TL;DR
- Press B or TAB, or click the house icon at the bottom left of the screen to enter Build Mode.
- Build Mode is grid-free — place walls at any angle, build curved walls, and resize furniture without restrictions.
- The interface has five main sections: Build Mode, Buy Mode, Room Tool, Furnishings, and Terrain Tools.
- Almost every object can be resized, recolored, and retextured using the built-in color wheel system.
- Build order matters — do walls and structure first, then doors, windows, stairs, roof, paint, furniture, and terrain last.
- Hold Shift while placing walls for half-grid precision. Use Shift + click on furniture to move objects up and down vertically.
- You can duplicate an entire floor to speed up multi-story builds.
Paralives Build Mode is one of the most talked-about features in the game. It gives you a grid-free, fully customizable construction system where you can build curved walls, resize every piece of furniture, paint with a full color wheel, sculpt terrain, and design multi-story homes — all without the restrictions you might be used to from other life sims. This guide covers everything you need to know to get started and build well, from picking a lot to decorating the final details.
How to Enter Build Mode in Paralives
You can enter Build Mode at any time while on your household lot in Live Mode. There are three ways to open it:
- Press B on your keyboard.
- Press TAB on your keyboard.
- Click the house icon in the bottom left corner of the screen, next to your Parafolk’s portrait.
Build Mode is only available on a lot your active household owns. You need to purchase a lot before you can build on it. Once you are on the lot and in Build Mode, the full interface opens up and you have access to every building tool.
You can also build on a separate empty flat world designed specifically for construction if you want a blank canvas with no terrain constraints. This is useful for testing layouts and creative builds without any lot-specific limitations.
The Build Mode Interface Explained
The Build Mode interface is organized into five main sections accessible from the top left of the screen. Understanding what each section covers makes it much easier to find what you need without digging through menus.
- Build Mode — All structural tools: walls, paint, doors, windows, stairs, roofs, chimneys, architectural details, and fences.
- Buy Mode (Furnishings) — All furniture and objects, organized both by room type and by category.
- Room Tool — Tools for defining and adjusting rooms, platforms, and floor heights.
- Terrain Tools — Plants, terrain sculpting, and terrain painting for the outdoor areas of your lot.
- Search — A search bar that lets you find any item across all 100+ categories without browsing manually.
There is also a Grid toggle available in Build Mode. The grid is optional in Paralives — you can build with it on for more precise alignment or turn it off for completely freeform placement. Most experienced builders toggle the grid on for structural work and off for furniture and decoration.
Walls: How to Build Them in Paralives
Walls are the foundation of any build. Paralives gives you three wall types and the ability to build them in any shape you want — straight, angled, or curved.
Wall Types

- Standard Wall — A full-height wall used for exterior and interior construction. Connect wall ends together to define rooms.
- Half-Wall — A shorter wall that can be combined with standard walls for creative designs. You can customize the height of half-walls freely.
- Invisible Wall — A wall with no visible surface, useful for defining room boundaries and AI pathfinding without affecting the visual appearance of a build.
How to Build Curved Walls
Curved walls are one of the most popular features in Paralives and let you break away from standard rectangular rooms.
- Enter Build Mode and click Build — the top-left orange button with the house icon.
- Select Walls, then Full Walls.
- Click anywhere on your lot to start the wall.
- Release the left mouse button, then move your mouse to where you want the wall to end. The farther you drag, the steeper the curve.
- Click once to place the current curved segment.
- Release the mouse button and drag to further shape the curve.
- Press Shift to fine-tune the size and curvature further.
All three wall types — standard, half, and invisible — can be built as curved walls. After placing a wall, you can adjust its height and thickness from the options panel at the bottom of the screen. Thicker walls create a more classical or heavy architectural look that stands out from the default.
One current Early Access limitation: doors and windows cannot be placed on curved walls yet. This is planned for a future update.
Useful Wall Building Tips
- Hold Shift while dragging a wall for half-grid placement precision, which gives you more control over exact wall positioning.
- Upper floor walls snap to align with the floor below, making multi-story building much easier to keep straight.
- Use the floor duplication button to copy an entire floor’s layout and paste it as a new story above, which saves a lot of time on multi-level homes.
Paint: How to Customize Walls, Floors, and Ceilings
The paint tools in Paralives cover four surfaces — walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs. You can paint one wall or floor tile at a time, or apply a texture to the entire room on the same floor in one click.
Wall Paint Categories

- Rocks and bricks
- Plain walls and paneling
- Tiles
- Wallpaper
Every paint and texture option is connected to the full color wheel system. Rather than being limited to preset swatches, you can dial in any exact color you want. Players who want precise control can enter hex codes directly. Custom color selections can be saved as personal swatches and reused across multiple objects and builds.
Doors and Windows

Doors and windows are placed directly onto walls. Both can be resized and adjusted after placement using the blue arrow handles that appear when you select them.
- Doors — Use the blue arrows to change door size. The advanced tool in the bottom bar lets you resize further. You can also flip a door’s swing direction from the bottom bar options.
- Windows — Resize using the blue arrow handles to change width and height. In the same category, you can also place curtains and match their size to the window.

