Knowing how to get Glimpses in Mortal Shell 2 is one of the most important things you can understand before you start spending them. Glimpse is the rarest currency in the game. It does not drop from regular enemies, it cannot be farmed in a loop, and every single one in the world is a one-time pickup. Once you spend it on a Shell’s Bond Tier, it is gone for good. A single playthrough gives you roughly 90 Glimpses — barely enough to fully bond two or three Shells — so every one you find matters. This guide covers every source of Glimpse in the game, what to prioritize, what to avoid spending it on, and how to get the most out of what you have. For a full breakdown of how Glimpse works inside the Shell Bond system once you have collected it, see our Shell Bond and Glimpse guide, and check our Mortal Shell 2 beginner’s guide to understand the full progression picture.
TL;DR – How to Get Glimpses in Mortal Shell 2
- Glimpse is a finite, one-time resource. It does not drop from regular enemies and cannot be farmed in a loop.
- One playthrough gives roughly 90 Glimpses — enough to fully bond two to three Shells. Fully bonding all eight requires 216 total across multiple playthroughs.
- Primary sources: Cleansing Beacons (most common early source), Corrupted Gates (multiple Glimpses each), major boss fights, and world chests in hidden areas and dungeons.
- Merchant source: Buy one Glimpse from Merrick in Marrow Keep for 500 Gold after unlocking his shop.
- NPC source: The Grisha Pup questline in Mushroom Village rewards Glimpse. Return to NPCs after boss kills and major events — some reward Glimpse through dialogue.
- Boss summon cost: Most major boss fog gates have a Spirit Summon shrine that lets you call a Shell ally for 1 Glimpse per attempt. Avoid using this unless you are truly stuck — it burns Glimpse fast.
- Balance Patch 1 refund: If you spent Glimpse on Shell map markers before the patch, collect your refund from the Shell Keeper alcove in Blackmarrow.
- New Game Plus resets all world Glimpse sources, giving you another full sweep. This is the only way to get more Glimpses once the current playthrough’s sources are exhausted.

What Is Glimpse and What Does It Do?
Glimpse is one of four currencies in Mortal Shell 2, alongside Gloom, Shell Points, and Gold. Unlike the others, it has one job only: raising a Shell’s Bond Tier from I to IV at Zhirelle the Shellkeeper in Marrow Keep. Each Bond Tier you raise unlocks the next row of that Shell’s passive ability tree, increases its Shell Revive Efficiency, improves its health on revive, and unlocks Memories — the short story sequences tied to that Shell’s backstory.
Spending Glimpse is permanent and non-refundable. Shell Points, the currency you use to activate individual passives within a tier, can be respecced for free at any Beacon. Glimpse cannot. Once a Bond Tier is paid for, that Glimpse is spent regardless of whether you keep using that Shell. This makes Glimpse the most consequential resource you manage in the entire game. Do not confuse it with Gloom, Shell Points, or Gold — they are all separate systems. For the exact cost breakdown of each Bond Tier and what each one unlocks, see our Shell Bond and Glimpse guide.
How Much Glimpse Can You Get Per Playthrough?
Community reports from launch consistently put the total Glimpse available in one playthrough at around 90. Fully bonding one Shell to Bond Tier IV costs 27 Glimpses. That means a single run gives you enough to fully bond about two to three Shells, with a little left over depending on how thoroughly you explore.
Fully bonding all eight Shells requires 216 Glimpses total, which means at least two full playthroughs and part of a third at a minimum. New Game Plus resets all world Glimpse sources — Beacons, Gates, chests, and bosses all award Glimpse again — so you continue bonding the remaining Shells across cycles. See our New Game Plus guide for exactly what carries over and what resets between runs.
How to Get Glimpses in Mortal Shell 2 – All Sources
1. Cleansing Beacons
Beacons are the most consistent and most important source of Glimpse throughout the game. Almost every Beacon you cleanse in the overworld has a Glimpse either directly inside it or nearby in the area outside it once cleansed. This is your primary Glimpse income during normal story progression.
