01 — Overview
What Are Gears?

Gears are equippable power-ups in Tower of Hell that modify your movement, give you special abilities, or help you deal with tough sections. They are purchased each round from Pixy’s Shop using in-game coins and last for exactly one round.

There are 6 gears available to buy in the shop with coins — Gravity Coil, Speed Coil, Fusion Coil, Trowel, Hook and Hourglass. There are also 4 special gears that cannot be purchased: the Jump Coil (admin/event only), Bomb (admin only), YXTerminator (admin only), and Killpart (admin only).

All shop gears except the Hourglass can be upgraded in the Skill Tree for permanent bonuses. Gear prices scale with tower type — Pro Tower prices are higher than Normal Tower prices. When a new round starts any gears you have are lost.

💡 Key Rule

Gears last one round only. You must repurchase them at the start of every new round. Any unspent gears when the round ends are gone. Plan your spending accordingly — only buy a gear if you intend to use it this round.

🎁 Free Gears — Gearbox Secret Section

The secret section Gearbox (added November 11, 2019) can randomly appear in your tower and gives you all 5 shop gears (excluding Hourglass) for free. Extremely rare — see the Gearbox section below for details.

02 — Rankings
Gears Tier List 2026

Our tier list is based on utility across all section types, value for coin cost, and community consensus as of February 2026. Not every S-tier gear suits beginners — read the reasoning before buying.

Stops time — universally helpful
🪝
Hook

Gravity Coil
Best beginner gear — higher jumps
B

Speed Coil
Makes precision sections harder
Not Ranked: Jump Coil, Bomb, YXTerminator, Killpart — admin/event-only gears, not purchasable by regular players.
🔥 Tier List Reasoning

The Hourglass and Hook rank S because they work in literally every situation regardless of section type. The Gravity Coil ranks A not S because while it helps beginners enormously, advanced players with full skill trees outgrow it. The Speed Coil ranks C because most obstacles in Tower of Hell require precision over speed — it actively makes headhitter and narrow-path sections more dangerous.

All 6 Shop Gears Explained

Every purchasable gear in detail — what it does, exact costs for Normal and Pro Towers, who it’s for, and when to use it.

🌀
A-TIER
Gravity Coil
Normal: 80 coins Pro: 152 coins

Reduces the gravity affecting your character, allowing significantly higher and longer jumps. When activated your avatar floats down slowly after jumping — giving you more air time to plan landings and navigate difficult gaps. The gravity coil is attached to your character’s back when equipped and makes a distinctive coil sound when jumping.

Best for: Beginners building confidence, sections with large vertical gaps, and clearing headhitter-adjacent jumps. Combine with the Double Jump skill tree upgrade for a massive boost — and add the Double Jump mutator for a triple jump.

Watch out: Reduced gravity can make headhitter sections harder as you float too high. Practice controlling your jump height.

C-TIER
Speed Coil
Normal: 80 coins Pro: 152 coins

Significantly increases your movement speed, allowing you to run faster across platforms and reach the top of the tower more quickly. The speed coil is bright red and attaches to your character’s arm when equipped.

Best for: Simple, wide-open sections where speed helps. Experienced players use it on towers with large platforms and straightforward obstacles. Also useful for speedrunning Pro Towers to farm coins faster.

Watch out: Speed makes precision sections significantly harder. Narrow paths, headhitters, conveyor timing, and laser dodging are all more dangerous at high speed. Not recommended for beginners at all.

✅ Skill Tree Upgradeable ⚠️ Not for Beginners ⚡ Coin Farming Use 🎨 Has Skins
A-TIER
Fusion Coil
Normal: 90 coins Pro: 150 coins

The Fusion Coil combines the effects of both the Gravity Coil and Speed Coil simultaneously. You jump higher, float longer and move faster all at once. It is purple in color and represents the best all-round movement upgrade in the shop.

Best for: Intermediate to advanced players who have learned to control increased speed. Excellent for Pro Tower coin farming and speedrunning. Gives the broadest movement improvement of any single gear.

Watch out: The combined speed and altered gravity can be very disorienting for beginners. Master the Gravity Coil first before upgrading to the Fusion Coil.

B-TIER
Trowel
Normal: 40 coins Pro: 70 coins

The Trowel lets you place a small floating platform (a “block”) or a truss (with the Truss Placement skill tree upgrade) at any targeted location. The placed block is only solid for you — other players cannot stand on it. Blocks disappear after a short time. You can also place blocks on spinning kill parts to slow their rotation, making those sections significantly easier.

Best for: Creating recovery platforms after near-misses, bridging impossible gaps, and countering spinning obstacle sections. The cheapest gear in the shop — excellent value.

Watch out: Placing blocks takes a moment and the animation can slow you down mid-climb. Practice the placement technique before relying on it in a live run.