Doors can also be placed as archways for open-plan layouts. Not all door types support the full blue arrow resize system, but the advanced tool in the bottom bar provides an alternative for those that do not.
Stairs: How to Place and Customize Them
Paralives has 8 staircase styles available in Early Access. Stairs connect floors and adjust naturally in size to suit the height between floors — if a floor is too high for a Para to step up naturally, the stairs will resize automatically.

How to Place Stairs
- Select the Stairs option in the Build Mode section.
- Choose your preferred staircase style.
- Place the stairs on your lot.
- Click and drag the arrows to resize the width and height.
From the bottom options bar after placing stairs, you can:
- Remove the wall underneath the stairs to create extra usable or decorative space.
- Toggle railings on both sides, one side only, or no railings at all.
- Automatically place a fence around the upstairs floor opening to stop Paras from falling.
Stairs can also be placed diagonally, which opens up a lot of creative layout possibilities. More staircase designs and advanced stair tools are planned for post-launch updates.
Roofs: How to Add and Customize Them

Paralives currently offers 18 roof styles including gable, hip, flat, and more. The roof system is marked as incomplete in Early Access, meaning some roofs may not perfectly match every floor plan shape, but the available toolset is already quite flexible.
- Select the Roofs and Chimneys section from the Build Mode menu.
- Choose a style and place the roof over your structure.
- Use the manipulation handles to adjust the roof’s shape, height, and pitch.
- Chimneys can also be placed here to complete the look of a traditional build.
Advanced roof tools with more complex shapes are planned for future Early Access updates. If your roof does not perfectly match your floor plan right now, that is a known limitation that the developers are working on.
Platforms and Split-Level Floors
One of the standout features of Paralives Build Mode is the platform system. Any room you create can have its floor height adjusted independently of the rest of the house.
This lets you build:
- Raised sections within a room
- Sunken lounges
- Split-level living areas
- Proper raised foundations without structural workarounds
Platforms connect directly to the wall-building tools. When you adjust a floor height, the walls in that section adjust with it. The game also provides guides and snapping assistance when building upper floors to help align them with the structure below.
Furnishings and Buy Mode: Placing Objects
The Furnishings section organizes all furniture and objects in two ways — by room type and by category.

- By Room — Each room type (kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, etc.) has its own section with all relevant furniture and decorations in one place. The kitchen section, for example, contains counters, fridges, ovens, and kitchen clutter all together.
- By Category — The Comfort category holds all beds, chairs, couches, and love seats together regardless of which room they belong to.
Every piece of furniture can be placed without grid restrictions. You can rotate, move, and position items anywhere on the lot. Free placement is the default — snapping is optional and can be turned on for more structured layouts.
How to Resize Furniture
One of the most praised features of Paralives is that almost all objects can be resized freely. There is no fixed grid size — you can stretch, shrink, and reshape most items to fit any space.
- Click on any placed object to select it.
- Look for the yellow circle with two arrows — this is the resize handle.
- Drag it to scale the object up or down.
- Press Shift while selecting an object to move it up and down vertically from its original position.
- Hold Shift while placing items to duplicate them quickly — great for placing matching furniture sets.
Objects that cannot be fully resized include doors (for technical reasons) and some baby and toddler items like cribs, which keep fixed proportions to preserve their animations. Everything else is fair game. You can make a sofa wider, stretch a counter longer, or scale a bed down to fit a small bedroom.
Object Customization: Colors, Textures, and Materials
Every object in Build Mode supports full color and texture customization through the Custom Styles system. This goes far beyond preset color swatches.
- Click any placed object to access its customization panel.
- Use the full color wheel to select any color, or type in a hex code for precision.
- Save colors as personal swatches to reuse them across different objects.
- Many objects have multiple customizable parts — you can color each section individually. For example, a shelf can have a different color frame, shelf surface, and hardware all at once.
- Switch between different material types — wood, metal, fabric, stone — for most furniture pieces.
This system means two identical chairs placed side by side can look completely different if you customize them separately. It is one of the main reasons builds in Paralives feel more personal than what you can achieve in other life sims.
Architectural Details and Fences
The Architectural Details section of Build Mode is divided into four subcategories:

