Where to Find Lead in Subnautica 2 and How to Get It

Struggling to find Lead in Subnautica 2? Here's exactly where to go, how to mine it, what dangers to watch for, and what you can craft with it.

TL;DR

  • Lead does not spawn near your Lifepod — you have to swim northeast to find it.
  • The closest spot is a ravine about 280–340 meters northeast of the Lifepod at bearing 75°.
  • Look for the Cicada Wreck (Lander Garage) on the ocean floor — tons of Lead are scattered there.
  • Small Lead nodes can be picked up by hand. Large deposits need the Sonic Resonator to break.
  • Lead is mainly used to craft the Sonic Resonator, which you need to mine big ore blocks and clear Angel Combs.
  • Watch out for Nibblers and the Marrowbreach in this area — it is hostile territory.

Lead is one of the sneakiest resources in Subnautica 2. Unlike Titanium or Copper, it does not sit around waiting for you near your starting Lifepod. You have to go out and find it in a specific area — and that area is not exactly friendly.

The good news? Once you know where to look, you can grab a solid haul in one run. This guide covers exactly where Lead spawns, how to get there safely, how to mine it, and what you can do with it once you are back at base.

What Is Lead in Subnautica 2?

Lead is a raw metal resource in Subnautica 2. In the game, it is described as a dense metal — element 82 on the periodic table — useful for construction alloys, ballast, radiation shielding, and large batteries.

In practical terms, you need Lead mainly to craft the Sonic Resonator. That tool is critical for mining large ore deposits and clearing Angel Combs, which unlock new body adaptations. Lead also plays a role in making Germanium Ingots in the Processor, and it can be combined with Salt to make Sugar of Saturn for cooking.

It is not a resource you use every day, but when you need it, you really need it.

Where to Find Lead in Subnautica 2

Lead does not spawn in the safe, shallow waters near your starting area. You will need to venture out to a specific canyon system located to the northeast of your Lifepod. There are two key spots to know.

Location 1: The Ravine at 280 Meters Northeast

The closest Lead location is a ravine roughly 280 meters northeast of the Lifepod, at a compass bearing of about 75 degrees. Here is how to get there step by step:

  • Start at your Lifepod and face northeast. Set your compass bearing to around 75°.
  • Swim northeast for approximately 280 meters.
  • Keep an eye out for a fast-moving blue water current below you.
  • Dive into that current. It will carry you down into a deep canyon.
  • Once inside the ravine, look for a ruined colony platform on the left side. You may also spot a Tadpole fragment nearby.
  • Lead deposits are scattered across the canyon walls and floor in this area.

The current makes this dive easier, but it can also push you off course. Stay low near the canyon floor and do not let it sweep you away from the deposit area.

Location 2: The Cicada Wreck (Lander Garage) at 340 Meters Northeast

If you push further northeast — to around 340–400 meters — you will hit the Cicada Wreck, also called the Lander Garage. This is the bigger haul. The entire ocean floor around and underneath this shipwreck is littered with Lead deposits.

To navigate here:

  • Face the Lifepod and set your compass to northeast, shifting the marker between the NE and 60 mark.
  • Swim in a straight line for 340 meters.
  • Look down. You should see a large shipwreck below you.
  • Explore the seafloor around and beneath the Cicada Wreck to find Lead nodes of all sizes.

This location is also close to the Blackbox – Ruby signal. If your NoA companion has already flagged that signal for you, use it as a reference point. If not, just use the Lifepod as your starting landmark.

Once you get deeper into the story and reach the area near the Alien Ruins, Lead becomes much more abundant. But for early game, these two spots are what you have got.

What Does Lead Look Like in Subnautica 2?

Lead appears as deep purple rocks with a blocky, cuboid texture. They stand out from the sandy ocean floor once you know what to look for. Small nodes blend in more than you might expect at first, so take your time scanning the ground.

There are two types of Lead deposits currently found in the game:

  • Small Lead Nodes — These can be picked up directly by hand. No tools required.
  • Large Lead Deposits — These are bigger rock formations that require the Sonic Resonator to mine.

On your first visit, before you have the Sonic Resonator, focus on collecting the small nodes scattered in the sand. You should find enough for your immediate needs. If you need help getting the tools to process what you collect, read our guide on how to build Processors and craft Ingots.