The very first Glimpse most players find is inside the Widow’s Overlook Beacon, the first Beacon in Fainweald. From there, every other Beacon you cleanse adds to your pool. GameSpot’s early-game walkthrough confirms that cleansing Blackridge Pass, Mushroom Village, and Mushroom Village Gate each reward one Glimpse alongside Ova and coins. Cleansing Beacons in the right order and thoroughly exploring each Beacon dungeon rather than rushing through is the single most effective way to maximize your Glimpse income per region.
Make sure you cleanse every Beacon you find. Missing a Beacon means missing a potential Glimpse permanently for that playthrough. Use our all Beacon locations guide to make sure you do not skip any.
2. Corrupted Gates
Corrupted Gates are the game’s major dungeon areas, larger than standard Beacon dungeons and containing multiple Glimpses each. Each Gate typically contains several Glimpse pickups spread throughout its rooms and corridors, plus the Glimpse reward from cleansing the Gate itself.
These are some of the largest single-session Glimpse payouts in the game. Thoroughly searching every room in a Corrupted Gate — rather than following the critical path and exiting — is essential. The Glutted Mire, for example, has multiple Glimpses off the main route that most players miss on a first run.
Corrupted Gates are gated behind collecting a minimum number of Ova. Make sure you are regularly depositing Ova at the Ova chamber in Marrow Keep so you do not fall behind on Gate access. Each Gate you clear is a significant Glimpse contribution to your run.
3. Major Boss Fights
Every major story boss — including those at the end of Corrupted Gates — rewards Glimpse on defeat. This is in addition to the Ability Tarstone and other drops they give. Boss Glimpse rewards are some of the largest single-source payouts outside of full Gate clears, making it important to fight bosses promptly rather than delaying them indefinitely.
Minibosses scattered through the overworld also sometimes reward Glimpse, particularly the named minibosses guarding dungeon entrances or blocking paths in Fainweald and the Ruins of Mammon. Always check the reward screen after defeating a named enemy — a Glimpse earned in the field is one you did not have to find in a chest. For a full list of which bosses drop which rewards, see our all boss list.
4. World Chests and Hidden Areas
Beyond Beacons and Gates, Glimpses are scattered through fixed chests across the open world. These are less common than the Beacon and Gate sources but exist in hidden areas, dungeons, and off-path zones that reward thorough exploration. Breakable walls, unmarked dungeons, and optional areas that branch off the main route are the most likely places to find a stray Glimpse chest.
The key word is fixed. These chests do not respawn between rest cycles. Once you pick up a world Glimpse, it is gone until New Game Plus. There is no way to know without visiting each location whether a chest contained one. Thorough exploration of every area — not just following the critical path — is the only way to collect them all.
5. Merrick the Merchant
Merrick in Marrow Keep sells one Glimpse for 500 Gold through his Rare Findings tab. His shop is locked on your first visit to Marrow Keep. Fast travel anywhere on the map and return to unlock it. This single Glimpse purchase is reliable and worth buying, especially if you are one Glimpse short of the next Bond Tier on your main Shell.
It is only one purchase and 500 Gold is very affordable by the mid-game, so this is not a meaningful Glimpse source in terms of volume — but it can be a useful top-up at critical moments. Do not waste time farming Gold just to buy this Glimpse early; acquire it naturally as your gold income grows. Check Merrick’s Rare Findings tab every time you return to Marrow Keep — his stock may expand with game progression.
6. NPC Questlines and Interactions
Certain NPC interactions and completed questlines reward Glimpse. The Grisha Pup in Mushroom Village is a confirmed example — interacting with the pup and its mother can yield a few coins or Glimpses as a reward from the interaction. This is a small but meaningful source that many players miss entirely because it does not look like a traditional quest.
The general rule for NPC Glimpse rewards is: exhaust every NPC’s dialogue after every major story event, boss kill, and Corrupted Gate clear. Several NPCs change what they say and what they offer after progression milestones. Returning to Marrow Keep and talking to all residents after clearing a boss or region is the safest way to avoid missing dialogue-gated Glimpse rewards. This is a standard Soulslike practice that Mortal Shell 2 carries forward.
7. Spirit Summon Shrines — Avoid When Possible
At the fog gate of most major boss arenas, there is a Spirit Summon shrine. Activating it lets you call a spectral Shell warrior to fight alongside you during the boss encounter. The cost is 1 Glimpse per attempt. If you wipe and try again, you spend another Glimpse for the next summon.