S-TIER
Hook (Grappling Hook)
Normal: 80 coins Pro: 152 coins
Advertisement

The Hook fires a grappling hook in the direction of your cursor. When it connects with a surface your character is pulled toward it — letting you swing, scale walls, skip sections entirely and recover from falls that would otherwise send you back to the bottom.

Best for: Advanced players who have mastered basic climbing. The Hook enables skip routes through multiple sections at once, recovery from near-falls, and dramatically faster tower completion times. Top-tier players use the Hook to clear entire sections from a single anchor point.

Watch out: The Hook has a steep learning curve. The trajectory moves in a parabolic arc and requires precision aiming. Do not buy it expecting immediate results — practice in a private server first using /mod vanilla.

S-TIER
Hourglass
Normal: 90 coins Pro: 180 coins

The Hourglass stops time for your character only — freezing you mid-air, mid-jump or mid-fall. The screen turns blue when activated. While time is stopped you can reposition, line up your next jump perfectly, and navigate around kill parts without fear. Release the Hourglass to resume movement.

Best for: Players who struggle with timing-based obstacles — spinning kill parts, moving laser timing, and precision jumps over tight gaps. The Hourglass has zero downsides making it the most universally effective gear in the game regardless of skill level.

Watch out: The Hourglass is the only gear that cannot be upgraded in the Skill Tree. Also note: it stops time for you alone — other players continue moving normally.

04 — Permanent Upgrades
Skill Tree Upgrades

The Skill Tree lets you permanently enhance 5 of the 6 shop gears using skill points earned by leveling up. 1 skill point per level. 80 points to fully max everything.

Access the Skill Tree by clicking your level number at the bottom of the screen (not the shop). Only one branch can be active at a time — switching branches disables the previous one. Resetting costs 50 Robux via the “Skill Reset” shop item, so plan carefully.

⚠️ Important Warning

Skill resets cost 50 Robux. Think carefully before spending skill points — especially in the Hook branch which requires significant investment before becoming useful. Beginners should start with the Gravity Coil branch.

Levels 30–60: Hook Range I + II if you use the Hook, or continue Gravity Reduction for coil builds. Level 80: Fully maxing all 80 points earns the Maxed badge and unlocks the Pink Halo.

05 — Strategy
Best Gear Combos

Gears can be combined with mutators and skill tree upgrades for powerful synergies. Here are the best combinations the community uses in 2026.

🏆 The Triple Jump Build
Gravity Coil Double Jump (Skill Tree) Double Jump (Mutator)

Combines the Gravity Coil with the Double Jump skill tree upgrade AND the Double Jump mutator to give you a triple jump. Three jumps in the air with reduced gravity — the best combination for clearing massive vertical gaps and difficult sections. Costs 1 skill point + 200 coin mutator.

⚡ The Speedrun Build
Fusion Coil Low Gravity (Mutator)

The Fusion Coil’s speed + gravity boost combined with the Low Gravity mutator (130 coins) results in extremely fast tower completion. Best for coin and XP farming on Pro Towers. Not recommended for tricky towers — precision suffers significantly.

🛡️ The Invincibility Setup
Gravity Coil Invincibility (Mutator)

Combine your main movement gear with the Invincibility mutator (500 coins) to negate all kill parts for the entire round. Great for learning new sections without fear of falling. The Invincibility mutator is the only one with absolutely no downsides.

🎯 The Precision Build
Hourglass Trowel

Two gears that reward careful, deliberate play. The Hourglass lets you freeze mid-air to position perfectly, while the Trowel lets you place recovery platforms. Together they give maximum safety for technically difficult runs. Both work great for beginners attempting harder towers.

🪝 The Skip Master Build
Hook (Max Range) Fusion Coil

Full Skill Tree investment in Hook Range (120 studs) combined with Fusion Coil movement speed allows elite players to skip 2-3 sections per hook shot. Only viable with significant hook practice — but the most efficient build for completing towers as fast as possible.

💰 The Coin Farm Build
Speed Coil Low Gravity (Mutator) Pro Tower

Speed Coil + Low Gravity mutator on Pro Towers is the fastest way to earn coins per hour. Complete Pro Towers as fast as possible to maximize the 250 coin reward per run. Best for players who can consistently finish Pro Towers without falling.

06 — Spending Guide
What to Buy First

This is the exact gear progression order recommended by the Tower of Hell community for 2026 — from your very first coins to a fully maxed loadout.

01
Save 6,000 Coins → Buy Gravity Coil First

Before buying any gear, save up and buy the Gravity Coil from the permanent shop (6,000 coins total investment — not per round). This unlocks it. Then immediately spend 1 skill point on Double Jump in the Skill Tree. This single purchase + upgrade combination will visibly improve your tower completion rate overnight. Do not buy any other gear until you can consistently complete Normal Towers with the Gravity Coil.