How to Mine Large Lead Deposits

Once you have crafted the Sonic Resonator, you can go back to the same canyon and break open the large Lead formations. The Resonator emits a sonic pulse that shatters big metal and mineral blocks, giving you multiple resources per deposit.

The Sonic Resonator is also the tool you need to clear Angel Combs. These are biological growths blocking access to new adaptations for your character. So Lead is not just a crafting material — it is part of your progression path.

Dangers in the Lead Mining Area

This canyon is not a safe spot. Before you dive in, here is what you need to know:

Nibblers

Nibblers are small aggressive fish that will take bites out of you while you are trying to mine. They are annoying more than deadly, but they can drain your health if you ignore them. Bring distraction flares to keep them busy while you work.

The Marrowbreach

This is the real threat. The Marrowbreach is one of the most dangerous predators in the starting region of Subnautica 2. It patrols the canyon system where Lead is found. Do not swim high above the canyon floor — stay low and move carefully.

Strong Currents

The blue water currents in this area are powerful. They can sweep you dozens of meters off course in seconds. Use them to descend but be careful once you are at the bottom.

Make sure you are managing your oxygen correctly before going deep. Our guide on how to swim faster in Subnautica 2 can help you move in and out of the area more efficiently.

Pro Tips for Your Lead Mining Run

  • Drop a Beacon at the deposit site. Once you find the spot, place a Beacon using one Copper and one Titanium from your Habitat Builder. You can toggle it from your PDA so you never have to blindly search for the canyon again. Learn more in our guide on how to unlock the Habitat Builder.
  • Bring food and water. This is a long swim into hostile territory. Stock up before you go. See our best early food sources guide and how to make water for help with this.
  • Grab extra Lead on your first visit. Since coming back is a pain, fill your inventory. Stash the surplus in your base storage.
  • Use the Scanner Station later. Once you unlock the Scanner Station base module, it scans a 300-meter radius around your base and tracks every resource nearby. This makes finding Lead much easier as you progress. Read our how to build a Scanner Station guide for details.
  • Unlock Blueprints before you go. You want to have the Sonic Resonator blueprint ready to craft as soon as you return. Check out our guide on how to unlock blueprints and crafting recipes.

What Is Lead Used for in Subnautica 2?

Here is a quick breakdown of the main crafting uses for Lead:

  • Sonic Resonator — The primary reason you are hunting Lead. This tool mines large ore deposits and clears Angel Combs for new adaptations. It is one of the most important tools in the game.
  • Germanium Ingots — Lead can be used in the Processor to make Germanium Ingots. You can also use Silver for this, but Lead is an option if you have more of it available.
  • Sugar of Saturn — A cooking recipe that combines Lead with Salt. This is useful for food crafting in the mid-to-late game.

Lead is not the most versatile resource in terms of pure number of recipes, but its role in making the Sonic Resonator makes it non-negotiable for anyone who wants to progress properly through Subnautica 2.

Once you have Lead sorted, you will likely need other materials too. Our guides on where to find Silver, how to get Titanium, and where to find Copper will keep your crafting pipeline moving.

What to Do After Getting Lead

Once you are back at base with your Lead, here is what to focus on next:

  • Craft the Sonic Resonator at your Fabricator. If you are getting a fabricator error, see our fix guide for the “requires fully functional fabricator” issue.
  • Use the Resonator to go back and mine the large Lead deposits you could not break before.
  • Clear Angel Combs to unlock new adaptations and push further into the game.
  • Start expanding your base. Read our guide on what to build in your base first if you are not sure where to invest your resources.

If you are playing with friends, the Lead run is a great co-op task — one person draws the Marrowbreach away while the other mines. Check out our Subnautica 2 multiplayer co-op guide for more tips on playing together.

Ending Note

Lead is one of those resources that frustrates players early on simply because it does not announce itself. The game drops you into the ocean and expects you to figure it out. Now you know exactly where to go, what to bring, and what to watch out for.

Head 280 to 340 meters northeast from your Lifepod, follow the blue current down into the ravine, find the Cicada Wreck, and grab everything you can carry. Drop a Beacon so you never have to guess again. Build the Sonic Resonator, and the rest of the game opens up considerably.

Good luck out there. Stay low near the canyon floor.