This is technically a Glimpse source in reverse — it is a Glimpse sink, not a source. We include it here because many players accidentally spend Glimpse on summons without realizing how scarce the currency is. Our strong recommendation: avoid using Spirit Summons unless you are genuinely stuck on a boss after multiple attempts with a fully upgraded build. A single failed boss attempt with a summon costs a Glimpse that could have gone toward your Shell’s Bond Tier. For boss strategy that does not cost Glimpse, see the individual boss guides listed in our all boss list.
The Balance Patch 1 Glimpse Refund
Before Balance Patch 1, asking Zhirelle to reveal a Shell’s map location cost Glimpse — typically between 3 and 5 per Shell. Cold Symmetry changed this in Balance Patch 1, moving Shell location reveal costs from Glimpse to Gloom instead. The official patch note stated that finding your favorite Shell should not cost you the ability to bond with them.
If you spent Glimpse on Shell map markers before this patch landed, you are entitled to a full refund. Go to the Shell Keeper alcove in Blackmarrow and interact with the Glimpses hovering above the Shells whose locations you previously purchased. Each refund must be collected manually — it does not apply automatically. This refund can meaningfully restore your Glimpse budget if you spent several on markers in the first few hours of your run.
This patch does not introduce any refund system for Glimpse spent on Bond Tiers. Only map marker Glimpses are refunded. Bond spending remains permanent.
Can You Farm Glimpses in Mortal Shell 2?
No. There is no repeatable Glimpse farm in Mortal Shell 2’s current build. Killing regular enemies does not drop Glimpse. The Grisha and Mist farming routes that some players remember from the original Mortal Shell are mechanics from that game and do not exist in the sequel. Every Glimpse in the world is a fixed, one-time pickup from a specific location or interaction.
The only way to get more Glimpses after exhausting all sources in a playthrough is to enter New Game Plus, which resets all Beacon, Gate, chest, and boss Glimpse sources so you can collect them again. NG+ is the intended route to bonding more Shells and unlocking all Memories across multiple cycles. This is confirmed by the trophy guide for Seeking the Past, which requires at least two full playthroughs and part of a third to unlock all 40 Shell Memories.
Combat routes that produce Gloom and Gold at scale are still worth running — Gloom levels your Harbinger and generates Shell Points, while Gold funds weapon upgrades and Tarstone purchases at the Tarforge. Measure any farming route by what Gloom and Gold it earns per loop, not by Glimpse. See our fast Gloom farming guide for the best farming zones.
How to Spend Glimpse Wisely
Since Glimpse cannot be farmed and spending it is permanent, how you spend it matters as much as how you collect it. Here is what works and what to avoid.
What to Spend Glimpse On
- Your main Shell’s Bond Tiers. Pick one Shell early, commit to it, and push its Bond to Tier IV first. The 27-Glimpse investment in a fully bonded Shell pays off with Bond Tier III and IV passives that define the Shell’s identity. Spreading Glimpse across five Shells leaves all of them underpowered. See our best Shells tier list to help decide which Shell earns your first full bond.
- A secondary Shell at Bond Tier I or II. Once your main Shell is fully bonded, start a second Shell at Tier I or II. This gives you a functional fallback without draining your budget before your primary build is complete.
- Genessa’s Bond in your first playthrough. Due to a known NG+ bug where Genessa cannot have her Bond raised after you enter New Game Plus, max her Bond entirely during your first run. Do not leave her for later. See our Sester Genessa guide for the unlock chain and Bond order.
What Not to Spend Glimpse On
- Shell map markers from Zhirelle. After Balance Patch 1, these now cost Gloom instead of Glimpse. Even if you are on an older build, skip the markers and explore instead. Use our all Shell locations guide to find every body without spending anything.
- Spirit Summons at boss fog gates. Each summon costs 1 Glimpse per attempt and provides moderate assistance at best. Only use it on a boss that is genuinely blocking your progress after multiple properly equipped attempts.
- Spreading evenly across all eight Shells. Each Shell at Bond Tier I is weaker than one Shell at Bond Tier IV. The game rewards commitment, not sampling. If you spread your 90 Glimpses evenly, every Shell will be mediocre. If you concentrate them on two or three, those Shells will feel fully realized.
