Troilite is one of the rarest and most important late-game materials in Subnautica 2. Unlike most ores you pick up early on, this one requires a specific tool, a dangerous deep-sea journey, and good preparation. Miss one step and you will come back empty-handed.

What Is Troilite in Subnautica 2?
Troilite is a raw material in Subnautica 2 that you get by breaking apart special rock formations called Mineralized Clinkers. It is not an ore you stumble across early. It belongs to a later stage of the game, tied to specific crafting chains and a critical story repair.
Its real-world chemical formula is FeS (Iron(II) sulfide). While it is extremely rare on Earth, it is actually the most common sulfide mineral found on the Moon. In Subnautica 2, it plays a big role in powering your progress toward the endgame.

Where to Find Troilite in Subnautica 2
There is only one location where Troilite currently spawns in Subnautica 2: the Karakorum Metal Farm, located in the far northeast corner of the map.
More specifically, the area is:
- Near the Angel Comb, below the Alien Power Plant
- Roughly 870 meters northeast of the Alien Ruins Research Base at a compass bearing of about 75 degrees
- Approximately 450 meters deep
- Coordinates for the Power Plant: -167185, 431547, -41800
- Coordinates for Angel Comb: -141050, 413040, -44193
You will know you are in the right spot when you see glowing green pools of yellow brine surrounded by old industrial structures. Look around the edges of these pools for the bright green Mineralized Clinker nodes.
Once you are there, check both the main pool area and head northwest to find a second pool with more Clinker nodes scattered around it. Some are tucked behind buildings or between objects, so look carefully.

How to Get to the Troilite Location
Getting there takes preparation. Follow these steps:
Step 1: Unlock the Tadpole and Depth Module Mk. 1
The Karakorum Metal Farm sits at around 450 meters deep. Your standard Tadpole cannot reach this without an upgrade. You need the Tadpole Depth Module Mk. 1 installed before you set off. Even with it, you will need to exit the Tadpole and swim the final stretch yourself.

Step 2: Craft the Sonic Resonator
Troilite cannot be picked up by hand. You must use the Sonic Resonator to break open the Mineralized Clinker nodes and collect it. Do not make the trip without it. If the green nodes are there but will not break, you are in the right place — you just have the wrong tool.
Step 3: Navigate from the Alien Ruins
Start at the Alien Ruins Research Base. Head east and drop off the edge as you descend. You will spot a large purple tube — follow it toward the Angel Comb under the Alien Power Plant. From there, continue northeast and descend until you reach the glowing pool area at the Karakorum Metal Farm.
Open your inventory with Tab, click Signals, and use your map markers to help track the Angel Comb location. From the Angel Comb, keep going northeast and drop another 400 meters.
Step 4: Watch Out for Dangers
This area is one of the most dangerous in the game. Here is what to expect:
- A Collector Leviathan patrols above the zone. Stay close to the seabed to reduce your chances of triggering it.
- There are many aggressive sea creatures that will attack you once you exit the Tadpole.
- A giant squid-type creature lives above the pool and will attack the Tadpole if you get too close.
- There is a nearby red zone where a massive whale creature will one-shot both you and your Tadpole. Do not cross into it.
Bring healing supplies and make sure you know how to increase your oxygen in Subnautica 2 before making this trip. You will need every second underwater.
How to Mine Troilite
Once you are in the area, mining Troilite is straightforward:
- Exit the Tadpole when you reach the pool area
- Look around the edges of the glowing yellow-green brine pools for bright green Mineralized Clinker nodes
- Equip your Sonic Resonator
- Fire the Sonic Resonator at the Clinker nodes to break them apart
- The Troilite ore will be added directly to your inventory
There are nodes around the main pool and more near a second pool to the northwest. Explore both spots to collect as much as you need.
Important Warning: Do Not Use All Your Troilite
This is critical. Many players have soft-locked themselves by processing every piece of Troilite into Mangalloy Ingots before setting up a Metal Farm.
The Metal Farm is a base structure that passively duplicates ores over time. But it needs you to insert one unit of the ore you want it to produce first. No seed ore, no production. If you use up all your Troilite before doing this, you may find yourself unable to get more — and you will need a lot of it to repair the Alien Power Plant and progress the story.
Always keep at least one Troilite to seed a Metal Farm. Once the farm is running, it will slowly generate more Troilite so you do not have to make multiple dangerous trips.
To build a Metal Farm, you will need:
- Titanium and other base materials via the Habitat Builder
- Bacterial Culture — found at the bottom of the yellow pools in the same Troilite area
- Power — each Metal Farm uses 20 energy units, so make sure your base is powered up

What Is Troilite Used For in Subnautica 2?
Troilite is a late-game crafting material that unlocks several important upgrades and story-critical items. Here is what it is used for:
- Mangalloy Ingot — Craft in the Processor using 1 Titanium Ingot, 1 Atacamite, and 1 Troilite. You need 10 Mangalloy Ingots to repair the Alien Power Plant turbine, which is the main end-game objective in Early Access.

- Tadpole Depth Module Mk. 2 — Lets your Tadpole dive even deeper than the Mk. 1 allows. Essential for later exploration.

- Entangled Power Cell — An advanced power item for later progression.
In short, Troilite connects to power, vehicle depth, oxygen capacity, and the main story repair. If the game is asking you for it, it means you are close to the endgame content.
Is Troilite a Finite Resource?
In the current Early Access build, Troilite appears to be a limited resource. The Mineralized Clinker nodes in the map do not clearly respawn, which is exactly why so many players have accidentally run out. Unlike common materials such as Titanium or Quartz that you can keep collecting, Troilite has a hard cap on how much exists in the world until you set up a Metal Farm to produce more.
This makes the Metal Farm setup non-optional once you know you will need large amounts of Troilite. Do not treat it like a basic ore. Plan ahead.

Tips Before You Make the Trip
- Have the Sonic Resonator ready before you leave. Going without it is a wasted journey.
- Upgrade your Tadpole with Depth Module Mk. 1 first. Without it, you will not reach the depth.
- Stock up on healing items. The area is full of aggressive creatures.
- Stay near the seabed at all times to avoid attracting the Leviathan overhead.

- Do not use all your Troilite at once. Keep at least one for the Metal Farm seed.
- Collect the Bacterial Culture from the bottom of the pools while you are there — you will need it to build the Metal Farm.
Troilite vs Other Late-Game Resources
Troilite is different from most resources in Subnautica 2 because it combines three challenges in one: a dangerous location, a required tool, and a finite supply. Most earlier materials like Titanium, Silver, or Copper can be gathered with your hands almost anywhere. Troilite forces you to have everything ready before you even get close.
It shares this trait with a few other late materials like Celestine and Lead, but the stakes are higher given its role in the main story.