- Moldings — Friezes and borders added to walls. Ideal for classical, detailed, or traditional-style builds.
- Columns — Structural columns that add architectural character to facades and interiors.
- Details — Additional decorative architectural elements.
- Miscellaneous — Other structural add-ons that do not fit the categories above.
Fences can be placed around the perimeter of your lot or used as dividers within the outdoor space. They are fully customizable in color and material like other objects in the game.
Terrain Tools: Plants, Sculpting, and Painting
The Terrain Tools section covers everything outside the walls of your home. It is divided into three subsections:
Plants
There are seven plant categories available: trees, shrubs, flowers, weeds, vines, rocks, and planters. Like furniture, most plants and rocks can be freely resized. You can also change the colors of most plants, allowing for unique combinations that match the atmosphere of your build or even create fantastical alien-looking landscapes using the Creation Style system.
Terrain Sculpting
The sculpting tools let you reshape the actual land on your lot. You can raise ground to create hills or elevated areas, lower it to create pits or sunken sections, and flatten areas for clean building foundations. Sculpting the terrain before placing plants and landscaping elements is the recommended approach — changing terrain height after you have already placed plants means repositioning everything.
Terrain Painting
Terrain Paint applies ground textures to your lot’s surface. Textures include options like grass, dirt, stone, and more. These textures use a 3D resolution system, meaning they render with real depth and visual detail rather than looking like flat 2D color applied to the ground. This makes a significant visual difference on sloped or sculpted terrain.
Best Build Order in Paralives
With so many tools available, it is easy to get distracted by decoration before the structure actually works. The most efficient approach is to follow a clear build order and not jump ahead to furnishing until the shell is solid.
- Pick your lot — Choose a location in Melino that suits your Para’s lifestyle. Beachside, residential, canyon-view, and farmland options are all available.
- Build the shell — Place exterior walls and define the overall footprint and shape of the house.
- Set floor levels and platforms — Adjust room heights and add any split-level sections before interior walls go in.
- Add interior walls — Divide the interior into rooms.
- Place doors and windows — Fit them into the walls and resize to match the style.
- Add stairs — Connect floors and adjust railing options.
- Place the roof — Choose a style and adjust the pitch and shape.
- Paint walls, floors, and ceilings — Apply colors and textures throughout.
- Place furniture — Furnish each room, resize as needed, and customize colors.
- Do terrain and landscaping last — Sculpt the ground, paint the terrain, and add plants after everything inside is done.
Following this order keeps the house easy to modify while it is still structurally simple. Decorating a layout that does not work yet just makes the layout harder to fix.
Build Mode Keyboard Shortcuts
Learning a few shortcuts makes the building process significantly faster.
- B or TAB — Open Build Mode.
- Shift + drag wall — Half-grid placement for precise wall positioning.
- Shift + click object — Move the selected object up or down vertically.
- Shift + place item — Duplicate the item quickly during placement.

What Is Coming to Build Mode in the Future
Paralives is in Early Access and the Build Mode roadmap includes several planned additions:
- Basements — Underground floors are confirmed as a planned feature.
- Advanced roof tools — More complex roof shapes and customization beyond what is currently available.
- Stair customization — More staircase design options in addition to the 8 current styles.
- Pools — Swimming pools are planned for a future update.
- Lakes and ponds — Water features for outdoor lot design.
- Doors and windows on curved walls — Currently not supported but confirmed as a planned improvement.
- World editing tools — Town-level editing is a longer-term planned feature.
The Build Mode is already one of the strongest parts of Paralives even in its current Early Access state. The planned additions will make it even more capable as the game continues to develop toward its 1.0 release.
Build Mode Tips for Beginners
- Start with a pre-built home if you are new. You can always edit it later once you get a feel for the tools. Jumping straight into a full custom build as a first-time player can feel overwhelming.
- Use the search bar. With over 100 categories of objects, the search bar saves a huge amount of time when you know what item you are looking for.
- Think in zones, not rooms. Paralives handles unusual shapes well. An open-plan living area with a kitchen nook feels more natural than forcing everything into rigid rectangular rooms.
- Customize duplicates differently. If you place the same shelf three times, change the colors and materials on each one. The result looks like three distinct pieces of furniture without needing different objects.
- Test furniture functionality after resizing. Most objects work fine when resized, but some can behave unexpectedly when scaled to extreme dimensions. Check that your Para can actually use an object after you have stretched it.
- Change the time of day while decorating. Lighting looks different at different times of day. Test how materials and colors appear in both daylight and evening light before committing to a scheme.