- Testing Shells you have not tried yet. Spend 1 Glimpse on Tier I to unlock the first passive row and test a Shell’s feel before committing the remaining 26. This is sensible. But do not push a Shell to Tier IV before you know you enjoy its playstyle — Bond spending cannot be undone.
Glimpse vs Other Currencies – Quick Reference
Mortal Shell 2 has four currencies and confusing them is a very common early mistake. Here is a one-line description of each so you always know what you are working with.
- Glimpse: Raises Shell Bond Tiers. Finite. Permanent once spent. Cannot be farmed. The most important currency to manage carefully.
- Gloom: Used to level the Harbinger at Beacons and (after Balance Patch 1) pay for Shell map markers. Lost on death, recoverable once. Farmable from enemies.
- Shell Points: Activates passives in a Shell’s ability tree. Shared pool across all Shells. Fully refundable for free at any Beacon. Earned from leveling the Harbinger with Gloom.
- Gold: Buys items from merchants, pays for Tarstone upgrades and weapon improvements at the Tarforge. Never lost on death. Farmable from enemies and Proxima’s Biosample system.
For a complete guide to all four currencies and how they interact, see our Shell Bond and Glimpse guide which covers the full progression system in detail. For healing upgrades that cost nothing but exploration time, check our all healing upgrade locations guide to grab every Revered Gland and Synaptic Vessel before your next boss fight.
Glimpse in New Game Plus
New Game Plus, called New Purpose in-game, resets all world Glimpse sources. Every Beacon, Gate, boss, and world chest that gave you a Glimpse in your first run gives it again in NG+. Your Shell Bond progress carries over, so Glimpse earned in NG+ goes toward bonding the Shells you could not finish in the first run.
This means the intended loop is clear. First playthrough: fully bond your two to three most-used Shells. NG+: clean up remaining Shells using the refreshed Glimpse income. Most players need at least part of a third run to unlock all 40 Shell Memories for the Seeking the Past trophy. Check our Trophy and Achievement guide for the most efficient multi-run Platinum route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you farm Glimpses in Mortal Shell 2?
No. There is no repeatable Glimpse farm in the current build of Mortal Shell 2. Glimpse does not drop from regular enemies. Every Glimpse in the world is a fixed, one-time pickup from a specific Beacon, Gate, boss, chest, or NPC interaction. The only way to get more Glimpses once all sources are exhausted is to enter New Game Plus, which resets all world Glimpse pickups.
How many Glimpses can you get per playthrough in Mortal Shell 2?
Around 90 Glimpses are available per playthrough based on community reports from the launch build. This is enough to fully bond two to three Shells to Bond Tier IV, since each Shell costs 27 Glimpses to fully max. Fully bonding all eight Shells requires approximately 216 Glimpses total, needing multiple playthroughs through New Game Plus.
Where is the first Glimpse in Mortal Shell 2?
The first Glimpse most players find is inside the Widow’s Overlook Beacon, the first Beacon you reach in Fainweald after leaving Marrow Keep. It is in the inner chamber of the Beacon dungeon. From there, cleansing Beacons is your primary Glimpse source throughout the early game.
Does spending Glimpse on Shell summons waste it?
Yes. Spirit Summons at boss fog gates cost 1 Glimpse per attempt and each failed run requires paying again for the next summon. This can quickly drain your budget. Only use boss summons when you are truly stuck after multiple properly geared attempts. Every Glimpse spent on a summon is one less for a Shell’s Bond Tier.
Bottom Line
Glimpse is the most precious resource in Mortal Shell 2 and the game is intentionally stingy with it. The players who get the most out of it are the ones who treat every Glimpse pickup as meaningful — cleansing every Beacon, clearing every Gate thoroughly, defeating every named boss, and talking to every NPC after major milestones. What you do not do matters just as much: avoid Spirit Summons unless you are genuinely stuck, skip Shell map markers entirely, and commit your Glimpse to the Shell you actually plan to play rather than spreading it thin. Everything in this guide comes back to the same principle: there is enough Glimpse to make two or three Shells exceptional, and not nearly enough to sample every Shell at once.
