). For your shell, Tiel works well — his perfect dodges trigger Shadow Strike for bonus damage. Genessa is a strong alternative; her doubles distract the boss and create extra openings to heal or attack safely. Either pairing with the Eredrim summon makes the fight very manageable.

Mortal Shell 2 is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Visit the official Mortal Shell website for more details.