02
Spend Per-Round on Trowel (40 Coins)

The Trowel is only 40 coins per round and provides a safety net that can save an entire run. While saving for the Gravity Coil permanent unlock or between gear purchases, the Trowel gives excellent value. Use it to place recovery platforms on sections that consistently kill you.

03
Unlock Hourglass Next (Second Major Purchase)

Once you have the Gravity Coil working for you, save for the Hourglass. It is universally useful, has zero downsides, and helps with timing-based obstacles that no other gear can assist with. The Hourglass cannot be upgraded in the Skill Tree so there is no long-term investment needed — it just works as-is.

04
Move to Fusion Coil (Intermediate Stage)

Once you consistently complete Pro Towers with Gravity Coil, switch to the Fusion Coil (90 coins per round). The higher speed and jump combination dramatically improves your completion time per tower — maximizing coin and XP earnings. Continue investing Skill Tree points into Speed upgrades at this stage.

05
Learn the Hook Last (Advanced)

Only invest in the Hook once you have mastered everything else. The Hook has the steepest learning curve of any gear but offers the highest ceiling for advanced players. Practice exclusively in a private server using /setLength 1 to create a single-section tower for isolated hook practice. Once mastered it enables skip routes and recovery from situations no other gear can handle.

07 — Secret Section
The Gearbox Secret Section

Gearbox is one of the most rewarding secret sections in Tower of Hell — it gives you every shop gear for free if you know where to look.

Added by uwuPyxl on November 11, 2019, the Gearbox is a gray-colored secret section that can randomly replace a standard section in your tower. It appears as a structured obstacle area with a recognizable cylindrical pillar in the center and five display pillars showing gear models.

When you reach the top of the Gearbox truss you will find a circular platform that randomly spawns one of five gears: Gravity Coil, Speed Coil, Fusion Coil, Trowel, or Hook. The Hourglass is not available from Gearbox. The platform respawns a new gear whenever it detects none is present — meaning if someone else takes a gear a new one spawns shortly after.

🎁 Gearbox Key Facts

The gear spawned is random each time — you may not get the one you want. There is also an invisible platform with collision at the gear spawn point which causes your character to float slightly when walking over it — this is a known quirk of the section, not a bug. The circular display platform in Gearbox is the same model used in the MiniTower secret section.

For a full list of every secret section in the game including spawn rates and rewards see our complete Sections Guide.

08 — Cosmetics
Gear Skins

Every shop gear has cosmetic skins that change its appearance without affecting gameplay. Skins are obtained from Robux boxes (15 Robux each, regional pricing as of mid-2025).

ℹ️ Coil Hats

In addition to gear skins there are also Coil Hats — wearable cosmetics that place a coil on your character’s head. All Coil Hats are Legendary (Orange) rarity and are obtained from Robux boxes. There are also Tall Coil Hats which are extremely tall versions gifted only to select community members by game staff — not obtainable by regular players.

09 — Common Questions
Gears FAQ

Do gears carry over between rounds? No. All gears are lost when a round ends regardless of whether you used them. You must repurchase every round. Any coins spent on gears you did not use are gone.

Which gear should I buy first as a beginner? The Gravity Coil — no question. Unlock it with 6,000 coins, then immediately spend 1 skill point on Double Jump. This single combo helps with almost every section in the game and is the universal community recommendation for new players.

Why can’t I upgrade the Hourglass in the Skill Tree? The Hourglass is intentionally excluded from the Skill Tree — likely because its time-stopping ability is already considered extremely powerful at base level. It is the only shop gear that cannot be upgraded.

Can other players use the platforms I place with the Trowel? No. Blocks and trusses placed with the Trowel are only solid for the player who placed them. Other players will fall straight through your platforms.

Is the Hook worth learning? For advanced players — absolutely yes, S-tier. For beginners — no. The Hook has a significant learning curve and will likely cost you more runs than it saves until you have mastered it. Practice in a private server first with /setLength 1.

Can I reset my Skill Tree if I chose the wrong branch? Yes, but it costs 50 Robux via the “Skill Reset” item in the shop. There is no free reset option. This is why planning your Skill Tree path before spending points is strongly recommended.

What is the Gearbox secret section? A rare secret section added November 11, 2019 that gives you a random free gear from a circular spawn platform. Can give Gravity Coil, Speed Coil, Fusion Coil, Trowel or Hook — but not the Hourglass. See our Gearbox section above for full details.

How do I get to level 80 for the Pink Halo? XP equals coins earned per tower. Pro Towers give 250 XP each. You need 80 levels total — each level requiring progressively more XP. Consistently playing Pro Towers is the fastest path. See our Halos Guide for the full Pink Halo requirements.
